Abstract:Scientific outreach activities play an important role in disseminating knowledge, connecting the general public to research and breaking down scientific skepticism barriers. However, the vision-impaired community is often disadvantaged when the most common audio-visual approach of scientific communication is applied. Here we integrated tactile clues in the scientific communication of immune processes involved in the autoimmune skin disease psoriasis. We fostered the involvement of the vision-impaired community through interactive experiences, including tactile scientific origami art, a haptic poster and wood-carved molecular models. Readily accessible science communication that engages a number of senses is a critical step toward making science more inclusive and engaging for individuals with a wide range of sensory abilities. The approach of the 2023 Monash Sensory Science exhibition aligns with the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion and helps to empower a more informed and scientifically literate public.

Abstract:People with blindness have limited access to the high-resolution graphical data and imagery of science. Here, a lithophane codex is reported. Its pages display tactile and optical readouts for universal visualization of data by persons with or without eyesight. Prototype codices illustrated microscopy of butterfly chitin—from N -acetylglucosamine monomer to fibril, scale, and whole insect—and were given to high schoolers from the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Lithophane graphics of Fischer-Spier esterification reactions and electron micrographs of biological cells were also 3D-printed, along with x-ray structures of proteins (as millimeter-scale 3D models). Students with blindness could visualize (describe, recall, distinguish) these systems—for the first time—at the same resolution as sighted peers (average accuracy = 88%). Tactile visualization occurred alongside laboratory training, synthesis, and mentoring by chemists with blindness, resulting in increased student interest and sense of belonging in science.

Abstract:A capacitive touch screen (CTS) is proposed here using hand gesture recognition for integration with Braille tactile displays for individuals with visual impairment. The CTS consists of a flexible polyimide layer and silver nanowire electrodes. The data are collected to classify several gestures using machine learning and deep learning. Using the YOLO model, a high validation accuracy, 97.76%, is achieved. Capacitive touch screens (CTS's) are essential components in most of today's digital devices. However, for the visually impaired (VI) users due to the uneven topography of the tactile surface, CTS's are more challenging to implement and thus this field remains largely underdeveloped. Considering the limited space around the microactuators driving the typical Braille dots for a tactile screen with ten dots‐per‐inch (dpi) resolution, the materials used for CTS should be flexible and durable with high mechanical strength. In this work, a flexible CTS based on polyimide (PI) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) as electrodes with a total thickness of 210 μm is developed. The dimensions of the AgNWs are on average 7.9 ± 2.4 μm in length and 85 ± 24 nm in width. The AgNWs electrodes showed low resistance and good adhesion to the PI substrate. A gesture recognition application is collected from the capacitive data to classify different gestures (including single‐ and double‐click, swipe‐left and ‐right, scroll‐up and ‐down as well as zoom‐in and ‐out) with two different approaches; machine learning and deep learning are implemented. The best performance is obtained using the YOLO model with a high validation accuracy of 97.76%. Finally, a software application is developed with the proposed hand gestures in real‐time to foster interaction of VI users with the tactile display allowing them to navigate a Windows file system and interact with the documents via hand gestures in a similar manner as sighted users on a conventional touch display will be able to do. This work paves the way to utilize CTS for the tactile displays in the market developed for VI users.

Abstract:This year (2019) represents the 150th year since the discovery of the periodic table of the elements (PTOE). In honor of this important event, we designed a PTOE chemical escape room (called ChEsRm) that is suitable for middle and high school chemistry students. The main idea behind this ChEsRm is that it is relatively easy and inexpensive for teachers to build in order to introduce the activity into as many chemistry classrooms as possible. The puzzles of ChEsRm include interesting facts regarding the elements, their every day use, and their properties, as well as the subatomic particles. Some involve actual experiments and other nonlaboratory activities. Participants are asked to solve a mystery: finding the cause of a mysterious death. Although most escape rooms use locks and keys, in this case the mechanism used to reveal the solution is different and more flexible. Here we provide a detailed description of all the puzzles and explain how to operate the escape room in a school lab.

Enabling Learning Experiences for Visually Impaired Children by Interaction Design

Abstract:Interaction design and tangible computing offer rich opportunities for supporting children with impairments by means of enhanced therapeutic toys and educational materials. In order to explore how technology can be utilized to meet special requirements in the education of visually impaired children (and teenagers), we set up a practice-based research project at a special health center and school for the blind. Drawing on a number of design experiments involving educators and affected children, we came up with design proposals that enabled instructive (sensory) experiences despite their impairments in the sensory system. We describe two interactive prototypes in detail – a tangible color-picker toy, that we named The Cuebe, and an Audio-Tactile Map designed for e-learning – and show how they can support children in building new skills by augmenting physical properties and affordances. In both prototypes, tactility, haptics, and interactivity were crucial features, since all experiences originated at the fingertips and then unfolded higher-level sensory and cognitive processes. Moreover, the prototypes were also characterized by a high degree of open-endedness and customizability in their design, allowing educators to incorporate them in flexible ways to meet the needs of the children.

Abstract:Abstract This review highlights the biomechanical foundations of braille and tactile graphic discrimination within the context of design innovations in information access for the blind and low vision community. Braille discrimination is a complex and poorly understood process that necessitates the coordination of motor control, mechanotransduction, and cognitive linguistic processing. Despite substantial technological advances and multiple design attempts over the last fifty years, a low-cost, high-fidelity refreshable braille and tactile graphics display has yet to be delivered. Consequently, the blind and low vision community are left with limited options for information access. This is amplified by the rapid adoption of graphical user interfaces for human computer interaction, a move that the blind and low vision community were effectively excluded from. Text-to-speech screen readers lack the ability to convey the nuances necessary for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math education and offer limited privacy for the user. Printed braille and tactile graphics are effective modalities but are time and resource intensive, difficult to access, and lack real time rendering. Single- and multi-line refreshable braille devices either lack functionality or are extremely cost prohibitive. Early computational models of mechanotransduction through complex digital skin tissue and the kinematics of the braille reading finger are explored as insight into device design specifications. A use-centered, convergence approach for future designs is discussed in which the design space is defined by both the end-user requirements and the available technology.

Abstract:We present a novel haptic and audio feedback device that allows blind and visually impaired (BVI) users to understand circuit diagrams. TangibleCircuits allows users to interact with a 3D printed tangible model of a circuit which provides audio tutorial directions while being touched. Our system comprises an automated parsing algorithm which extracts 3D printable models as well as an audio interfaces from a Fritzing diagram. To better understand the requirements of designing technology to assist BVI users in learning hardware computing, we conducted a series of formative inquiries into the accessibility limitations of current circuit tutorial technologies. In addition, we derived insights and design considerations gleaned from conducting a formal comparative user study to understand the effectiveness of TangibleCircuits as a tutorial system. We found that BVI users were better able to understand the geometric, spatial and structural circuit information using TangibleCircuits, as well as enjoyed learning with our tool.

Purpose – The purpose is to expand multimodal composition frameworks and practices to include tactile design and use of maker technologies, situated in a larger context of designing for equity and increasing access to picture books for children with visual impairments. Design – As part of the Build a Better Book project, we designed workshops to engage students in composing tactile books enhanced with sound and Braille for young children with visual impairments. Education undergraduates in a children's literature class crafted tactile retellings over a 2-session workshop, and high school students in an ELA class designed and fabricated 3D printed tactile books over several weeks. Findings – Both pre-service candidates and high school students developed awareness of the importance of inclusive, equity-oriented design of picture books, and especially for children with visual impairments. They collaborated in teams, developing design skills manipulating texture, shape, size and spatial arrangement to express their tactile retellings and enhanced meaning with sound. The high school students had more opportunity to build technical and computational thinking through their use of Makey Makey, Scratch, and TinkerCad. Practical Implications – Multimodal composition and making can be effectively integrated into pre-service candidates' literacy education, as well as high school English Language Arts, to develop multimodal communication and inclusive design skills and values. Success depends on interdisciplinary expertise (e.g., children's books, tactile design, making technologies, etc.), and sufficient access to physical and digital materials and tools.
When Refreshable Tactile Displays Meet Conversational Agents: Investigating Accessible Data Presentation and Analysis with Touch and Speech

Abstract:Despite the recent surge of research efforts to make data visualizations accessible to people who are blind or have low vision (BLV), how to support BLV people's data analysis remains an important and challenging question. As refreshable tactile displays (RTDs) become cheaper and conversational agents continue to improve, their combination provides a promising approach to support BLV people's interactive data exploration and analysis. To understand how BLV people would use and react to a system combining an RTD with a conversational agent, we conducted a Wizard-of-Oz study with 11 BLV participants, where they interacted with line charts, bar charts, and isarithmic maps. Our analysis of participants' interactions led to the identification of nine distinct patterns. We also learned that the choice of modalities depended on the type of task and prior experience with tactile graphics, and that participants strongly preferred the combination of RTD and speech to a single modality. In addition, participants with more tactile experience described how tactile images facilitated a deeper engagement with the data and supported independent interpretation. Our findings will inform the design of interfaces for such interactive mixed-modality systems.

Abstract:Journal of Visual Impairment &Blindness, Volume 117, Issue 6, Page 453-466, November–December 2023. Introduction: Informational graphics and data representations (e.g., charts and figures) are critical for accessing educational content. Novel technologies, such as the multimodal touchscreen which displays audio, haptic, and visual information, are promising for being platforms of diverse means to access digital content. This work evaluated educational graphics rendered on a touchscreen compared to the current standard for accessing graphical content. Method: Three bar charts and geometry figures were evaluated on student (N = 20) ability to orient to and extract information from the touchscreen and print. Participants explored the graphics and then were administered a set of questions (11–12 depending on graphic group). In addition, participants' attitudes using the mediums were assessed. Results: Participants performed statistically significantly better on questions assessing information orientation using the touchscreen than print for both bar chart and geometry figures. No statistically significant difference in information extraction ability was found between mediums on either graphic type. Participants responded significantly more favorably to the touchscreen than the print graphics, indicating them as more helpful, interesting, fun, and less confusing. Discussion: Accessing and orienting to information was highly successful by participants using the touchscreen, and was the preferred means of accessing graphical information when compared to the print image for both geometry figures and bar charts. This study highlights challenges in presenting graphics both on touchscreens and in print. Implications for Practitioners: This study offers preliminary support for the use of multimodal, touchscreen tablets as educational tools. Student ability using touchscreen-based graphics seems to be comparable to traditional types of graphics (large print and embossed, tactile graphics), although further investigation may be necessary for tactile graphic users. In summary, educators of students with blindness and visual impairments should consider ways to utilize new technologies, such as touchscreens, to provide more diverse access to graphical information.

Tactile Materials in Practice: Understanding the Experiences of Teachers of the Visually Impaired

Abstract:Teachers of the visually impaired (TVIs) regularly present tactile materials (tactile graphics, 3D models, and real objects) to students with vision impairments. Researchers have been increasingly interested in designing tools to support the use of tactile materials, but we still lack an in-depth understanding of how tactile materials are created and used in practice today. To address this gap, we conducted interviews with 21 TVIs and a 3-week diary study with eight of them. We found that tactile materials were regularly used for academic as well as non-academic concepts like tactile literacy, motor ability, and spatial awareness. Real objects and 3D models served as "stepping stones" to tactile graphics and our participants preferred to teach with 3D models, despite finding them difficult to create, obtain, and modify. Use of certain materials also carried social implications; participants selected materials that fostered student independence and allow classroom inclusion. We contribute design considerations, encouraging future work on tactile materials to enable student and TVI co-creation, facilitate rapid prototyping, and promote movement and spatial awareness. To support future research in this area, our paper provides a fundamental understanding of current practices. We bridge these practices to established pedagogical approaches and highlight opportunities for growth regarding this important genre of educational materials.

The Lewis Structure explorer: Accessible by Design

Abstract:Successfully learning principles from drawing Lewis Structures sets the foundation for understanding more complex representations of chemical concepts. As these visual-based concepts are core competencies in chemical pedagogies, it is incumbent and required for educational institutions and faculty to provide usable accommodations for all students, including those with blindness and low-vision (BLV). The shift to visually based interactive digital media increases the technical challenge for addressing accessibility for BLV students and makes creating these accommodations by faculty even more difficult. This technology report presents research and development for providing a digital learning system for Lewis Structures designed to be directly accessible by BLV students and other screen reader users. This Lewis Structure explorer can be used by all students and includes a form-driven keyboard accessible control panel. The alternative (alt) text for the structural representations is generated dynamically with user input. The results from two usability studies, one with over 300 sighted college students and the other with four BLV adults who depend on alt text for non-text information, are presented.

Accessible Point-and-Tap Interaction for Acquiring Detailed Information about Tactile Graphics and 3D Models

Abstract:We have devised a novel "Point-and-Tap" interface that enables people who are blind or visually impaired (BVI) to easily acquire multiple levels of information about tactile graphics and 3D models. The interface uses an iPhone's depth and color cameras to track the user's hands while they interact with a model. When the user points to a feature of interest on the model with their index finger, the system reads aloud basic information about that feature. For additional information, the user lifts their index finger and taps the feature again. This process can be repeated multiple times to access additional levels of information. For instance, tapping once on a region in a tactile map could trigger the name of the region, with subsequent taps eliciting the population, area, climate, etc. No audio labels are triggered unless the user makes a pointing gesture, which allows the user to explore the model freely with one or both hands. Multiple taps can be used to skip through information levels quickly, with each tap interrupting the current utterance. This allows users to reach the desired level of information more quickly than listening to all levels in sequence. Experiments with six BVI participants demonstrate that the approach is practical, easy to learn and effective.

Abstract:This paper discusses the use of Tangible User Interface (TUI) systems to bring about a new era in Chemistry Education. The concept of integrating tactile and visual sensory information in an intuitive learning environment is explored. This learning environment encourages greater participation, and motivation to learn. Specific learning scenarios have been illustrated to explain how this application could be deployed in a real world environment. The development of a game environment, Virtual Atomic Model (VAM), is proposed to assist students to advance their understanding of the basic fundamentals of Chemistry Science in a natural and easily comprehensible manner. Use of a TUI is envisaged as an effective means to take abstract Chemistry concepts and present them to the student in a straightforward and comprehensible manner. Two software development environments are discussed as options for the implementation of this educational game concept.
Enabling visually impaired people to learn three-dimensional tactile graphics with a 3DOF haptic mouse

Abstract:Background: In this work, we present a novel sensory substitution system that enables to learn three dimensional digital information via touch when vision is unavailable. The system is based on a mouse-shaped device, designed to jointly perceive, with one finger only, local tactile height and inclination cues of arbitrary scalar fields. The device hosts a tactile actuator with three degrees of freedom: elevation, roll and pitch. The actuator approximates the tactile interaction with a plane tangential to the contact point between the finger and the field. Spatial information can therefore be mentally constructed by integrating local and global tactile cues: the actuator provides local cues, whereas proprioception associated with the mouse motion provides the global cues. Methods: The efficacy of the system is measured by a virtual/real object-matching task. Twenty-four gender and age-matched participants (one blind and one blindfolded sighted group) matched a tactile dictionary of virtual objects with their 3D-printed solid version. The exploration of the virtual objects happened in three conditions, i.e., with isolated or combined height and inclination cues. We investigated the performance and the mental cost of approximating virtual objects in these tactile conditions. Results: In both groups, elevation and inclination cues were sufficient to recognize the tactile dictionary, but their combination worked at best. The presence of elevation decreased a subjective estimate of mental effort. Interestingly, only visually impaired participants were aware of their performance and were able to predict it. Conclusions: The proposed technology could facilitate the learning of science, engineering and mathematics in absence of vision, being also an industrial low-cost solution to make graphical user interfaces accessible for people with vision loss.
Electromagnetic actuation for a vibrotactile display: Assessing stimuli complexity and usability

Abstract:Sensory substitution has influenced the design of many tactile visual substitution systems with the aim of offering visual aids for the blind. This paper focuses on whether a novel electromagnetic vibrotactile display, a four by four vibrotactile matrix of taxels, can serve as an aid for dynamic communication for visually impaired people. A mixed methods approach was used to firstly assess whether pattern complexity affected undergraduate participants' perceptive success, and secondly, if participants total score positively correlated with their perceived success ratings. A thematic analysis was also conducted on participants' experiences with the vibrotactile display and what methods of interaction they used. The results indicated that complex patterns were less accurately perceived than simple and linear patterns respectively, and no significant correlation was found between participants' score and perceived success ratings. Additionally, most participants interacted with the vibrotactile display in similar ways using one finger to feel one taxel at a time; arguably, the most effective strategy from previous research. This technology could have applications to navigational and communication aids for the visually impaired and road users.

Refreshable Tactile Displays for Accessible Data Visualisation

Abstract:Refreshable tactile displays (RTDs) are predicted to soon become a viable option for the provision of accessible graphics for people who are blind or have low vision (BLV). This new technology for the tactile display of braille and graphics, usually using raised pins, makes it easier to generate and access a large number of graphics. However, it differs from existing tactile graphics in terms of scale, height and fidelity. Here, we share the perspectives of four key stakeholders -- blind touch readers, vision specialist teachers, accessible format producers and assistive technology providers -- to explore the potential uses, advantages and needs relating to the introduction of RTDs. We also provide advice on what role the data visualisation community can take to help ensure that people who are BLV are best able to benefit from the introduction of affordable RTDs.

Abstract:This article presents a novel portable one-hand Braille input system (BIS) to assist visually impaired users in entering text on electronic devices. The proposed BIS is designed based on a flexible Braille keyboard (FBK), it mainly consists of five dual-interlocked tactile sensors, a processing circuit, and a software modulus. The fully elastomeric graphene/carbon nanotube/ silicone rubber nanocomposites are synthesized and used as tactile sensing material and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the structural and encapsulation for the fabrication of sensors. Characterization tests showed the tactile sensor has relatively high force sensing sensitivity of 0.649 at sensing range of 0–5 N and a frequency sensing ability of 0.5–2.0 Hz, which can meet human finger pressing requirements. A specific Braille input method is proposed, and personalized parameters are set for users to fit different pressing habits. The average input speed of 3.37 words per minute (WPM) with an average accuracy of 92.2% for Braille characters input is demonstrated by evaluating text entry performance. The results indicated that our developed tactile sensor enabled portable one-hand BIS can assist visual impaired users with enhanced text entry on electronic devices effectively and privately.

Abstract:This paper presents a haptic stylus interface with a built-in compact tactile display module and an impact module as well as empirical studies on Braille, button, and texture display. We describe preliminary evaluations verifying the tactile display's performance indicating that it can satisfactorily represent Braille numbers for both the normal and the blind. In order to prove haptic feedback capability of the stylus, an experiment providing impact feedback mimicking the click of a button has been conducted. Since the developed device is small enough to be attached to a force feedback device, its applicability to combined force and tactile feedback display in a pen-held haptic device is also investigated. The handle of pen-held haptic interface was replaced by the pen-like interface to add tactile feedback capability to the device. Since the system provides combination of force, tactile and impact feedback, three haptic representation methods for texture display have been compared on surface with 3 texture groups which differ in direction, groove width, and shape. In addition, we evaluate its capacity to support touch screen operations by providing tactile sensations when a user rubs against an image displayed on a monitor.
