Abstract:We present a study about information disclosure in phase-truncation-based cryptosystems. The main information of the original image to be encoded can be obtained by using a decryption key in the worst case. The problem cannot be thoroughly solved by imaginary part truncating, keeping the encryption keys as private keys, or applying different phase keys for different plaintexts during each encryption process as well as the phase modulation in the frequency domain. In order to eliminate the risk of unintended information disclosure, we further propose a nonlinear spatial and spectral encoding technique using a random amplitude mask (RAM). The encryption process involving two security layers can be fully controlled by a RAM. The spatial encoding of the plaintext images and the simultaneous encryption of the plaintext images and the encryption key greatly enhance the security of system, avoiding several attacks that have cracked the phase-truncation-based cryptosystems. Besides, the hybrid encryption system retains the advantage of a trap door one-way function of phase truncation. Numerical results have demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed encryption algorithm. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The classical double random phase encoding technique (DRPE) is vulnerable to chosen ciphertext attacks, known-plaintext attacks and chosen-plaintext attacks for its linearity. In order to avoid the disadvantages originated from the linearity and symmetric, an improved method for multiple-image encryption based on nonlinear operations in Fourier domain is proposed. The random phase masks (RPMs) for encryption and additive keys which are determined by the original images and generated by the nonlinear operations in encryption process, are necessary for image decoding. As a result of the nonlinear operations, the increase in the number of keys, removal of linearity and high robustness could be achieved in this cryptosystem. Computer simulations are presented to demonstrate its good performance, and the security is analyzed as well.

Abstract:The asymmetric cryptosystem, which is based on phase-truncated Fourier transforms (PTFTs), can break the linearity of conventional systems. However, it has been proven to be vulnerable to a specific attack based on iterative Fourier transforms when the two random phase masks are used as public keys to encrypt different plaintexts. An improvement from the asymmetric cryptosystem may be taken by relocating the amplitude values in the output plane. In this paper, two different methods are adopted to realize the amplitude modulation of the output image. The first one is to extend the PTFT-based asymmetrical cryptosystem into the anamorphic fractional Fourier transform domain directly, and the second is to add an amplitude mask in the Fourier plane of the encryption scheme. Abstract:A discussion and a cryptanalysis of the optical phase-truncated Fourier-transform-based cryptosystem are presented in this paper. The concept of an optical asymmetric cryptosystem, which was introduced into the optical image encryption scheme based on phase-truncated Fourier transforms in 2010, is suggested to be retained in optical encryption. A new method of attack is also proposed to simultaneously obtain the main information of the original image, the two decryption keys from its cyphertext, and the public keys based on the modified amplitude-phase retrieval algorithm. The numerical results illustrate that the computing efficiency of the algorithm is improved and the number of iterations is much less than that by the specific attack, which has two iteration loops. Abstract:In this paper, the security strength of a double-image cryptosystem using spatial encoding and phase-truncation Fourier transforms (PTFTs) is evaluated. Unlike the conventional PTFT-based cryptosystem, where two random phase masks (RPMs) are used as public keys to provide enough phase constrains in the estimation, in the improved cryptosystem, the RPM generated by a random amplitude mask (RAM) is treated as an unknown parameter. Due to this fixed RAM, the number of constraints in the estimation decreases to achieve high robustness against potential iterative attacks. Moreover, instead of two phase-only masks (POMs), here the two POMs and the RAM are utilized as the private keys in the improved cryptosystem; thus, the key space of the double-image cryptosystem has been enlarged. However, we noticed that the RAM used to encode plaintexts spatially and to generate the phase encryption key is independent of the plaintexts. This could be recovered by a known pair of plaintexts and the ciphertext. Once the information of the RAM is retrieved, the phase key RPM can also be produced making the cryptosystem vulnerable. Based on this finding, new hybrid algorithms, including a known-plaintext attack and a known key attack are proposed to crack the enhanced PTFT-based cryptosystem. The information of the plaintexts can be retrieved from one POM using the proposed algorithms without any knowledge of another POM and the corresponding ciphertext. Numerical simulations have been carried out to validate the information disclosure problem still exists in the double-image cryptosystem based on spatial encoding and PTFTs.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to propose an asymmetric double-image encryption scheme based on phase masks computed by elliptic curve cryptography. A hybrid gyrator Hartley transform augmented with an elliptic curve phase mask is used in this scheme to enhance security. Two new public decryption keys are created by encrypting the plain text with two-stage phase keys. A public key is generated during an encryption process, whereas a private key is generated before the encryption process begins. In addition to introducing nonlinearity, it enhances the security of the system. As part of the encryption operation, plain text keys are unscrambled. The system is also more resistant to selective plaintext attacks, and the decryption keys are more sensitive. Trimming the phase expands the room for the key the confidentiality of cryptography systems. An estimation of the error between the image input and the image retrieved is used to determine the effectiveness of the cryptosystem. Various potential attacks can be mitigated by the proposed technique that provides innumerable security keys. The effectiveness and security of the proposed technique are verified by numerical simulations. In order to validate and evaluate the proposed solution's viability, strength, experimental results and security analysis are presented.

Abstract:We propose a novel method for multiple-image encryption using a phase retrieve algorithm and intermodulation in the Fourier domain. All plaintexts to be encoded are first encoded separately into a phase-only function in the Fourier domain with the help of the phase retrieve algorithm. Then these phase-only functions serve mutually as the second encryption keys to be intermodulated into a single image. As a result, all plaintexts can be extracted from the ciphertext without any cross-talk and the encrypted capacity is nearly unlimited. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are demonstrated by numerical results.

Abstract:We propose a method to encrypt two covert images into an overt image based on phase-truncated Fourier transforms and phase retrieval. In this method, the two original images are self-encoded in the manner that one of the two images is directly separated into two phase masks (PMs) and used as keys for encryption, and then multiplied by a PM which is generated by using phase retrieval algorithm. At last, the whole encryption process is completed by a Fourier transform operation. In the decryption process, the image without a separation and the two PMs used as keys for encryption are all treated as encoded data. The cryptosystem is asymmetric which means the keys for encryption are different from those for decryption. Numerical simulations are presented to show the viability and good performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:Recently, a new chaotic image encryption technique was proposed based on multiple discrete dynamic maps. The authors claim that the scheme can provide excellent privacy for traditional digital images. However, in order to minimize the computational cost, the encryption scheme adopts one-round encryption and a traditional permutation-diffusion structure. Through cryptanalysis, there is no strong correlation between the key and the plain image, which leads to the collapse of cryptosystem. Based on this, two methods of chosen-plaintext attacks are proposed in this paper. The two methods require 3 pairs and 258 pairs of plain and cipher images, respectively, to break the original encryption system. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the two schemes.

Abstract:This study creatively introduces a class of adaptive Fourier decomposition (AFD) techniques into the field of image encryption, where AFD and its variants are newly developed signal decomposition methods. The novelty of this article is twofold. First, we use three different AFD techniques, including Core AFD, Unwinding AFD, and Cyclic AFD, to generate two key streams through decomposing a source image. The two key streams generated by different AFD algorithms are different and aperiodic, which can effectively improve the security of encryption algorithm. Furthermore, this work also proposes a novel encryption method that implements the confusion and diffusion operations by index-sorted mapping method and pixel swapping operation based on two generated key streams, respectively. To ensure that the image is fully scrambled, both pixel-level and bit-level permutations are performed, which employs a novel bilateral sequence diffusion method to change the image pixel distribution based on pixel swap operations. The cryptographic performance of the scheme is evaluated through various security analyses, including key sensitivity, statistical, entropy, clipping attack, and differential attack analysis. Experimental results confirm that the proposed image encryption scheme ensures a high level of security and exhibits superior performance in resisting various attacks compared with several traditional and state-of-the-art image encryption methods.

Abstract:A nonlinear color and grayscale images cryptosystem based on phase-truncated fractional Fourier transform and optical superposition principle is proposed. In order to realize simultaneous encryption of color and grayscale images, each grayscale image is first converted into two phase masks by using an optical coherent superposition, one of which is treated as a part of input information that will be fractional Fourier transformed while the other in the form of a chaotic random phase mask (CRPM) is used as a decryption key. For the purpose of optical performance, all the processes are performed through three channels, i.e., red, green, and blue. Different from most asymmetric encryption methods, the decryption process is designed to be linear for the sake of effective decryption. The encryption level of a double random phase encryption based on phase-truncated Fourier transform is enhanced by extending it into fractional Fourier domain and the load of the keys management and transmission is lightened by using CRPMs. The security of the proposed cryptosystem is discussed and computer simulation results are presented to verify the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:We propose a novel technique for multi-image encryption and hiding scheme under optical asymmetric frame work using structured fingerprint phase masks in the gyrator transform domain and three-step phase-shifting digital holography. A structured fingerprint phase mask contains the unique features of fingerprint and structured phase of optical vortex beam, which provides higher security in the cryptosystem. In order to perform the encryption of multiple images, gyrator transform based phase truncation and phase reservation technique has been used in the first level of security whereas three step phase-shifting digital holography has been used to obtain the final ciphertext. This ciphertext is embedded in the host image to perform the watermarking process. In this process, the host is further decomposed into three parts in which anyone from the last two parts can be used for watermark embedding whereas first part is stored as key. The use of polar decomposition in the watermarking process provides additional layer for security. Numerical simulation and experimental results have been presented to support the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Iris image encryption is a significant research area in the field of image security. With the increasing use of iris biometric recognition technology in various applications, it is crucial to ensure the confidentiality, authenticity, and integrity of iris template images. In this paper, a novel multiple image encryption scheme using the QZ synthesis algorithm, chaotic umbrella maps, and unequal modulus decomposition algorithm in the hybrid transform domain is proposed. The proposed mechanism is non-linear and asymmetric in nature. The phase masks for encryption are generated using non-linear modified Gerchberg–Saxton phase retrieval algorithm, making the system resistant to chosen plaintext attacks, known plaintext attacks, and special attack. The use of the QZ synthesis algorithm provides a single channel encrypted image as output from multiple iris input images. Umbrella chaotic map algorithm is utilized for scrambling the pixels of the image. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed encryption scheme provides a high level of security for encrypting multiple iris images simultaneously. MATLAB based simulations are conducted to validate and verify the performance of the proposed mechanism in terms of statistical analysis, key sensitivity analysis and attack analysis. The scheme has good efficacy and effectiveness against noise attacks, classical and special attacks along with higher sensitivity to various keys and parameters.

Abstract:Images contain wealth of visual information, are susceptible to unauthorized access due to their vulnerability and sensitivity. This paper designs a novel multi-image encryption scheme for privacy protection of different sizes and types of images. Initially, a 2D memristive hyperchaotic map (2D-MHM) is designed and subjected to various dynamic analyses and randomness evaluations, the results demonstrate that proposed map possesses an exceptionally large parameter space, high Lyapunov exponent and sample entropy, and has successfully passes the entire suite of NIST tests, verifying its feasibility for confidential communication. Then we present a multi-image encryption scheme combining cross-plane coupling permutation and plain-by-plain wave diffusion to realize randomly exchange and globally vary of pixels in different planes. The performance evaluation and numerical analysis demonstrate that the scheme is resilient against multi-farious types of attacks, possesses distinguished security while effectively enhancing encryption efficiency. Finally, the proposed scheme is compared with advanced algorithms, exhibiting its superiority in multiple aspects.

Abstract:Multiplexing techniques can store multiple wavefront information of object beams in one hologram, which is a way to realize multi-image encryption. In this paper, an optical multi-image encryption method based on Kramers-Kronig multiplexing digital holography is proposed. In the encryption process, multiple images are subjected to Fresnel diffraction at a certain distance and modulated by a random phase mask. The modulated images then interfere with the reference beam and form a noise-like compound ciphertext. In the decryption process, the information of the original images can be extracted directly from the positive frequency part of the spectrum. Compared to the traditional image encryption based on off-axis digital holography, this method enables the decryption of images in the case of spectrum overlap. The feasibility of our proposed method is demonstrated through numerical simulations, which provide a novel approach for the field of multi-image encryption based on digital holography.

Abstract:Recently, Patro et al. proposed a multiple gray-scale image encryption scheme based on cross-coupled chaotic maps. The authors claimed the scheme could withstand known plain-text attacks and chosen-plaintext attacks. In this paper, we have thoroughly analysed the Patro et al. algorithm and reported the crucial loopholes. Patro et al. algorithm uses a row-wise and column-wise scrambling operation based on a secret sequence followed by a feed-forward XOR operation generating the cipher image. Exploiting the loopholes of feed-forward XOR operation and high correlation of pixels in standard images, a cryptanalysis algorithm is developed that deciphers the ciphered images generated by Patro et al. algorithm based on cipher-text only attack. Without using the secret keys, the proposed cryptanalysis algorithm successfully deciphers the cipher image and reveals the secret images.

Abstract:An advanced iterative phase retrieval algorithm is applied to perform a ciphertext-only attack on the fractional Fourier transform-based double random phase encryption system. With the given complex amplitude of ciphertext and definite support of the object image, the original object image can be recovered by estimating the energy of support area in the recovered image. The encryption system can be attacked by analyzing the sensibility of fractional Fourier transform order keys and evaluating the energy of the object image support area. The proposed algorithm can obtain encrypted fractional order and retrieve two random phase keys. Numerical results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed attacking method.

Abstract:This work reports an optical double-image crosstalk free encryption scheme that employs equal modulus decomposition and random masks. For the encryption, two plaintexts by a random amplitude mask and a random phase mask have been encrypted into a single ciphertext mask and two private key masks. Owing to the two random masks introduced, the functional relation between the plaintext pair and the ciphertext indirectly cause the paucity of constraints employed for the specific attack. Unlike the traditional phase-truncation-based techniques, this scheme is immune to the information leakage and different types of attacks. Furthermore, the three different diffraction distances and the illuminating wavelength also function as four additional keys to significantly reinforce the security. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposal.

Abstract:Recently, an image encryption scheme based on a compound chaotic sequence was proposed. In this paper, the security of the scheme is studied and the following problems are found: (1) a differential chosen-plaintext attack can break the scheme with only three chosen plain-images; (2) there is a number of weak keys and some equivalent keys for encryption; (3) the scheme is not sensitive to the changes of plain-images; and (4) the compound chaotic sequence does not work as a good random number resource.

Abstract:To enhance the efficiency and security of optical encryption systems, we propose a novel optical multi-image encryption scheme based on chaotic fingerprint phase mask (CFPM) and multi-slice diffractive imaging in this paper. Multiple original images are initially arranged along the axial direction with a fixed interval between each image, forming a multi-slice object. Then, under the illumination of different speckle patterns, the multi-slice object is encrypted into a series of noise-like diffractive patterns using the CFPMs placed at different free-space propagation distances. The original images can be recovered by employing the iterative phase retrieval algorithm along with the correct decryption keys. Notably, the CFPMs are generated by the fingerprint and chaotic Henon map, which are only used as interim variables. The fingerprint and chaotic parameters are used directly as secret keys. This approach offers improved convenience for key storage and management. Moreover, fingerprints possess are inherently unique and have a strong connection to the user, significantly enhances the overall security of the encryption scheme. Additionally, the encryption scheme benefits from the additional security provided by the illumination pattern and the free-space propagation distance. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the high security of the proposed scheme.
