Abstract:Stress mindsets are the meta-cognitive processes that lead individuals to perceive stress as enhancing or debilitating to performance, health, and well-being. As stress mindsets impact how individuals experience stressful events, improving these mindsets could lead to positive outcomes. This study hypothesized that improving stress mindsets could also mitigate co- rumination. Indeed, having non-solution-focused excessive discussions about a problem with a friend may make this problem appear more salient and harder to find a solution for. Therefore, those with negative stress mindsets may co-ruminate about their stress responses and consequently, increase the saliency of their experience of stress. Thus, manipulating stress mindsets towards more enhancing ones may mitigate co-rumination. The purpose of this study was to determine if a novel short intervention (four videos of 5minutes each to educate youth about the stress response and its utility) improved stress mindsets and consequently, diminished co-rumination in youth compared to a control condition. Using an online experimental design, we randomly exposed 233 Quebec (province in Canada) youth aged 14 to 17 (83% female) to the intervention or a control condition. Stress mindsets and co-rumination were measured pre-and post-intervention using the Stress Mindset-Measure General and a shortened version of the Co-Rumination Questionnaire. Results revealed that the intervention content successfully instilled a stress-can-be-enhancing mindset compared to the control condition, though this change in stress mindsets did not affect co-rumination. Nevertheless, these results indicate that the intervention is a cost-effective, rapid, and efficient way to help adolescents view stress more positively in their daily lives.
