Abstract:Dual-metal nanoparticles were simultaneously embedded into amorphous carbon (a-C) matrix at room temperature. As-deposited Au/a-C/Fe sandwich composite multilayer films were fabricated by alternating multitarget pulsed laser deposition. More sp(2) carbon content, narrower Tauc optical gap and stronger photoluminescence intensity of the amorphous carbon films were observed after metal-embedding. Especially for Au/a-C/Fe sandwich films, the fullerene-like microstructure demonstrated that the dual-metal embedding modulated greatly the intrinsic structure and properties of the a-C films. These results were attributed primarily to the extended state around the metal deep level in the band gap and the narrowing of the pi and pi* band edge states. The metal deep level defects contributed chiefly to non-radiative recombination. (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Centimeter-sized segregated stacking TTF-C60 single crystals are crystallized by a mass-transport approach combined with solvent-vapor evaporation for the first time. The intermolecular charge-transfer interaction in the long-range ordered superstructure enables the crystals to demonstrate external stimuli-controlled multifunctionalities and angle/electrical-potential-dependent luminescence.

Abstract:AbstractFullerene‐based liquid crystalline materials have both the excellent optical and electrical properties of fullerene and the self‐organization and external‐field‐responsive properties of liquid crystals (LCs). Herein, we demonstrate a new family of thermotropic [60]fullerene supramolecular LCs with hierarchical structures. The [60]fullerene dyads undergo self‐organization driven by π–π interactions to form triple‐layer two‐dimensional (2D) fullerene crystals sandwiched between layers of alkyl chains. The lamellar packing of 2D crystals gives rise to the formation of supramolecular LCs. This design strategy should be applicable to other molecules and lead to an enlarged family of 2D crystals and supramolecular liquid crystals.

Abstract:New carbon forms that exhibit extraordinary physicochemical properties can be generated from nanostructured precursors under extreme pressure. Nevertheless, synthesis of such fascinating materials is often not well understood. That is the case of the C-60 precursor, with irreproducible results that impede further progress in the materials design. Here, the semiconducting amorphous carbon, having band gaps of 0.1-0.3 eV and the advantages of isotropic super hardness and superior toughness over single-crystal diamond and inorganic glasses, is produced from fullerene at high pressure and moderate temperatures. A systematic investigation of the structure and bonding evolution is carried out with complementary characterization methods, which helps to build a model of the transformation that can be used in further high-pressure/high-temperature (high p,T) synthesis of novel nano-carbon systems for advanced applications. The amorphous carbon materials produced have the potential of accomplishing the demanding optoelectronic applications that diamond and graphene cannot achieve.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:The total synthesis of carbon onions is a significant challenge in the fields of materials science and organic chemistry. To date, the synthesis of even a fragment of fullerene C240 and its smallest carbon onion C60@C240 remains poorly explored. Herein, we demonstrate a bottom-up strategy to produce a novel π-extended molecular crown-shaped molecule (MC3) containing curved pentagonal and hexagonal units. This molecular crown represents a curved model compound for fullerene C240 and is fully characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry, UV-vis absorption, and from its emission spectra. Its supramolecular host–guest interaction with fullerene C60 is also investigated. MC3 and C60@MC3 can potentially be employed as seeds or templates for the bottom-up synthesis of fullerene C240 and the carbon onion C60@C240, respectively.

Abstract:Fullerene hierarchical mesocrystals were first prepared by antisolvent induced precipitation method. Their morphologies and sizes can be controlled by adjusting the antisolvent type and the ratio between the solvent (toluene) and antisolvent (ethyl acetate or tetrahydrofuran). The formation of fullerene mesocrystals and their transformation to single crystal were observed by time-dependent experiments with SEM and TEM. Fullerene mesocrystals can be separated from the solution and are stable for several months. HRTEM revealed that mesocrystals were made up of highly oriented nanoparticles. The formation of fullerene mesocrystals and their transformation to single crystals provide a new way for the construction of fullerene nanostructures with different applications.

Abstract:Functionalized fullerene nanostructures are a distinct class of materials that exhibit the combined properties of both fullerene and nanostructures including excellent optoelectronic features, modified band edges, high electron affinity, fast charge transfer capabilities, and tunable structural and textural properties. These fascinating properties allow for their utilization in many applications such as polymer solar cells, photovoltaics, photocatalysis, photodynamic therapy, electrocatalysis, environmental remediation, and drug and gene delivery. Numerous synthesis methods and anchoring groups are employed for functionalized fullerenes with nanostructures by using convergent bottom‐up and top‐down strategies. The supramolecular self‐assembly and functionalization of fullerenes through robust chemistry approaches such as surface oxidation, grafting, polymer coating, doping of metals/nonmetal heteroatoms, noncovalent modification with 2D materials and nanoparticle attachment result in achieving fine control over its surface and bulk properties, including increased solubility, wettability, electron transport, acid–base properties, adsorption, electronic conductivity, and light absorption. This review analyzes the salient developments in the fabrication of nanostructured fullerenes and their functionalized derivatives for many applications including adsorption, catalysis, sensors, energy storage, solar cells, drug delivery, magnetic and superconducting devices. The contents of this review will allow the readers to cherish exciting possibilities and opportunities in field of functionalized nanofullerenes. The design strategies and preparation methods including predesigned and postsynthetic strategies for the construction of fullerene‐based nanoarchitectures with diverse morphologies, architectures, and dimensionalities are presented. Their performance in high‐throughput applications with an in‐depth understanding of the structure–property relationships is provided along with future challenges.

Abstract:Supramolecular arrangement of conjugated molecules has crucial influence on their material properties. For fullerenes and metallofullerenes, tight and ordered packing is beneficial for intermolecular charge transport and energy transfer, but it is tricky to achieve, especially for functionalized cages due to the often extensive solvation and steric effects of functional groups. In this study, we use an amphiphilic fullerene derivative soluble in methanol to form co-assemblies with insoluble fullerene derivatives, pristine fullerene, and metallofullerene via strong π-π interactions. These mixtures are processable in methanol and show fullerene-templated crystalline structures in spin-cast films. Devices are successfully fabricated on a field-effect transistor platform with this approach, and all co-assemblies show metallic-like conductive properties with significantly enhanced conductivity compared to the pure amphiphilic fullerene derivative.

Abstract:Correlating nanoscale building blocks with mesoscale superlattices, mimicking metal alloys, a rational engineering strategy becomes critical to generate designed periodicity with emergent properties. For molecule-based superlattices, nevertheless, nonrigid molecular features and multistep self-assembly make the molecule-to-superlattice correlation less straightforward. In addition, single component systems possess intrinsically limited volume asymmetry of self-assembled spherical motifs (also known as "mesoatoms"), further hampering novel superlattices' emergence. In the current work, we demonstrate that properly designed molecular systems could generate a spectrum of unconventional superlattices. Four categories of giant molecules are presented. We systematically explore the lattice-forming principles in unary and binary systems, unveiling how molecular stoichiometry, topology, and size differences impact the mesoatoms and further toward their superlattices. The presence of novel superlattices helps to correlate with Frank-Kasper phases previously discovered in soft matter. We envision the present work offers new insights about how complex superlattices could be rationally fabricated by scalable-preparation and easy-to-process materials.

Supercrystal Engineering of Nanoarrows Enabled by Tailored Concavity

Abstract:Self-assembly of nanoparticles into supercrystals represents a powerful approach to create unique and complex superstructures with fascinating properties and novel functions, but the complexity in spatial configuration, and the tunability in lattice structure are still quite limited compared to the crystals formed by atoms and molecules. Herein, shallowly concave gold nanoarrows with a unique concave-convex geometry are synthesized and employed as novel building blocks for shape-directed self-assembly of a wealth of complex 3D supercrystals with unprecedented configurations. The obtained diverse superstructures including six Interlocking-type supercrystals and three Packing-type supercrystals exhibit four types of Bravais lattices (i.e., tP, oI, tI, and oF) and six types of crystallographic space groups (i.e., Pmmm, I222, Pnnm, Ibam, I4/mmm, and Fmmm), which have not been documented in the mesoscale self-assembled systems. It has been revealed that the relative yield of different supercrystal structures is mainly determined by the packing density and deformability of the supercrystals, which are closely related to the tailored concavity of the nanoparticles and is affected by the particle concentration, thus allowing for programmable self-assembly into specific supercrystals through particle shape modulation. The concavity-enabled supercrystal engineering may open a new avenue toward unconventional nanoparticle superstructures with expanded complexity, tunability, and functionality. Shallowly concave gold nanoarrows with a delicately controlled concave-convex geometry are synthesized and employed as unique building blocks for shape-directed self-assembly of a wealth of unprecedented, complex supercrystals. Abstract:Host‐guest chemistry, a pivotal branch of supramolecular chemistry, plays an essential role in understanding and constructing complex structures through non‐covalent interactions. Organic molecular cages, characterized by their intrinsic confined cavities, can selectively bind a variety of guest molecules. Their host‐guest chemistry has been well studied in the solution phase, and several attempts have been made to encode well‐defined molecular architectures into solid‐state polymeric materials. However, only limited studies have explored their potential in the solid state, where their lack of robustness and less ordered networks significantly hinder practical applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of a single‐crystal cage framework and a systematic study of its host‐guest chemistry, spanning from the solution state to the solid state. Our studies reveal that the host‐guest interactions inherent to the cage are successfully maintained in the solid‐state polymeric material. Furthermore, the framework's robustness allows for the guest molecules (fullerene) to be released triggered by an organic acid (trifluoracetic acid), with subsequent regeneration of the framework through an organic base (triethylamine) treatment. Our findings represent the first synthesis of a robust, single‐crystal cage framework exhibiting highly selective and reversible host‐guest chemistry, thus showing great potential towards molecular separation application.

Abstract:The installation of three structural features into a fullerene molecule, a conical shape, a polar iron-ferrocene complex, and long alkyl chains, allowed dipolar molecules 1 and 2 to undergo microphase separation and to form a three-dimensional lattice in a crystalline and a thermotropic liquid crystalline phase. The key feature is a tetrameric octupole-like aggregate, in which four dipoles are arranged supramolecularly to cancel the molecular polarity, forming a sphere. In addition to this lattice formation mechanism, the molecules incorporate noteworthy features, such as redox active C(60)/ferrocene and luminescent cyclophenacene.

Abstract:Owning a highly symmetric geometry, fullerenes are popular building blocks in nanoarchitectonics. The successful preparation of fullerene superstructures with various sizes and dimensions forms the basis for their applications. However, the lack of porosity and the limited electrical conductivity of most fullerene superstructures prevent their applications in energy-related fields such as supercapacitors. Herein, hybrid crystals with a crossed-tubular morphology and a hexagonal close packed (hcp) lattice were constructed by fullerene C60 and its derivative, [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), through a modified liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation method. Subsequent calcination can greatly improve the porosity of this hybrid crystals and produce mesoporous carbon with an increased BET surface area nearly 30 times (from 13.91 to 432.41 m2 g−1), which exhibited a good performance as an electrode material in supercapacitor with a capacitance retention rate of 87.3% after 2000 cycles and specific capacitances of ∼213 F g−1 at 5 mV s−1 and ∼158 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, respectively. Compared to the crystals formed solely by fullerenes, the presence of PCBM lowered the calcination temperature and induced self-doping of oxygen. In addition, rough surfaces could be produced on the superstructures by solvent etching, which increased as well the performance of the material in supercapacitor. Our work provided a new strategy to engineer fullerene-derived functional materials for applications in energy storage and expanded the knowledge on the factors regulating their performance when using as electrode materials in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Two molecular Janus particles based on amphiphilic [60]fullerene (C60 ) derivatives were designed and synthesized by using the regioselective Bingel-Hirsh reaction and the click reaction. These particles contain carboxylic acid functional groups, a hydrophilic fullerene (AC60 ), and a hydrophobic C60 in different ratios and have distinct molecular architectures: 1:1 (AC60 -C60 ) and 1:2 (AC60 -2C60 ). These molecular Janus particles can self-assemble in solution to form aggregates with various types of micellar morphology. Whereas vesicular morphology was observed for both AC60 -C60 and AC60 -2C60 in tetrahydrofuran, in a mixture of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF)/water, spherical micelles and cylindrical micelles were observed for AC60 -C60 and AC60 -2C60 , respectively. A mechanism of formation was tentatively proposed based on the effects of molecular architecture and solvent polarity on self-assembly.

In this article, we highlight the recent advances in applying the breath figure (BF) method-a traditional technique to prepare patterned porous polymer films-to nanocrystal self-assembly. This new combined strategy leads to hierarchically ordered structures from nanocrystal superlattices to micrometer patterns, showing appealing prospects in various fields.

Abstract:Well-defined and controllable one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures of fullerene derivative have been prepared by an electrophoretic template synthesis method. The clusters of fullerene derivative formed in mixed solvents are introduced into the channels of porous alumina templates through a dc electric field. Four types of 1D nanostructures (solid nanowires, solid-wall nanotubes, porous nanowires and porous-wall nanotubes) have been obtained by changing the deposition parameters. This approach opens a new avenue to assemble fullerene derivatives, endohedral fullerenes, as well as other functional organic compounds, which can form clusters in 1D nanostructure arrays for applications in chemical sensors, light energy conversion devices and nanoscale electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Metallo‐supramolecular cages have garnered tremendous attention for their diverse yet molecular‐level precision structures. However, physical properties of these supramolecular ensembles, which are of potential significance in molecular electronics, remain largely unexplored. We herein constructed a series of octahedral metallo‐cages and cage‐fullerene complexes with notably enhanced structural stability. As such, we could systematically evaluate the electrical conductivity of these ensembles at both single‐molecule level and aggregated bulk state (as well‐defined films). Our findings reveal that counteranions and fullerene guests play a pivotal role in determining the electrical conductivity of aggregated state, while such effects are less significant for single‐molecule conductance. Both counteranions and fullerenes effectively tune the electronic structures and packing density of metallo‐supramolecular assemblies, and facilitate efficient charge transfer between the cage hosts and fullerenes, resulting in a notable one order of magnitude increase in electrical conductivity of the aggregated state.

Abstract:Understanding how chemical modifications alter the atomic‐scale organization of materials is of fundamental importance in materials engineering and the target of considerable efforts in computational prediction. Incorporating covalent and noncovalent interactions in designing crystals while “piggybacking” on the driving force of molecular self‐assembly has augmented efforts to understand the emergence of complex structures using directed synthesis. In this work, microcrystalline powders of the silver 2‐, 3‐, and 4‐fluorobenzenethiolates are prepared and their structures are resolved by small‐molecule serial femtosecond X‐ray crystallography. These three compounds enable the emergence and role of supramolecular synthons in the crystal structures of 3D metal‐organic chalcogenolates to be examined. The unique divergence in their optoelectronic, morphological, and structural behaviors is assessed. The extent of CHF interactions and their influence on the structure and the observed trends in the thermal stability of the crystals are quantified through theoretical calculations and thermogravimetric analysis.
