Abstract:Lithium metal is taken for the "Holy Grail" of anode materials for high energy density batteries. However, irregular lithium dendrite formation during cycling and unrestricted volume expansion of the anode prevents its practical application. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) lithiophilic zinc (Zn) micrometer sheet arrays are grown in situ on copper foils as the framework for lithium deposition by a simple one-step electrochemical deposition method. 3D arrays can reduce the local current density and mitigate the volume expansion of lithium metal. The introduction of Zn improves the lithiophilicity of the current collector to reduce the nucleation potential of lithium. Meanwhile, the LiZn alloy formed in situ during the electrochemical reaction can homogenize the Li + concentration, which is beneficial to improving the Li + migration kinetics. Therefore, the electrochemical performance test results showed that the half-cell achieved stable coulombic efficiency (CE). The symmetric cell has superior cycle life of over 950 h at 1 mA cm −2 and an average polarization voltage of 11 mV. In addition, the full cell possesses outstanding rate performance and 90% capacity retention at 1 C after 100 cycles. 3D lithiophilic arrays prepared by the electrochemical deposition method provide a simple new strategy for the development of stable lithium metal batteries (LMBs).
