Abstract:Polygonal vertices convexo-concave determining is one of the fundamental issues in Computer Graphics. In this paper, plane space is separated into 2 region defined as positive region and negative region based on the direction and the stretched of the line segment. Accordingly transform identification of convexity or concavity of the next vertices into identification of the region position. Consequently the operation of multiplication can be averted. In order to do the best in practical determining, 3 areas is separated of the plane space, whereas not the same as earlier. These area are based on two horizontal lines, two vertical lines and two 45°diagonal lines through the vertices of the line segment. Because the partition is based on the polygon vertices and it has dynamic, therefore it's a dynamic distinct partition. These areas are defined as positive area, negative area or mixed area. In the case of the positive area or the negative area, we can confirm the convexity or concavity of the vertices through simple distinguishing. The result of test indicates it is a simple, highly efficient and reliable algorithm with high speed requires only (n/4) multiplication and(12n) comparisons.

Abstract:We consider a natural variation of the concept of stabbing a segment by a simple polygon: a segment is stabbed by a simple polygon $\mathcal{P}$ if at least one of its two endpoints is contained in $\mathcal{P}$. A segment set $S$ is stabbed by $\mathcal{P}$ if every segment of $S$ is stabbed by $\mathcal{P}$. We show that if $S$ is a set of pairwise disjoint segments, the problem of computing the minimum perimeter polygon stabbing $S$ can be solved in polynomial time. We also prove that for general segments the problem is NP-hard. Further, an adaptation of our polynomial-time algorithm solves an open problem posed by Löffler and van Kreveld [Algorithmica 56(2), 236--269 (2010)] about finding a maximum perimeter convex hull for a set of imprecise points modeled as line segments.

Abstract:We study the problem of stabbing rectilinear polygons, where we are given $n$ rectilinear polygons in the plane that we want to stab, i.e., we want to select horizontal line segments such that for each given rectilinear polygon there is a line segment that intersects two opposite (parallel) edges of it. Our goal is to find a set of line segments of minimum total length such that all polygons are stabbed. For the special case of rectangles, there is a $O(1)$-approximation algorithm and the problem is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard [Chan et al.]. Also, the problem admits a QPTAS [Eisenbrand et al.] and even a PTAS [Khan et al.]. However, the approximability for the setting of more general polygons, e.g., L-shapes or T-shapes, is completely open.

Abstract:Let $S$ and $D$ each be a set of orthogonal line segments in the plane. A line segment $s\in S$ \emph{stabs} a line segment $s'\in D$ if $s\cap s'\neq\emptyset$. It is known that the problem of stabbing the line segments in $D$ with the minimum number of line segments of $S$ is NP-hard. However, no better than $O(\log |S\cup D|)$-approximation is known for the problem. In this paper, we introduce a constrained version of this problem in which every horizontal line segment of $S\cup D$ intersects a common vertical line. We study several versions of the problem, depending on which line segments are used for stabbing and which line segments must be stabbed. We obtain several NP-hardness and constant approximation results for these versions. Our finding implies, the problem remains NP-hard even under the extra assumption on input, but small constant approximation algorithms can be designed.

Efficient cutting area detection in roughing process for meshed surfaces

Abstract:Presented in this paper is an efficient cutting area detection algorithm for the layer-by-layer roughing process of the meshed surfaces in stereolithography (STL) format. The algorithm consists of three steps. Firstly, the intersecting model of a spatial triangle facet and a plane is established and formulated. Based on this, all the intersecting segments between the assigned hunting plane and the triangle meshes in the STL model are calculated. These segments are unordered initially, so in the second step, by building a special data structure, an O( n log n ) time-linking procedure is developed to link the unordered intersecting segments into several closed loops, where n is number of intersecting segments. Finally, the cutting area is identified from the obtained loops by inheritance tree analysis. The proposed algorithm has been programed and run on a personal computer. Several STL surfaces have been tested and the results show that the proposed algorithm is fast and stable.

Abstract:Intersecting algorithms, especially line clipping in and in computer graphics, have been studied for a long time. Many different algorithms have been developed. The simplest case is a line clipping by a convex polygon in with O(N) computational complexity and with known polygon edges orientation. This contribution presents a new algorithm for a line clipping by a convex polygon in E with O(lg N) complexity, which is based on the point-in-half plane test. The proposed algorithm does not require prior knowledge of the polygon edge orientation. The vertices of the convex polygon and the clipped line can be given in projective space using homogeneous coordinates. The algorithm uses vector–vector operations for efficient implementation with SSE or AVX vector–vector instructions or on GPUs. It is simple and robust.

Abstract:The (axis-parallel) stabbing number of a given set of line segments is the maximum number of segments that can be intersected by any one (axis-parallel) line. This paper deals with finding perfect matchings, spanning trees, or triangulations of minimum stabbing number for a given set of points. The complexity of these problems has been a long-standing open question; in fact, it is one of the original 30 outstanding open problems in computational geometry on the list by Demaine, Mitchell, and O'Rourke. The answer we provide is negative for a number of minimum stabbing problems by showing them NP-hard by means of a general proof technique. It implies non-trivial lower bounds on the approximability. On the positive side we propose a cut-based integer programming formulation for minimizing the stabbing number of matchings and spanning trees. We obtain lower bounds (in polynomial time) from the corresponding linear programming relaxations, and show that an optimal fractional solution always contains an edge of at least constant weight. This result constitutes a crucial step towards a constant-factor approximation via an iterated rounding scheme. In computational experiments we demonstrate that our approach allows for actually solving problems with up to several hundred points optimally or near-optimally.

Minimum Star Partitions of Simple Polygons in Polynomial Time

Abstract:We devise a polynomial-time algorithm for partitioning a simple polygon $P$ into a minimum number of star-shaped polygons. The question of whether such an algorithm exists has been open for more than four decades [Avis and Toussaint, Pattern Recognit., 1981] and it has been repeated frequently, for example in O'Rourke's famous book [Art Gallery Theorems and Algorithms, 1987]. In addition to its strong theoretical motivation, the problem is also motivated by practical domains such as CNC pocket milling, motion planning, and shape parameterization. The only previously known algorithm for a non-trivial special case is for $P$ being both monotone and rectilinear [Liu and Ntafos, Algorithmica, 1991]. For general polygons, an algorithm was only known for the restricted version in which Steiner points are disallowed [Keil, SIAM J. Comput., 1985], meaning that each corner of a piece in the partition must also be a corner of $P$. Interestingly, the solution size for the restricted version may be linear for instances where the unrestricted solution has constant size. The covering variant in which the pieces are star-shaped but allowed to overlap--known as the Art Gallery Problem--was recently shown to be $\exists\mathbb R$-complete and is thus likely not in NP [Abrahamsen, Adamaszek and Miltzow, STOC 2018 & J. ACM 2022]; this is in stark contrast to our result. Arguably the most related work to ours is the polynomial-time algorithm to partition a simple polygon into a minimum number of convex pieces by Chazelle and Dobkin~[STOC, 1979 & Comp. Geom., 1985].

A technique for solving the polygon inclusion problems

Abstract:We propose a technique called Rotate-and-Kill for solving the polygon inclusion and circumscribing problems. By applying this technique, we obtain $O(n)$ time algorithms for computing (1) the maximum area triangle in a given $n$-sided convex polygon $P$, (2) the minimum area triangle enclosing $P$, (3) the minimum area triangle enclosing $P$ touching edge-to-edge, i.e. the minimum area triangle that is the intersection of three half-planes out of the $n$ half-planes defining $P$, and (4) the minimum perimeter triangle enclosing $P$ touching edge-to-edge. Our algorithm for computing the maximum area triangle is simpler than the alternatives given in [Chandran and Mount, IJCGA'92] and [Kallus, arXiv'17]. Our algorithms for computing the minimum area or perimeter triangle enclosing $P$ touching edge-to-edge improve the $O(n\log n)$ or $O(n\log^2n)$ time algorithms given in [Boyce \emph{et al.}, STOC'82], [Aggarwal \emph{et al.}, Algorithmica'87], [Aggarwal and J. Park., FOCS'88], [Aggarwal \emph{et al.}, DCG'94], and [Schieber, SODA'95].

Stabbing Rectangles by Line Segments - How Decomposition Reduces the Shallow-Cell Complexity

Abstract:We initiate the study of the following natural geometric optimization problem. The input is a set of axis-aligned rectangles in the plane. The objective is to find a set of horizontal line segments of minimum total length so that every rectangle is stabbed by some line segment. A line segment stabs a rectangle if it intersects its left and its right boundary. The problem, which we call Stabbing, can be motivated by a resource allocation problem and has applications in geometric network design. To the best of our knowledge, only special cases of this problem have been considered so far. Stabbing is a weighted geometric set cover problem, which we show to be NP-hard. A constrained variant of Stabbing turns out to be even APX-hard. While for general set cover the best possible approximation ratio is $\Theta(\log n)$, it is an important field in geometric approximation algorithms to obtain better ratios for geometric set cover problems. Chan et al. [SODA'12] generalize earlier results by Varadarajan [STOC'10] to obtain sub-logarithmic performances for a broad class of weighted geometric set cover instances that are characterized by having low shallow-cell complexity. The shallow-cell complexity of Stabbing instances, however, can be high so that a direct application of the framework of Chan et al. gives only logarithmic bounds. We still achieve a constant-factor approximation by decomposing general instances into what we call laminar instances that have low enough complexity. Our decomposition technique yields constant-factor approximations also for the variant where rectangles can be stabbed by horizontal and vertical segments and for two further geometric set cover problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the problem of covering a convex rectilinear polygon with the minimum number of rectangles. The rectangles can overlap with each other. We show that this problem can be solved in linear time, which improves the previous O(n2) result proposed by Franzblau and Kleitman3. However, Franzblau and Kleitman's algorithm works for a larger class of polygons (vertically convex).
Computing skeletons for rectilinearly-convex obstacles in the rectilinear plane

Abstract:We introduce the concept of an obstacle skeleton which is a set of line segments inside a polygonal obstacle $\omega$ that can be used in place of $\omega$ when performing intersection tests for obstacle-avoiding network problems in the plane. A skeleton can have significantly fewer line segments compared to the number of line segments in the boundary of the original obstacle, and therefore performing intersection tests on a skeleton (rather than the original obstacle) can significantly reduce the CPU time required by algorithms for computing solutions to obstacle-avoidance problems. A minimum skeleton is a skeleton with the smallest possible number of line segments. We provide an exact $O(n^2)$ algorithm for computing minimum skeletons for rectilinear obstacles in the rectilinear plane that are rectilinearly-convex. We show that the number of edges in a minimum skeleton is generally very small compared to the number of edges in the boundary of the original obstacle, by performing experiments on random rectilinearly-convex obstacles with up to 1000 vertices.

Let $\Theta _{i}=\pi -\alpha _i$ and $\Theta =\min \{\Theta _i :i=1,\ldots ,2k\}$. We obtain: (1) Given a set $\mathcal {O}$ such that $\Theta \ge \frac{\pi }{2}$, we provide an algorithm to compute the $\mathcal {O}$-convex hull of P in optimal $O(n\log n)$ time and O(n) space; If $\Theta < \frac{\pi }{2}$, the time and space complexities are $O(\frac{n}{\Theta }\log n)$ and $O(\frac{n}{\Theta })$ respectively. Algorithms for Computing Closest Points for Segments

Abstract:Given a set $P$ of $n$ points and a set $S$ of $n$ segments in the plane, we consider the problem of computing for each segment of $S$ its closest point in $P$. The previously best algorithm solves the problem in $n^{4/3}2^{O(\log^*n)}$ time [Bespamyatnikh, 2003] and a lower bound (under a somewhat restricted model) $\Omega(n^{4/3})$ has also been proved. In this paper, we present an $O(n^{4/3})$ time algorithm and thus solve the problem optimally (under the restricted model). In addition, we also present data structures for solving the online version of the problem, i.e., given a query segment (or a line as a special case), find its closest point in $P$. Our new results improve the previous work.

Efficient Exact Algorithms for Minimum Covering of Orthogonal Polygons with Squares

Abstract:The Orthogonal Polygon Covering with Squares (OPCS) problem takes as input an orthogonal polygon $P$ without holes with $n$ vertices, where vertices have integral coordinates. The aim is to find a minimum number of axis-parallel, possibly overlapping squares which lie completely inside $P$, such that their union covers the entire region inside $P$. Aupperle et. al~\cite{aupperle1988covering} provide an $\mathcal O(N^{1.5})$-time algorithm to solve OPCS for orthogonal polygons without holes, where $N$ is the number of integral lattice points lying in the interior or on the boundary of $P$. Designing algorithms for OPCS with a running time polynomial in $n$ (the number of vertices of $P$) was discussed as an open question in \cite{aupperle1988covering}, since $N$ can be exponentially larger than $n$. In this paper we design a polynomial-time exact algorithm for OPCS with a running time of $\mathcal O(n^{14})$. We also consider the following structural parameterized version of the problem. A knob in an orthogonal polygon is a polygon edge whose both endpoints are convex polygon vertices. Given an input orthogonal polygon with $n$ vertices and $k$ knobs, we design an algorithm for OPCS with running time $\mathcal O(n^2 + k^{14} \cdot n)$. In \cite{aupperle1988covering}, the Orthogonal Polygon with Holes Covering with Squares (OPCSH) problem is also studied where orthogonal polygon could have holes, and the objective is to find a minimum square covering of the input polygon. This is shown to be NP-complete. We think there is an error in the existing proof in \cite{aupperle1988covering}, where a reduction from Planar 3-CNF is shown. We fix this error in the proof with an alternate construction of one of the gadgets used in the reduction, hence completing the proof of NP-completeness of OPCSH.

Abstract:We study the problem of ordered stabbing of $n$ balls (of arbitrary and possibly different radii, no ball contained in another) in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 3$, with either a directed line segment or a (directed) polygonal curve. Here, the line segment, respectively polygonal curve, shall visit (intersect) the given sequence of balls in the order of the sequence. We present a deterministic algorithm that decides whether there exists a line segment stabbing the given sequence of balls in order, in time $O(n^{4d-2} \log n)$. Due to the descriptional complexity of the region containing these line segments, we can not extend this algorithm to actually compute one. We circumvent this hurdle by devising a randomized algorithm for a relaxed variant of the ordered line segment stabbing problem, which is built upon the central insights from the aforementioned decision algorithm. We further show that this algorithm can be plugged into an algorithmic scheme by Guibas et al., yielding an algorithm for a relaxed variant of the minimum-link ordered stabbing path problem that achieves approximation factor 2 with respect to the number of links. We conclude with experimental evaluations of the latter two algorithms, showing practical applicability.
