Abstract:Black phosphorus presents a very anisotropic crystal structure, making it a potential candidate for hyperbolic plasmonics, characterized by a permittivity tensor where one of the principal components is metallic and the other dielectric. Here we demonstrate that atomically thin black phosphorus can be engineered to be a hyperbolic material operating in a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum from the entire visible spectrum to ultraviolet. With the introduction of an optical gain, a new hyperbolic region emerges in the infrared. The character of this hyperbolic plasmon depends on the interplay between gain and loss along the two crystalline directions.

Abstract:Two pyrene-imidazole-based structural isomers, axisymmetric syn-PyDTI and centrosymmetric anti-PyDTI, have been easily produced and successfully separated in a one-pot reaction. Crystalline syn-PyDTI exhibited a 2-fold higher quantum efficiency than anti-PyDTI and displayed a much better performance in OLEDs with a eta(c.max) of 11.4 cd A(-1) (8.8 cd A(-1) for anti-PyDTI), although they possess the same apparent electronic structure. Observations revealed that the molecular excited-state properties are derived from distinct structural symmetries.

Abstract:Abstract This contribution reports extensive studies on structure–property correlations of two isoelectronic betaine metamers (positional isomers). These zwitterions differ from each other with respect to bonding modes of pyridinium acceptors (Reichardt's mode: through N‐atom versus Brooker's mode: through C‐atom) with the p‐phenylene bridged phenolate donors. Various quantum chemical methodologies are used in this investigation, with time‐dependent (TD) and coupled perturbed (CPHF) theories for computations of many molecular response properties. Analysis of first hyperpolarizabilities ( β ) indicates that Reichardt's metamer (ωB97xD: β = 349.5 × 10 −30 esu) is more efficient chromophore (~5‐fold enhanced) than Brooker's metamer (ωB97xD: β = 69.4 × 10 −30 esu). The gyratory abilities of the bridge junctions resulted in a cohort of metastable conformations, in the rotational potential energy surfaces (PES) of the two metamers. Moreover, rotational PES establishes that intermediary torsions are suitable for optimal chromophore design strategies (Reichardt's metamer: β = 956.5 × 10 −30 esu, and Brooker's metamer: β = 1104.7 × 10 −30 esu), Thus suitable conformational manipulations, can be used to obtain more efficient zwitterionic molecular chromophores. Compared unbridged prototype molecules, p ‐phenylene bridged zwitterions showed ~6–9 times enhanced values of β . In addition, important aspects of suitable chromophore design strategies are suggested.

Abstract:This paper presents dipole moment (μ), static mean polarizability (α) and mean first hyperpolarizability (β) of thiophene-substituted stilbene derivatives calculated in the framework of density functional theory. The calculations were performed using a finite field approach implemented in the density functional program allchem. All-electron type basis sets optimized for the calculation of the polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities using a local exchange-correlation functional were employed. The molecular structures have been fully optimized using the semiempirical program MSINDO. The calculated mean first hyperpolarizability trends are in agreement with the experimental trends obtained from hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique. This work shows that the increased of hyperpolarizability of the studied thiophene-substituted stilbene derivatives is due to a geometrical effect of their trans and cis isomers.

Abstract:Using the results of the three different methods: ab initio HF, MP2 and DFT, the second hyperpolarizabilities of pyrrole homologues were calculated by self-compiling program according to sum-over-state formulae. The calculated results show that as heteroatom atomic number increased, the second hyperpolarizability increased subsequently. Starting from the symmetry, the reasons for the increasing nonlinearity were given by the two-state mold. From the linear relationship of the third nonlinear optical properties between the heteroatom group and the pyrrole homologues, the third nonlinear optical properties were largely determined by the heteroatom. Compared with the optical Kerr effect of the furan homologues, pyrrole homologues are good nonlinear optical materials in application prospect.

Abstract:Hole transport materials (HTMs) with high hole mobility, good band alignment and ease of fabrication are highly desirable for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we designed and synthesized novel organic HTMs, named T3, which can be synthesized in high yields with commercially available materials, featuring a substituted pyrrole core and triphenylamine peripheral arms. The capability of functionalization in the final synthetic step provides an efficient way to obtain a variety of T3-based HTMs with tunable energy levels and other properties. Among them, fluorine-substituted T3 (T3-F) exhibits the best band alignment and hole extraction properties, leading to PSCs with outstanding PCEs of 24.85 % and 24.03 % (certified 23.46 %) for aperture areas of 0.1 and 1 cm(2), respectively. The simple structure and tunable performance of T3 can inspire further optimization for efficient PSCs.

Abstract:Multiple theoretical investigations on three new series of donor-bridge-acceptor substituted compounds are employed to aid in the design of NLO-phores with high first-hyperpolarizability beta. The effect of varying the acceptor (rhodanine, thiohydantoin and thiobarbituric acid derivative-based) and bridge parts of these D-pi-A systems was analyzed in terms of geometric and optoelectronic parameters such as bond length alternation, ground state dipole moments, HOMO and LUMO energies, UV-vis absorption spectra, transition dipole moments, and electronic absorption energies. Various functionals with the AUG-cc-pVDZ basis set including B3LYP, PBE38, and omega B97XD, and the Hartree-Fock method were employed to calculate beta values, and the solvent effect was also considered by employing the SMD model. The variation of first-hyperpolarizabilities has been explained satisfactorily in terms of the PBE38/AUG-cc-pVDZ level calculated spectroscopic properties in the light of the sum-over-states method and the two-level model. The comprehensive study indicates that the most worthwhile targets for development as NLO-phores are compounds that include a longer pi-bridge.
Interlayer charge-transfer in impacting the second hyperpolarizabilities: radical and cation species of hexathiophenalenylium and its nitro dimers

Abstract:Hexathiophenalenylium (HTPLY) has gained increasing attention for its interesting and potentially useful optical properties as a result of the enhancement in spin delocalization and charge-transfer of phenalenyl radicals, occasioned by the attachment of successive three disulfide linkages. Herein, we performed density functional theory to calculate the binding interactions, electronic absorption spectra and the second hyperpolarizabilities of cation and radical dimers of HTPLY and its nitro derivatives. It is found that the equilibrium structures of the π dimers at fully staggered position are most stable. Among these π dimers, radical dimers exhibit stronger binding interactions with respect to cation dimers. In addition, obvious red shifts in electronic spectra of radical dimers are dependent on the large interlayer charge-transfers. More importantly, radical dimers [4]dim3 and [5]dim1 exhibit a significant increase in the second hyperpolarizabilities as compared to cation dimers, which is due to lower excitation energies and larger interlayer charge-transfers. We believe that the results presented in this article shall provide important evidence for the large interlayer charge-transfers in enhancing the NLO properties of the π dimers.
Molecular Design for Octupolar Nonlinear Optical Systems: an Ab Initio Study of First Hyperpolarizabilities of Symmetrically Heteroaromatic-Substituted Triazines

Abstract:An ab initio coupled perturbed Hartree-Fock study has been performed to investigate the hyperpolarizabilities beta of a series of heteroaromatic-substituted sym-triazines in the frame of a tensorial formalism. Effects of donor or acceptor substitution and electron correlation on the octupolar triazines have also been explored. Geometric effects have been considered in a set of calculations by using fully optimized and planar structures. It is found that the effects of the deviations from the planarity on beta are very small. Octupolar triazines containing pyrrole. derivatives have larger beta than the corresponding analogues containing furan and thiophene. derivatives, and NO2 or NH2 substitution strongly affects beta of octupolar benzene-substituted triazine. An additive model is introduced to evidence specific contributions to beta arising from the multipolar symmetry. The beta tensor of a multipolar system is dissected into two separate tensor representation, an additive term beta (A) representing the tensorial sum of the dipole units' beta and a term beta (I) representing interactions between the dipole units constituting the multipole. The results indicate that when the acceptor groups (NO2) are introduced into octupolar triazines containing pyrrole and furan derivatives, the effects of the interaction term exceed that of the additive term and greatly enhance the magnitudes of beta, contrasted with unsubstitution. It is also seen that incorporating the donor groups (NH2) into the octupolar molecules not only significantly enhances beta (A) but also beta (I), compared with unsubstitution and NO2 substitution. The electron correlation has a large influence on the magnitude of the hyperpolarizabilities.
Assessment of range-separated exchange functionals and nonempirical functional tuning for calculating the static second hyperpolarizabilities of streptocyanines.

Abstract:DFT method can severely overestimate the response properties for p-conjugation systems. The range-separated exchange and recently developed optimal IP-tuning process are evaluated on the prediction of static second hyperpolarizabilities of streptocyanines of increasing molecular length. The finite field results have shown that the exact exchange at midium and long distance can relieve only a part of the overshooting but still beyond satisfaction. The exact exchange at short distance has the oppsite effects showing the failure of converntional hGGA. The optimal tuned range-separated exchange functionals show little improvements performing worse than the default ones. Importantly, the electronic structure-property relationship, bond order alternation-c, is not well established with DFT method. (C) 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Optoelectronic properties of organic molecules are underpinned by delocalisation and delocalisability of π‐electrons. These properties are sensitive to small changes in electron count, whether achieved by heteroatom substitution or redox chemistry. One measure of the delocalisability of π‐electrons is the current induced by an external magnetic field, which is diagnostic of (anti)aromaticity. The ab initio ipsocentric method is used here to model diverse ring‐current patterns in the family of [8]‐circulenes based on tetracyclopenta[def,jkl,pqr,vwx]tetraphenylene (TCPTP), in different charge states, with disjoint hetero‐atom substitution, and with CC units systematically replaced by BN pairs. Maps calculated at the CHF/CTOCD‐DZ2/6‐ 31G** level reveal that these modifications of the TCPTP framework access the full range of possibilities for current from concentric global circulations (typically counter rotating) to full (non‐aromatic) localisation. In the ipsocentric approach, induced current density is partitioned into robust orbital contributions that obey selection rules based on orbital symmetry, energy and nodal character. The selection rules are applied here to interpret current‐density and exploit insights gained from simpler models to suggest design strategies for fine‐tuning of π‐delocalisability (aromaticity and anti‐aromaticity) in macrocyclic frameworks.

The Effects of Exact Exchange of Density Functionals on the Evaluation of Second Hyperpolarizabilities of Streptocyanines Using Sum-Over-States Method

Abstract:TDDFT calculations are used to discuss the effects of the exact exchange (Ex) on the evaluation of second hyperpolarizabilities (gamma(yyyy)) of streptocyanines (3-9 carbons). The results confirm that TDDFT calculations are reliable on the reproduction of the first excitation energies (41) compared with experiments (within 0.3 eV deviations). The sum-over-states (SOS) calculations based on TDDFT suggest that the percentages of Ex determines the gamma(yyyy). The nonlinear optical (NLO) active region of streptocyanines is the pi-bridge conjugation where the bond length is between 2 and 3 au. Within this area, the higher the percentage of Ex is, the lower the gamma(yyyy) is (gamma(yyyy) is normally negative for streptocyanines). The gamma(yyyy) can be decomposed into T and N contributions according to the three-level SOS method. The decomposition shows that the T term significantly decreases with the increasing percentages of Ex, while N term gradually increases. Therefore, hybrid generalized gradient approximation (hGGA), hybrid meta-generalized gradient approximation (hybrid meta-GGA) and long-range corrected (LRC) functionals tend to overestimate gamma(yyyy). The functional tuning process can improve the results due to the decreasing of omega. This means the deviation of gamma(yyyy) do NOT corresponds to the delocalization error (DE). Consequently, the pure GGA, pure meta-GGA, and LRC with small to can give qualitative correct results. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Enhanced molecular first hyperpolarizabilities with Reichardt's type of zwitterions: a computational study on roles of various monocyclic aromatic bridges

Abstract:Context: This work reports structure-property correlations of 27 zwitterions Reichardt's types of zwitterions. Focuses are twofold, to see the (1) impacts of metamerism with Reichardt's vs Brooker's types of zwitterions and (2) impacts of monocyclic aromatic rings as bridges. All the molecules considered here have pyridinium (common acceptor: A) and p-phenylene-dicyanomethanide (common donor: D). Fundamental molecular properties like dipole moments (μ), polarizabilities (α), hyperpolarizabilities (β), and adiabatic absorptions were computed only for the Reichardt types and compared with the literature reported respective Brooker's types of zwitterions. As an impact of metamerism, in general 2-3 times enhanced hyperpolarizabilities (β) were observed for Reichardt's compared to Brooker's types. Exceptions were observed with some triazine bridges and furan bridge, where Brooker's types were found to be more efficient. As impacts of aromatic bridges, in general, 6-sevenfold enhanced β compared to well-known traditional bridges and enhanced β were observed compared to D-A directly connected zwitterion (benzene bridge: sixfold enhanced β). Current findings show that the aromatic bridge control with Reichardt's types of zwitterions is more efficient and thus may be employed as an effective strategy for the designing of functional molecular chromophores for various other fundamental areas. Methods: All computations were performed with Gaussian 09. Geometry optimizations and computations of fundamental properties were carried out with HF, B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, and ωB97xD methodologies, with 6-31G(d,p) and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets. For adiabatic excitations, computations were carried out using TDDFT and TDHF approaches. For the computations of the response properties (like the nonlinear optical responses), CPHF approach was used.
Tuning the Electronic Transport Anisotropy in Α -Phase Phosphorene Through Superlattice Design

Abstract:Rational tuning the anisotropic electronic properties of monolayer phosphorene is essential to their applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices. By combining the density functional theory and the nonequilibrium Green's function method, we developed a strategy to tune the anisotropic transport properties of phosphorene by designing stable arsenic-phosphorene(AsxP1-x) superlattice (SL). It was found that, with a careful design of As:P ratio and atomic arrangement, the anisotropic transport properties could be tuned in a wide range. The transport current along the zigzag direction, which is very low in pristine phosphorene, was gradually enhanced by increasing the As:P ratio, and even became larger than that along armchair direction when the As:P ratio achieved 1:1 under a given arrangement of As atoms in AsxP1-xSL. The tunable anisotropic transport properties of AsxP1-xSL are attributed to the interplay between the different scattering rates related to the number and orientation of As-P interfaces. This finding demonstrates that the AsxP1-xSL design could be an effective approach to tune the anisotropic electronic properties of monolayer phosphorene, which is important for the development of high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices based on phosphorene.
Am1/Ci Study of the First-Order Hyperpolarizability for Push-Pull Quinones and Push-Pull Polyenes. A Two-Level Model Evaluation

Abstract:A set of quinone derivatives with different donor and acceptor groups is obtained. The first-order hyperpolarizabilities (beta) are determined by using the two-level model at the level of AM1/CI. The transition moment (mu(ge)), the dipole moment difference (Delta mu) between the ground and excited states and the maximum absorption wavelength (lambda(max)) are calculated. The influence of the strength of the donor-acceptor pairs upon these crucial two-level parameters is investigated with respect to the electronic features. The relationship between these parameters and the first-order hyperpolarizability is discussed. For comparison, the results for push-pull hexatriene, another pi-conjugated system, are also discussed.

Abstract:Metal complexes with excellent nonlinear optical (NLO) properties have attracted considerable attention. The geometry structure, electronic spectra and NLO properties of 2,2.-bidipyrrins (L) and mono-and bimetal Ir(I)/Rh(I)-L complexes have been investigated by density functional theory method. Our calculations revealed that L with planar configuration shows the largest first hyperpolarizability value, which is 2.2 to 5.5 times larger than that of others. It is attributed to the single direction of intramolecular charge transfer. When metal ions were embedded in ligands, the first hyperpolarizability values of mono-and bimetal Ir/Rh(I)-L complexes were smaller than that of L, and that of bimetal Ir/Rh(I)-L complexes were smaller than the corresponding monometallic Ir/Rh(I)-L. This is caused by the intramolecular charge transfer from multiple directions as well as the amount of charge transfer. On the other hand, on increasing the number of metal ions, the charge transfer in the opposite direction cancels each other more obviously. Our work would provide some theoretical reference for the second-order NLO responses of mono-and bimetal complexes.

Abstract:In this paper, we further study on the relation between the first hyperpolarizability and molecular configuration based on the three-coupled-oscillator model proposed by us. The model is suitable for chiral molecules with the tripod-like structure. We numerically simulate the spectra of first hyperpolarizabilities, and investigate the effects of molecular chiral parameters and coupling coefficients on the hyperpolarizabilities. As an example, we show a calculation of the first-hyperpolarizability spectra for NPAN molecules, which accord well with the experimental result obtained by Barzoukas et al. [M. Barzoukas, D. Josse, P. Fremaux, J. Zyss, J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 4 (1987) 977–986].

Abstract:The efficiency of photovoltaic solar cells (PSCs) heavily relies on hole-transport materials (HTMs). Understanding the intricate relationship between structure and properties is pivotal in crafting effective HTMs. In this study a set of 4 new organic molecules were strategically crafted using different core and π-linkers to analyze their role as potential novel HTMs. We delve into understanding and investigate how their structures influence the electronic, optical, and hole-transport properties of designed HTMs using DFT and TDDFT methodology. The efficacy of the newly designed molecules is assessed across multiple dimensions, encompassing frontier molecular orbitals, absorption spectra, hole mobility, electrostatic potential (ESP), transition density matrix, density of states, reorganization energy (RE), binding energy (BE), dipole moment stability etc., providing a comprehensive evaluation of their performance. The calculated properties are further compared with well known HTM spiro-OMeTAD. Results indicate that three out of the four analyzed compounds can serve as preferential HTM candidate for PSC device as a consequence of narrow band gap, small excitation energy, low RE of hole, good stability and low binding energy. Our ESP results suggest that achieving planarity between the core and the linking phenyl group within the triphenylamine moiety is crucial for enhancing charge transport efficiency and elevating the optical and electronic characteristics of the investigated HTMs. This study provides crucial insights for the deliberate and effective design of high-performance HTMs.
