Abstract:A plenty of uniform and spherical ruthenium nanoparticles were prepared by the adsorption–bioreduction method using the Cacumen Platycladi extract and supported on the activated carbon which was modified with nitric acid. The catalytic performance of as-prepared Ru/AC–HNO3 catalysts was investigated in the liquid phase hydrogenation of 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-dione to 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-diol. Different characterization techniques of BET, XRD, TEM, and FTIR were applied to understand the origin of the catalytic activity. With a comprehensive analysis of the experimental results, we can draw a conclusion that the higher dispersion of ruthenium nanoparticles and the smaller particle size give rise to the results which indicate a remarkable enhancement of the catalytic performance in comparison with the non-modified AC samples.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzene (HNB) has been a great important chemical reaction in the fine chemical productions. In this study, the effect of metal particle size on the selective hydrogenation of HNB over Pd/C catalysts has been extensively investigated through the combination of theoretical (density functional theory calculations, DFT) and experimental methods. DFT calculations showed that the reaction barriers for dechlorination strongly depend on the type of reaction sites (terrace or edge), while the hydrogenation reaction barriers are nearly the same on different sites, which indicates that Pd nanoparticle size significantly affects the catalyst selectivity. Moreover, Pd nanoparticles with different sizes (from 2.1 to 30 nm) supported on activated carbon were synthesized using the methods developed by our group. In a 500 mL reactor, the selectivity is over 99.90% when the Pd nanoparticles are bigger than 25 nm. Finally, the industrial applications of the proposed catalyst were evaluated in several pilot factories. This study provides useful information on controlling the selectivity of other similar reactions catalyzed by noble-metal nanocatalysts.

Abstract:The design of an ideal heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation reaction is to impart the catalyst with synergetic surface sites active cooperatively toward different reaction species. Herein a new strategy is presented for the creation of such a catalyst with dual active sites by decorating metal and metal oxide nanoparticles with ultrafine nanoclusters at atomic level. This strategy is exemplified by the design and synthesis of Ru nanoclusters supported on Ni/NiO nanoparticles. This Ru-nanocluster/Ni/NiO-nanoparticle catalyst is shown to exhibit ultrahigh catalytic activity for benzene hydrogenation reaction, which is 55 times higher than Ru-Ni alloy or Ru on Ni catalysts. The nanoclusters-on-nanoparticles are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscope, Cs-corrected high angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy, elemental mapping, high-sensitivity low-energy ion scattering, and X-ray absorption spectra. The atomic-scale nanocluster-nanoparticle structural characteristics constitute the basis for creating the catalytic synergy of the surface sites, where Ru provides hydrogen adsorption and dissociation site, Ni acts as a "bridge" for transferring H species to benzene adsorbed and activated at NiO site, which has significant implications to multifunctional nanocatalysts design for wide ranges of catalytic reactions.

Abstract:A series of Pd-only catalysts supported on activated carbon pretreated with HNO3 or EDTA-2Na for liquid phase selective hydrogenation 3,4-dichloronitrobenzene (DCNB) to corresponding 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCAN) are investigated. Characterization of the catalysts is performed by N2 adsorption/desorption, TPD, XRD and TPD techniques. The selectivity to DCAN is not only correlate with the Pd particle average size, but also correlate with distribution of Pd particles sizes. The surface groups of activated carbon can influence the average size and distribution of Pd particles. Pretreated activated carbon with HNO3, forms various oxygen-containing groups on the surface, results in large average size but wide-distributed Pd particles. On the contrast, pretreated activated carbon with EDTA-2Na results in large average size and narrow-distributed of Pd particles simultaneously. More than 60% Pd particles sizes are distributed in the 20–30nm range of the 2% Pd loading catalyst pretreated with 1M EDTA-2Na, of which the selectivity to DCAN is up to 99.61%.
Rh Doping in Pd Nanocubes Optimizes the Adsorption of 3‐nitrostyrene Towards Selective Hydrogenation of Vinyl Group

Abstract:For selective hydrogenation, the improvement in selectivity is often accompanied with the sacrifice of activity. Herein, we achieved the optimization of both activity and selectivity towards selective hydrogenation reaction of 3-nitrostyrene over Rh-doped Pd nanocubes. Specially, the Rh-doped Pd nanocubes with 6 atm % of Rh (denoted as Pd94Rh6) achieved a remarkable high selectivity (99.5 %) for product 3-ethylnitrobenzene with almost 100 % conversion. Mechanistic studies revealed that the introduction of Rh dopant into Pd nanocubes strengthened the adsorption of 3-nitrostyrene relative Pd nanocubes, accounting for the enhanced activity. Moreover, the ensemble composed of Rh dopant and nearby Pd atoms in Rh-doped Pd nanocubes induced the unique adsorption configuration of 3-nitroethylbenzene that inhibited the hydrogenation of NO2, responsible for the high C=C selectivity.

Abstract:This study demonstrates that the ordered body‐centered cubic phase of PdCu can serve as highly selective and active sites for 3‐nitrostyrene hydrogenation to 3‐nitro‐ethylbenzene or 3‐amino‐styrene under mild conditions. Mechanism studies reveal the different selectivity is originated from the differences in surface (catalyst)‐groups (reactants) interaction. Phase engineering of nanomaterials plays a crucial role for regulating the catalytic performance. Nevertheless, great challenges still remain for elucidating the structure–selectivity correlation. Herein, this study demonstrates that the body‐centered cubic phase of PdCu (bcc‐PdCu) can serve as a highly active and selective catalyst for 3‐nitrostyrene (NS) hydrogenation under mild conditions. In particular, bcc‐PdCu displays a 3‐nitro‐ethylbenzene (NE) selectivity of 93.8% with a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 4573 h−1 at 30 °C in the presence of H2. With the assistance of NH3∙BH3, the selectivity of 3‐amino‐styrene (AS) reaches 94.5% with a TOF value of 13 719 h−1. Detailed experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that improved NE selectivity is ascribed to the selective adsorption of the CC bond and desorption of NE on bcc‐PdCu. Moreover, the presence of NH3∙BH3 facilitates the selective hydrogenation of NO2 due to their strong interaction and thus leads to the formation of AS. This work provides an efficient selective catalyst for NS hydrogenation under mild conditions, which may attract immediate interests in the fields of materials, chemistry, and catalysis.

Abstract:The present work reported the convenient preparation of Pd-based catalyst over α-Fe2O3 as support via a UV light-induced reduction process. The resulting Pd/α-Fe2O3 catalyst exhibited good performance for the hydrogenation reduction of o-chloronitrobenzene (o-CNB), yielding completely o-CNB conversion and 91.4% selectivity of o-CAN at high substrate/catalyst ratio (6000:1) under mild conditions.

Abstract:Supported Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are highly active catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation reactions; however, controlling their selectivity remains the biggest challenge toward their applicability. Herein, we propose the formation of a highly selective and stable, surface-strained Pt-based nanocatalyst via a facile and scalable thermal reduction treatment. Spherical-aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (SACTEM) and various spectral analytic techniques reveal a strong metal-support interaction between the Pt NPs and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) support during the annealing process. Thereafter, a fraction of carbon atoms is etched from the carbon-coated Pt NPs, inducing a compressive strain on the surface of the Pt NPs. Notably, the chemoselectivity of the surface-strained Pt/CNTs-800H catalyst (where 800 represents the heat-treatment temperature; H represents a hydrogen atmosphere) is almost completely different compared to that of its pristine counterpart. This catalyst is used for the hydrogenation reactions of a styrene and nitrobenzene mixture as well as 4-nitrostyrene. Interestingly, similar findings were observed with 5 wt% Pt/C and Pt/rGO catalysts, confirming that this treatment could be generalized. Hence, it has great potential in the design and synthesis of carbon-based catalytic materials. Product selectivity can be precisely adjusted by changing the hydrogen source. H2 dissociates to form *H on bcc‐PdCu, which preferentially reacts with CC to form 3‐nitro‐ethylbenzene with 93.8% selectivity. Bcc‐PdCu catalyzes the reaction of NH3·BH3 and –NO2 to produce 3‐amino‐styrene with 94.5% selectivity.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation with high efficiency under ambient conditions remains a long-standing challenge. Here, a yolk-shell nanostructured catalyst, PdAg@ZIF-8, featuring plasmonic PdAg nanocages encompassed by a metal-organic framework (MOF, namely, ZIF-8) shell, has been rationally fabricated. PdAg@ZIF-8 achieves selective (97.5%) hydrogenation of nitrostyrene to vinylaniline with complete conversion at ambient temperature under visible light irradiation. The photothermal effect of Ag, together with the substrate enrichment effect of the catalyst, improves the Pd activity. The near-field enhancement effect from plasmonic Ag and optimized Pd electronic state by Ag alloying promote selective adsorption of the -NO2 group and therefore catalytic selectivity. Remarkably, the unique yolk-shell nanostructure not only facilitates access to PdAg cores and protects them from aggregation but also benefits substrate enrichment and preferential -NO2 adsorption under light irradiation, the latter two of which surpass the core-shell counterpart, giving rise to enhanced activity, selectivity, and recyclability.

Abstract:Chemoselective hydrogenation of structurally diverse nitroarenes is a challenging process that often requires precious metal catalysts and proceeds in an organic solvent. Herein, a convenient and stable hybrid nanocatalyst combining carbon dots and copper nanoparticles is developed as an ideal alternative for this transformation. The as-prepared nanocatalyst achieves over 99% selectivity for the formation of 4-aminostyrene at 100% conversion of 4-nitrostyrene in an aqueous solvent under visible light irradiation. Compared with other reported catalysts, our presented catalyst shows more superior hydrogenation selectivity and stability as well as lower material cost. This high efficiency could be originated from the nanocatalyst's ability to synergistically control surface hydrogen species released from ammonia borane and energetic "hot" electrons induced by visible light irradiation for the selective reduction reaction. Compared with other reported catalysts, our presented nanocatalyst is better for the realization of energy-saving chemical processes by introducing solar energy.

Abstract:Product selectivity adjustment is a much-studied topic in mesoscience that is critical for industrial processes and strongly related to reaction intermediates formed by interactions between catalytic active sites and reactants. Herein, we report efficient adjustment of the product selectivity in the hydrogenation of substituted nitroarenes via rational reaction intermediates achieved using controllable Pd nanoparticles. Pd nanoparticles fixed within zeolite Beta crystals (Pd@Beta) afforded rational Pd-NO2 interactions, in which the Pd nanoparticle-adsorbed substituted nitroarenes, such as nitrobenzaldehyde, were reasonably hydrogenated into the corresponding aminobenzaldehyde. However, for Pd nanoparticles supported on the external surfaces of zeolite beta crystals, various side products were obtained owing to the coexistence of Pd-NO2 and Pd-C=O interactions. When Pd nanoparticles were artificially controlled in various positions in a fixed-bed reactor, the product selectivity was significantly affected. These results demonstrate the importance of molecular adsorption and diffusion processes in adjusting product selectivity in catalytic reactions. Abstract:Noble metals play a momentous role in heterogeneous catalysis but still face a huge challenge in selectivity control. Herein, we report isolating contiguous Pt atoms and forming Pt-Zn intermetallic nanoparticles as an effective strategy to optimize the selectivity of Pt catalysts. Contiguous Pt atoms are isolated into single atoms and Pt-Zn intermetallic nanoparticles are formed which are supported on hollow nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (PtZn/HNCNT), as confirmed by aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectrometry measurements. Interestingly, this PtZn/HNCNT catalyst promotes the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenylacetylene to 4-aminophenylacetylene with a much higher conversion ( > 99%) and selectivity (99%) than the comparison samples with Pt isolated-single-atomic-sites (Pt/HNCNT) and Pt nanoparticles (Pt/CN). Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations disclose that the positive Zn atoms assist the adsorption of nitro group and Pt-Zn intermetallic nanoparticles facilitate the hydrogenation on nitro group kinetically.
Using Graphene Encapsulated Ni and Pd Catalysts with Solvent Effect to Achieve Highly Chemo-Selective Hydrogenation of 4-Nitrostyrene to Different Products

Abstract:Chemo-selective hydrogenation of challenging nitrostyrene to the corresponding product of vinylaniline, ethylbenzenamine, and ethylnitrobenzene separately in high yield is difficult since there exists competitive activation of the C=C double bond and the –NO2 group over most supported metal catalysts. Also, the currently reported catalysts still have some disadvantages of high cost, catalyst reusability and separation problem, catalyst stability and leaching during harsh reaction conditions, waste generation, which disagree with the requirements of low cost, highly active and selective, sustainable, environmentally friendlier, and industrially applicable. Herein we report thin graphene layer encapsulated Ni and Pd nanoparticles core-shell structures as highly active, chemo-selective, and reusable catalysts for hydrogenation of 4-nitrostyrene in both batch reactor and industrially applicable flow reactor. In the standard hydrogenation of 4-nitrostyrene, the optimized catalysts Ni/NiO@-700-200-1-H2O and Pd@NC-2 yield a selectivity to every single product of 4-vinylaniline 99%, 4-ethylbenzenamine 99%, 1-ethyl-4-nitrobenzene 99% through simple changing reaction conditions, the best achieved over Ni and other group metals and higher than the best result reported in the literature. In non-polar solvent toluene, in contrast to traditional catalysts, the Ni@C catalyst is inert for the C=C and is only active about the -NO2, while the N-doped Pd@NC-2 has opposite hydrogenation ability and can hydrogenate the C=C without touching -NO2 in non-polar solvent cyclohexane, which rarely reported in the previous literature. In addition, the catalysts show excellent stability and the 4-nitrostyrene’s hydrogenation can be successfully applied in industrially applicable flow reactors for each of the three product syntheses separately with excellent yield. These discoveries may extend the design of non-noble catalysts with excellent chemoselectivity for use in fine chemicals’ synthesis.
Particle-Size-Dependent Electronic Metal–Support Interaction in Pd/TiO2 Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation of 3-Nitrostyrene

Abstract:The Pd/TiO2 catalysts with varying Pd nanoparticle sizes are used to study the control of selectivity toward the hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene (3-NS). Our results show the selectivities of 3-vinylanilline (3-VA) rise by decreasing the particle size, while the selectivity of 3-ethylnitrobenzene (3-EN) is the opposite. However, over the Pd/SiO2 catalysts, 3-EN moieties are the dominant product regardless of their differences in particle size. We find that the electronic interactions between Pd NPs and the TiO2 support rise by decreasing particle size, as a result, creating more admetals on the Pd NPs in contact with TiO2, which favorably adsorb the nitro group of 3-NS, thus resulting in enhanced selectivity of 3-VA. However, the classical strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) induced by reduction at elevated temperatures play no significant role in the controlling of selectivities of 3-VA and 3-EN. The SiO2-supported Pd NPs without electronic metal-support interactions (EMSIs) prefer the reduction of the vinyl group of 3-NS. This work underlines the importance of EMSI governing the selectivity for hydrogenation of unsaturated nitroarene reactions.
Highly dispersed Pd nanoclusters anchored on CNx-modified SiO2 for selective hydrogenation of nitrile-butadiene rubber

Abstract:Heterogeneous hydrogenation is an effective way to improve the performance of unsaturated polymers, but the preparation of supported catalysts with high metal dispersion and stability remains challenging. Herein, we synthesize a SiO 2 -based support wrapping with carbon nitride on the surface (CN x @SiO 2 ) via the thermal polycondensation of melamine, on which Pd nanoclusters with highly exposed active sites are formed and stably anchored via the strong interaction between N and Pd. The thermal temperature affects the properties of CN x , which further modulates the electronic and structural state of Pd nanoclusters. The Pd/CN x @SiO 2 -500 catalyst, prepared at 500 °C with an optimal CN x structure ( g -C 3 N 4 ) and high nitrogen content, features highly dispersed and electron-rich Pd nanoclusters (1.3 nm). This catalyst exhibits a hydrogenation activity of 98.0% for nitrile rubber, with a selectivity of 100% for C=C bonds. This work provides a facile method to prepare Pd catalysts with high activity and stability, paving the way for the upgrading of unsaturated polymers via hydrogenation.
