Abstract:Due to their ultra-short duration and peak currents in the kA range, laser-wakefield accelerated electron bunches are promising drivers for ultrafast X-ray generation in compact free-electron-lasers (FELs), Thomson-scattering or betatron sources. Here we present the first single-shot, high-resolution measurements of the longitudinal bunch profile obtained without prior assumptions about the bunch shape. Our method allows complex features, such as multi-bunch structures, to be detected. Varying the length of the gas target, and thus the acceleration length, enables an assessment of the bunch profile evolution during the acceleration process. We find a minimum bunch duration of 4.2 fs (full width at half maximum) with shot-to-shot fluctuation of 11% rms. Our results suggest that after depletion of the laser energy, a transition from a laser-driven to a particle-driven wakefield occurs, associated with the injection of a secondary bunch. The resulting double-bunch structure might act as an elegant approach for driver-witness type experiments, i.e. allowing a non-dephasing-limited acceleration of the secondary bunch in a plasma-afterburner stage.

Abstract:Abstract Laser wakefield acceleration, as an advanced accelerator concept, has attracted great attentions for its ultrahigh acceleration gradient and the capability to produce high brightness electron bunches. The three-dimensional (3D) density serves as an evaluation metric for the particle bunch quality and is intrinsically related to the applications of an accelerator. Despite its significance, this parameter has not been experimentally measured in the investigation of laser wakefield acceleration. We report on an electro-optic 3D snapshot of a laser wakefield electron bunch at a position outside the plasma. The 3D shape of the electron bunch was detected by simultaneously performing optical transition radiation imaging and electro-optic sampling. Detailed 3D structures to a few micrometer levels were reconstructed using a genetic algorithm. The electron bunch possessed a transverse size of less than 30 micrometers. The current profile shows a multi-peak structure. The main peak had a duration of 1 kA. The maximum electron 3D number density was ~ 9 × 10 21 m -3 . This research demonstrates a feasible way of 3D density monitoring on femtosecond kilo-ampere electron bunches, at any position of a beam transport line for relevant applications.

Techniques for measuring beam longitudinal phase space as well as the x-ray pulse shape in an x-ray FEL are also discussed.

Abstract:Laser plasma accelerators produce ultra-short, low emittance electron bunches that show potential for use in multistage colliders or for seeding free electron lasers. However, to optimize these novel accelerators for such applications, new diagnostics for micron-scale beams must be developed. In this paper we present single shot coherent optical transition radiation diagnostics that measure spatial and momentum distributions of microbunched high energy electron populations at the exit of a laser plasma accelerator. We show correspondence between the measured position and momentum of the electron beamlets as well as transverse distribution reconstructions of the coherent portion of the beam on a single shot at a variety of wavelengths. Finally, we propose a scheme for a full three-dimensional reconstruction of an electron bunch through coherent transition radiation analysis.

Abstract:Transient electric fields, which are an important but hardly explored parameter of laser plasmas, can now be diagnosed experimentally with combined ultrafast temporal resolution and field sensitivity, using femtosecond to picosecond electron or proton pulses as probes. However, poor spatial resolution poses great challenges to simultaneously recording both the global and local field features. Here, we present a direct 3D measurement of a transient electric field by time-resolved electron schlieren radiography with simultaneous 80-μm spatial and 3.7-ps temporal resolutions, analyzed using an Abel inversion algorithm. The electric field here is built up at the front of an aluminum foil irradiated with a femtosecond laser pulse at 1.9 × 10(12) W/cm(2), where electrons are emitted at a speed of 4 × 10(6) m/s, resulting in a unique "peak-valley" transient electric field map with the field strength up to 10(5) V/m. Furthermore, time-resolved schlieren radiography with charged particle pulses should enable the mapping of various fast-evolving field structures including those found in plasma-based particle accelerators.

Abstract:Ultrafast electron and X-ray imaging and spectroscopy are the basis for an ongoing revolution in the understanding of dynamical atomic-scale processes in matter. The underlying technology relies heavily on laser science for the generation and characterization of ever shorter pulses. Recent findings suggest that ultrafast electron microscopy with attosecond-structured wavefunctions may be feasible. However, such future technologies call for means to both prepare and fully analyse the corresponding free-electron quantum states. Here, we introduce a framework for the preparation, coherent manipulation and characterization of free-electron quantum states, experimentally demonstrating attosecond electron pulse trains. Phase-locked optical fields coherently control the electron wavefunction along the beam direction. We establish a new variant of quantum state tomography—‘SQUIRRELS’—for free-electron ensembles. The ability to tailor and quantitatively map electron quantum states will promote the nanoscale study of electron–matter entanglement and new forms of ultrafast electron microscopy down to the attosecond regime.

Abstract:It has long been known that lasers can interact with relativistic electrons in magnetic undulators to imprint sinusoidal modulations that can be used to slice electrons into microbunches equally separated at the laser wavelength. Here we report on the first direct measurement of laser-induced microbunching of a relativistic electron beam with femtosecond resolution in the time domain. Using a modified zero-phasing technique to map the electron beam's temporal structures into the energy space, we show that this method can be used to directly quantify the time and spectral content of coherent current modulations imprinted on the beam for harmonic and multicolor lasing applications in accelerator-based light sources.

Abstract:We numerically study the relativistic ponderomotive scattering of an ultrafast electron beam with a focused high-intensity laser pulse using a three-dimensional test-particle code. The temporal evolution of the spatial distribution and the energy spectrum of the scattered electron beam are investigated. The method using the ponderomotive scattering effect to measure the pulse duration of an ultrashort electron beam is discussed in detail. Taking into account the group velocity mismatch, the interaction geometry, and electron energy spectrum modified by the ponderomotive forces, the pulse duration of ultrashort electron beams can be retrieved by the ponderomotive scattering cross-correlation method.
Sub-femtosecond electron bunches created by direct laser acceleration in a laser wakefield accelerator with ionization injection

Abstract:In this work, we will show through three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations that direct laser acceleration in laser a wakefield accelerator can generate sub-femtosecond electron bunches. Two simulations were done with two laser pulse durations, such that the shortest laser pulse occupies only a fraction of the first bubble, whereas the longer pulse fills the entire first bubble. In the latter case, as the trapped electrons moved forward and interacted with the high intensity region of the laser pulse, micro-bunching occurred naturally, producing 0.5 fs electron bunches. This is not observed in the short pulse simulation.

Abstract:Efforts to push the spatiotemporal imaging-resolution limits of femtosecond laser-driven ultrafast electron microscopes (UEMs) to the combined angstrom–fs range will benefit from stable sources capable of generating high bunch charges. Recent demonstrations of unconventional off-axis photoemitting geometries are promising, but connections to the observed onset of structural dynamics are yet to be established. Here we use the in-situ photoexcitation of coherent phonons to quantify the relative time-of-flight (r-TOF) of photoelectron packets generated from the Ni Wehnelt aperture and from a Ta cathode set-back from the aperture plane. We further support the UEM experiments with particle-tracing simulations of the precise electron-gun architecture and photoemitting geometries. In this way, we measure discernible shifts in electron-packet TOF of tens of picoseconds for the two photoemitting surfaces. These shifts arise from the impact that the Wehnelt-aperture off-axis orientation has on the electron-momentum distribution, which modifies both the collection efficiency and the temporal-packet distribution relative to on-axis emission. Future needs are identified; we expect this and other developments in UEM electron-gun configuration to expand the range of material phenomena that can be directly imaged on scales commensurate with fundamental structural dynamics.

Abstract:Laser wakefield acceleration has proven to be an excellent source of electrons and X-rays suitable for ultra-fast probing of matter. These novel beams have demonstrated unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution allowing for new discoveries in material science and plasma physics. In particular, the study of dynamic processes such as non-thermal melt and lattice changes on femtosecond time-scales have paved a way to completely new scientific horizons. Here, we demonstrate the first single-shot electron radiography measurement using an femtosecond electron source based on the downramp-density gradient laser-wakefield-acceleration with the use of a compact Ti:sapphire laser. A quasi-monoenergetic electron beam with mean energy of 1.9 ± 0.4 MeV and charge 77 ± 47 pC per shot was generated by the laser incident onto a gas target and collimated using a two ring-magnet beam path. High quality electron radiography of solid objects with spatial resolution better than 150 [Formula: see text]m was demonstrated. Further developments of this scheme have the potential to obtain single-shot ultrafast electron diffraction from dynamic lattices. This scheme poses a great promise for smaller scale university laboratories and facilities for efficient single-shot probing of warm dense matter, medical imaging and the study of dynamic processes in matter with broad application to inertial confinement fusion and meso-scale materials (mg g/cm[Formula: see text]).

Abstract:We obtain single-shot time-resolved shadowgraph images of the electromagnetic fields resulting from the interaction of a high intensity ultrashort laser pulse with a metal surface. Using a high brightness relativistic electron beam and a high streaking speed radiofrequency deflector, we report <35 fs temporal resolution enabling a direct visualization of the retarded-time dominated field evolution which follows the laser-induced charge emission. A model including the finite signal propagation speed well reproduces the data and yields measurements of fundamental parameters in short pulse laser-matter interaction such as the amount of emitted charge and the emission time scale.

Abstract:The development of fast detection methods for comprehensive monitoring of electron bunches is a prerequisite to gain comprehensive control over the synchrontron emission in storage rings with their MHz repetition rate. Here, we present a proof-of-principle experiment with at detailed description of our implementation to detect the longitudinal electron bunch profiles via single-shot, near-field electro-optical sampling at the Karlsruhe Research Accelerator (KARA). Our experiment is equipped with an ultra-fast line array camera providing a high-throughput MHz data stream. We characterize statistical properties of the obtained data set and give a detailed description for the data processing as well as for the calculation of the charge density profiles, which where measured in the short-bunch operation mode of KARA. Finally, we discuss properties of the bunch profile dynamics on a coarse-grained level on the example of the well-known synchrotron oscillation.

Abstract:We report an ultrafast electron imaging system for real-time examination of ultrafast plasma dynamics in four dimensions. It consists of a femtosecond pulsed electron gun and a two-dimensional single electron detector. The device has an unprecedented capability of acquiring a high-quality shadowgraph image with a single ultrashort electron pulse, thus permitting the measurement of irreversible processes using a single-shot scheme. In a prototype experiment of laser-induced plasma of a metal target under moderate pump intensity, we demonstrated its unique capability of acquiring high-quality shadowgraph images on a micron scale with a-few-picosecond time resolution.
High Energy Electron Radiography Experiment Research Based on Picosencond Pulse Width Bunch

Abstract:A new scheme is proposed that high energy electron beam as a probe is used for time resolved imaging measurement of high energy density materials, especially for high energy density matter and inertial confinement fusion. The first picosecond pulse-width electron radiography experiment was achieved by Institute of Modern Physics (IMP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Tsinghua University (THU), based on THU Linear electron accelerator (LINAC). It is used for principle test and certifying that this kind of LINAC with ultra-short pulse electron bunch can be used for electron radiography. The experiment results, such as magnifying factor and the imaging distortion, are consistent with the beam optical theory well. The 2.5 um RMS spatial resolution has been gotten with magnifying factor 46, without optimization the imaging lens section. It is found that in the certain range of magnifying factor, the RMS spatial resolution will get better with bigger magnifying factor. The details of experiment set up, results, analysis and discussions are presented here.

Abstract:Direct imaging is a key tool for diagnostics of density transition in different material composition. Ultrafast electron bunches from 100 TW‐level laser system are attractive in future applications. Experiments for direct imaging with 100 MeV electrons are conducted using a 200 TW laser facility in Peking University. Electron bunches with energy spectra ranging from 100 to 150 MeV are achieved with a mixture gas of 0.5% nitrogen and 99.5% helium. Herein, the contrast imaging, transmission, and slit experiments are conducted and analyzed. It turns out the superiority of the hundreds of MeV electrons in thick material imaging applications. It is also anticipated that this technology can be used for ultrafast dynamic analysis with the advent of higher charge electrons in a single ultrafast bunch from laser‐driven electron accelerators.
Generation and Measurement of Sub-Picosecond Electron Bunch in Photocathode Rf Gun

Abstract:We consider a scheme to generate a sub-picosecond electron bunch in the photocathode rf gun by improving the acceleration gradient in the gun, suitably tuning the bunch charge, the laser spot size and the acceleration phase, and reducing the growth of transverse emittance by laser shaping. A nondestructive technique is also reported to measure the electron bunch length, by measuring the high-frequency spectrum of wakefield radiation which is caused by the passage of a relativistic electron bunch through a channel surrounded by a dielectric.
Imaging Single Electrons to Enable the Generation of Ultrashort Beams for Single-Shot Femtosecond Relativistic Electron Diffraction

Abstract:The generation and control of relativistic electron beams well suited for ultrafast electron diffraction application has rapidly advanced, greatly benefiting from the overlap in techniques and expertise with the accelerator community. However, imaging the diffracted MeV electrons with high detection efficiency has remained an under-explored area. In this paper, we report on a quantitative study of the imaging of MeV electrons using a detection system consisting of a phosphor screen, a lens-coupling optics, and a charge-coupled device camera. It is shown that every MeV electron in the beam yields a signal well above the camera noise. With this detection efficiency, only ∼105 electrons per pulse are needed to obtain a high quality single-shot diffraction pattern from a crystalline sample. We measured that such a low charge beam can be as short as 30 fs rms. Further, we discuss the possibility of compressing these electron beams to sub-5 fs rms bunch length by velocity bunching using a short high gradient rf accelerating structure scheduled to be installed next year at the UCLA Pegasus Laboratory. This opens the possibility of single-shot determinations of structural changes in many ultrafast physical processes like nonequilibrium phonon dynamics or relaxation pathways in systems with strong electron-phonon coupling.
