Abstract:In this review we address the uncertainties implicit in evolutionary synthesis model computations. After describing the general structure of synthesis codes, we discuss several source of uncertainties that may affect their results. In particular, we discuss the uncertainties arising in the computation of isochrones from evolutionary tracks; those related to atmosphere models; those that are a consequence of the incompleteness of the input ingredients; and those associated with the computational aspect used in synthesis codes. We also discuss the issue of the inclusion of distributed properties in synthesis models; as a paradigm of this case, we illustrate the difficulties implied by the inclusion of tracks with rotation in synthesis models. Finally, we describe several examples of the statistical approach to population synthesis. We report on the failure of the fuel consumption theorem (FCT) and the isochrone synthesis code to produce mutually consistent results. However, we argue that FCT and isochrone synthesis results are reliable for application to real systems in the wavelength range where they coincide. On the constructive side, we derive several useful survival strategies to bypass uncertainties. We show that single stellar populations at the turn-off ages of the tabulated tracks can be safely compared, as they are scarcely affected by the interpolation scheme used to compute isochrones. Finally, we suggest to use derivative quantities, such as the SN-rate, as bug detectors. On the recommendation side, we advocate for greater transparency and more documentation in synthesis modeling. We also ask stellar model makers to think of us and include more mass values in the tracks.
Statistics and multiwavelength synthesis models: towards a new generation of synthesis models

Abstract:In this contribution I present my current work in a new generation of evolutionary synthesis models that compute the multiwavelength energy distribution (from gamma-rays to radio) as well as the associated dispersion for young stellar systems. I will also show some statistical effects that may appear in the analysis of surveys, like bimodal or multi-modal distributions and bias when color indices computed by the codes are compared with observations. Such new generation of synthesis models may be useful for the analysis of the data expected from GTC.

Abstract:The basic assumptions behind Population Synthesis and Spectral Evolution models are reviewed. The numerical problems encountered by the standard population synthesis technique when applied to models with truncated star formation rates are described. The Isochrone Synthesis algorithm is introduced as a means to circumvent these problems. A summary of results from the application of this algorithm to model galaxy spectra by Bruzual and Charlot (1993, 2000) follows. I present a comparison of these population synthesis model predictions with observed spectra and color magnitude diagrams for stellar systems of various ages and metallicities. It is argued that models built using different ingredients differ in the resulting values of some basic quantities (e.g. $M/L_V$), without need to invoking violations of physical principles. The range of allowed colors in the observer frame is explored for several galaxy redshifts.

On the distribution of initial masses of stellar clusters inferred from synthesis models

Abstract:The fundamental properties of stellar clusters, such as the age or the total initial mass in stars, are often inferred from population synthesis models. The predicted properties are then used to constrain the physical mechanisms involved in the formation of such clusters in a variety of environments. Population synthesis models cannot, however, be applied blindy to such systems. We show that synthesis models cannot be used in the usual straightforward way to small-mass clusters (say, M < few times 10**4 Mo). The reason is that the basic hypothesis underlying population synthesis (a fixed proportionality between the number of stars in the different evolutionary phases) is not fulfilled in these clusters due to their small number of stars. This incomplete sampling of the stellar mass function results in a non-gaussian distribution of the mass-luminosity ratio for clusters that share the same evolutionary conditions (age, metallicity and initial stellar mass distribution function). We review some tests that can be carried out a priori to check whether a given cluster can be analysed with the fully-sampled standard population synthesis models, or, on the contrary, a probabilistic framework must be used. This leads to a re-assessment in the estimation of the low-mass tail in the distribution function of initial masses of stellar clusters.

Constraints on Energy Momentum Squared Gravity from cosmic chronometers and Supernovae Type Ia data

Abstract:In this work we perform an observational data analysis on the energy momentum squared gravity model. Possible solutions for matter density are obtained from the model and their cosmological implications are studied. Some recent observational data is used to constrain model parameters using statistical techniques. We have used the cosmic chronometer and SNe Type-Ia Riess (292) $H(z)-z$ data-sets in our study. Along with the data-sets we have also used baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak parameter and cosmic microwave background (CMB) peak parameter to obtain bounds on the model parameters. Joint analysis of the data with the above mentioned parameters have been performed to obtain better results. For the statistical analysis we have used the minimization technique of the $\chi^{2}$ statistic. Using this tool we have constrained the free parameters of the model. Confidence contours have been generated for the predicted values of the free parameters at the $66\%$, $90\%$ and $99\%$ confidence levels. Finally we have compared our analysis with the union2 data sample presented by Amanullah et al.,2010 and the recently published Pantheon data sample. Finally a multi-component model is investigated by adding dust to a general cosmological fluid with equation of state $w=-1/3$. The density parameters were studied and their values were found to comply with the observational results.

Abstract:Binary stars are common and it is necessary to model stellar populations using binary stars. We introduce a method to model binary-star stellar populations quickly. The method can also be used to model single-star stellar populations. The method is called rapid stellar population synthesis and it is based on a statistical isochrone database of both single- and bianry-star stellar populations. The database can be obtained easily from the CDS (or on request to the authors) and can be used conveniently for most stellar population studies and colour-magnitude fits. The main feature of using such a technique for modeling stellar populations is that it can save much computing time. Comparing to the method which evolves binary-stars using stellar evolution codes directly, the rapid stellar population synthesis method takes only one of 200,000 of the computing time. Although we can use the database to model stellar populations quickly, the involved uncertainties in spectra synthesis is small ($\sim$ 0.8%). I also introduce the method that uses the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of single stellar populations to model the SEDs of composite populations.

Abstract:Low mass star formation regions are unlikely to fully populate their initial mass functions, leading to a deficit of massive stars. In binary stellar populations, the full range of binary separations and mass ratios will also be underpopulated. To explore the effects of stochastic sampling in the integrated light of stellar clusters, we calculate models at a broad range of cluster masses, from 10^2 to 10^7 M_sun, using a binary stellar population synthesis code. For clusters with stellar masses less than 10^5 M_sun, observable quantities show substantial scatter and their mean properties reflect the expected deficit of massive stars. In common with previous work, we find that purely stochastic sampling of the initial mass function appears to underestimate the mass of the most massive star in known clusters. However, even with this constraint, the majority of clusters likely inject sufficient kinetic energy to clear their birth clusters of gas. For quantities which directly measure the impact of the most massive stars, such as N_{ion}, xi_{ion} and beta_{UV}, uncertainties due to stochastic sampling dominate over those from the IMF shape or distribution of binary parameters, while stochastic sampling has a negligible effect on the stellar continuum luminosity density.

Abstract:Aims. We want to find the distribution of initial conditions that best reproduces disc observations at the population level. Methods. We first ran a parameter study using a 1D model that includes the viscous evolution of a gas disc, dust, and pebbles, coupled with an emission model to compute the millimetre flux observable with ALMA. This was used to train a machine learning surrogate model that can compute the relevant quantity for comparison with observations in seconds. This surrogate model was used to perform parameter studies and synthetic disc populations. Results. Performing a parameter study, we find that internal photoevaporation leads to a lower dependency of disc lifetime on stellar mass than external photoevaporation. This dependence should be investigated in the future. Performing population synthesis, we find that under the combined losses of internal and external photoevaporation, discs are too short lived. Conclusions. To match observational constraints, future models of disc evolution need to include one or a combination of the following processes: infall of material to replenish the discs, shielding of the disc from internal photoevaporation due to magnetically driven disc winds, and extinction of external high-energy radiation. Nevertheless, disc properties in low-external-photoevaporation regions can be reproduced by having more massive and compact discs. Here, the optimum values of the $\alpha$ viscosity parameter lie between $3\times10^{-4}$ and $10^{-3}$ and with internal photoevaporation being the main mode of disc dispersal.

Abstract:Simulating a survey of fluxes and redshifts (distances) from an astrophysical population is a routine task. \texttt{popsynth} provides a generic, object-oriented framework to produce synthetic surveys from various distributions and luminosity functions, apply selection functions to the observed variables and store them in a portable (HDF5) format. Population synthesis routines can be constructed either using classes or from a serializable YAML format allowing flexibility and portability. Users can not only sample the luminosity and distance of the populations, but they can create auxiliary distributions for parameters which can have arbitrarily complex dependencies on one another. Thus, users can simulate complex astrophysical populations which can be used to calibrate analysis frameworks or quickly test ideas.

Abstract:In this contribution we investigate how to describe the results and usage of evolutionary synthesis models. In particular, we look for an explicit and quantitative description of the parameter space of synthesis models and the evaluation of their associated uncertainties and dispersion. First, we need to understand what synthesis models actually compute: we show that a synthetic stellar population with fixed physical parameters (age, metallicity, star formation history, initial mass function and size of the system) can only be described in terms of probability distributions (i.e. there is an intrinsic dispersion in any model). Second, we need to identify and characterize the coverage in the parameter space of the models (i.e. the combinations of input parameters that yield meaningful models) and the different sources of systematic errors. Third, we need a way to describe quantitatively the intrinsic dispersion, the systematic error and the parameter space coverage of the models. Up to now, the parameter space coverage and uncertainties have been described qualitatively in the models' reference papers, with potential misinterpretations by models' users. We show how Virtual Observatory developments enable a correct use of synthesis models to obtain accurate (and not simply precise) results.

Validation of optimised population synthesis through mock spectra and Galactic globular clusters

Abstract:Optimised population synthesis provides an empirical method to extract the relative mix of stellar evolutionary stages and the distribution of atmospheric parameters within unresolved stellar systems, yet a robust validation of this method is still lacking. We here provide a calibration of population synthesis via non-linear bound-constrained optimisation of stellar populations based upon optical spectra of mock stellar systems and observed Galactic Globular Clusters (GGCs). The MILES stellar library is used as a basis for mock spectra as well as templates for the synthesis of deep GGC spectra from Schiavon et al. (2005). Optimised population synthesis applied to mock spectra recovers mean light-weighted stellar atmospheric parameters to within a mean uncertainty of 240 K, 0.04 dex, and 0.03 dex for T_eff, log(g), and [Fe/H], respectively. Decompositions of both mock and GGC spectra confirm the method's ability to recover the expected mean light-weighted metallicity in dust-free conditions (E[B-V] < 0.15) with uncertainties comparable to evolutionary population synthesis methods. Dustier conditions require either appropriate dust-modelling when fitting to the full spectrum, or fitting only to select spectral features. We derive light-weighted fractions of stellar evolutionary stages from our population synthesis fits to GGCs, yielding on average a combined 25+/-6 per cent from main sequence and turnoff dwarfs, 64+/-7 per cent from subgiant, red giant and asymptotic giant branch stars, and 15+/-7 per cent from horizontal branch stars and blue stragglers. Excellent agreement is found between these fractions and those estimated from deep HST/ACS CMDs. Overall, optimised population synthesis remains a powerful tool for understanding the stellar populations within the integrated light of galaxies and globular clusters.

Population Synthesis Models Indicate a Need for Early and Ubiquitous Disk Substructures

Abstract:Large mm surveys of star forming regions enable the study of entire populations of planet-forming disks and reveal correlations between their observable properties. Population studies of disks have shown that the correlation between disk size and millimeter flux could be explained either through disks with strong substructure, or alternatively by the effects of radial inward drift of growing dust particles. This study aims to constrain the parameters and initial conditions of planet-forming disks and address the question of the need for the presence of substructures in disks and, if needed, their predicted characteristics, based on the large samples of disk sizes, millimeter fluxes, and spectral indices available. We performed a population synthesis of the continuum emission of disks, exploiting a two-population model (two-pop-py), considering the influence of viscous evolution, dust growth, fragmentation, and transport varying the initial conditions of the disk and substructure to find the best match to the observed distributions. We show that the observed distributions of spectral indices, sizes, and luminosities together can be best reproduced by disks with significant substructure, namely a perturbation strong enough to be able to trap particles, and that is formed early in the evolution of the disk, that is within 0.4Myr. Agreement is reached by relatively high initial disk masses ($10^{-2.3}M_{\star}\leqslant M_{disk}\leqslant10^{-0.5}M_{\star}$) and moderate levels of turbulence ($10^{-3.5}\leqslant\alpha\leqslant 10^{-2.5}$). Other disk parameters play a weaker role. Only opacities with high absorption efficiency can reproduce the observed spectral indices. Our results extend to the whole population that substructure is likely ubiquitous, so far assessed only in individual disks and implies that most "smooth" disks hide unresolved substructure.

Planetary Population Synthesis and the Emergence of Four Classes of Planetary System Architectures

Abstract:Planetary population synthesis is a tool to understand the physics of planetary system formation. It builds on a model that includes a multitude of physical processes. The outcome can be statistically compared with exoplanet observations. Here, we review the population synthesis method and then use one population to explore how different planetary system architectures emerge and which conditions lead to their formation. The systems can be classified into four main architectures: Class I of near-in situ compositionally ordered terrestrial and ice planets, Class II of migrated sub-Neptunes, Class III of mixed low-mass and giant planets, broadly similar to the Solar System, and Class IV of dynamically active giants without inner low-mass planets. These four classes exhibit distinct typical formation pathways and are characterised by certain mass scales. Class I systems form from the local accretion of planetesimals followed by a giant impact phase, and the final planet masses correspond to the `Goldreich mass'. Class II systems form when planets reach the `equality mass' (equal accretion and migration timescales) before the dispersal of the gas disc, but not large enough to allow for rapid gas accretion. Giant planets form when the `equality mass' allows for rapid gas accretion while the planet are migrating, i.e. when the critical core mass is reached. The main discriminant of the four classes is the initial mass of solids in the disc, with contributions from the lifetime and mass of the gas disc. The breakdown into classes allows to better understand which physical processes are dominant. Comparison with observations reveals certain differences to the actual population, pointing at limitation of theoretical understanding. For example, the overrepresentation of synthetic super Earths and sub-Neptunes in Class I causes these planets to be found at lower metallicities than in observations.

Mapping inspiral rates on population synthesis parameters

Abstract:Formation rates of compact-object binaries are often derived from population synthesis calculations. However, such calculations depend sensitively on a relatively large number of model input parameters. Given considerable uncertainty in those model parameters, the predicted inspiral rates for double compact objects relevant to gravitational-wave interferometric detectors have been shown to be are uncertain by several orders of magnitude. Typically, inspiral rates are estimated for only a small set of models with a remarkably poor coverage of the highly multi-dimensional parameter space (primarily because of limited computer resources). Here, using as an example seven population-synthesis model parameters, we show that it is possible to derive fits of double-compact-object inspiral rates dependent simultaneously on all seven parameters. We find these fits to be accurate to 50% for binary black holes and to 40% for binary neutron stars. The availability of such fits implies that (i) depending on the problem of interest, it is not necessary to complete large numbers of computationally demanding population synthesis calculations; and (ii) for the first time, the sufficient exploration of the relevant phase space and the assessment of the uncertainties involved is not limited by computational resources and becomes feasible. Finally, we have also produced a histogram of the (a priori likely) binary black hole inpsiral rate, assuming our population synthesis models are equally likely. This histogram, effectively an a priori probability distribution for the BH-BH inspiral rate, suggests that merger rate is conservatively bounded below by 10^(-8)/yr/Milky-Way-galaxy.

Abstract:Population synthesis is the foundation of the agent-based social simulation. Current approaches mostly consider basic population and households, rather than other social organizations. This article starts with a theoretical analysis of the iterative proportional updating (IPU) algorithm, a representative method in this field, and then gives an extension to consider more social organization types. The IPU method, for the first time, proves to be unable to converge to an optimal population distribution that simultaneously satisfies the constraints from individual and household levels. It is further improved to a bilevel optimization, which can solve such a problem and include more than one type of social organization. Numerical simulations, as well as population synthesis using actual Chinese nationwide census data, support our theoretical conclusions and indicate that our proposed bilevel optimization can both synthesize more social organization types and get more accurate results.

Abstract:We present a new model for computing the spectral evolution of stellar populations at ages between 1 × 105 and 2 × 1010 yr at a resolution of 3 Å across the whole wavelength range from 3200 to 9500 Å for a wide range of metallicities. These predictions are based on a newly available library of observed stellar spectra. We also compute the spectral evolution across a larger wavelength range, from 91 Å to 160 μm, at lower resolution. The model incorporates recent progress in stellar evolution theory and an observationally motivated prescription for thermally pulsing stars on the asymptotic giant branch. The latter is supported by observations of surface brightness fluctuations in nearby stellar populations. We show that this model reproduces well the observed optical and near‐infrared colour–magnitude diagrams of Galactic star clusters of various ages and metallicities. Stochastic fluctuations in the numbers of stars in different evolutionary phases can account for the full range of observed integrated colours of star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. The model reproduces in detail typical galaxy spectra from the Early Data Release (EDR) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We exemplify how this type of spectral fit can constrain physical parameters such as the star formation history, metallicity and dust content of galaxies. Our model is the first to enable accurate studies of absorption‐line strengths in galaxies containing stars over the full range of ages. Using the highest‐quality spectra of the SDSS EDR, we show that this model can reproduce simultaneously the observed strengths of those Lick indices that do not depend strongly on element abundance ratios. The interpretation of such indices with our model should be particularly useful for constraining the star formation histories and metallicities of galaxies.

Methods in Ecology and Evolution

Abstract:Continuous‐space population models can yield significantly different results from their panmictic counterparts when assessing evolutionary, ecological or population genetic processes. However, the computational burden of spatial models is typically much greater than that of panmictic models due to the overhead of determining which individuals interact with one another and how strongly they interact. While these calculations are necessary to model local competition that regulates the population density, they can lead to prohibitively long runtimes. Here, we present a novel modelling method in which the resources available to a population are abstractly represented as an additional layer of the simulation. Instead of interacting directly with one another, individuals interact indirectly via this resource layer. We find that this method closely matches other spatial models, yet can dramatically increase the speed of the model, allowing the simulation of much larger populations. In addition to improved runtimes, models structured in this manner exhibit other desirable characteristics, including more explicit control over population density near the edge of the simulated area, and an efficient route for modelling complex heterogeneous landscapes.
