Abstract:Conventional optical microscopes are only able to resolve objects down to a size of approximately 200 nm due to optical diffraction limits. The rapid development of nanotechnology has increased the demand for greater imaging resolution, with a need to break through those diffraction limits. Among super-resolution techniques, microsphere imaging has emerged as a strong contender, offering low cost, simple operation, and high resolution, especially in the fields of nanodevices, biomedicine, and semiconductors. However, this technology is still in its infancy, with an inadequate understanding of the underlying principles and the technology's limited field of view. This paper comprehensively summarizes the status of current research, the advantages and disadvantages of the basic principles and methods of microsphere imaging, the materials and preparation processes, microsphere manipulation methods, and applications. The paper also summarizes future development trends.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the research progress and application potential of microsphere super-resolution imaging technology. The paper aims to address the issue that traditional optical microscopes cannot achieve higher resolution due to the diffraction limit of light. Specifically, the objectives of the paper can be summarized as follows: 1. **Breaking the Diffraction Limit**: Traditional optical microscopes are limited by the diffraction limit of light, with a resolution typically not exceeding about 200 nanometers. With the rapid development of nanotechnology, the demand for higher resolution is increasing. Therefore, the paper aims to explore how to break this limit through microsphere super-resolution imaging technology. 2. **Evaluating the Advantages and Limitations of Microsphere Super-Resolution Imaging Technology**: As an emerging super-resolution technology, microsphere imaging has the characteristics of low cost, simple operation, and high resolution, showing great potential in fields such as nanodevices, biomedicine, and semiconductors. However, this technology is still in its early stages, with insufficient understanding of its principles and issues such as limited field of view. Therefore, the paper also aims to comprehensively summarize the current research status and analyze the basic principles, methods, material preparation processes, microsphere manipulation methods, and application fields of this technology. 3. **Promoting Technological Progress and Application**: To overcome the limitations of existing technologies, such as setup constraints, sample preparation complexity, wavefront distortion, and manufacturing and cost constraints, the paper also discusses future development trends and directions for technological improvement. In summary, the main purpose of this review paper is to comprehensively review the current status and development of microsphere super-resolution imaging technology, with the aim of promoting further research and application in multiple fields.
