Abstract:In [3], after defining notions of LS category in the simplicial context, the authors show that the geometric simplicial LS category is non-decreasing under strong collapses. However, they do not give examples where it increases strictly, but they conjecture that such an example should exist, and thus that the geometric simplicial LS category is not strong homotopy invariant. The purpose of this note is to provide with such an example. We construct a simplicial complex whose simplicial and geometric simplicial LS categories are different, and using this, we provide an example of a strong collapse that increases the geometric simplicial LS category, thus settling the geometric simplicial LS category not being strong homotopy invariant.

Relative Non-Positive Immersion

Abstract:A 2-complex $K$ has collapsing non-positive immersion if for every combinatorial immersion $X\to K$, where $X$ is finite, connected and does not allow collapses, either $\chi(X)\le 0$ or $X$ is point. This concept is due to Wise who also showed that this property implies local indicability of the fundamental group $\pi_1(K)$. In this paper we study a relative version of collapsing non-positive immersion that can be applied to 2-complex pairs $(L,K)$: The pair has relative collapsing non-positive immersion if for every combinatorial immersion $f\colon X\to L$, where $X$ is finite, connected and does not allow collapses, either $\chi(X)\le \chi(Y)$, where $Y$ is the essential part of the preimage $f^{-1}(K)$, or $X$ is a point. We show that under certain conditions a transitivity law holds: If $(L,K)$ has relative collapsing non-positive immersion and $K$ has collapsing non-positive immersion, then $L$ has collapsing non-positive immersion. This article is partly motivated by the following open question: Do reduced injective labeled oriented trees have collapsing non-positive immersion? We answer this question in the affirmative for certain important special cases.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of nonevasive reduction, and show that for any monotone poset map $\phi:P\to P$, the simplicial complex $\Delta(P)$ {\tt NE}-reduces to $\Delta(Q)$, for any $Q\supseteq{\text{\rm Fix}}\phi$. As a corollary, we prove that for any order-preserving map $\phi:P\to P$ satisfying $\phi(x)\geq x$, for any $x\in P$, the simplicial complex $\Delta(P)$ collapses to $\Delta(\phi(P))$. We also obtain a generalization of Crapo's closure theorem.

The Depth Poset of a Filtered Lefschetz Complex

Abstract:Taking a discrete approach to functions and dynamical systems, this paper integrates the combinatorial gradients in Forman's discrete Morse theory with persistent homology to forge a unified approach to function simplification. The two crucial ingredients in this effort are the Lefschetz complex, which focuses on the homology at the expense of the geometry of the cells, and the shallow pairs, which are birth-death pairs that can double as vectors in discrete Morse theory. The main new concept is the depth poset on the birth-death pairs, which captures all simplifications achieved through canceling shallow pairs. One of its linear extensions is the ordering by persistence.

Abstract:We exhibit a forcing for producing a model with no nowhere dense ultrafilters that satisfies the full Sacks Property. By interleaving this forcing with other forcing notions, a model containing a $(2, {\aleph}_{0})$-selective ultrafilter, but no nowhere dense ultrafilters is produced. It is thus proved that the existence of $(2, {\aleph}_{0})$-selective ultrafilters does not imply the existence of nowhere dense ultrafilters.

Abstract:The \emph{strong collapse} of a simplicial complex, proposed by Barmak and Minian (\emph{Disc. Comp. Geom. 2012}), is a combinatorial collapse of a complex onto its sub-complex. Recently, it has received attention from computational topology researchers, owing to its empirically observed usefulness in simplification and size-reduction of the size of simplicial complexes while preserving the homotopy class. We consider the strong collapse process on random simplicial complexes. For the Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi random clique complex $X(n,c/n)$ on $n$ vertices with edge probability $c/n$ with $c>1$, we show that after any maximal sequence of strong collapses the remaining subcomplex, or \emph{core} must have $(1-\gamma)(1-c\gamma) n+o(n)$ vertices asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.), where $\gamma$ is the least non-negative fixed point of the function $f(x) = \exp\left(-c(1-x)\right)$ in the range $(0,1)$. These are the first theoretical results proved for strong collapses on random (or non-random) simplicial complexes.

Abstract:We upgrade the natural weakly-filtered structure of Fukaya categories discussed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1806.06630" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.06630">arXiv:1806.06630</a> to a genuinely filtered one. The main tools are a Morse-Bott, or 'cluster', model for Fukaya categories and a particular choice of class of perturbation data. We also include the construction of continuation $A_\infty$-functors following <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1604.02540v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1604.02540v2">arXiv:1604.02540v2</a> in the context of filtered Fukaya categories.

Abstract:We define and undertake a systematic study of thick, syndetic, and piecewise syndetic subsets of a Fraïssé structure. Each of these collections forms a family in the sense of Akin and Glasner [1], and we define and study ultrafilters on each of these families, paying special attention to ultrafilters on the thick sets. In the process, we generalize many results of Bergelson, Hindman, and McCutcheon [4]. We also discuss some abstract questions about families implicit in the work of Akin and Glasner.

Abstract:Suppose $\kappa$ is a singular strong limit cardinal of countable cofinality and let $\langle \kappa_{n}: n<\omega \rangle$ be an incrasing sequence of regular cardinals cofinal in $\kappa$. We show that if $cf(2^\kappa)= \kappa^+$, then forcing with the full product $\prod_{n<\omega}Add(\kappa_n,1)$ collapses $2^\kappa$ into $\kappa^+$. This result gives a consistent positive answer to a question of Sy Friedman. We also give a new proof of a result due to Shelah by showing that if the sequence carries a scale of length $\kappa^+,$ then forcing with $\prod_{n<\omega}Add(\kappa_n,1)$ adds a generic filter for $Add(\kappa^+, 1)$, and indeed \[ \prod_{n<\omega}Add(\kappa_n,1)/fin \simeq Add(\kappa^+, 1). \]
A characterization of piecewise $\mathcal{F}$-syndetic sets

Abstract:Some filter relative notions of size, $\left( \mathcal{F},\mathcal{G}\right) $-syndeticity and piecewise $\mathcal{F} $-syndeticity, were defined and applied with clarity and focus by Shuungula, Zelenyuk and Zelenyuk in their paper ``The closure of the smallest ideal of an ultrafilter semigroup.'' These notions are generalizations of the well studied notions of syndeticity and piecewise syndeticity. Since then, there has been an effort to develop the theory around the algebraic structure of the Stone-Čech compactification so that it encompasses these new generalizations. In this direction, we prove a characterization of piecewise $\mathcal{F}$-syndetic sets. This fully answers a conjecture of Christopherson and Johnson. <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2105.09723" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.09723">arXiv:2105.09723</a>

Strong Homotopy Types, Nerves and Collapses

Abstract:We introduce the theory of strong homotopy types of simplicial complexes. Similarly to classical simple homotopy theory, the strong homotopy types can be described by elementary moves. An elementary move in this setting is called a strong collapse and it is a particular kind of simplicial collapse. The advantage of using strong collapses is the existence and uniqueness of cores and their relationship with the nerves of the complexes. From this theory we derive new results for studying simplicial collapsibility with a different point of view. We analyze vertex-transitive simplicial G-actions and prove a particular case of the Evasiveness conjecture for simplicial complexes. Moreover, we reduce the general conjecture to the class of minimal complexes. We also strengthen a result of V. Welker on the barycentric subdivision of collapsible complexes. We obtain this and other results on collapsibility of polyhedra by means of the characterization of the different notions of collapses in terms of finite topological spaces.

Abstract:M.S. Rao recently investigated some sorts of special filters in distributive pseudocomplemented lattices. In our paper we extend this study to lattices which need neither be distributive nor pseudocomplemented. For this sake we define a certain modification of the notion of a pseudocomplement as the set of all maximal elements belonging to the annihilator of the corresponding element. We prove several basic properties of this notion and then define coherent, closed and median filters as well as D-filters. In order to be able to obtain valuable results we often must add some additional assumptions on the underlying lattice, e.g. that this lattice is Stonean or D-Stonean. Our results relate properties of lattices and of corresponding filters. We show how the structure of a lattice influences the form of its filters and vice versa.

Abstract:We build on a 1990 paper of Bukovsky and Coplakova-Hartova. First, we remove the hypothesis of $\textsf{CH}$ from one of their minimality results. Then, using a measurable cardinal, we show that there is a $|\aleph_2^V|=\aleph_1$-minimal extension that is not a $|\aleph_3^V|=\aleph_1$-extension, answering the first of their questions.

Abstract:We present Tanaka's prolongation procedure for filtered structures on manifolds discovered in [Tanaka N., J. Math. Kyoto. Univ. 10 (1970), 1-82] in a spirit of Singer-Sternberg's description of the prolongation of usual G-structures [Singer I.M., Sternberg S., J. Analyse Math. 15 (1965), 1-114; Sternberg S., Prentice-Hall, Inc., Englewood Cliffs, N.J., 1964]. This approach gives a transparent point of view on the Tanaka constructions avoiding many technicalities of the original Tanaka paper.

Abstract:We construct a model of the form $L[A,U]$ that exhibits the simplest structural behavior of $\sigma$-complete ultrafilters in a model of set theory with a single measurable cardinal $\kappa$ , yet satisfies $2^\kappa = \kappa^{++}$. This result establishes a limitation on the extent to which structural properties of ultrafilters can determine the cardinal arithmetic at large cardinals, and answers a question posed by Goldberg concerning the failure of the Continuum Hypothesis at a measurable cardinal in a model of the Ultrapower Axiom. The construction introduces several methods in extensions of embeddings theory and fine-structure-based forcing, designed to control the behavior of non-normal ultrafilters in generic extensions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the poset $\mathbf{OF}(X)$ of free open filters on a given space $X$. In particular, we characterize spaces for which $\mathbf{OF}(X)$ is a lattice. For each $n\in\mathbb{N}$ we construct a scattered space $X$ such that $\mathbf{OF}(X)$ is order isomorphic to the $n$-element chain, which implies the affirmative answer to two questions of Mooney. Assuming CH we construct a scattered space $X$ such that $\mathbf{OF}(X)$ is order isomorphic to $(\omega+1,\geq)$. To prove the latter facts we introduce and investigate a new stratification of ultrafilters which depends on scattered subspaces of $\beta(\kappa)$. Assuming the existence of $n$ measurable cardinals, for every $m_0,\ldots,m_{n}\in\mathbb N$ we construct a space $X$ such that $\mathbf{OF}(X)$ is order isomorphic to $\prod_{i=0}^nm_i$. Also, we show that the existence of a metric space possessing a free $\omega_1$-complete closed, $G_\delta$, $F_{\sigma}$ or Borel ultrafilter is equivalent to the existence of a measurable cardinal.
