Three-Phase-Based Approach to Develop a River Health Prediction and Early Warning System to Guide River Management

Abstract:To effectively manage a river system, systematic tracking and diagnosing the change and risks of a river system are essentially required to efficiently conserve or restore its conditions. Hence, this study focuses on how to integrate current status assessment, trend prediction, and cause diagnosis in river health to guide early warning decision-making in river protection and management. This study has presented a three-phase approach by coupling spatial with nonspatial information in a highly systematic and reliable way, and an early warning system has been designed. In phase I, the current health status is assessed and nowcasted by using the order degree of each indicator. In phase II, health predictors, including the single perspective-based health index (HI) (e.g., water quality index (WQI) and index of biotic integrity (IBI)) and multi-perspective-based health index, have been forecasted under normal conditions or emerging conditions using predictive models. In phase III, key causal factors threatening the river health have been identified to enable early notification and to address unexpected events before occurrence. Although different modeling methods can be used in each phase to demonstrate this concept, we tested the model of partial least square regression (PLSR) associated with time series. Additionally, the three-phase approach has been integrated with geographic information system (GIS) and a decision support system (DSS) to develop a river health prediction and early warning system (RHP-EWS), an automatic prediction and decision-making tool. This tool was implemented to deal with the landing of typhoon “Maria” in 2018 into the Shanxi River watershed in China. Because of the timely responses and decisions, the drinking water supply was not influenced. However, the models should be extended to other river systems for testing and improvement at different temporal or spatial scales.
Optimizing Operation Rules of Sluices in River Networks Based on Knowledge-driven and Data-driven Mechanism

Abstract:Many river networks are controlled by sluices, especially in plain area. To prevent potential floods, maintain water level, and improve water environment in the inner river, the water transfer of river networks is needed and executed often in terms of optimized operation rules of sluices planned in advancing. To guarantee maintaining the optimized operation status, the provision of appropriate operating framework of sluices in river networks is necessary and presented in this study based on the knowledge-driven and data-driven mechanism. The general framework is formed by River Networks Mathematical Model (RNMM), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Genetic Algorithms (GA), in which, ANN is used to build a rapid simulation of the flow variables in river networks, RNMM is used to train the ANN model, and GA method, whose fitness function is constructed by the ANN model, is used to optimize the operation rules of sluices. As a demonstration, the framework was applied to water transfer project of the tidal river networks locating in Pudong New Area of Shanghai in mainland China. Firstly, RNMM of Pudong was built and validated according to observed data during water transfer tests. Then, the Backward Propagation Neural Networks (BPNN) model was established as the fast simulation tool of flow variables of river networks through the numerical experiments with RNMM. The Generalized Genetic Algorithms (GGA) was recommended as optimization algorithm of sluices operation rules. Through comparing the optimization results with the RNMM simulation outputs under eight cases, it is verified that the framework can offer sub-optimal operation rules of sluices in river networks and present excellent speediness, robustness and flexibility. It is encouraged to be applied to more complicated, practical problems.
Neural Network Models of Maximum Fluctuation of Water Surface in Ship Lift Chamber with Tumble Gate Operating

Abstract:On the basis of network training, neural network computing models of maximum fluctuation of water surface in ship lift chamber with tumble gate operating (NNCM-MFWS-SLC-TGO) were built through the principle of artificial neural networks. The characteristics of the models were tested according to the experiment data from Yantan Ship Lift and Three Gorges Ship Lift. And the result indicates that the models may be applied to forecast maximum water level fluctuation in ship lift chamber with tumble gate operating. Furthermore, a new way and method about the study on ship lift chamber hydrodynamics were provided.
Study on intelligent operation aided decision-making model of sluices in river networks

Abstract:For improving sluices' functions adequately,an intelligent operation aided decision-making model of sluices in river networks was presented in this paper through artificial neural networks(ANN) and river networks unsteady flow mathematical model,to achieve intelligent control of sluiles which is a key problem of integrated management of sluices in river networks.Its basic framework consists of sluices operation model based ANN and numerical simulation model of unsteady flow in river networks.The sluices operation model is used to output operation plan and the mathematical model is used to provide operation cases and to check operation plan.This intelligent operation aided decision-making model of sluices in river networks was applied successfully to Pudong New Area's river networks in Shanghai City.Investigation results indicated that the model can satisfy well the requirement of sluices' intelligent operation,provides a new idea for intelligent control and decision-making support of sluices in continental river networks.

Abstract:The riverbed evolution of upper part of Yangtze estuary, Chengtong reach, is analyzed by comparison of 6 sets of bathymetry data during 1977~2011. The significant changes of water depth profiles along 6 representative cross-sections indicate the reach is still in the process of development. In order to get a better understanding of the effect of river discharge at upstream on the riverbed evolution of Chengtong reach, a series of numerical experiments are implemented by specifying different river discharge conditions at the upper boundary. The corresponding discharge ratio at main sub-reaches is compared to reveal the response of the riverbed evolution to the hydrodynamic changes at upstream. The results show that with the increase of river discharge, the discharge ratio in the main channels of Fujiangsha sub-reach and Rugaosha sub-reach increases, but it changes to decrease when the upstream river discharge becomes very large; however, the discharge ratio in the main channel of Tongzhousha sub-reach always decreases with the increase of river discharge at upstream.
Application of 1-D mathematical model of lower river networks

Abstract:The lower river networks often connect the upstream and downstream of navigation routes,and the river flood discharges have to pass from the upstream to the river networks.This makes the research on the flow in lower river networks one of the most important and necessary researches.In this paper,the authors first review and summarize the methods for the river networks;then,apply the self established 1-D hydrodynamic program,namely "hydrodynamic model for river networks",and the 1-D commercial software "HEC-RAS" to the lower Ganjiang River networks,separately;and calculate and analyze the flow in the flooding season,normal water period and dry season in lower Ganjiang river networks.In the flooding season,water surface is derived from the model to identify the major site of water level as a warning level,when the water level is close to the site warning level or has the trend to become close to the warning water level.At this point,the department concerned should prevent floods to reduce loss.In the normal water period,the effects made by dominant discharge should be considered.In the dry season,the water level at the main site according to the calculation of the model is considered to be the of lowest navigable level for the dry season.It can provide the basis for the smooth navigation.
Improvements and application of 1D river network transient flow model with Junction Water Stage Iteration Method

Abstract:This paper introduces a one-dimensional numerical model developed for simulation of transient flow in river networks. The Junction Water Stage Iteration Method (JWSIM) is applied to deal with coupling relations between branches, with which there is no irregular sparse system of equations and no need for special branch numbering scheme. The convergence of JWSIM is discussed through theoretical characteristic analysis, taking prismatic channel with rectangular cross section for example. Some improvements of the model for practice are described, including supercritical and transcritical correction, small depth correction and dry bed modification. The model is applied to a complex river network system which connects the Yangtze River and Dongting Lake in Hunan province of China. The results show the model's good performance, even in the situation when some branches are dried-up. Agreement between calculated and observed data shows that the proposed model is reliable, which implies its prospects for application to transient flow simulation in complex river networks. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Abstract:Internet of Things (IOT) technology will change the situation,incomplete monitoring information,low transmission efficiency and computing speed,which water resources regulation is facing to,and lay a solid foundation for the dramatic breakthrough of water resources regulation for river basin.Taking application of IOT as a starting point,the paper sums up the characteristics and requirements of water resources regulation for river basin and its existing problems,and discusses the relationship between it and IOT.With the purpose of ensuring securing for flood control,water supply,ecology,energy,shipping and project,the paper proposes IOT feature-based intelligent regulation technology architecture for river basin,and studies key technologies used in it,such as intelligent sensing,simulation,diagnosis,early warning,regulation,disposition,control,integrated command platform,data processing and operation and maintenance,et al.Finally,based on IOT technology,the "Smart Basin" concept is given under consideration on the development trend of information explosion process and construction of Digital River.
Enhanced physics‐informed neural networks for efficient modelling of hydrodynamics in river networks

Abstract:This study optimizes physics‐informed neural networks (PINNs) for hydrodynamic modelling in real river systems, achieving a 91.67% increase in training speed with pre‐training integration and mitigating vanishing gradients using layer normalization. Incorporating unique constraints on water levels and junctions, it enriches physical understanding and training efficacy. Tested against HEC‐RAS benchmarks, our method predicts river hydrodynamics with less data and greater time step flexibility, establishing our enhanced PINNs as an efficient solution for complex river network modelling. This article enhances the physics‐informed neural networks (PINNs) method to effectively model the hydrodynamics of real‐world river networks with irregular cross‐sections. First, we pre‐process hydraulic parameters to optimize training speed without compromising accuracy, achieving a 91.67% acceleration compared with traditional methods. To address the vanishing gradient problem, layer normalization is also incorporated into the architecture. We also introduce novel physical constraints—water level range and junction node equations—to ensure effective training convergence and enrich the model with additional physical insights. Two practical case studies using HEC‐RAS benchmarks demonstrate that our improved PINN method can predict river network hydrodynamics with less data and is less sensitive to time step size, allowing for longer computational time steps. Incorporating physical knowledge, our enhanced PINN methodology emerges as an efficient and promising avenue for modelling the complexities of hydrodynamic processes in natural river networks.

Abstract:A precise and thorough understanding of tide-river interactions holds practical significance for estuarine management and the sustainable utilization of water resources, particularly in the context of saltwater intrusion. Previous research on tide-river interactions has been limited by a lack of measured discharge stations in the upper and lower reaches of the river, especially in the tide-river transitional zone, leading to assumptions that streamflow from upstream river is representative of streamflow in the transition zone. In addition, the differences between simulated and measured discharges in revealing tide-river interactions are poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we employed the hydrodynamic model MIKE21 to simulate downstream river discharge as well as the cross wavelet transform (XWT) and stage-discharge rating curves to reveal the internal relationship between the simulated discharge (SD), measured water level, and tidal range. We applied this approach to the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE), a large tide river, and found compelling results. Notably, near tide-river transitional zone, where the river discharge may differ significantly from the measured upstream discharge. For instance, in Jiangyin, the maximum error of the SD was equal to approximately 15% of the measured Datong discharge (MDD), which may be caused by industrial and agricultural water use. Additionally, the use of XWT and the stage-discharge rating curve allowed us to accurately identify the positions of the river-dominated region, tide-dominated region, and tide-river transitional zone. Particularly in the upstream and downstream of Jiangyin, the R 2 of the stage-discharge rating curve varied significantly. The R 2 in the upstream of Jiangyin is above 0.9, while the R 2 in the downstream of Jiangyin is generally below 0.4. XWT results indicated that there is a strong significant resonance period (SRP) between the SD and the tidal range and water level in the downstream of Jiangyin, while the SRP in the upstream is weaker. Our findings underscore the necessity of conducting discharge measurements in the transitional zone and tide-dominated region to gain precise insights into tide-river interactions. This work may serve as a useful reference for further investigations into tide-river interactions in estuaries across the globe.

Abstract:The north-south channel bifurcation key control system of the deep-water channel in the Yangtze estuary which consists of New Liuhe shoal protection project and Nanshatou passage way limited flow project is not only a river control system,but also an important step of the deep water channel gradually extending to Nanjing.Management ideas and the research course of this system are discussed,and its effect is analysed based on the measured data before and after the project.It is hoped that the contents could be referential for the similar projects.

Abstract:River regulation and training have been performed for various purposes. River harness projects not only bring economic benefit but also result in negative impact. In some cases the negative impact is so serious that people have to consider to 'recovery' these rivers. It is found that the integration of use and change of the river and its ecosystem by integrated river management is a better option. Based on case studies and literatures both home and abroad, discussions are made on the concept of integrated river management and orientation of river training. It is suggested that integrated river management should 1) taking the watershed, upper stream basin including the tributaries, middle and lower reaches and the estuary as an integrated part in water resources planning, design and management; and 2) mitigating or controlling the negative impacts on river hydrological system, riverbed evolution, environment and ecosystem of water development activities, flood control and power generation.
Timing of River Capture in Major Yangtze River Tributaries: Insights from Sediment Provenance and Morphometric Indices

Abstract:The eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau represents one of the morphologically most active regions on Earth, where the interplay of recent crustal deformation and subsequent fluvial landscape adjustment has affected the course of continental-scale rivers by river piracy events. Based solely on field observations, such an event has been hypothesised for two of the largest tributaries of the Yangtze River: the Jialing and Hanjiang Rivers. To test this hypothesis, we employ a novel combination of independent methods including a provenance study based on age distributions of detrital zircons from both modern riverbeds and river terraces and a morphometric analysis of river channels and drainage divides. We supported the morphometric analysis with a time-dependent numerical model describing the evolution of river channel long profiles and drainage divides in a succession of river capture events. Analysed zircon ages show clearly distinguishable distributions for the modern Jialing and Hanjiang Rivers, but similar distributions for the recent Hanjiang River up to its topmost terraces. This suggests that the capture of the Hanjiang headwaters by the Jialing River is unlikely to have taken place during the last 1.2 million years. However, several knickpoints in the main stem and the tributaries of the Jialing River cluster at an elevation of about 900 m and separate steeper (downstream) from less steep channel segments (upstream), which is consistent with the morphological expression of a major capture event. chi mapping indicates drainage divide asymmetry at catchment scale with on average steeper rivers on the Jialing side, whereas Gilbert metrics show a symmetric divide at hillslope scale. This numerical model explains this apparent contradiction by the travel time of capture-related knickpoints from the capture point towards the watershed, where chi mapping indicates divide asymmetry immediately after the river capture, while Gilbert metrics are only affected as soon as the knickpoints reach the channel heads and the divide effectively starts moving. Based on knickpoint travel distances and constraints on regional incision / uplift rates, we estimate the possible date of river capture to be the Pliocene. This is earlier than the formation of the terraces investigated in the provenance study but recent enough that most of the drainage divides are still unaffected and currently almost stable. Only the wind gap located in the almost dry valley connecting the two competing drainage systems is likely to have shifted towards the Hanjiang side. We suggest that this resulted in the capture of another important tributary of the Hanjiang River (the Heishui River) by the Jialing drainage system. Our results illustrate the complex evolution of drainage networks along the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, and highlight the importance for combining provenance and morphometric analyses in regions of active landscape rejuvenation where river captures are likely to occur. Abstract:Abstract River systems play an important role in the development of human society. However, they have been significantly affected by human activities, reducing the capacity for water supply, flood regulation, and aquatic ecosystem services. Identifying changes in river systems and hydrological responses to these changes is crucial for regional water management. In this study, based on the data derived from topographic maps of the 1960s, 1980s, and 2010s, we comprehensively quantified changes in river systems of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China. The results show that the density of rivers and the proportion of water surface decreased over the past several decades, while changes in the evolutionary coefficient of rivers and the ratio of area to length of rivers exhibited clear spatial differences. Low-grade rivers in urbanized areas have declined severely, leading to a simplification of river structure. Furthermore, the hydrological response to changes in the river system was revealed in the Taihu Lake Plain, an area of the YRD with a plain river network. A longitudinal functional connectivity index ( LFCI ) was adopted to assess the hydrological dynamics in water level, and it was found to have an increasing trend. In addition, the specific storage capacity ( SSC ) and the specific regulation capacity ( SRC ) were established to reveal the impact of changes in the structure and connectivity of the river system on the regulation and storage capacity, and both indicators exhibited a downward trend. Simulations based on the MIKE 11 model show that the reduction of tributaries across the region can result in an earlier peak timing and higher peak water level. Our results can support the development of river system protection and flood adaptation strategies in the delta plains.
Capturing the attenuating influence of a Three Gorges Dam on downstream sediment loads using artificial neural networks

Abstract:River sediment dynamics have been significantly altered by dam constructions, with the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) on the Yangtze River being a prominent example. This study aims to quantitatively assess the attenuating impact of TGD operations on downstream sediment discharge using artificial neural network (ANN) models. Seven ANN models were developed for stations along the middle and lower Yangtze River, trained on measured water and sediment data. The models effectively captured the relationships between upstream inputs and downstream outputs. Results revealed that variations in sediment discharge at each station were predominantly influenced by changes in sediment input from its immediate upstream section, rather than by changes in water discharge. This suggests that the TGD's impact on downstream sediment transport was primarily due to its sediment trapping efficiency, rather than alterations in the hydrological regime. The influence diminished gradually farther downstream, attributed to tributary contributions and sediment transport dynamics. ANNs, adept at handling input uncertainties, underscore the importance of boundary conditions; the integration of data-driven and physics-based models illuminates sediment dynamics in regulated rivers. This approach provides insight into dam management implications and sediment transport processes.

Research on Flood Routing in the River Network Between Jingjiang River and Dongting Lake

Abstract:A large-scale complex river-net system was formed between the Jingjiang River and the Dongting Lake.In this paper,a mathematical model for flood routing between the Jingjiang River and Dongting Lake was established by the explicit finite volume method.The measured data of 1996 and 1998 were used to calibrate and verify the model.Also,the model for the river net and 2-D horizontal model for the Jingjiang flood diversion were coupled to simulate the flood routing process of Jingjiang River,Dongting Lake,and the Jingjiang flood diversion area.The simulated results by the model agree well with the real situation.

Abstract:Accurate and scalable hydrologic models are essential building blocks of several important applications, from water resource management to timely flood warnings. However, as the climate changes, precipitation and rainfall-runoff pattern variations become more extreme, and accurate training data that can account for the resulting distributional shifts become more scarce. In this work we present a novel family of hydrologic models, called HydroNets, which leverages river network structure. HydroNets are deep neural network models designed to exploit both basin specific rainfall-runoff signals, and upstream network dynamics, which can lead to improved predictions at longer horizons. The injection of the river structure prior knowledge reduces sample complexity and allows for scalable and more accurate hydrologic modeling even with only a few years of data. We present an empirical study over two large basins in India that convincingly support the proposed model and its advantages.

Abstract:Efficient and accurate streamflow predictions are important for urban water management. Data-driven models, especially neural network (NN) models can predict streamflow fast, while the results are uncertain in some complex river systems. Physically based models can reveal the underlying physics, but it is relatively slow and computationally costly. This work focuses on evaluating the reliability of three NN models (artificial neural networks (ANN), long short-term memory networks (LSTM), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS)) and one physically based model (SOBEK) in terms of efficiency and accuracy for average and peak streamflow simulation. All the models are applied for a tidal river and a mountainous river in Shenzhen. The results show that, the ANN model calculates fastest since the hidden layer's structure is simple. The LSTM model is reliable in average streamflow simulation in tidal river with the lowest bias while the ANFIS model has the best accuracy for peak streamflow simulation. Furthermore, the SOBEK model shows reliability in simulating average and peak streamflow in mountainous river due to its ability to capture uneven spatial rainfall in the area. Overall, the results indicate that the LSTM model can be a helpful supplementary to physically based models in streamflow simulation of complex urban river systems, by giving fast streamflow predictions with usually acceptable accuracy. Our results can provide helpful information for hydrological engineers in the application of flooding early warning and emergency preparedness in the context of flooding risk management.

Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:River flow (Qflow) is a hydrological process that considerably impacts the management and sustainability of water resources. The literature has shown great potential for nature-inspired optimized algorithms (NIOAs), like hybrid artificial intelligence (HAI) models, for Qflow modeling. Qflow forecasting needs to be accurate, robust, reliable, and capable of resolving complex non-linear problems to support the decision authority in local and national governments and NGOs. This extensive survey provides a literature review of 100-plus high-impact factor journal articles on developing NIOAs models during 2000–2022. This encompasses a comprehensive review of the established research in different climatic zones, NIOA types, artificial intelligence (AI) models, the input parameters used for model development, Qflow on different time scales, and model evaluation using a wide range of performance metrics. The review also assessed and evaluated several components of relevant literature, along with detailing the existing research gaps. Moreover, the global research gap with future direction is discussed based on current research limitations and possibilities. The data availability evaluation and futuristic suggestions are drafted logically. The review revealed the superiority of the NIOAs among all applied algorithms in the literature. Further, the review concludes that there is a need to improve technical aspects of Qflow forecasting and bridge the gap between scientific research, hydrometeorological model development, and real-world flood and drought management using probabilistic nature inspired (NI) forecasts, especially through effective communication.
