Abstract:I show that the photon pairs used in experimental tests of quantum non-locality based on Bell's theorem are not in the entangled quantum state. The correct quantum state of the ``entangled'' photon pairs is suggested. Two experiments for testing this quantum state are proposed.

Abstract:We introduce photon-added entangled coherent states (unnormalized) : and investigate the entanglement by employing the entropy of entanglement. Then, we propose a scheme of probabilistic teleportation via photon-added entangled coherent states. It is shown that the mean fidelity of the scheme can be increased by exciting entangled coherent states in the case of nonmaximally entangled quantum channel. The violation of the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt inequality for photon-added entangled coherent states is also examined.

Abstract:A nonlinear planar waveguide pumped by a beam orthogonal to its surface may serve as a versatile source of photon pairs. Changing pump-pulse duration, pump-beam transverse width, and angular decomposition of pump-beam frequencies characteristics of a photon pair including spectral widths of signal and idler fields, their time durations as well as degree of entanglement of two fields can be changed significantly. Using the measured spectral widths of the down-converted fields and width of a coincidence-count dip in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer entropy of entanglement can be determined.

Abstract:The entanglement of pair cat states in the phase damping channel is studied by employing the relative entropy of entanglement. It is shown that the pair cat states can always be distillable in the phase damping channel. Furthermore, we analyze the fidelity of teleportation for the pair cat states by using joint measurements of the photon-number sum and phase difference.

Abstract:Bell's theorem1 states that certain statistical correlations predicted by quantum physics for measurements on two-particle systems cannot be understood within a realistic picture based on local properties of each individual particle—even if the two particles are separated by large distances. Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen first recognized2 the fundamental significance of these quantum correlations (termed ‘entanglement’ by Schrödinger3) and the two-particle quantum predictions have found ever-increasing experimental support4. A more striking conflict between quantum mechanical and local realistic predictions (for perfect correlations) has been discovered5,6; but experimental verification has been difficult, as it requires entanglement between at least three particles. Here we report experimental confirmation of this conflict, using our recently developed method7 to observe three-photon entanglement, or ‘Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger’ (GHZ) states. The results of three specific experiments, involving measurements of polarization correlations between three photons, lead to predictions for a fourth experiment; quantum physical predictions are mutually contradictory with expectations based on local realism. We find the results of the fourth experiment to be in agreement with the quantum prediction and in striking conflict with local realism.

Abstract:We have applied an entanglement purification protocol to produce a single entangled pair of photons capable of violating a Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality from two pairs that individually could not. The initial poorly entangled photons were created by a controllable decoherence that introduced complex errors. All of the states were reconstructed using quantum state tomography which allowed for a quantitative description of the improvement of the state after purification.

Abstract:There are two powerful arguments against the possibility of extending quantum mechanics, the violation of Bell inequalities and the Kochen-Specker theorem, but the connection between the two remains confused. Following the distinctive strategy proposed by Cabello [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 070401 (2021)], Bell inequalities can be violated by state-independent contextuality sets. However, the experimental realization of such ideas is challenging as it requires high-dimensional entanglement. Orbital angular momentum provides an unlimited state space and the number of effective dimensions can be readily tailored as required. We performed an experimental test of non-locality based on Bell inequalities from contextuality, using orbital angular momentum entanglement in a bipartite photonic system. Our experiment not only shows a new way to produce non-locality but also connects contextuality and non-locality, two fundamental quantum resources that are critical for quantum computation and secure communication tasks.

Abstract:Photons may have homogeneous polarization and may carry qua ntized orbital angular momentum (OAM). Photon entanglement has been realized in various degrees of fre edom such as polarization and OAM. Using a pair of orthogonally polarized states carrying opposite-handedn ess quantized OAMs could create “quantized” vectorpolarization states with space-variant polarization stru ctures. It is thus possible to extend the polarization degre e of freedom from two dimensional space to indefinite dimensio al discreteHilbert space. We present a class of vector-polarization entangled Bell states, which use the s patial modes of the vector fields with space-variant polarization structure. We propose a scheme of creating the vector-polarization entangled Bell states using a Sagnac interferometer. We also design an analyzer for ident ifying the vector-polarization entangled Bell states. Such a class of entanglement is important for quantum inform ation science and technology, and fundamental issues of quantum theory, due to its advantage of the increas e in information capacity.

Abstract:Quantum state transfer between microwave and optical frequencies is essential for connecting superconducting quantum circuits to optical systems and extending microwave quantum networks over long distances. However, establishing such a quantum interface is extremely challenging because the standard direct quantum transduction requires both high coupling efficiency and small added noise. We propose an entanglement-based scheme-generating microwave-optical entanglement and using it to transfer quantum states via quantum teleportation-which can bypass the stringent requirements in direct quantum transduction and is robust against loss errors. In addition, we propose and analyze a counterintuitive design-suppress the added noise by placing the device at a higher temperature environment-which can improve both the device quality factor and power handling capability. We systematically analyze the generation and verification of entangled microwave-optical-photon pairs. The parameter for entanglement verification favors the regime of cooperativity mismatch and can tolerate certain thermal noises. Our scheme is feasible given the latest advances on electro-optomechanics, and can be generalized to various physical systems.
Experimental Sharing of Nonlocality among Multiple Observers with One Entangled Pair via Optimal Weak Measurements

Abstract:Bell nonlocality plays a fundamental role in quantum theory. Numerous tests of the Bell inequality have been reported since the ground-breaking discovery of the Bell theorem.Up to now, however, most discussions of the Bell scenario have focused on a single pair of entangled particles distributed to only two separated observers. Recently, it has been shown surprisingly that multiple observers can share the nonlocality present in a single particle from an entangled pair using the method of weak measurements [Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 114}, 250401 (2015)]. Here we report an observation of double CHSH-Bell inequality violations for a single pair of entangled photons with strength continuous-tunable optimal weak measurements in photonic system for the first time. Our results not only shed new light on the interplay between nonlocality and quantum measurements but may also be significant for important applications such as unbounded randomness certification and quantum steering.

Abstract:The physical impact and the testability of the Kochen-Specker (KS) theorem is debated because of the fact that perfect compatibility in a single quantum system cannot be achieved in practical experiments with finite precision. Here, we follow the proposal of A. Cabello and M. T. Cunha [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 190401 (2011)], and present a compatibility-loophole-free experimental violation of an inequality of noncontextual theories by two spatially separated entangled qutrits. A maximally entangled qutrit-qutrit state with a fidelity as high as 0.975±0.001 is prepared and distributed to separated spaces, and these two photons are then measured locally, providing the compatibility requirement. The results show that the inequality for noncontextual theory is violated by 31 standard deviations. Our experiments pave the way to close the debate about the testability of the KS theorem. In addition, the method to generate high-fidelity and high-dimension entangled states will provide significant advantages in high-dimension quantum encoding and quantum communication.
A ug 2 00 2 Testing the quantum entanglement swapping with type I parametric down conversion

Abstract:We propose a simple scheme to probilistically make the high quality quantum entanglement swapping with the type I parametric down conversion. After the swapping, two spatially separated parties who have never interacted each other are entangled through a single photon entangled state. Our scheme only requires the normal photon detecters which can distinguish the vacuum and non-vacuum Fock states. As it is well known that [1,2], if two spatially separated parties, Alice and Bob each shares a Bell state with a third party, Clare, quantum entanglement can be built up by a Bell meassurement in the subspace of Clare. Such an entanglement swapping process shows the non-local propery of quantum mechanics because the subspaces of Alice and Bob can be entangled without any interaction or any quantum state transportation. An entanglement swapping experiment was done by the Innsbruck group some years ago [3]. However, similar to the case of the quantum teleportation experiments [4,5], the scheme there requires a very sophisticated photon detector to distinguish the one photon and two photons [6]. Abstract:We propose a scheme to generate a family of four-photon polarization-entangled states from the second-order emission of the spontaneous parametric down-conversion (PDC) process. Based on linear optical elements and the coincidence detection, the four indistinguishable photons emitted from PDC source result in the family of states which are so different from the previous. By tuning the orientation of wave plate, we are able to obtain the well-known four-photon Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) state, superposition of two (three) orthogonal GHZ states and generic superposition of four orthogonal GHZ states. As an application, we analyze quantum nonlocality for the present superposition states. Under particular phase settings, we calculate the local hidden variable (LHV) correlation and the quantum correlation function. As a result, the Bell inequality derived from the LHV correlation is completely violated by these four-photon entangled states. The maximal quantum violation occurs naturally with the four-photon GHZ state, and there exist the quantum violations which are larger than previously reported values over a surprisingly wide range. It means that the present four-photon entangled states are therefore suitable for testing the LHV theory.

Abstract:The role of the timing and order of quantum measurements is not just a fundamental question of quantum mechanics, but also a puzzling one. Any part of a quantum system that has finished evolving, can be measured immediately or saved for later, without affecting the final results, regardless of the continued evolution of the rest of the system. In addition, the non-locality of quantum mechanics, as manifested by entanglement, does not apply only to particles with spatial separation, but also with temporal separation. Here we demonstrate these principles by generating and fully characterizing an entangled pair of photons that never coexisted. Using entanglement swapping between two temporally separated photon pairs we entangle one photon from the first pair with another photon from the second pair. The first photon was detected even before the other was created. The observed quantum correlations manifest the non-locality of quantum mechanics in spacetime.

Abstract:Quantum theory is commonly formulated in complex Hilbert spaces. However, the question of whether complex numbers need to be given a fundamental role in the theory has been debated since its pioneering days. Recently it has been shown that tests in the spirit of a Bell inequality can reveal quantum predictions in entanglement swapping scenarios that cannot be modeled by the natural real-number analog of standard quantum theory. Here, we tailor such tests for implementation in state-of-the-art photonic systems. We experimentally demonstrate quantum correlations in a network of three parties and two independent EPR sources that violate the constraints of real quantum theory by over 4.5 standard deviations, hence disproving real quantum theory as a universal physical theory.

Deterministic and Highly Efficient Quantum Cryptography wi th Entangled Photon Pairs

Abstract:We present a protocol for deterministic and highly efficient quantum cryptography with entangled photon pairs in a 4x4-dimentional Hilbert space. Two communicating parties, Alice and Bob first share a both polarization- and path-entangled photon pair, and then each performs a complete Bell-state measurement on their own photon in one of two complementary Bell-state bases. It is demonstrated that each measurement in which both Alice and Bob register a photon can build certain perfect correlation and generate 1.5 key bits on average. The security of our protocol is guaranteed by the non-cloning theorem.

Abstract:We review recent experiments concerning multi-photon Greenberger–Horne– Zeilinger (GHZ) entanglement. We have experimentally demonstrated GHZ entanglement of up to four photons by making use of pulsed parametric downconversion. On the basis of measurements on three-photon entanglement, we have realized the first experimental test of quantum non-locality following from the GHZ argument. Not only does multi-particle entanglement enable various fundamental tests of quantum mechanics versus local realism, but it also plays a crucial role in many quantum-communication and quantumcomputation schemes.

Experimental quantum non-Gaussian coincidences of entangled photons

Abstract:Quantum non-Gaussianity, a more potent and highly useful form of nonclassicality, excludes all convex mixtures of Gaussian states and Gaussian parametric processes generating them. Here, for the first time, we conclusively test quantum non-Gaussian coincidences of entangled photon pairs with the CHSH-Bell factor $S=2.328\pm0.004$ from a single quantum dot with a depth up to $0.94\pm 0.02$ dB. Such deterministically generated photon pairs fundamentally overcome parametric processes by reducing crucial multiphoton errors. For the quantum non-Gaussian depth of the unheralded (heralded) single-photon state, we achieve the value of $8.08\pm0.05$ dB ($19.06\pm0.29$ dB). Our work experimentally certifies the exclusive quantum non-Gaussianity properties highly relevant for optical sensing, communication and computation.
