Abstract:A normative ‘nitrogen removal process’ was established through partial nitrification coupled with ammox-like process of the ferric tannate (TA-Fe). Compared with traditional ammoxidation process, TA-Fe used here was more available in practice, there is no need to deliberately adjust the process parameters to meet the growth of functional microorganisms, which made NH4 +-N remove effectively and economically in a single reactor. Results indicated that the removal efficiency of NH4 +-N reached 80% after adding TA-Fe. In the meantime, the NO2 --N and NO3 --N accumulation rate declined sharply to 2.33% and zero. Both Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 existed in TA-Fe. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra revealed Fe(III) and Fe(II) existed on the surface of TA-Fe. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that TA-Fe had appreciable effect on microbial diversity in the biofilm reactor. Furthermore, the material species analysis further indicated that the relative abundance of the Anammox related bacteria (Candidatus Brocadia fulgida) up to 96.7% implied that the improvement of nitrogen removal was due to synergistic effect of TA-Fe and biological denitrification. Results of this project will provide scientific basis for the development of new theory of nitrogen removal from wastewater.
