Abstract:Simultaneous monitoring of electrophysiological and biochemical signals is of great importance in healthcare and fitness management, while the fabrication of highly integrated and flexible devices is crucial to these applications. Herein, we devised a multifunctional and flexible hydrogel-paper patch (HPP) that was capable of simultaneously real-time monitoring of electrocardiogram (ECG) signal and biochemical signal (glucose content) in sweat during exercise. The self-assembly of the highly porous PEDOT:PSS hydrogel on paper fiber provided the HPP with good conductivity and hydrophilic wettability for efficient electron transmission and substance diffusion, thereby enabling it to serve as a low-impedance ECG electrode and a highly sensitive glucose sensor. Additionally, the spontaneous capillary flow effect allows the paper patch to be used as microfluidic channels for the collect and analysis of sweat. Moreover, the HPP is integrated with a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) and works as a multifunctional wearable device mounted on the chest for real-time monitoring of electrophysiological and biochemical signals during exercise.

Abstract:Here, a smartwatch for sweat monitoring was presented for perspiration analysis. The smartwatch played the part of analyzing, computing, and displaying the real-time data with the feature of comfortable wearing and lightweight ergonomic design. Moreover, the paper-based microfluidic patch with a three-dimensional structure was proposed to realize the sweat collection and solve the issue of sweat accumulation. To further realizing the sweat monitoring, the potassium and sodium ion-selective electrodes were developed by the screen-printing technique. The experiment of on-body monitoring the K+ and Na+ in sweat had been carried out to further demonstrate the feasibility of the smartwatch.

Abstract:Stretchable sweat sensors have become a personalized wearable platform for continuous, noninvasive health monitoring through conformal integration with the human body. Typically, these devices are coupled with soft microfluidic systems to control sweat flow during advanced analysis processes. However, the implementation of these soft microfluidic devices is limited by their high fabrication costs and the need for skin adhesives to block natural perspiration. To overcome these limitations, a stretchable and smart wettable patch has been proposed for multiplexed in situ perspiration analysis. The patch includes a porous membrane in the form of a patterned microfoam and a nanofiber layer laminate, which extracts sweat selectively from the skin and directs its continuous flow across the device. The integrated electrochemical sensor array measures multiple biomarkers simultaneously such as pH, K+, and Na+. The soft sensing patch comprises compliant materials and structures that allow deformability of up to 50% strain, which enables a stable and seamless interface with the curvilinear human body. During continuous physical exercise, the device has demonstrated a special operating mode by actively accumulating sweat from the skin for multiplex electrochemical analysis of biomarker profiles. The smart wettable membrane provides an affordable solution to address the sampling challenges of in situ perspiration analysis.

Abstract:Breathable and comfortable sensing textiles that can detect multi-biomarkers existing in human sweat are a promising way to achieve comprehensive health monitoring in our daily life. However, current wearable and flexible electrochemical textiles lack stretchability, which can result in unstable signals or device damage during movement. Additionally, these textiles have limited integration of multiple indicators, needing a large surface area and a significant amount of sweat to activate the sensors. Herein, we report an integrated all-in-one multifunctional electrochemical biosensor fiber constructed with a helical core-sheath structure, offering the stretchability and ability to detect biomarkers with trace amounts of sweat. The biosensor was fabricated by arranging multi-functionalized carbon nanotube strips in a spiral pattern alongside a pre-stretched polymer fiber core acting as microelectrodes with robust interface. Additionally, a super-hydrophilic sheath layer is incorporated to enhance the sweat capture efficiency of the biosensor. The biosensor has the capability to simultaneously monitor six biomarkers including pH, K + , Na + , glucose, lactate and uric acid, demonstrating stable sensing performance under 300% strain. Merely 1 of sweat is needed to initiate the detection of all six biomarkers. The resulting textile sensing system presents continuous and real-time monitoring of multi-biomarker information, allowing for the assessment of our health condition.

Abstract:Abstract In situ analysis of sweat biomarkers potentially provides noninvasive lifestyle monitoring and early diagnosis. Quantitative detection of sweat rate is crucial for thermoregulation and preventing heat injuries. Here, a skin‐attachable paper fluidic patch is reported for in situ colorimetric sensing of multiple sweat markers (pH, glucose, lactate, and uric acid) with concurrent sweat rate tracking. Two sets of fluidic patterns—multiplexed detection zones and a longitudinal sweat rate channel—are directly printed by an automated ink dispenser from a specially developed ceramic‐based ink. The ceramic ink thermal‐cures into an impervious barrier, confining sweat within the channels. The ceramic‐ink‐printed boundary achieves higher pattern resolution, prevents fluid leakage, attains pattern thermal stability, and resistant to organic solvents. The cellulose matrix of the detection zones is modified with nanoparticles to improve the color homogeneity and sweat sensor sensitivity. The sweat rate channel is made moisture sensitive by incorporating a metal‐salt‐based dye. The change in saturation/color of the detection zones and/or channels upon sweat addition can be visually detected or quantified by a smartphone camera. A cost‐effective way is provided to fabricate paper fluidic sensor patches, successfully demonstrating on‐body multiplexed evaluation of sweat analytes. Such skin wearables offer on‐site analysis, meaningful to an increasingly health‐conscious population.

Abstract:Stretchable sweat sensors are promising technology that can acquire biomolecular insights for health and fitness monitoring by intimate integration with the body. However, current sensors often require microfabricated microfluidic channels to control sweat flow during lab-on-body analysis, which makes effective and affordable sweat sampling a significant practical challenge. Here, we present stretchable and sweat-wicking patches that utilize bioinspired smart wettable membranes for the on-demand manipulation of sweat flow. In a scalable process, the membrane is created by stacking hydrophobic elastomer nanofibers onto soft microfoams with predefined two-dimensional superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic patterns. The engineered heterogeneous wettability distribution allows these porous membranes to achieve enhanced extraction and selective collection of sweat in embedded assays. Despite the simplified architecture, the color reactions between sweat and chemical indicators are inhibited from directly contacting the skin to achieve a largely improved operation safety. The sensing patches can simultaneously quantify pH, urea, and calcium in sweat through digital colorimetric analysis with smartphone images. The construction with all compliant materials renders these patches soft and stretchy to achieve conformal attachment to the skin. Successfully analyzing sweat compositions after physical exercises illustrates the practical suitability of these skin-attachable sensors for health tracking and point-of-care diagnosis.

Abstract:Wearable sweat electrochemical sensors have attracted wide attention due to their advantages of non-invasive, portable, real-time monitoring, etc. However, existing sensors still have some problems with efficient sweat collection. Microfluidic channel technology and electrospinning technology are commonly used to collect sweat efficiently, but there are some limitations such as complex channel design and multiple spinning parameters. Besides, existing sensors are mostly based on flexible polymers, such as, PET, PDMS, PI and PI, which have limited wearability and permeability. Based on the above, all fabric and dual-function flexible wearable sweat electrochemical sensor is proposed in this paper. This sensor uses fabric as the raw material to implement the directional transport of sweat and the multi-component integrated detection dual functions. Meanwhile, the high-efficiency collection of sweat is obtained by a Janus fabric, wherein one side of the selected silk is superhydrophobic graft treated and the other side is hydrophilic plasma treated. Therefore, the resulting Janus fabric can effectively transfer sweat from the skin side to the electrode, and the minimum sweat droplet can reach 0.2 μL to achieve micro-volume collection. Besides, the patterned sensor, made of silk-based carbon cloth, is fabricated using a simple laser engraving, which could detect Na + , pH, and glucose instantaneously. As a result, these proposed sensors can achieve good sensing performance and high-efficiency sweat collection dual functionality; moreover, it has good flexibility and comfortable wearability.

Abstract:A wearable sweat sensor, which could continuously monitor biomolecules related to the human physiological state, is emerging as a promising piece of health surveillance equipment. However, current sensors cannot simultaneously achieve a detection performance that equates to that of traditional sensors and satisfactory mechanical strength. Herein, a wearable sweat sensor with excellent detection performance and mechanical stability is designed and fabricated. Based on the integration of laser-induced graphene electrodes and a screen printing technique, this wearable sweat sensor could realize both the separate and simultaneous detection of uric acid (UA), tyrosine (Tyr), and ascorbic acid (AA) with high sensitivity. Good UA sensing performance in artificial sweat could be maintained even after 20 000 bends. In addition, the sensor can operate well in the wearing state or in a complex bovine whole blood sample. For the detection of human sweat, the changes in UA concentration after a purine-rich meal are continuously monitored and the results are in accordance with the corresponding serum UA detection results tested with a commercial serum UA meter. These results suggest its application potential in health monitoring for both gout patients and healthy humans.

Abstract:Stretchable and wearable sensors allow intimate integration with the human body for health and fitness monitoring. In addition to the acquisition of various physical parameters, quantitative analysis of chemical biomarkers present in sweat may provide vital insights into the physiological state of an individual. A widely investigated system utilizes electrochemical techniques for continuous monitoring of these biomarkers. The required supporting electronics and batteries are often challenging to form a deformable system. In this study, an intrinsically stretchable sensing patch is developed with compliant mechanical properties for conformal attachment to the skin and reliable collection of sweat. In these patches, superhydrophilic colorimetric assays consisting of thermoplastic polyurethane nanofiber textiles decorated with silica nanoparticles are assembled over a styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene-based superhydrophobic substrate, thereby generating a large wettability contrast to efficiently concentrate the sweat. The system supports multiplexed colorimetric analysis of sweat to quantify pH and ion concentrations with images acquired using smartphones, in which the influence of ambient lighting conditions is largely compensated with a set of reference color markers. Abstract:Capabilities in health monitoring enabled by capture and quantitative chemical analysis of sweat could complement, or potentially obviate the need for, approaches based on sporadic assessment of blood samples. Established sweat monitoring technologies use simple fabric swatches and are limited to basic analysis in controlled laboratory or hospital settings. We present a collection of materials and device designs for soft, flexible, and stretchable microfluidic systems, including embodiments that integrate wireless communication electronics, which can intimately and robustly bond to the surface of the skin without chemical and mechanical irritation. This integration defines access points for a small set of sweat glands such that perspiration spontaneously initiates routing of sweat through a microfluidic network and set of reservoirs. Embedded chemical analyses respond in colorimetric fashion to markers such as chloride and hydronium ions, glucose, and lactate. Wireless interfaces to digital image capture hardware serve as a means for quantitation. Human studies demonstrated the functionality of this microfluidic device during fitness cycling in a controlled environment and during long-distance bicycle racing in arid, outdoor conditions. The results include quantitative values for sweat rate, total sweat loss, pH, and concentration of chloride and lactate.
A Miniaturized Flexible Patch Based on CNT Fiber Sensors and Highly Integrated SoC for Analysis of Sweat

Abstract:The existing wearable sweat monitoring systems still face drawbacks in poor breathability, high power consumption, and bulky size. Herein, a miniaturized flexible sweat analysis patch based on carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber sensors and highly integrated SoC for potassium ions (K+) and lactate monitoring is proposed. CNT fiber-based sensors are developed to ensure good breathability and flexibility. The customized SoC integrates signal processing, wireless power delivery, wireless communication, and power management onto a single chip, which enjoys a miniaturized dimension (4 mm × 4 mm), requires few off-the-chip components (1 pull-down resistor and 1 decoupling capacitor), and has low power consumption (typically 33 μW in operational mode). The patch has a compact size of only 1.4 cm × 1.2 cm for the main body, accompanied by 3.4 cm 2 for the antenna, which is designed as a hollow shape to further improve breathability. The patch achieves a lactate sensitivity of 0.10 μA·mM -1 and a K + sensitivity of 47.23 mV per decade. Successful human trials were conducted to monitor K + and lactate concentrations in sweat during exercise. Overall, the proposed patch is breathable, power efficient, miniaturized, and thus suitable for long-term sweat monitoring applications.

Abstract:Wearable sweat sensors provide real-time monitoring of biomarkers, enabling individuals to gain real-time insight into their health status. Current sensors primarily rely on electrochemical mechanisms, limiting their capacity for the concurrent detection of multiple analytes. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy offers an alternative approach by providing molecular fingerprint information to facilitate the identification of intricate analytes. In this study, we combine a wearable Janus fabric for efficient sweat collection and a grapefruit optical fiber embedded with Ag nanoparticles as a sensitive SERS probe. The Janus fabric features a superhydrophobic side in contact with the skin and patterned superhydrophilic regions on the opposite surface, facilitating the unidirectional flow of sweat toward these hydrophilic zones. Grapefruit optical fibers feature sharp tips with the ability to penetrate transparent dressings. Its microchannels extract sweat through capillary force, and nanoliter-scale volumes of sweat are sufficient to completely fill them. The Raman signal of sweat components is greatly enhanced by the plasmonic hot spots and accumulates along the fiber length. We demonstrate sensitive detection of sodium lactate and urea in sweat with a detection limit much lower than the physiological concentration levels. Moreover, the platform shows its capability for multicomponent detection and extends to the analysis of real human sweat.

Abstract:The current physical health care system has gradually evolved into a form of virtual hospitals communicating with sensors, which can not only save time but can also diagnose a patient's physical condition in real time. Textile-based wearable sensors have recently been identified as detection platforms with high potential. They are developed for the real-time noninvasive detection of human physiological information to comprehensively analyze the health status of the human body. Sweat comprises various chemical compositions, which can be used as biomarkers to reflect the relevant information of the human physiology, thus providing references for health conditions. Combined together, textile-based sweat sensors are more flexible and comfortable than other conventional sensors, making them easily integrated into the wearable field. In this short review, the research progress of textile-based flexible sweat sensors was reviewed. Three mechanisms commonly used for textile-based sweat sensors were firstly contrasted with an introduction to their materials and preparation processes. The components of textile-based sweat sensors, which mainly consist of a sweat transportation channel and collector, a signal-selection unit, sensing elements and sensor integration and communication technologies, were reviewed. The applications of textile-based sweat sensors with different mechanisms were also presented. Finally, the existing problems and challenges of sweat sensors were summarized, which may contribute to promote their further development.

Abstract:Wearable biosensors monitoring various biomarkers in sweat provide comprehensive and prompt profiling of health states at molecular levels. Cytokines existed in sweat with trace amounts play an important role in cellular activity modulation. Unfortunately, flexible and wearable biosensors for cytokine monitoring have not yet been achieved due to the limitation of membrane-based structure and sensing strategy. Herein, we develop a novel electrochemical fabric based on aptamer-functionalized carbon nanotube/graphene fibers for real-time and in situ monitoring of IL-6, a paramount cytokine biomarker for inflammation and cancer. This fabric system possesses flexibility, anti-fatigue ability and breathability for wearable applications and can apply to different body parts in various forms. Moreover, the electrochemical fabric can track other biomarkers by replacing the coupling aptamer, serving as a universal platform for sweat analysis. This fabric-based platform holds the potential to facilitate an intelligent and personalized health monitoring approach.

Abstract:Wearable sweat sensors hold immense potential for continuous monitoring of physiological parameters non-invasively. However, environmental and physiological changes may lead to reduced sweating, making iontophoresis-induced sweat analysis a more attractive and feasible option for easy-sampling in daily life. Nevertheless, this approach also faces challenges such as analyte concentration being affected by sweat rate variance and sweat dilution. To address these challenges, we have developed a multi-sensing patch for iontophoresis-stimulated sweat detection under sedentary conditions. The platform integrated electrochemical sensor arrays with microfluidic components for a rapid collection and in situ measurement including metabolites (glucose and ethanol) and electrolytes (Na+ and pH) in sweat. The designed microfluidic patch, capable of sequential sweat collection, significantly improved the signal stability at low sweat rate and its performance was verified by software simulation, in vitro analysis, and on-body signal monitoring. Overall, this microfluidic sensing patch opens an exciting avenue for analyzing the perspiring condition of sedentary individuals, making it an attractive option for point-of-care testing applications.

Abstract:The wearable sweat sensing patch fabricated integrates a microfluidic chip, an electrochemical sensing patch, and an on‐site signal processing circuitry capable of simultaneously detecting cortisol, magnesium ions, and pH in sweat. The detection results can be wirelessly transmitted to smartphones in real time to assess a person's mental health. Real‐time monitoring of mental stress biomarkers in sweat provides the possibility to evaluate mental status in a precise manner. In general, wearable sweat sensors suffer from inconvenient sweat collection, low levels of diagnostic biomarkers in sweat, sophisticated signal processing, and challenges with data visualization. To overcome these challenges, herein an integrated wearable sweat‐sensing patch for continuous analysis of stress biomarkers (cortisol, Mg2+, and pH) at rest is demonstrated. The sweat sensing patch comprised a microfluidic chip, a highly sensitive sensing platform, an on‐site signal processing circuitry (SPCs), and a smartphone installed with a home‐developed display software. The sweat collection at rest is realized using a microfluidic chip without perspiration assistance. A ternary composite electrode is designed to obtain good conductivity, high surface area, and massive reactive sites, thereby yielding excellent electrochemical performances and high sensitivity to trace stress biomarkers. The on‐site SPC has the function of signal transduction, conditioning, processing, and wireless transmission. The detection results can be displayed on a smartphone through the software. This work represents a significant scientific and technological advancement toward indexing mental stress status and can be used as an innovative tool for psychological diagnosis.

Abstract:The mass production of multifunctional integrated fiber electrodes is the foundation for achieving largescale wearable applications of fiber or fabric-based electronic devices. Based on the flexible, functional and molecular structure adjustable characteristics of polymer semiconductor materials, a method for segmental in situ synthesis of polyaniline functional layers on long fiber surfaces has been put forward in this work. And then, coated with conductive carbon materials, this allows for the successful continuous preparation of segmental multifunctional integrated fiber electrodes. By modifying the fiber substrate with oxidative treatment, the affinity of the fiber substrate to the aniline substrate can be enhanced, which overcomes the problem of polymer functional layer boundary diffusion caused by capillary wetting or detachment. On this basis, according to a kind of novel textile-based circuit design, a textile-structured integrated circuit module has been developed, which can simultaneously realize continuous monitoring of human sweat pH value, health status judgment, and early warning. Co-woven with the fiber-structured Zn/MnO2 batteries, as well as integrated with mini wireless chips, light-emitting diodes, etc., this integrated circuit textile enables consecutive human body wireless monitoring and timely emergency warning for abnormal situations, demonstrating its potential application in future wearable AI hardware.

Abstract:Sweat biomarkers have the potential to offer valuable clinical insights into an individual's health and disease condition. Current sensors predominantly utilize enzymes and antibodies as biometric components to measure biomarkers present in sweat quantitatively. However, enzymes and antibodies are susceptible to interference by environmental factors, which may affect the performance of the sensor. Herein, we present a wearable microfluidic surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensor that enables the non-invasive and label-free detection of biomarkers in sweat. Concretely, we developed a bimetallic self-assembled anti-opal array structure with uniform hot spots, enhanced the Raman scattering effect, and integrated it into a silk fibroin-based sensing patch. Utilizing a silk fibroin substrate in the wearable SERS sensor imparts desirable properties such as softness, breathability, and biocompatibility, which enables the sensor to establish close contact with the skin without causing chemical or physical irritation. In addition, introducing microfluidic channels enables the controlled and high temporal resolution management of sweat, facilitating more efficient sweat collection. The proposed label-free SERS sensor can offer chemical 'fingerprint' information, enabling the identification of sweat analytes. As an illustration of the feasibility, we have effectively monitored the creatinine and uric acid levels in sweat. This study presents a versatile and highly sensitive approach for the simultaneous detection of biomarkers in human sweat, showcasing significant potential for application in point-of-care monitoring.
