Abstract:Blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) self-assembling into soft cubic crystalline structures possess significant applications in the field of dynamic photoelectron spectroscopy. However, three scientific challenges limit their broader application, namely, the difficulty to form a free-standing structure due to fluidity, dependence on nanoparticles or polymer matrix to widen the BP temperature range, and high working voltages to reorientate the LCMs. Herein, we proposed a new concept of free-standing BPLC microcapsules (BPLCMs) prepared by microfluidic emulsification and interfacial polymerization. The temperature range of BPLCs could be widened by surface anchoring and physical confinement. The BPLCMs built a color library in the visible region in the thermal response process. Most importantly, the stable BPLCMs exhibited a reversible surface-switch mode driven by an electric field lower than 0.55 V mu m(-1), which was the lowest record for BPLCs. The BPLCMs demonstrate intriguing prospects in the fields of smart display and reversible sensors.

Abstract:The electro-optic effect is the working principle of blue phase (BP) liquid crystals, and it describes the relationship between the field-induced birefringence of BPs and the field strength. Due to the electrostriction of BP crystals under the electric field, an orthorhombic or tetragonal crystal is usually obtained when the field is applied along one of the twofold axes of a BP crystal, leading to the optical biaxiality under electric field. Such field-induced optical biaxiality of BPs has been predicted and observed, but its dependence on the field strength has not been investigated. In this research, we analyze the electro-optics in the field-perpendicular direction by measuring the birefringence in highly ordered BP I(110) crystals perpendicular to the electric field. Results reveal that BP I crystals in the field-perpendicular direction show an electro-optic coefficient of the order of 10−10 m/V2 that may result from the large lattice deformation of BP crystals perpendicular to the electric field. Our research provides important experimental evidence for the tensorial properties of BP Kerr effect and may have important implications on the engineering of BP electro-optical devices in practical applications.

Abstract:A correlation between the orientation of the lattice plane of liquid crystal blue phase (BP) and the surface free energy of the solid substrates which were coated with a polyimide thin layer or treated by a silane coupling reagent was investigated. The lattice plane was identified from the optical texture observation and the reflection spectra of BP. It was confirmed that the orientation of the lattice plane of BP was closely related to the surface free energy of the substrate. In particular, the area fraction of the lattice plane {110} of BP I increased as the polar component (γp) decreased.

Abstract:Phase transition between nematic and isotropic liquid crystal is a very weak first order phase transition. We avoid to use the normal Landau-de Gennes's free energy that reduces a strong first order transition, and set up a data base of free energy calculated by means of Tao-Sheng Lin's extended molecular field theory that can explain the experiments of the equilibrium properties of nematic liquid crystal very well. Then we use the free energy method of lattice Boltzmann developed by Oxford group to study the phase decomposition, pattern formation in the now of the liquid crystal near transition temperature.
Directed crystalline symmetry transformation of blue-phase liquid crystals by reverse electrostriction

Abstract:Soft-matter-based photonic crystals like blue-phase liquid crystals (BPLC) have potential applications in wide-ranging photonic and bio-chemical systems. To date, however, there are limitations in the fabrication of large monocrystalline BPLCs. Traditional crystal-growth process involves the transition from a high-temperature disordered phase to an ordered (blue) phase and is generally slow (takes hours) with limited achievable lattice structures, and efforts to improve molecular alignment through post-crystallization field application typically prove ineffective. Here we report a systematic study on the molecular self-assembly dynamics of BPLC starting from a highly ordered phase in which all molecules are unidirectionally aligned by a strong electric field. We have discovered that, near the high-temperature end of the blue phase, if the applied field strength is then switched to an intermediate level or simply turned off, large-area monocrystalline BPLCs of various symmetries (tetragonal, orthorhombic, cubic) can be formed in minutes. Subsequent temperature tuning of the single crystal at a fixed applied field allows access to different lattice parameters and the formation of never-before-seen monoclinic structures. The formed crystals remain stable upon field removal. The diversity of stable monocrystalline BPLCs with widely tunable crystalline symmetries, band structures, and optical dispersions will significantly improve and expand their application potentials.
Coarse-grained molecular simulation of the effect of liquid crystal molecular pitch on structure in cylindrical confinement

Abstract:Blue phases (BPs) consist of three-dimensional self-assembled structures formed by a double-twisted columnar arrangement of liquid crystal molecules. Although their unique optical and structural properties render BPs particularly useful for applications such as liquid crystal displays, BPs typically appear in a narrow temperature range between the isotropic and nematic phases. This thermodynamic instability impedes their practical applicability. However, the simulations we present here showed that, in a quasi-one-dimensional system confined to nanospace, a phase equivalent to the BP appears and persists between the nematic and smectic phases. Confinement to a nanotube (NT) with a relatively small radius enables the BP to be maintained over a wide temperature range, whereas for an NT with a relatively larger radius, the BP appears only in a very narrow temperature range between the aforementioned phases. We additionally showed that the pitch of the BP is dependent on and can be controlled by adjusting the radius of the NTs. This finding has significant implications for the potential application of these materials in fields such as photonics and chiral separation technologies.
Retention and Deformation of the Blue Phases in Liquid Crystalline Elastomers

Abstract:The blue phases are observed in highly chiral liquid crystalline compositions that nascently organize into a three-dimensional, crystalline nanostructure. The periodicity of the unit cell lattice parameters is on the order of the wavelength of visible light and accordingly, the blue phases exhibit a selective reflection as a photonic crystal. Here, we detail the synthesis of liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) that retain blue phase I, blue phase II, and blue phase III. The mechanical properties and deformation of LCEs retaining the blue phases are contrasted to the cholesteric phase in fully solid elastomers with glass transition temperatures below room temperature. Mechanical deformation and chemical swelling of the lightly crosslinked polymer networks induces lattice asymmetry in the blue phase LCE evident in the tuning of the selective reflection. The lattice periodicity of the blue phase LCE is minimally affected by temperature. The oblique lattice planes of the blue phase LCEs tilt and red-shift in response to mechanical deformation. The retention of the blue phases in fully solid, elastomeric films could enable new functional implementations in photonics, sensing, and energy applications.

Abstract:A series of asymmetric and symmetric bent-shaped molecules with branched terminals were synthesized and characterized. Their effects on inducing blue phase and electro-optical performances were compared and analyzed experimentally. It was found that the asymmetric and symmetric compounds almost have the same effect on inducing and stabilizing blue phase, but the electro-optical performance of mixtures doped with asymmetric compounds are much better than that of mixtures doped with symmetric compounds for they have a totally different dielectric anisotropy which can contribute to a larger Kerr constant.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) exhibit significant viscoelasticity. Although the rate-dependent stress-strain relation of LCEs has already been widely observed, the effect of the in-tricate interplay of director rotation and network extension on the viscoelastic behavior of main-chain LCEs remains inadequately understood. In this study, we report real-time measurements of the stress, director rotation, and all strain components in main-chain nematic LCEs subjected to uniaxial tension both parallel and tilted to the initial directors at different loading rates and relax-ation tests. We find that both network extension and director rotation play roles in viscoelastici-ty, and the characteristic relaxation time of the network extension is much larger than that of the director rotation. Interestingly, the gradual change of the director in a long-time relaxation indi-cates the director reorientation delay is not solely due to the viscous rotation of liquid crystals but also arises from its coupling with the highly viscous network. Additionally, significant rate-dependent shear strain occurs in LCEs under uniaxial tension, showing non-monotonic changes when the angle between the stretching and the initial director is large enough. Finally, a viscoe-lastic constitutive model, only considering the viscosity of the network by introducing multiplica-tive decomposition of the deformation gradient, is utilized to manifest the relation between rate-dependent macroscopic deformation and microscopic director rotation in LCEs.

Abstract:A self-assembled three-dimensional (3D) nanomaterial, blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC), with elastic deformation is the aim of a stimuli-responsive material because it combines the 3D photonic nanostructure and the rubber elasticity of the elastomer network. However, there is still a lack of a flexible approach to preparing BPLC films with high elastic deformation and a low glass-transition temperature. Here, we develop a reproducible and scalable two-step protocol of the thiol-acrylate Michael addition (TAMA)–photopolymerization reaction approach for the preparation of high-performance, low glass-transition temperature, and uniform BPLC films. Linear chain extension occurs through the TAMA reaction, and the cross-link density and molecular weight can be programed by varying the reaction time, resulting in the phase transition from blue phase I to the chiral nematic phase. The cross-linking density, molecular weight, and resulting structure can be frozen by forming an elastic network using photopolymerization. The results show that the increase of elastic deformation by 3 times, shift of the structural color >186 nm, and lowering of the glass-transition temperature to −34.93 °C are successfully achieved. In addition, the BPLC film pattern can sustain repeatable, rapid, and continuous elastic deformation and a uniform structural color change when triggered by multiple stimuli of temperature, stretching, and organic vapor. This work provides new insights into customizable stimuli-responsive 3D photonic nanostructured materials, facilitating their application in sensing, display, and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:In a narrow temperature window in going from the isotropic to highly chiral orders, cholesteric liquid crystals exhibit so-called blue phases, consisting of different morphologies of long, space-filling double twisted cylinders. Those of cubic spatial symmetry have attracted considerable attention in recent years as templates for soft photonic materials. The latter often requires the creation of monodomains of predefined orientation and size, but their engineering is complicated by a lack of comprehensive understanding of how blue phases nucleate and transform into each other at a submicrometer length scale. In this work, we accomplish this by intercepting nucleation processes at intermediate stages with fast cross-linking of a stabilizing polymer matrix. We reveal using transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron small-angle X-ray diffraction, and angle-resolved microspectroscopy that the grid of double-twisted cylinders undergoes highly coordinated, diffusionless transformations. In light of our findings, the implementation of several applications is discussed, such as temperature-switchable QR codes, micro-area lasing, and fabrication of blue phase liquid crystals with large domain sizes.

Abstract:We describe the occurence and properties of liquid crystal phases showing two dimensional splay and bend distortions which are stabilised by flexoelectric interactions. These phases are characterised by regions of locally double splayed order separated by topological defects and are thus highly analogous to the blue phases of cholesteric liquid crystals. We present a mean field analysis based upon the Landau--de Gennes Q-tensor theory and construct a phase diagram for flexoelectric structures using analytic and numerical results. We stress the similarities and discrepancies between the cholesteric and flexoelectric cases.

Abstract:On the basis of a generalization of the Rapini-Papoular expression [J. Phys. (Paris) Colloq. 30, C4-54 (1969)] for the anchoring energy, the rigorous expressions for the threshold and saturation fields are derived analytically, in detail, for a field-controlled twisted chiral nematic slab with weak boundary coupling. The surface anchoring energy of the Rapini-Papoular type for a twisted nematic slab should be generally expressed as the interfacial energy per unit area for a two-dimensional deformation which is a nonlinear combination of the azimuthal and polar angles. Applying a variational calculation method for the two-dimensional problem to the total free energy, that is the sum of the bulk energy and the surface energy, we derive general torque balance equations which describe the equilibrium deformation of the director.
Elasticity-Dependent Self-assembly of Micro-Templated Chromonic Liquid Crystal Films

Abstract:We explore micropatterned director structures of aqueous lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal (LCLC) films created on square lattice cylindrical-micropost substrates. The structures are manipulated by modulating the LCLC mesophases and their elastic properties via concentration through drying. Nematic LCLC films exhibit preferred bistable alignment along the diagonals of the micropost lattice. Columnar LCLC films, dried from nematics, form two distinct director and defect configurations: a diagonally aligned director pattern with local squares of defects, and an off-diagonal configuration with zig-zag defects. The formation of these states appears to be tied to the relative splay and bend free energy costs of the initial nematic films. The observed nematic and columnar configurations are understood numerically using a Landau-de Gennes free energy model. Among other attributes, the work provide first examples of quasi-2D micropatterning of LC films in the columnar phase and lyotropic LC films in general, and it demonstrates alignment and configuration switching of typically difficult-to-align LCLC films via bulk elastic properties.

Abstract:This paper reports a distorted colouring triangular lattice (DCT) synthesized with potassium atoms deposited on a two‐dimensional blue phosphorene‐gold network on Au(111) and use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to investigate the structural and electronic flat band properties of the assembled DCT lattice. This work provides a promising platform for realizing flat‐band caused strongly correlated physics in self‐assembled DCT lattice. Dispersionless flat bands (FBs) in momentum space, given rise to electron destructive interference in frustrated lattices, offer opportunities to enhance electronic correlations and host exotic many‐body phenomena, such as Wigner crystal, fractional quantum hall state, and superconductivity. Despite successes in theory, great challenges remain in experimentally realizing FBs in frustrated lattices due to thermodynamically structural instability. Here, the observation of electronic FB in a potassium distorted colouring triangle (DCT) lattice is reported, which is supported on a blue phosphorene‐gold network. It is verified that the interaction between potassium and the underlayer dominates and stabilizes the frustrated structures. Two‐dimensional electron gas is modulated by the DCT lattice, and in turn results in a FB dispersion due to destructive quantum interferences. The FB exhibits suppressed bandwidth with high density of states, which is directly observed by scanning tunneling microscopy and confirmed by the first‐principles calculation. This work demonstrates that DCT lattice is a promising platform to study FB physics and explore exotic phenomena of correlation and topological matters.

This paper calculates photonic band structures of such crystals with lattice structure transformation, and demonstrates the existence of complete band gaps for some intermediate lattices. Thus, it becomes possible to use the electrorheological effect to achieve photonic crystals with desired photonic gap properties resulting from tunable structures.

Abstract:A lattice Boltzmann scheme is presented which recovers the dynamics of nematic and chiral liquid crystals; the method essentially gives solutions to the Qian-Sheng equations for the evolution of the velocity and tensor order-parameter fields. The resulting algorithm is able to include five independent Leslie viscosities, a Landau-deGennes free energy which introduces three or more elastic constants, a temperature dependent order parameter, surface anchoring and viscosity coefficients, flexo-electric and order electricity and chirality. When combined with a solver for the Maxwell equations associated with the electric field, the algorithm is able to provide a full 'device solver' for a liquid crystal display. Coupled lattice Boltzmann schemes are used to capture the evolution of the fast momentum and slow director motions in a computationally efficient way. The method is shown to give results in close agreement with analytical results for a number of validating examples. The use of the method is illustrated through the simulation of the motion of defects in a zenithal bistable liquid crystal device.
In Situ Optical Characterization of Twinning in Liquid Crystalline Blue Phases

Abstract:Crystal twinning is an intergrowth of two or more single crystals of the same species with specific crystallographic relations in their orientations. Here, we perform microscopic optical characterization of (211) twins in the three-dimensional liquid crystalline phase known as the blue phase (BP), with I4132 space group symmetry. We describe the effect of twinning on the optical diffraction pattern-Kossel pattern-of blue phases and analyze the patterns to deduce structural information such as the twin elements and the previously unnoticed deviations from the perfect cubic structure at zero electric field. Further, we obtain in situ observations as a field is applied along the [110] direction of the twinning crystals and find that the twin boundary shows a pinning effect that defines the orientation of the twinned pair through the cubic-to-orthogonal structure transformation. Our findings not only provide important insights for the application of BPs as electro-optic crystals but also present a step in understanding the hierarchical structures that are crystallographic.

Abstract:It is in situ characterized by multiple approaches for the thermal‐induced evolution of structure/optical properties of PSBP (with different polymer content), such as variable‐temperature ultra‐small‐angle X‐ray diffraction, Kossel diffraction, and polarized optical microscopy, which presents a comprehensive understanding for the corresponding relationship of the optical signal, texture, lattice structure and polymer network of PSBP by direct experimental data. Polymer stabilized blue phase (PSBP) liquid crystal has aroused wide attention due to its broad temperature range and potential applications in flexible display, multi‐mode monitor, and mirrorless laser based on its well‐compatible stability and multi‐responsiveness, such as electricity, humidity, and temperature. Temperature produces an important effect on the structure/optical properties of PSBP, but there lack of detailed investigation on thermal‐induced deformation and its influence on the optical performance of PSBP. Here, the thermal‐induced evolution of structure/optical properties of PSBP with different polymer content is in situ characterized by variable‐temperature ultra‐small‐angle X‐ray diffraction, Kossel diffraction, and polarized optical microscopy. A restricted deformation of PSBP cubic lattice is revealed by the shift of reflective wavelength and evolution of Kossel diagrams, which is mainly attributed to the thermal‐induced phase transition/separation of non‐polymerized components. The thermal stability of PSBP is improved by increased polymer content based on the limited deformation ability. This work is significant for the design of novel functional material, which paves the way for the preparation of photonic crystal soft materials with high stability and optical quality.
