Abstract:Short-period exoplanets on circular orbits are thought to be tidally locked into synchronous rotation. If tidally locked, these planets must possess permanent day- and night-sides, with extreme irradiation on the dayside and none on the nightside. However, so far the tidal locking hypothesis for exoplanets is supported by little to no empirical evidence. Previous work showed that the super-Earth LHS 3844b likely has no atmosphere, which makes it ideal for constraining the planet's rotation. Here we revisit the Spitzer phase curve of LHS 3844b with a thermal model of an atmosphere-less planet and analyze the impact of nonsynchronous rotation, eccentricity, tidal dissipation, and surface composition. Based on the lack of observed strong tidal heating we rule out rapid nonsynchronous rotation (including a Mercury-like 3:2 spin–orbit resonance) and constrain the planet's eccentricity to less than ∼0.001 (more circular than Io's orbit). In addition, LHS 3844b's phase curve implies that the planet either still experiences weak tidal heating via a small-but-nonzero eccentricity (requiring an undetected orbital companion), or that its surface has been darkened by space weathering; of these two scenarios we consider space weathering more likely. Our results thus support the hypothesis that short-period rocky exoplanets are tidally locked, and further show that space weathering can significantly modify the surfaces of atmosphere-less exoplanets.

Day and Night: Habitability of Tidally Locked Planets with Sporadic Rotation

Abstract:Tidally locked worlds provide a unique opportunity for constraining the probable climates of certain exoplanets. They are unique in that few exoplanet spin and obliquity states are known or will be determined in the near future: both of which are critical in modeling climate. A recent study shows the dynamical conditions present in the TRAPPIST-1 system make rotation and large librations of the substellar point possible for these planets, which are usually assumed to be tidally locked. We independently confirm the tendency for planets in TRAPPIST-1-like systems to sporadically transition from tidally locked libration to slow rotation using N-body simulations. We examine the nature and frequency of these spin states to best inform energy balance models which predict the temperature profile of the planet's surface. Our findings show that tidally locked planets with sporadic rotation are able to be in both long-term persistent states and states with prolonged transient behavior: where frequent transitions between behaviors occur. Quasi-stable spin regimes, where the planet exhibits one spin behavior for up to hundreds of millennia, are likely able to form stable climate systems while the spin behavior is constant. 1D energy balance models show that tidally locked planets with sporadic rotation around M-dwarfs will experience a relatively small change in substellar temperature due to the lower albedo of ice in an infrared dominant stellar spectrum. The exact effects of large changes in temperature profiles on these planets as they rotate require more robust climate models, like 3D global circulation models, to better examine.

Abstract:We report the detection of a transiting super-Earth-sized planet (R= 1.39 ± 0.09R⊕) in a 1.4-day orbit around L 168-9 (TOI-134), a bright M1V dwarf (V= 11,K= 7.1) located at 25.15 ± 0.02 pc. The host star was observed in the first sector of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. For confirmation and planet mass measurement purposes, this was followed up with ground-based photometry, seeing-limited and high-resolution imaging, and precise radial velocity (PRV) observations using the HARPS andMagellan/PFS spectrographs. By combining the TESS data and PRV observations, we find the mass of L 168-9 b to be 4.60 ± 0.56M⊕and thus the bulk density to be 1.74−0.33+0.44times higher than that of the Earth. The orbital eccentricity is smaller than 0.21 (95% confidence). This planet is a level one candidate for the TESS mission’s scientific objective of measuring the masses of 50 small planets, and it is one of the most observationally accessible terrestrial planets for future atmospheric characterization.

Abstract:We report the first discovery of a thick-disk planet, LHS 1815b (TOI-704b, TIC 260004324), detected in the TESS survey. LHS 1815b transits a bright (V = 12.19 mag, K = 7.99 mag) and quiet M dwarf located $ 29.87\pm0.02 pc$ away with a mass of $0.502\pm0.015 M_{\odot}$ and a radius of $0.501\pm0.030 R_{\odot}$. We validate the planet by combining space and ground-based photometry, spectroscopy, and imaging. The planet has a radius of $1.088\pm 0.064 R_{\oplus}$ with a $3 \sigma$ mass upper-limit of $8.7 M_{\oplus}$. We analyze the galactic kinematics and orbit of the host star LHS1815 and find that it has a large probability ($P_{thick}/P_{thin} = 6482$) to be in the thick disk with a much higher expected maximal height ($Z_{max} = 1.8 kpc$) above the Galactic plane compared with other TESS planet host stars. Future studies of the interior structure and atmospheric properties of planets in such systems using for example the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), can investigate the differences in formation efficiency and evolution for planetary systems between different Galactic components (thick and thin disks, and halo).

Abstract:HIP 65426 hosts a young giant planet that has become the first exoplanet directly imaged with JWST. Using time-series photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), we classify HIP 65426 as a high-frequency δ Scuti pulsator with a possible large-frequency separation of Δν = 7.23 ± 0.02 cycles day −1 . We check the TESS data for pulsation-timing variations and use the nondetection to estimate a 95% dynamical mass upper limit of 12.8 M Jup for HIP 65426 b. We also identify a low-frequency region of signal that we interpret as stellar latitudinal differential rotation with two rapid periods of 7.85 ± 0.08 hr and 6.67 ± 0.04 hr. We use our TESS rotation periods together with published values of radius and v sin i to jointly measure the inclination of HIP 65426 to i ⋆ = 107 − 11 + 12 °. Our stellar inclination is consistent with the orbital inclination of HIP 65426 b ( 108 − 3 + 6 °) at the 68% percent level based on our orbit fit using published relative astrometry. The lack of significant evidence for spin–orbit misalignment in the HIP 65426 system supports an emerging trend consistent with preferential alignment between imaged long-period giant planets and their host stars.

Abstract:A rocky Earth-sized exoplanet with a temperate climate and relatively close to us? It seems too good to be true, but this is what Gliese 12 b could be. Simultaneously announced by Masayuki Kuzuhara, Akihiko Fukui and colleagues and by Shishir Dholakia, Larissa Palethorpe and colleagues in two papers published on the same day, Gliese 12 b promises to become a benchmark planet. Gliese 12 b's signal was first seen by the Transiting Exoplanets Survey Satellite (TESS), which observed its star — an M-dwarf only 12 parsecs away — between August and October 2021. The two teams employed an impressive array of other ground- and space-based telescopes to validate the planet's presence and refine its properties via adaptive optics imaging, photometry and spectroscopy. The datasets are in good mutual agreement, showing a 0.9–1.0 Earth radii planet, possibly slightly more massive than Earth (although the uncertainties are still large: Earth masses), orbiting in 12.76 days around its star. Its equilibrium temperature is 287 K assuming a terrestrial albedo, setting Gliese 12 b squarely in the temperate–warm regime and just inward of the classical 'habitable zone'.

Abstract:As exoplanet surveys reach ever-higher sensitivities and durations, planets analogous to the solar system giant planets are increasingly within reach. HD 28185 is a Sun-like star known to host a $m\sin i=6 M_J$ planet on an Earth-like orbit; more recently, a brown dwarf with a more distant orbit has been claimed. In this work we present a comprehensive reanalysis of the HD 28185 system, based on 22 years of radial velocity observations and precision Hipparcos-Gaia astrometry. We confirm the previous characterisation of HD 28185 b as a temperate giant planet, with its $385.92^{+0.06}_{-0.07}$ day orbital period giving it an Earth-like incident flux. In contrast, we substantially revise the parameters of HD 28185 c; with a new mass of $m=6.0\pm0.6 M_J$ we reclassify this companion as a super-jovian planet. HD 28185 c has an orbital period of $24.9^{+1.3}_{-1.1}$ years, a semi-major axis of $8.50^{+0.29}_{-0.26}$ AU, and a modest eccentricity of $0.15\pm0.04$, resulting in one of the most Saturn-like orbits of any known exoplanet. HD 28185 c lies at the current intersection of detection limits for RVs and direct imaging, and highlights how the discovery of giant planets at $\approx$10 AU separations is becoming increasingly routine.

Earth$'$s polar night boundary layer as an analogue for dark side inversions on synchronously rotating terrestrial exoplanets

Abstract:A key factor in determining the potential habitability of synchronously rotating planets is the strength of the atmospheric boundary layer inversion between the dark side surface and the free atmosphere. Here we analyse data obtained from polar night measurements at the South Pole and Alert Canada, which are the closest analogues on Earth to conditions on the dark sides of synchronously rotating exoplanets without and with a maritime influence, respectively. On Earth, such inversions rarely exceed 30 K in strength, because of the effect of turbulent mixing induced by phenomena such as so-called mesoscale slope winds, which have horizontal scales of 10s to 100s of km, suggesting a similar constraint to near-surface dark side inversions. We discuss the sensitivity of inversion strength to factors such as orography and the global-scale circulation, and compare them to a simulation of the planet Proxima Centauri b. Our results demonstrate the importance of comparisons with Earth data in exoplanet research, and highlight the need for further studies of the exoplanet atmospheric collapse problem using mesoscale and eddy-resolving models.

Abstract:The future of exoplanet science is bright, as Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ( TESS ) onceagain demonstrates with the discovery of its longest-period confirmed planet to date. Tidal obliquity evolution of potentially habitable planets

Abstract:Stellar insolation has been used as the main constraint on a planet's habitability. However, as more Earth-like planets are discovered around low-mass stars (LMSs), a re-examination of the role of tides on the habitability of exoplanets has begun. Those studies have yet to consider the misalignment between a planet's rotational axis and the orbital plane normal, i.e. the planetary obliquity. We apply two equilibrium tide theories to compute the obliquity evolution of terrestrial planets orbiting in the habitable zones around LMSs. The time for the obliquity to decrease from an Earth-like obliquity of 23.5 deg to 5 deg, the 'tilt erosion time', is compared to the traditional insolation habitable zone (IHZ) as a function of semi-major axis, eccentricity, and stellar mass. We also compute tidal heating and equilibrium rotation caused by obliquity tides. The Super-Earth Gl581d and the planet candidate Gl581g are studied as examples for tidal processes. Earth-like obliquities of terrestrial planets in the IHZ around <0.25 solar mass (M_sun) stars are eroded in <0.1 Gyr. Only terrestrial planets orbiting stars with masses >0.9 M_sun experience tilt erosion times larger than 1 Gyr throughout the IHZ. Terrestrial planets in the IHZ of stars with masses <0.25 M_sun undergo significant tidal heating due to obliquity tides. The predictions of the two tidal models diverge significantly for e>0.3. In our two-body simulations, Gl581d's obliquity is eroded to 0 and its rotation period reached its equilibrium state of half its orbital period in <0.1 Gyr. Tidal surface heating on the putative Gl581g is <150 mW/m^2 as long as its eccentricity is <0.3. Obliquity tides modify the concept of the habitable zone. Tilt erosion of terrestrial planets orbiting LMSs should be included by atmospheric modelers. Tidal heating needs to be considered by geologists.

Abstract:Abstract Planets occur most frequently around cool dwarfs, but only a handful of specific examples are known to orbit the latest-type M stars. Using TESS photometry, we report the discovery of two planets transiting the low-mass star called LP 791-18 (identified by TESS as TOI 736). This star has spectral type M6V, effective temperature 2960 K, and radius 0.17 R ⊙ , making it the third-coolest star known to host planets. The two planets straddle the radius gap seen for smaller exoplanets; they include a 1.1 R ⊕ planet on a 0.95 day orbit and a 2.3 R ⊕ planet on a 5 day orbit. Because the host star is small the decrease in light during these planets’ transits is fairly large (0.4% and 1.7%). This has allowed us to detect both planets’ transits from ground-based photometry, refining their radii and orbital ephemerides. In the future, radial velocity observations and transmission spectroscopy can both probe these planets’ bulk interior and atmospheric compositions, and additional photometric monitoring would be sensitive to even smaller transiting planets.

Habitability of extrasolar planets and tidal spin evolution

Abstract:Stellar radiation has conservatively been used as the key constraint to planetary habitability. We review here the effects of tides, exerted by the host star on the planet, on the evolution of the planetary spin. Tides initially drive the rotation period and the orientation of the rotation axis into an equilibrium state but do not necessarily lead to synchronous rotation. As tides also circularize the orbit, eventually the rotation period does equal the orbital period and one hemisphere will be permanently irradiated by the star. Furthermore, the rotational axis will become perpendicular to the orbit, i.e. the planetary surface will not experience seasonal variations of the insolation. We illustrate here how tides alter the spins of planets in the traditional habitable zone. As an example, we show that, neglecting perturbations due to other companions, the Super-Earth Gl581d performs two rotations per orbit and that any primordial obliquity has been eroded.

Abstract:Our knowledge of planets' orbital dynamics, which was based on Solar System studies, has been challenged by the diversity of exoplanetary systems. Around cool and ultra cool dwarfs, the influence of tides on the orbital and spin evolution of planets can strongly affect their climate and their capacity to host surface liquid water. We illustrate the role of tides and dynamics with the extreme case of planets orbiting around brown dwarfs. In multiple planet systems, the eccentricity is excited by planet-planet interactions. Planets are therefore heated up from the inside by the tidally-induced friction. This process can heat a habitable zone planet to such a level that surface liquid water cannot exist. We also talk about the newly discovered potentially habitable Earth-sized planet Kepler-186f. Given the poorly estimated age of the system, the planet could still be evolving towards synchronization and have a high obliquity or be pseudo-synchronized with a zero obliquity. These two configurations would have a different effect on the climate of this planet.

Abstract:Based on photometric observations by TESS, we present the discovery of a potential Venus analog transiting LHS 475, an M3 dwarf located 12.5 pc from the Sun. The mass of the star is 0.274 ± 0.015 M ☉ . The planet, originally reported as TOI 910.01, has an orbital period of 2.0291010 ± 0.0000017 days and an estimated radius of 0.975 ± 0.058 R ⊕ . We confirm the validity and source of the transit signal with MEarth and Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope ground-based follow-up photometry. We present radial velocity data from CHIRON that rule out massive companions. In accordance with the observed mass–radius distribution of exoplanets as well as planet formation theory, we expect this planetary companion to be terrestrial, with an estimated radial velocity semiamplitude of 1.1 m s −1 . LHS 475 b is likely too hot to be habitable but is a suitable candidate for emission and transmission spectroscopy.

Abstract:We report the discovery of an Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone of a low-mass star called Kepler-1649. The planet, Kepler-1649 c, is 1.06 times the size of Earth and transits its 0.1977 ± 0.0051 “mid” M-dwarf host star every 19.5 days. It receives 74% ± 3% the incident flux of Earth, giving it an equilibrium temperature of 234 ± 20 K and placing it firmly inside the circumstellar habitable zone. Kepler-1649 also hosts a previously known inner planet that orbits every 8.7 days and is roughly equivalent to Venus in size and incident flux. Kepler-1649 c was originally classified as a false positive (FP) by the Kepler pipeline, but was rescued as part of a systematic visual inspection of all automatically dispositioned Kepler FPs. This discovery highlights the value of human inspection of planet candidates even as automated techniques improve, and hints that terrestrial planets around mid to late M-dwarfs may be more common than those around more massive stars.
A Super-Earth Transiting a Naked-Eye Star

Abstract:We have detected transits of the innermost planet "e" orbiting 55 Cnc (V=6.0), based on two weeks of nearly continuous photometric monitoring with the MOST space telescope. The transits occur with the period (0.74 d) and phase that had been predicted by Dawson & Fabrycky, and with the expected duration and depth for the crossing of a Sun-like star by a hot super-Earth. Assuming the star's mass and radius to be 0.963_{-0.029}^{+0.051} M_sun and 0.943 +/- 0.010 R_sun, the planet's mass, radius, and mean density are 8.63 +/- 0.35 Mearth, 2.00 +/- 0.14 Rearth, and 5.9_{-1.1}^{+1.5} g/cm^3. The mean density is comparable to that of Earth, despite the greater mass and consequently greater compression of the interior of 55 Cnc e. This suggests a rock-iron composition supplemented by a significant mass of water, gas, or other light elements. Outside of transits, we detected a sinusoidal signal resembling the expected signal due to the changing illuminated phase of the planet, but with a full range (168 +/- 70 ppm) too large to be reflected light or thermal emission. This signal has no straightforward interpretation and should be checked with further observations. The host star of 55 Cnc e is brighter than that of any other known transiting planet, which will facilitate future investigations.
