Abstract:The effects of ionic liquids on physicochemical structure and oxidation characteristic of coal were studied.N2 adsorption and FTIR analyses showed the changes of pore structure and functional groups of the coal treated with ionic liquids.The thermogravimetric kinetics of the raw coal and treated coal with ionic liquids were investigated comparatively.Ionic liquid delayed the oxidation process of coal.Ionic liquids (ILs) including [BMIm][NTf2], [BMIm][BF4] and [HOEtMIm][NTf2] were used to inhibit coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) in this study. The effects of three Ionic liquids (ILs) on the physical and chemical structure of coal including surface morphology, pore structure and functional groups were analyzed by Scanning electron microscope, N2 adsorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Subsequently, thermodynamic analysis and oxidation kinetics experiment were utilized to investigate the influence of ILs on the oxidation process. Pore structure analyses indicated that ILs could dissolve the minerals in coal, causing the collapse and blocking of pore structure and resulting in lower specific surface area and pore volume of the treated coals by ILs compared to the raw coal (RC). FTIR results showed the enhanced apparent aromaticity and more stable chemical structure of the treated coals, and this increased the difficult of chemical functional group on the coal surface reacting with oxygen. The thermodynamic and oxidation kinetics experiments revealed that ILs delayed the oxidation process of the treated coals obviously, and the treated coals demonstrated less mass loss ratio and oxygen consumption, as well as lower heat release and carbon monoxide products than the RC. Moreover, [HOEtMIm][NTf2] showed the best inhibition effect on coal spontaneous combustion as verified by minimum heat release and highest activation energy Ea for the treated coal sample.

Abstract:Different water-soluble sodium compounds (NaCl, Na2CO3, and NaOH) were used to treat Shengli lignite, and the resulting effects on the microstructure and combustion performance of the coal were investigated. The results showed that Na2CO3 and NaOH had a significant impact on combustion performance of lignite, while NaCl did not. The Na2CO3-treated lignite showed two distinct weight-loss temperature regions, and after NaOH treatment, the main combustion peak of the sample moved to the high temperature. This indicates that both Na2CO3 and NaOH can inhibit the combustion of lignite, with the latter showing a greater effect. The FT-IR/XPS results revealed that Na+ interacted with the oxygen-containing functional groups in lignite to form a "–COONa" structure during the Na2CO3 and NaOH treatments. It is deduced that the inhibitory effect on combustion of lignite may be attributed to the stability of the "–COONa" structure, and the relative amount is directly correlated with the inhibitory effect. The XRD/Raman analysis indicated that the stability of the aromatic structure containing "–COOH" increased with the number of "–COONa" structures formed. Additionally, experiments with carboxyl-containing compounds further demonstrated that the number of oxygen-containing functional groups combined with Na was the main reason for the differences in the combustion performance of treated lignite.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In this work, the formation of incipient ultrafine particulate matter (PM) from high-sodium lignite combustion, under both dry and wet oxy-fuel conditions, is intensively investigated using an optically accessible flat-flame burner. The ambient temperature was set at 1500 K, and measurements were performed along the zones with the coal residence time of 0-40 ms. We simultaneously introduced thermophoresis sampling, dilution sampling, and phase-selective laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (PS-LIES) to characterize the morphologies, components, and particle size distributions (PSDs) of ultrafine PM as well as the behaviors of Na. The results indicate that incipient particles formed in CO2-O-2 ambience are more abundant in Na and Si. The substitution of CO, may accelerate the mass loss rate of coal in the early devolatilization stage, whereas the Na-based incipient particles form around a time of,10 ms that is similar to conventional N-2-O-2 ambience. In combination with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the PSD of ultrafine particles formed under the 70% CO2-30% O-2 condition is successfully predicted by a population balance model (PBM)-based model. Finally, the effect of H2O on the ultrafine PM formation at the start of oxy-fuel char combustion is examined. The apparent increment of Si-based ultrafine particles caused by H2O addition in oxy-fuel conditions is theoretically interpreted.

Abstract:A series of carbon disulfide/acetone mixtures were used to extract organic species from Shengli lignite, a Chinese coal. Orbitrap mass spectrometry coupled with electrospray ionization was used to characterize the molecules in the extracts. Heteroatomic species, including oxygenates, nitrogenates, and sulfonates, were determined. Pure carbon disulfide or acetone had the lowest extraction for oxygenates while the mixtures increased the relative abundance of oxygenates. From the value of the double bond equivalence, the compounds with 1 oxygen contained the highest concentrations of aromatics and aliphatics, but compounds with 6 were aliphatic with a double bond equivalence of 3. For compounds containing 2 oxygens, aromatics with one ring were present at the highest concentrations in the 1:1 carbon disulfide:acetone extract. For compounds containing 3, 4, and 5 oxygens, most aromatic species were identified with double bond equivalence values between 4 and 6, showing the presence of an aromatic ring. The results indicated that the solvent mixtures enhanced the extraction of oxygenates from Shengli lignite.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are a type of environmentally friendly solvents. Several studies have proven that ILs can inhibit the spontaneous combustion of coal (SCC). In this study, a synchronous thermal analyzer was used to analyze the effects of the imidazolium-based IL [BMIM][BF4] on coal of three metamorphic grades. A coal sample exhibiting the optimal inhibiting result was selected to investigate the effect of the oxygen concentration on IL inhibition. The results revealed that the influence of IL on the mass loss process of the three metamorphic grades of coal varied considerably. High inhibition was observed in lignite. However, the IL promoted the mass loss process in 1/3 coking coal and anthracite. The IL delayed the ignition temperature of lignite by 42 °C, whereas those of 1/3 coking coal and anthracite were advanced by 10 and 8 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the initial exothermic temperature of the three treated coal samples was higher than those of the raw coal samples. Compared with the raw coal samples, the heat released per gram of lignite, 1/3 coking coal, and anthracite was reduced by 1142, 353, and 226 J, respectively. The results indicated that the IL had a prominent inhibiting effect on the exothermic properties of the three coal samples, and the inhibiting effect decreased with an increase in the metamorphic grade of coal. Moreover, the oxygen concentration did not alter the inhibition properties of the IL on the SCC. However, the inhibiting effect weakened as the oxygen concentration decreased.

Abstract:In order to characterize the effect of ionic liquid concentration on the molecular structure of lignite, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) experiments were performed on lignite coal samples treated with different concentrations of ionic liquids. The results show that with the increase of IL concentrations, the apparent aromaticity fa increases gradually. The chemical bonds on both sides of the alkyl groups are destroyed, the alkyl chains become shorter, and the molecular structure become more compact. The C-O groups such as alcohol, phenol and ether groups are converted to CO groups such as carbonyl, aldehyde and carboxy groups. The inter-layer spacing (d002) ranges from 0.374 to 0.379, which is slightly higher than that in pure graphite. It indicates that the crystalline order in coal samples is in a lower degree. The La ranges from 3.05 to 4.05 nm and Lc ranges from 0.98 to 1.11 nm, which indicates the crystallite size increases further and the order degree of coal samples gradually approaches graphitization. The results of this paper can provide some reference for studying the characteristics of molecular structure change of coal.

Abstract:Coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) is a major safety concern affecting not just miners and businesses, but of industry in China generally. Chemical methods are already widely applied in the field of CSC prevention and plays a vital role in suppressing its negative effects. Ionic liquids (ILs) are novel and environmentally friendly solvents that have shown possible inhibitory effects on CSC through controlling the reactive groups in coal's molecular structure. To study the effects of various ILs on CSC more thoroughly, this paper examined several types of IL that had been pre-treated for different periods and examined how they performed during different phases of the combustion process. A long flame coal type was selected and immersed in four ILs [BMIM][BF4], [BMIM][NO3], [BMIM][I], and [EMIM][BF4]. Immersion periods were 2 days, 3 months, and 6 months; a raw coal sample was retained as a control. LFA 457 laser-flash apparatus determined the thermophysical properties of the samples between 30 and 300 °C. The kinetic process of the samples (30–800 °C) was deduced by thermogravimetric–differential scanning calorimetry thermal at various heating rates (2, 5, 10, and 15 °C min−1), and the thermal effect parameters were obtained. Results from this paper show that immersion treatment using ILs has an inhibitory effect on CSC, and the reliability of the thermophysical parameters was verified by uncertainty analysis. The pre-treated samples characteristics and exothermic peak temperature with different degrees of hysteresis were recorded, and statistical analysis verified the conclusions from the thermal physics experiments. The pre-treated sample with the greatest lag over various stages was found, and the apparent activation energy (Ea) of its rapid oxidation stage was calculated by Flynn–Wall–Ozawa and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose methods. Meanwhile, the two kinetic methods confirm each other and come to a conclusion after joint verification. The greatest Ea found here was for a 6-month immersion coal sample using the IL [BMIM][BF4].

Abstract:Spontaneous combustion of lignite is closely related to the inherent minerals it contains, and the iron component has a remarkable influence on the combustion property of lignite. It is very important to study the influence of iron component on the combustion reaction property of lignite to reveal autoignition mechanism of lignite and reduce autoignition of lignite. In this research, FeCl 3 and Fe 2 O 3 were doped into demineralised lignite (SL + ) by impregnation to research the effects of iron salts and iron oxides on the combustion properties of lignite. Based on the above, the effects of post-treatment method of the FeCl 3 -doped coal samples, iron-salt hydrolysis products and heat-treated temperatures on the combustion property of lignite were researched, and the microstructures of the coal samples were characterised and analysed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrate that doping with FeCl 3 increases the combustion performance of lignite, thereby reducing the ignition temperature of lignite by approximately 112 °C. In contrast, doping with Fe 2 O 3 has a weaker combustion-promoting effect. XRD and XPS characterisation indicates that iron species in the coal samples doped with iron salts are highly dispersed and exhibit the FeOOH structure, whereas iron species in the coal samples doped with Fe 2 O 3 exhibit the crystal form of α-Fe 2 O 3 . Doping of lignite with FeCl 3 and its hydrolysis product β-FeOOH reduces the ignition temperature of the coal samples. Iron species in the FeCl 3 -doped coal samples after heat treatment at 300 °C-500 °C increase the combustion property of the coal samples, whereas iron species after heat treatment at 600 °C-900 °C have a much weaker or non-existent promoting effect on the combustion performance of the coal samples. The characterisation show a change in iron species in the coal samples with the rise in the heat treatment temperature. This change progresses from highly dispersed β-FeOOH below 300 °C to Fe 3 O 4 above 400 °C. Fe 3 O 4 is gradually reduced, with part of it further reduced to elementary iron at the same time as grain growth. It is believed that the gradual agglomeration of Fe 3 O 4 and the appearance of elementary iron are the main reasons for the weakening or disappearance of the promoting effect on coal combustion.

Abstract:It is wise to investigate the influence of ionic liquids (ILs) on reducing hydrophobicity and dust pollution of coal from the perspective of side chain groups. In this study, two ILs ([Emim][Cl] and [HOEmim][Cl]), were selected and applied to bituminous coal. The density functional theory results showed that [HOEmim][Cl] containing the –OH group had an energy gap of 5.2895 eV, which was lower than the 5.3873 eV of [Emim][Cl] containing only the -CH3 group. A higher chemical activity of [HOEmim][Cl] was demonstrated due to the presence of the –OH group. A molecular dynamics-based contact angle system was constructed to investigate the wetting properties of coal samples treated with different ILs at the molecular level. The simulation results indicated that, compared to untreated coal, [HOEmim][Cl] exhibited a greater ability than [Emim][Cl] to improve the wetting properties of coal. Contact angle experiments demonstrated that treatment with [Emim][Cl] and [HOEmim][Cl] resulted in a decrease in contact angle by 22.67° and 25.04°, respectively, compared to deionized water, providing validation for the accuracy of molecular simulations. Lastly, the structural changes of coal samples induced by different ILs were observed by FITR, which explained the differences in wetting effects.

Abstract:A B S T R A C TTo investigate the inhibiting effect of two ionic liquids (ILs) on coal spontaneous combustion (CSC), coal samples were treated for various durations, and thermogravimetry–differential scanning calorimetry (TG–DSC) experiments were conducted at multiple heating rates. The thermokinetic characteristics were determined using the Starink and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa methods. By controlling the treatment duration, this study discovered that the CSC-inhibiting effect of ILs containing different anions changed with treatment duration. The same variations were obtained from TG–derivative TG–DSC curves and exothermicity results, but the tendencies obtained for the different ILs were different. The duration of treatment with the different ILs was optimised in accordance with the strongest CSC-inhibiting ability, and the tendencies obtained from the analysis could be verified mutually. Finally, the obtained variations were revalidated through kinetic analysis, and the results proved that 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([BMIM][I]) treatment for 180 days had the optimal CSC-inhibiting effect.

Effects of Ionic Liquid Pretreatment on Pyrolysis Characteristics of a High-Sulfur Bituminous Coal

Abstract:Four different ionic liquids (ILs) were used to identify their extraction properties on high-sulfur bituminous coal. And the effect of ILs pretreatment on pyrolysis characteristic was investigated in a fixed-bed reactor. The imidazolium-based ILs used namely: 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bromide ([Bmim]Br), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([Bmim]HSO4), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim]BF4). All the selected ILs exhibited extraordinary extraction ability for oxygen-containing compounds, mainly furans and ethers. Among them, [Bmim]Cl got the highest extraction yields of 20.82% and performed selective extraction ability for sulfur-containing compounds with a relative content of 5.10% in light oils. Compared with pyridine pretreated coal (R-PY), the yields of CO and CO2 in pyrolysis gas showed increase trend when coal pretreated by ILs (R-ILs). The relative contents of tricyclic and larger PAHs, sulfur-containing compounds, and oxygen-containing compounds in tar from pyrolysis of [Bmim]Cl and [Bmim] Br treated coal increased significantly than R-PY tar, while phenols got decreased. High carbon number components from R-ILs tar reduced dramatically compared with R-PY tar, which was conducive to the upgrading of tar, after pretreated with ILs, the sulfur content was reduced. The crosslinks between coal macromolecules structure were destroyed after pretreated by ILs, and the pyrolysis products distribution had evident change. The oil phase yield got a substantial increase while [Bmim]Cl obtained highest oil yield of 24.89%.

Abstract:In this paper, Huolinhe lignite was selected as the lignite experimental sample, using microwave modification and ultrasonic modification separately as improvement methods. The three-dimensional molecular models of HLH before and after modification were established base on the parameters obtained by 13C NMR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). After the microwave treatment, the methylene carbon in the HLH coal sample structure mostly exists in the form of long straight chains, and after microwave and ultrasonic treatment, the -OH content of oxygen atoms in the coal sample increases, and form the CO- and the COO-. The proportion is decreasing. The models were adjusted and tested by the covalent bond concentration method and carbon chemical shift spectra calculation using Chemdraw software. A new method is proposed to study the structure and physicochemical properties of lignite modification from the molecular point of view through this study.
Experimental Study on Combustion Behaviors and Carbon Monoxide Emission Characteristics of Single Coal Pellets

Abstract:Combustion behaviors and carbon monoxide emission characteristics of four kinds of coals and their blends, which were shaped into pellets, were investigated in a drop-tube furnace with various gas flow temperature (650-850 degrees C) and oxygen concentration (10-70%). Pellets of 6mm were hung by a wire basket and the combustion process was recorded at 60 frames/s using a high-performance camera. The ignition of the bituminous pellet was found to be homogeneous but it was heterogeneous for anthracite. When the oxygen concentration was more than 50%, an obvious fragment was found for the anthracite pellet, which caused higher surface temperature compared with the predicted temperature. The instantaneous CO emission of the bituminous coal had two peaks, whereas there was only one peak for that of anthracite. The total CO emission decreased exponentially when the temperature and oxygen concentration increased, and the oxygen concentration had more influence on the reduction of CO emission. CO generation was also affected by coal type; the higher the carbon and ash component of the coal, the more CO was generated with the same conditions.

Abstract:The escalating total amount of industrial solid waste is increasingly taxing the ecological environment. Co-combustion technology is seen as a potential solution to this problem. This study investigated the interaction mechanism and carbon dioxide emissions during the co-combustion process of coal slime and biomass (lignin) using a programmed heating method. The experimental results reveal that the two sub-reaction models effectively depict the combustion process of coal slime. In the co-combustion process, the comprehensive combustion and ignition performance of the mixed fuels surpasses that of coal slime, but the stability of the combustion flame is reduced. The combustion performance of the mixed fuel is primarily influenced by two common factors. The interaction between lignin and coal slime significantly changes with the variation of mixing ratio and heating rate. The main product in the combustion process of mixed fuels is carbon dioxide. Due to the competition for oxygen among volatile matter, the emission of carbon dioxide is lower than the theoretical value. When the mass percentage of lignin is 70 %, the impact on carbon dioxide is most pronounced. The experimental results of this study provide a foundation for understanding the interaction mechanism of coal slime and biomass co-combustion. The research findings also provide theoretical guidance for the safe operation of coal slime and biomass co-combustion equipment.

Abstract:The composition and structural characteristics of Shengli lignite were characterized by ultimate analysis, 13C-NMR, and FTIR. Pyrolysis volatiles products of lignite were studied by TG-FTIR-GC/MS. Solid 13C-NMR analysis showed that the most abundant in Shengli lignite skeleton structure was aromatic carbon, followed by aliphatic carbon, and some carbonyl carbon. TG-FTIR-GC/MS analysis indicated that the main components of the small molecular gas released by Shengli lignite were CO2, CO, CH4, light arenes, etc., mainly from the carboxyl, carbonyl, aliphatic chains and aromatic structure in the lignite. Normalization method was used to describe the distribution of volatiles products. The release temperature of aliphatic, aromatic, phenolic and naphthalene substances is concentrated around 450–600 °C. The relative content of CO released at 540 °C is the highest, mainly from the pyrolysis of phenol. And the initial release temperature of CO is about 300 °C which is higher than that of CO2 and lower than that of CH4.

Abstract:The effects of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [Bmim][BF4] on the exothermic and heat transfer characteristics of three metamorphic grades of coal during low-temperature oxidation were investigated. The C80 microcalorimeter results showed that the IL inhibited the exothermic process and characteristics of long-flame and non-caking coals, whereas the IL had a growth-promoting influence on gas-fat coal. The kinetics calculation results showed that the apparent activation energy of long-flame and non-caking coals increased after treatment but gas-fat coal was subjected to the opposite effects. According to the consequences of the LFA457 laser flash system, the IL decreased the thermal diffusivity and increased the specific heat of long-flame and non-caking coals. It had a notable inhibiting effect on the heat transfer properties of the two coals. However, the influence of IL on the heat transfer characteristics of gas-fat coal shows a salient promoting effect. Therefore, we conclude that the IL inhibited the generation and transfer of heat during the low-temperature oxidation of long-flame and non-caking coals. This prevented the occurrence and development of coal spontaneous combustion, but it had the opposite effect on gas-fat coal. The effect of the IL on the thermal behaviour of coal oxidation at low temperature varied with the degree of metamorphism of coal, and such an influence played a dual role in this because of its inhibition and promotion in relation to this reaction. This demonstrated that the IL did not inhibit the spontaneous combustion of all types of coal.

Abstract:The devolatilization and volatile combustion of lignite coal (LC), sub-bituminous coal (SBC) and bituminous coal (BC) with different O 2 concentrations (21%-50%) were investigated on a concentrating photothermal experiment platform. The characteristics and mechanism of different coal particle combustion were analyzed by using multiple diagnostics, including Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) of OH radicals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), high-speed cinematography and FT-IR. The results showed that, with increasing O 2 concentration, the ignition delay time ( t ign ) of different ranks of coal decreased, which was associated with the increase of OH concentrations during the ignition stage. The good correlation between t ign and OH concentration was observed. For the volatile combustion, the OH concentration, volatile release amount and volatile flame duration time ( t vol ) significantly increased with the increasing of O 2 concentration at low O 2 concentrations. In the higher O 2 concentrations, coals with different PAHs generation amount responded differently on the increasing of O 2 concentration. On one hand, for the coals with lower PAHs generation amount, the OH concentration increased with the increasing of O 2 concentration, while the t vol was not sensitive to changes of the O 2 concentration. On the other hand, for the coals with higher PAHs generation amount, the OH concentration decreased with the increasing of O 2 concentration while the t vol increased with the increasing of O 2 concentration. It can be concluded that PAHs inhibited the OH generation, and the generation characteristics of OH and PAHs affected the sustained state of volatile combustion. The higher PAHs concentration consumed higher amount of OH during the volatile combustion. Meanwhile, with the increasing of PAHs concentration, the reaction rate of H + O 2 +M → HO 2 +M in which PAHs participate was increased, inhibiting the reaction H + O 2 → OH+O , and the increasing of polymer soot of PAHs will reduce the flame temperature through thermal radiation, which further inhibited the OH formation.

Abstract:The propensity for spontaneous combustion of Inner Mongolia lignite irradiated in microwave irradiation was investigated. The functional groups on the lignite surface were obtained by FTIR and XPS spectra, and the pore structures of irradiated lignite were measured using N2 adsorption/desorption method. The propensity for spontaneous combustion of lignite was classified using the crossing-point method. The irradiation treatment in microwave resulted in a prominent decrease in moisture content, decomposition of oxygen-containing functional groups, breakage of long alkyl side-chains, and increase in aromatic carbons. The quality of lignite developed towards high-rank coals after microwave irradiation. Microwave irradiation showed significant effects on the pore structures of lignite; the specific surface area and total pore volume of the irradiated lignite initially increased and then significantly decreased. A short-term microwave irradiation resulted in an increase the spontaneous combustion propensity of lignite. However, when the irradiation time extended, the propensity for spontaneous combustion was reduced because of the significant change in chemical composition and drastic decomposition of the pore structures.

Abstract:Shengli lignite with high moisture content from the Inner Mongolia region of China was upgraded by microwave irradiation to prepare high-quality coal water slurry (CWS) fuel for combustion and gasification. The physicochemical properties of the upgraded lignite on the as-received basis were investigated with Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, N2 adsorption porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, contact angle analysis and rotary viscometry. Oxygen functional groups with high hydrophilicity decreased in the upgraded lignite. The decreased molar ratio of aliphatic hydrogen to aromatic hydrogen implied an increase in coalification degree. The particle size and contact angle of the upgraded lignite increased. When the upgraded lignite with a decreased hydrophilicity index was used to prepare CWS, the maximum solid concentration increased from 45.6 wt.% to 51.7 wt.%. Microwave irradiation was more efficient for removing external free moisture than internal bonded moisture in Shengli lignite. The unit energy consumption for external moisture removal and CWS concentration promotion was lower than that for internal moisture removal.
