Abstract:We propose an approach to generate geometric theorems from electronic images of diagrams automatically. The approach makes use of techniques of Hough transform to recognize geometric objects and their labels and of numeric verification to mine basic geometric relations. Candidate propositions are generated from the retrieved information by using six strategies and geometric theorems are obtained from the candidates via algebraic computation. Experiments with a preliminary implementation illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach for generating nontrivial theorems from images of diagrams. This work demonstrates the feasibility of automated discovery of profound geometric knowledge from simple image data and has potential applications in geometric knowledge management and education.

Abstract:We describe first steps towards a system for automated triangle constructions in absolute and hyperbolic geometry. We discuss key differences between constructions in Euclidean, absolute and hyperbolic geometry, compile a list of primitive constructions and lemmas used for constructions in absolute and hyperbolic geometry, build an automated system for solving construction problems and test it on a corpus of triangle-construction problems. We also provide an online compendium containing construction descriptions and illustrations.

Abstract:Computer-aided design software enables the rapid conceptual creation of a curved surface geometry, whereas it is not a convenient task for engineers to create a discrete grid structure on a complex surface that meets architectural and aesthetic requirements. This emphasizes the importance of grid generating tools and methods. A new triangular mesh generator for the free-form curved surfaces of architectural structures is developed based on the mapping truss-like method. The mapping truss-like method builds a bidirectional mapping mechanism between 3D domain and 2D domain, generates meshes in 2D domain using constrained Delaunay triangulation, and relaxes the mesh iteratively with the planar mesh regarded as a plane truss structure. This generator can generate uniform meshes and adaptive meshes in harmony with the surface features by a relative edge size function for various free-form surfaces. The directional trend of the mesh is adjustable by rotating the initial node placement, and selected points can be fixed to mesh multi-surfaces. In addition, methods are proposed to counteract mapping distortion by adjusting the mesh-generating algorithm locally. Examples illustrate that the generator has wide adaptability, high automation and comprehensive control of resulting meshes. Thus, this paper presents a useful design tool for free-form surfaces of grid structures.
Automated production of traditional proofs for constructive geometry theorems

Abstract:The authors present a method that can produce traditional proofs for a class of geometry statements whose hypotheses can be described constructively and whose conclusions can be represented by polynomial equations of three kinds of geometry quantities: ratios of lengths, areas of triangles, and Pythagoras differences of triangles. This class covers a large portion of the geometry theorems about straight lines and circles. The method involves the elimination of the constructed points from the conclusion using a few basic geometry propositions. The authors' program, Euclid, implements this method and can produce traditional proofs of many hard geometry theorems. Currently, it has produced proofs of 400 nontrivial theorems entirely automatically, and the proofs produced are generally short and readable. This method seems to be the first one to produce traditional proofs for hard geometry theorems efficiently

Abstract:Purpose Modern CAD systems facilitate the creation of any surface geometry imaginable, and complex surfaces for free-form grid shells are often represented by a set of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines surface patches. But it remains an intractable issue how to generate high-quality grids on complex surfaces efficiently. To solve this issue, an automatic triangular mesh generation method is presented, based on bubble dynamics simulation and a modified Delaunay method. Design/methodology/approach A moderate amount of points are first distributed on a given surface. Next, by regarding the points as elastic bubbles with the same size and introducing the forces acting on bubbles, the motion control equations of bubbles are established. The equilibrium state of the bubble system is found by Verlet algorithm. Then, the Voronoi diagram on the surface is obtained by calculating the intersection between the surface and the three-dimensional (3D) Voronoi diagram of the centers of bubbles. Finally, a triangular mesh, Delaunay triangulation on the surface, is determined based on the dual change of the Voronoi diagram. Findings This method generates meshes on the surface directly, unlike mapping-based methods, avoiding the mapping distortion. Examples are given to demonstrate the successful execution of this method. The result also illustrates that this method is applicable to various surfaces in high automation level and resultant meshes are highly uniform and well-shaped. Originality/value Thus, this method provides the convenience for the geometry design of complex free-form grid structure.

Abstract:How to automatically generate short and easy-to-understand proofs for geometric theorems has long been an issue of concern in mathematics education. A novel automated geometric theorem proving method based on complex number identities is proposed in this paper, which acts as a bridge between geometry and algebra. According to the proposed method, the geometric relations in the given proposition are first transformed into a complex number expression, then the complex number identity is generated by the elimination method; finally, the closure property under all four operations of real numbers is employed to prove the proposition. A test on more than 300 geometric problems shows that the proposed method is highly effective, and the corresponding proofs are short, with obvious geometric meaning.

We also discuss how to combine the forward chaining and backward chaining to achieve higher efficiency. The prover based on the full-angle method has been used to produce short and elegant proofs for more than one hundred difficult geometry theorems. The proofs of many of those theorems produced by our previous area method are relatively long.

Abstract:This paper presents a method of producing readable proofs for theorems in solid geometry. The method is for a class of constructive geometry statements about straight lines, planes, circles, and spheres. The key idea of the method is to eliminate points from the conclusion of a geometric statement using several (fixed) high-level basic propositions about the signed volumes of tetrahedrons and Pythagorean differences of triangles. We have implemented the algorithm, and more than 80 examples from solid geometry have been used to test the program. Our program is efficient and the proofs produced by it are generally short and readable.

Abstract:The automated generation of geometry proof problems represents a burgeoning research domain in the realm of artificial intelligence, with significant practical implications for mathematics education. In this study, we present a method for automatically generating fresh geometry proof questions by adapting existing ones. The core of the approach is a novel representation model for geometry proof problems, which we term "point geometry identity". According to this model, the premises and conclusion to be proven in a geometry proof problem, as well as their relationships, can be expressed as an expression. Subsequently, by applying equivalent deformation principles of algebraic expressions, we can modify the premises and conclusions of existing problems to generate new ones. Experimental analysis and expert evaluations indicate that our approach can efficiently generate a substantial number of diverse problems suitable for mathematics education within a short span of time. Moreover, under the same input conditions, our method can generate novel problems that existing techniques cannot.

Abstract:We describe a prototype of a new experimental GeoGebra command and tool, Discover, that analyzes geometric figures for salient patterns, properties, and theorems. This tool is a basic implementation of automated discovery in elementary planar geometry. The paper focuses on the mathematical background of the implementation, as well as methods to avoid combinatorial explosion when storing the interesting properties of a geometric figure.

Abstract:Straightedge and compass construction problems are one of the oldest and most challenging problems in elementary mathematics. The central challenge, for a human or for a computer program, in solving construction problems is a huge search space. In this paper we analyze one family of triangle construction problems, aiming at detecting a small core of the underlying geometry knowledge. The analysis leads to a small set of needed definitions, lemmas and primitive construction steps, and consequently, to a simple algorithm for automated solving of problems from this family. The same approach can be applied to other families of construction problems.

Abstract:We present a method which can produce traditional proofs for a class of constructive geometry statements in Euclidean geometry. The method is a mechanization of the traditional area method used by many geometers. The key idea of our method is to eliminate dependent (constructed) points in a geometry statement using a few basic geometry propositions about the area of triangles. The method has been implemented. Our program, calledEuclid, can produce traditional proofs of many hard geometry theorems such as Pappus' theorem, Pascal's theorem, Gauss point theorem, and the Pascal conic theorem. Currently, it has produced proofs of 110 nontrivial theoremsentirely automatically. The proofs produced byEuclid are elegant, short (often shorter than the proofs given by geometers) and understandable even to high school students. This method seems to be the first that can produce traditional proofs for hard geometry theorems automatically.

Abstract:In a previous paper Todd (Submitted to AMAI, 2022), linear systems corresponding to sets of angle bisector conditions are analyzed. In a system which is not full rank, one bisector condition can be derived from the others. In that paper, we describe methods for finding such rank deficient linear systems. The vector angle bisector relationship may be interpreted geometrically in a number of ways: as an angle bisector, as a reflection, as an isosceles triangle, or as a circle chord. A rank deficient linear system may be interpreted as a geometry theorem by mapping each vector angle bisector relationship onto one of these geometrical representations. In Todd (Submitted to AMAI, 2022) we illustrate the step from linear system to geometry theorem with a number of by-hand constructed examples. In this paper, we present an algorithm which automatically generates a geometry theorem from a starting point of a linear system of the type identified in Todd (Submitted to AMAI, 2022). Both statement and diagram of the new theorem are generated by the algorithm. Our implementation creates a simple text description of the new theorem and utilizes the Mathematica GeometricScene to form a diagram.

The method has been implemented and the program has proved 410 nontrivial theorems entirely automatically. Abstract:We give a formula for counting the triangles in a picture consisting of the three sides of a triangle and some cevians. This lets us prove statements that are claimed without proof in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences and some popular YouTube videos, and also prove some new results. We also give formulas that apply when the cevians cut each side into equal-length pieces.

Abstract:The article proposes a new method for finding the triangle-triangle intersection in 3D space, based on the use of computer graphics algorithms -- cutting off segments on the plane when moving and rotating the beginning of the coordinate axes of space. This method is obtained by synthesis of two methods of cutting off segments on the plane -- Cohen-Sutherland algorithm and FC-algorithm. In the proposed method, the problem of triangle-triangle intersection in 3D space is reduced to a simpler and less resource-intensive cut-off problem on the plane. The main feature of the method is the developed scheme of coding the points of the cut-off in relation to the triangle segment plane. This scheme allows you to get rid of a large number of costly calculations. In the article the cases of intersection of triangles at parallelism, intersection and coincidence of planes of triangles are considered. The proposed method can be used in solving the problem of tetrahedron intersection, using the finite element method, as well as in image processing.

Random Triangle Theory with Geometry and Applications

Abstract:What is the probability that a random triangle is acute? We explore this old question from a modern viewpoint, taking into account linear algebra, shape theory, numerical analysis, random matrix theory, the Hopf fibration, and much much more. One of the best distributions of random triangles takes all six vertex coordinates as independent standard Gaussians. Six can be reduced to four by translation of the center to $(0,0)$ or reformulation as a 2x2 matrix problem. In this note, we develop shape theory in its historical context for a wide audience. We hope to encourage other to look again (and differently) at triangles. We provide a new constructive proof, using the geometry of parallelians, of a central result of shape theory: Triangle shapes naturally fall on a hemisphere. We give several proofs of the key random result: that triangles are uniformly distributed when the normal distribution is transferred to the hemisphere. A new proof connects to the distribution of random condition numbers. Generalizing to higher dimensions, we obtain the "square root ellipticity statistic" of random matrix theory. Another proof connects the Hopf map to the SVD of 2 by 2 matrices. A new theorem describes three similar triangles hidden in the hemisphere. Many triangle properties are reformulated as matrix theorems, providing insight to both. This paper argues for a shift of viewpoint to the modern approaches of random matrix theory. As one example, we propose that the smallest singular value is an effective test for uniformity. New software is developed and applications are proposed.

Abstract:We extend the notion of triangle to "imaginary triangles" with complex valued sides and angles, and parametrize families of such triangles by plane algebraic curves. We study in detail families of triangles with two commensurable angles, and apply the theory of plane Cremona transformations to find "Pythagorean theorems" for them, which are interpreted as the implicit equations of their parametrizing curves.
