Abstract:Backward Raman amplification of a short laser pulse in a plasma waveguide is demonstrated. With a guided seed pulse of 0.8-microJ energy and a pump pulse of 345-mJ energy in a 9-mm-long optically preformed plasma waveguide, 910-fold energy amplification is achieved. Heating of the plasma by the long pump pulse is identified to be a key issue for plasma-waveguide-based backward Raman amplifiers.

Abstract:Three-photon pumped cavityless lasing experiments have shown that the forward and backward stimulated emission (cavityless lasing) beams manifest different divergence angles and spatial/temporal fluctuation behaviors. When a dye solution as the gain medium is pumped by a pulsed laser beam with ~ 1500-nm wavelength and ~ 150-fs pulse duration, the backward stimulated emission beam exhibits a smaller divergence angle and much better spatial/temporal stability than the forward stimulated emission beam. These apparently unexpected results can be explained reasonably by assuming that the backward stimulated emission beam exhibits an optical phase-conjugation property, so that influences from a random spatial/temporal change of the refractive-index in the lasing medium can be automatically removed for this backward lasing beam. A physical model of wave-front reconstruction via pump-beam induced holographic grating in an aberrated gain medium is proposed, which is supported by a rigorous theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The wealth of work in backward Raman amplification in plasma has focused on the extreme intensity limit; however, backward Raman amplification may also provide an effective and practical mechanism for generating intense, broad bandwidth, long-wavelength infrared radiation (LWIR). An electromagnetic simulation coupled with a relativistic cold fluid plasma model is used to demonstrate the generation of picosecond pulses at a wavelength of 10 μm with terawatt powers through backward Raman amplification. The effects of collisional damping, Landau damping, pump depletion, and wave breaking are examined, as well as the resulting design considerations for an LWIR Raman amplifier.

Self-compression of stimulated Raman backscattering by a flying focus

Abstract:The regime of self-compression has been proposed for plasma-based backward Raman amplification upon a flying focus. By using a pumping focus moving with a speed equal to the group velocity of stimulated Raman backscattering (SRBS), only a short part of SRBS which always synchronizes with the flying focus can be amplified. Therefore, instead of a short pulse, plasma noise or a long pulse can seed the BRA amplifiers. Here we demonstrate the regime by 2D particle-in-cell simulations, showing that the pump pulse is compressed from 26 ps to 116 fs, with an output amplitude comparable with the case of a well-synchronized short seed. As only one laser pulse is used in the simulation, the results present a significant path to simplify the Raman amplifiers.

Abstract:We present a proposal to manipulate the Raman process via incoherent pump, tunable intensity, and phase control of the driving fields. It is found that Raman absorptive peaks can become Raman gain peaks by controlling the incoherent pump, and this property leads to the group velocity of a weak probe pulse from subluminal to superluminal with less absorption or gain. Furthermore, it is also shown that Raman gain peaks can be controlled not only by controlling the intensities of the driving fields but also by adjusting phases of the driving fields, and this leads to the strong negative dispersion with less gain.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally that optical phase conjugation can be used to focus light through strongly scattering media even when far less than a photon per optical degree of freedom is detected. We found that the best achievable intensity contrast is equal to the total number of detected photons, as long as the resolution of the system is high enough. Our results demonstrate that phase conjugation can be used even when the photon budget is extremely low, such as in high-speed focusing through dynamic media, or imaging deep inside tissue.

Abstract:In this paper, we review different designs of distributed Raman amplifiers which have been proposed to minimize the signal power profile asymmetry in mid-link optical phase conjugation systems. We demonstrate how the symmetrical signal power profiles along the fiber can be achieved using various distributed Raman amplification techniques in the single-span and more realistic multi-span circumstances. In addition, we show the theoretically predicted results of the Kerr nonlinear product reduction with different Raman techniques in mid-link optical phase conjugator systems, and then in-line/long-haul transmission performance using numerical simulations.

Abstract:The key remaining technological challenge to the realization of further power scaling for high-power fiber laser systems is overcoming the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect. In past years, chirped and tilted fiber Bragg gratings (CTFBGs) have been demonstrated to be a simple and effective way to suppress SRS in high-power fiber amplifiers. However, the weak reflection at the Bragg wavelength could be strongly amplified, which not only limits the power and efficiency but also degrades the beam quality. We report here, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the influence of the residual Bragg reflection of CTFBGs on SRS suppression in high-power fiber laser systems. Two groups of CTFBGs with different Bragg reflection wavelengths are fabricated and used for the comparison experiments. Test results show that the CTFBGs of longer Bragg wavelengths have a better suppression effect, in particular, at a higher power level. By further moving the Bragg wavelength of a CTFBG out of the Raman gain spectral range, a better suppression effect and a promotion in laser efficiency could be achieved, which is very useful for further power scaling.

Abstract:Many experimental platforms for quantum science depend on state control via laser fields. Frequently, however, the control fidelity is limited by optical phase noise. This is exacerbated in stabilized laser systems where high-frequency phase noise is an unavoidable consequence of feedback. Here we implement an optical feedforward technique to suppress laser phase noise in the STIRAP state transfer of ultracold RbCs molecules, across 114 THz, from a weakly bound Feshbach state to the rovibrational ground state. By performing over 100 state transfers on single molecules, we measure a significantly enhanced transfer efficiency of 98.7(1)% limited only by available laser intensity.

Abstract:Revisiting the pioneering work of Avizonis et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 31, 435 (1977)], we experimentally demonstrate that wave-front reversal of picosecond optical signals can be efficiently achieved with low-gain parametric amplification. The use of a KTP crystal permits forward phase conjugation of radiation with high divergence (40 mrad) and a broad spectrum (20 nm). The potential application of this technique to compensate for the group-velocity dispersion of standard optical fibers in the 1.55-microm window is discussed.

Abstract:An experimental study on optical phase conjugation is developed in a double-pass high repetition rate laser diode pumped Nd:YAG amplifier. The traditional 0° HR mirror is replaced with a quartz glass rod phase conjugator. A stable phase conjugating reflection is realized at 400 Hz repetition rate with a 20 ns pulse width input. As a result, the beam distortion caused by the thermal effect of the gain medium is well compensated, and a better amplified output beam profile with no diffraction ring is observed. The output beam M2 is improved from 4 to 1.4. The optical breakdown or injury in quartz glass is avoided.

Abstract:To reduce the thermal effect to beam quality in solid-state laser with high repetition rate, multimode optical fiber as phase conjugator has been experimentally investigated in an laser diode-pumped, electrooptical Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with double-pass amplifier. The laser was operated on 100 Hz repetition rate and 20 ns pulse width. Perfect correction of laser profile distortion in amplifier and beam quality close to diffraction limit has been achieved. Pulse width of phase-conjugated laser was compressed to 7 ns while compression ratio reached 3:1. Beam glitter has also been observed in lower pumping energy close to stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold. With increase of energy coupled into fiber, that phenomenon was weakened, and higher stability was achieved. In the case of 5.3 mJ input energy, instability less than 14% is obtained, while SBS reflectivity and depolarization ratio were 32.6% and 7% respectively.

Abstract:Optical phase conjugation by stimulated Brillouin scattering, excited by an inhomogeneous light field with a self-focusing strong component, has been investigated. The conjugation fraction \ensuremath{\eta} depends on the intensity ratio \ensuremath{\sigma} of the strong component to the total pump light, attaining a maximum at a certain value of \ensuremath{\sigma}. Theoretical analysis shows that a four-wave-mixing process is involved in its physical mechanism. By taking into account the effect of self-focusing, a fair agreement with experiments is obtained.

Abstract:Phase conjugation with high quality can be obtained by stimulated Brillouin scattering in the focused beams' scheme, even when the in homogeneous pump light contains a self-focusing strong component. The scattered light originates from the selftrapped filament regions. The conjugation fraction η depends on the intensi ty ratio a of the strong component and the total incident light, attaining a maximum ηmax (=80%) at a certain value of σ. By taking in-tc account the effect of self-focusing on η(σ), a fair agreement with experiments is obtained.

Abstract:Optical nonreciprocity plays an important role in optical communication and quantum networks. In this research, we propose and demonstrate a conversion scheme of magnetic-free dual-channel optical reciprocal amplification (RA) and nonreciprocal amplification (NRA) based on the multiple degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) process in hot atoms. In our experiment, the dual-channel NRA works with the action of a single pump field based on the establishment of FWM in the same direction and breaking in the opposite direction. Based on stable ground-state Zeeman coherence, by introducing a counter-propagating pump field again, NRA can be changed to RA in the opposite direction of the two original amplified conjugate signals. Moreover, the frequencies of RA signals are very dependent on those of co-propagating pump fields. The experimental realization of NRA-RA conversion may have applications for multichannel angular momentum spatial multiplexing and quantum gate manipulation.

Abstract:In plasma-based backward Raman amplifiers, the output pulse intensity increases with the input pump pulse intensity, as long as the Langmuir wave mediating energy transfer from the pump to the seed pulse remains intact. However, at high pump intensity, the Langmuir wave breaks, at which point the amplification efficiency may no longer increase with the pump intensity. Numerical simulations presented here, employing a one-dimensional Vlasov-Maxwell code, show that, although the amplification efficiency remains high when the pump only mildly exceeds the wavebreaking threshold, the efficiency drops precipitously at larger pump intensities.

Abstract:We present a self-pumped phase conjugator (SPPC) based on backward stimulated photorefractive scattering in a BaTiO3:Ce crystal in air without any external seed beam. Stable reflectivities of as much as 70% and good phase conjugate fidelity have been demonstrated in the 0°-cut crystals. Over 50% reflectivities at 515 nm have been obtained at an incident angle between 20° and 70°. In comparison with undoped 0°-cut and 45°-cut crystals, the buildup time of SPPC is much faster for the same intensity.

Abstract:Powerful incoherent laser pulses can propagate in focusing Kerr media much longer distances than can coherent pulses, due to the fast phase mixing that prevents transverse filamentation. This distance is limited by 4-wave scattering, which accumulates waves at small transverse wave numbers, where phase mixing is too slow to retain the incoherence and thus prevent the filamentation. However, we identify how this theoretical limit can be overcome by countering this accumulation through transverse heating of the pulse by random fluctuations of the refractive index. Thus, the laser pulse propagation distances are significantly extended, making feasible, in particular, the generation of unprecedentedly intense and powerful short laser pulses in a plasma by means of backward Raman amplification in new random laser regimes.

Abstract:Making use of optical phase conjugation effect and Q-switch effect in stimulated Brillouin scattering, a Nd:YAG laser with phase-conjugate resonator was developed. The reflecting mirror and Q-switch in traditional lasers are not used. The laser output is 100 mJ, and the pulse width is 13 ns. The corresponding total conversion efficiency of the laser is 0.47%. A KTP optical parametric oscillator was inserted into the resonator so the oscillator output wavelength of 1.57 μm and the output energy of 15 mJ can be obtained.

Abstract:We show that the backward-stimulated Rayleigh-Bragg scattering (SRBS) can be efficiently generated in a three-photon absorbing medium. Compared with all other known stimulated (such as Brillouin and Raman) scattering effects, the observed effect exhibits the following three features: (i) no frequency shift, (ii) a lower pump threshold, and (iii) no critical requirement for pump spectral linewidths within a range of Δv¯≤1cm−1. The specific nonlinear scattering medium is a three-photon absorbing chromophore solution (PRL-OT04 in chloroform), pumped by 1064nm laser pulses of nanoseconds duration but with three different spectral linewidths. The mechanism for generating backward SRBS in a three-photon active medium is the formation of a stationary Bragg grating enhanced by three-photon-absorption-associated refractive index changes. A superior optical phase-conjugation property of the backward SRBS beam has been experimentally demonstrated by employing two different optical setups. In both cases, a specially introduced aberration influence of 4-5 mrad can be basically removed by the backward SRBS beam that retains a much smaller beam divergence of ≤0.4 mrad.
