Abstract:This letter focuses on a spatial modulation (SM)-based multiple input single output optical wireless communication system. In the system, both input-dependent noise and finite alphabet are employed. Based on information theory, the theoretical expressions of the mutual information and its lower bound are derived. By maximizing the minimum distance, an optimization problem for precoding design is formulated. Then, an interior point method-based iteration algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed SM scheme outperforms that of the conventional, choosing the best-gain channel scheme. Moreover, the proposed precoding scheme can provide better system performance than the scheme without precoding.

Abstract:The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided index modulation (IM) is a promising technology for next-generation wireless communications. However, acquiring channel state information (CSI) for RIS-based IM requires expensive pilot overhead, especially for the IM in multiple domains. In this paper, a novel rectangular differential reflecting spatial modulation (RDRSM) system is proposed for the RIS-aided multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. Specifically, the proposed multi-antenna-activated RDRSM (M-RDRSM) scheme utilizes a rectangular dispersion matrix (DM) to jointly map a digital beamforming (DBF) weight vector and a RIS reflection pattern to perform the rectangular differential modulation. A thorough analysis presents that the proposed M-RDRSM scheme can achieve high-spectral efficiency, low complexity of the system, and noncoherent decoding without prior knowledge of CSI in the space-reflection dual-domain IM. Further, the proposed M-RDRSM scheme is simplified to a single-antenna-activated RDRSM (S-RDRSM) scheme, which can reduce the hardware cost and avoid the inter-antenna synchronization problem more effectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RDRSM scheme performs better in terms of bit error rate performance and achieve a lower decoding complexity than the existing correlated differential IM schemes with the same achievable spectral efficiency.

Abstract:Recently, a scheme called Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) with Generalized Index Modulation (OFDM-GIM) is proposed, in which the number of active subcarriers in an OFDM sub-block is adjustable and a higher spectral efficiency is achieved compared with the conventional Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing with Index Modulation(OFDM-IM) scheme. In this paper, based on the general index modulation structure, a spectrum-efficient Index Modulation with Improved Mapping is proposed. In this scheme, each sub-block can use different constellation mappings as well as different numbers of active subcarriers to transmit information. We further propose the corresponding transmitter and the receiver structures. The simulation results show that the proposed system achieves a higher spectrum efficiency and better BER performance compared with the existing OFDM-IM schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, a reconfigurable intelligent surface based multidimensional index modulation multiple access (RIS-MD-IMMA) scheme is proposed to fully utilize the potential of index modulation for multiple access in a RIS environment. In the proposed scheme, the information of different users is transmitted using symbols with different index entities, and the receiver detects the respective index information independently. Compared with the traditional RIS-assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (RIS-NOMA) scheme, the proposed scheme mitigates intra-cluster interference among users and eliminates superposition coding and successive interference cancellation operations needed in NOMA. To reduce the required power consumption and computational complexity of the receiver detection, a low-complexity detection algorithm for RIS-MD-IMMA is proposed. The simulation analysis results show that RIS-MD-IMMA performs better in terms of both the number of serviceable users and bit error rate performance compared to RIS-NOMA.
Offset Spatial Modulation: An Efficient Solution For Single-Rf Mimo

Abstract:Spatial Modulation (SM) has the unique advantage of its single-radio frequency (RF) structure compared to conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. However, the transmission rate of SM-MIMO is decided by the maximal switching frequency when it switches between the RF chain and transmit antennas, which has been a bottleneck for its applications in future broadband wireless communications. For alleviating this problem, in this paper, a class of novel offset spatial modulation (OSM) schemes are proposed with the aid of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Compared to conventional SM, the proposed OSM scheme is capable of reducing the switching frequency of the RF chain, by introducing an offset between the connected RF chain and the index of the activated antenna. Furthermore, in some extreme conditions, OSM can even work without RF switching while maintaining the single-RF advantage of conventional SM-MIMO. Through theoretical analysis, we also develop a bit-error rate (BER) performance bound for the proposed OSM system. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that OSM outperforms its counterparts including conventional SM and CSI-aided SM, while offering a simplified RF-switching structure.

Abstract:This paper proposes a beamspace modulation scheme based on 3D multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), which effectively improves the system capacity and the bit error rate (BER) performance. In the proposed scheme, instead of the traditional equal-probability activation, the beam is adaptively activated with an optimized probability according to the actual channel quality, which reduces the capacity loss caused by the difference in channel quality during the index modulation process. In the case of making full use of all antennas to obtain the beamforming gain, we give a specific and effective coding and modulation scheme. Meanwhile, in order to reduce the complexity of detection, we also proposed a detection algorithm that can jointly recover the index information and the data information. Simulation results prove the feasibility of the proposed beamspace modulation scheme, which shows significant improvements in both capacity and BER performances with relatively low detection complexity.

Abstract:Recently, a class of novel spatial modulation (SM) schemes, termed offset spatial modulation (OSM), were developed to reduce the radio frequency (RF) switching frequency, in the context of multiple-input single-output (MISO) transmission. In this paper, the structure of original OSM is extended to adapt multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems by introducing multiple receive antennas (MRA). The detailed system design is presented and further developed for offset space shift keying (OSSK). Furthermore, the theoretical bounds of bit-error rate (BER) performance for the proposed OSM-MRA and OSSK-MRA systems are both quantified. It is demonstrated that the proposed OSM-MRA and OSSK-MRA systems outperform their counterparts including conventional OSM and OSSK with improved spectral efficiency.

Abstract:With the advantages of providing numerous multiplexing channels and transmitting index symbols without energy consumption, orbital angular momentum (OAM) technology and the index modulation (IM) scheme have become increasingly prominent in improving spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). In this paper, an enhanced OAM-IM communication system based on the metasurface is proposed for improving both SE and EE. As the generator and demultiplexer for multiplexing OAM beams, the metasurface can not only improve the system bandwidth and reduce system complexity, but also avoid the mode degeneracy problem in traditional OAM-IM systems, thereby significantly increasing the number of available modes. Moreover, the improvement in index rules enabled the increase in the index symbol information and multiplexing channels, further exploiting the potential of the OAM-IM scheme to improve SE. The countermeasures adapted to different modulation formats have been discussed, while the advantages of the enhanced OAM-IM scheme in improving capacity and EE have been verified by simulations. At last, with the joint support of the metasurface and photonics-aided THz communication links, the feasibility and generality of the enhanced OAM-IM schemes have been demonstrated through high-speed communication experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel generalized space-code index modulation (GSCIM) scheme for spectrum-efficient and energy-saving transmission. In our proposed scheme, the input information bits are transmitted not only by modulated symbols, but also by the activated transmit antennas pattern and the selected spreading code patterns for the in-phase and quadrature components. Due to the increase of the index dimension, more information bits can be implicitly transmitted, which can improve energy efficiency and have a higher data rate compared with spatial modulation (SM), generalized SM (GSM), generalized CIM-aided SM (GCIM-SM) and CIM-aided quadrature spatial modulation (CIM-QSM). In order to further reduce the complexity of despreading-based maximum likelihood (ML) detection, we propose an enhanced low-complexity detector that can achieve near-ML error performance. An analytical upper bound on the average bit error probability associated with the optimal ML detection is derived, which is verified by simulation results. Simulation results also show that the proposed GSCIM scheme outperforms SM, GSM, GCIM-SM and CIM-QSM schemes in terms of error performance.

Towards Higher Spectral Efficiency: Spatial Path Index Modulation Improves Millimeter-Wave Hybrid Beamforming

Abstract:The combination of millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and index modulation (IM) technique has recently constituted a novel form of mmWave hybrid beamforming. Lots of studies have been conducted to show that such system has the potential to outperform conventional mmWave-MIMOs with respect to spectral efficiency (SE). Most of the current works only focused on designing hybrid beamforming structures to empirically achieve higher SE performance. However, a fundamental question that whether IM technique can truly improve the SE of current mmWave hybrid beamforming is still left unanswered. Against such background, in this work we firstly extend the IM-assisted mmWave system to a more generalized version, i.e. a spatial path index modulation aided mmWave (SPIM-mmWave) system, which subsumes both IM-assisted and conventional mmWave-MIMO systems as its special cases. Based on the framework of SPIM-mmWave, a fundamental study is conducted towards a theoretic condition under which SPIM-mmWave guarantees to outperform conventional mmWave-MIMO schemes. It is demonstrated that, under a specific channel condition and noise level (which will be explicitly given by our work), SPIM-mmWave guarantees to outperform conventional mmWave-MIMO systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new mixed differential and index modulation framework for noncoherent multiuser massive single-input multiple-output (SIMO) systems. While differential modulation and detection is a popular noncoherent scheme, its constellation collisions limit the resulting error performance. To address this issue, we introduce a user with binary index modulation (IM) among the differential users, achieving much reduced collisions. We then analyze a three-user SIMO system with binary modulations, attained a closed-form bit error rate (BER) expression with a fast noncoherent maximum-likelihood (ML) detection algorithm for each user. Furthermore, a closed-form optimal power loading vector is derived by minimizing the worst-case BER under individual power constraints. Finally, an efficient one-dimensional bisection search algorithm is employed to optimize constellations for arbitrary numbers of differential users and constellation sizes by minimizing the system BER. Simulation results validate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme compared to existing differential schemes.

Abstract:The application of hybrid precoding in millimeter wave (mm-wave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has been proven effective for reducing the number of radio frequency (RF) chains. However, the maximum number of independent data streams is conventionally restricted by the number of RF chains, which limits the spatial multiplexing gain. To further improve the achievable spectral efficiency (SE), in this paper we propose a generalized spatial modulation aided mm-wave MIMO system to convey an extra data stream via the index of the active antennas group, while no extra RF chain is required. Moreover, we propose a hybrid analog and digital precoding scheme for SE maximization. Based on a narrowband mm-wave-MIMO channel assumption, a closed-form lower bound is derived to quantify the achievable SE of the proposed system. By utilizing this lower bound as the cost function, a two-step algorithm is proposed to optimize the hybrid precoder. The proposed algorithm not only utilizes the concavity of the cost function over the digital power allocation vector but also invokes the convex l(infinity) relaxation to handle the non-convex constraint imposed by analog precoding. Finally, the proposed scheme is shown via simulations to outperform state-of-the-art mm-wave MIMO schemes in terms of achievable SE.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has attracted much attention as it is convenient to implement and robust to multiple path fading. However, the system performance of OFDM will be degraded seriously in highspeed wireless communications, since it is much sensitive to severe inter-carrier interference (ICI) caused by highspeed vehicles. Recently, a novel modified OFDM system, called interleaved subcarrier index modulation OFDM (ISIM-OFDM) which modulates part of the information bits by the indices of OFDM subcarriers, is proposed for mitigating the ICI of traditional OFDM system, so as to achieve a better performance. In this paper, we expand this system to Multiple Input Multiple Output occasion. Through the simulation result with Maximum likelihood detection (ML), the MIMO-OFDM with ISIM has lower bit error ratio (BER) than MIMO-OFDM with the same spectral efficiency. What's more, Minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection is also fit for MIMO-ISIMOFDM system as a low complexity detection algorithm.
DHT-OFDM Based Spatial Modulation for Optical Wireless Communication

Abstract:The combination of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and spatial modulation (SM) can enhance the capacity of optical wireless communication (OWC) systems with low complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel SM scheme for intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) OWC systems by employing discrete Hartley transform based OFDM (DHT-OFDM). Due to the use of DHT with one-dimensional constellations, the Hermitian symmetry constraint, which is generally imposed in conventional discrete Fourier transform based OFDM (DFT-OFDM) to obtain a real-valued output signal, is not required in DHT-OFDM. As a result, DHT-OFDM based SM can achieve much higher spectral efficiency than that of DFT-OFDM based SM in OWC systems. Simulation results show that, for an indoor 4×4 SM-OWC system with a spectral efficiency of 6 bits/s/Hz, DHT-OFDM achieves a remarkable 4.5-dB transmit signal-to-noise ratio reduction for an overall bit error rate of 10 -3 in comparison to conventional DFT-OFDM.

Abstract:Optical spatial modulation (OSM) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are two promising techniques for bandlimited intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) optical wireless communication (OWC) systems. In this paper, we for the first time propose a novel enhanced OFDM-based OSM scheme for spectral efficiency improvement of ban-dlimited IM/DD OWC systems. The proposed enhanced OFDM-based OSM scheme can be considered as the combination of time-domain OSM (TD-OSM) and non-Hermitian symmetry OFDM (NHS-OFDM). In an OWC system adopting enhanced OFDM-based OSM, a pair of light-emitting diode (LED) transmitters are selected from the LED array, which are used to separately transmit the real and imaginary parts of a complex-valued NHS-OFDM signal. A modified maximum-likelihood (ML) detector is further developed to efficiently estimate the indexes of the LED pair and the real and imaginary parts of the transmitted complex-valued NHS-OFDM signal. We show that the proposed enhanced OFDM-based OSM scheme can achieve substantially improved spectral efficiency with moderate inter-channel interference and low transceiver complexity. Simulation results clearly verify the superiority of the proposed enhanced OFDM-based OSM scheme over the existing OFDM-based OSM schemes.
Design of Space-Frequency Index Modulation Waveforms for MIMO–OFDM Heterogeneous Networks

Abstract:In this paper, a novel framework to efficiently design the waveforms toward heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is proposed. The proposed scheme combines the index modulation (IM) concept with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques and jointly considers the resources on both spatial and frequency domains to optimize the transmission signals. Furthermore, a generalized union bound expression is derived first to disclose the potential diversity gain for the spatial-frequency index modulation (SFIM) system and based on the developed bound different impacts of activating spatial and frequency domains resources for transmission are analyzed. Following the theoretical insights, two novel transmit schemes, termed as enhanced SFIM with non-overlap (ESFIM-NO) and enhanced SFIM with overlap (ESFIM-O), toward higher diversity gains are proposed. We show that the proposed methods can significantly improve the diversity of both index and amplitude phase modulation (APM) domains for achieving higher reliability for the entire HetNets. Finally, the simulation results are given to verify the theoretical analysis and system error performance.

Abstract:In this letter, an adaptive spatial modulation (ASM) transmission scheme is proposed to achieve better system performance under a fixed data rate. The proposed scheme is based on a developed modulation order selection criterion (MOSC), so as to minimize the conditioned pairwise error probability (PEP) for each channel realization. Furthermore, the special informationconveying mode of spatial modulation (SM) is utilized to reduce the complexity of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive SM scheme provides considerable system performance improvement compared to original SM system.

Abstract:The programmable metasurface (MTS), which can enhance the signal quality by flexibly manipulating the electromagnetic (EM) responses of reflected waves, has emerged as a promising technology for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission due to its superior energy efficiency and cost-effective hardware implementations. In this paper, we consider a multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) system equipped with a MTS-based multi-feed transmitter, where an array of metallic elements is split into several subarrays (SAs), each irradiated by a unique radio-frequency (RF) feed. Additionally, each user is allocated with one unique RF-feed-SA pair for data services. Then we develop a novel index modulation (IM) scheme based on this array-of-SA (AoSA) structure of the MTS, named as MTS-SA -IM. More specifically, the allocation strategy of the SAs to different users, termed as SA allocation pattern (SAP), is flexibly controlled by the information bits. In other words, aside from classical amplitude/phase modulation bits, additional binary bits, referred to as index bits, can be embedded into the indices of the allocated SAs without extra power consumption, leading to enhancement of both spectrum and energy efficiencies. Furthermore, we propose a distributed mapping rule design between the index bits and SAPs, which guarantees that the index bits at each user are exclusively dependent on the index of its own allocated SA. By constructing a binary-tree structure, a general form of the proposed distributed mapping rule is generated recursively, which can be extended to the cases of arbitrary number of users. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MTS is capable of achieving desirable performance gain over its classical counterpart.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a composite multiple-mode orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (C-MM-OFDM-IM) scheme to increase the spectral efficiency (SE) of OFDM-IM systems by extending the indexing to the energy and constellation domains. In C-MM-OFDM-IM, the information bits are mapped to not only the subcarrier activation patterns (SAPs) and modulation symbols, but also the energy allocation patterns (EAPs) and constellation activation patterns (CAPs). To cope with the practical situations, we propose a variant IM scheme named C-MM-OFDM-IM-II to build a new mapping rule between information bits and the increased CAPs, capable of further increasing the SE of C-MM-OFDM-IM. Upper-bounded bit error rate (BER) and lower-bounded achievable rate are both derived in closed-form to evaluate the performance of C-MM-OFDM-IM(-II). Moreover, we further propose two enhanced schemes, named generalized C-MM-OFDM-IM(-II) and C-MM-OFDM with in-phase/quadrature IM(-II), where the former jointly considers all SAPs, EAPs, CAPs and modulated symbols, while the latter expands the index implementation to the in-phase and quadrature constellation domains. Simulation results show that C-MM-OFDM-IM(-II) outperforms the conventional OFDM-IM related schemes, especially in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, and verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis for the upper-bounded BER and achievable rate.

Abstract:In this letter, a new multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (MIMO-OFDM-IM) scheme achieving diversity is proposed. It combines space-frequency code and MIMO-OFDM-IM to take advantage of both, and we call it as the space-frequency coded index modulation (SFC-IM) scheme. The proposed SFC-IM scheme can achieve the transmit diversity order of 2 by optimizing an angle parameter. A linear-complexity maximum likelihood receiver is given for the new scheme, which profits from the orthogonality between the real and imaginary parts of the symbols contained in the SFC-IM codewords. The simulation results show the performance advantage of the SFC-IM scheme over the MIMO-OFDM-IM scheme.
