Abstract:Herein, the postsynthetic ligand exchange process was adopted to construct a series of 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) and 6-sulfonate-1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H3SNDC) based Zr(IV)-MOFs (Zr-(NDC)x (SNDC)1-x). This strategy anchored functional sulfonic acid groups in the pore of the MOFs. Among them, Zr-(NDC)0.3(SNDC)0.7 exhibited outstanding proton conductivity of 3.18 ✕ 10−4 S cm−1 at 90 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH), which was approximately three orders of magnitude greater than that of pristine Zr-NDC. This work demonstrated a facile in situ ligand exchange approach for constructing functional group modified MOFs with high proton conductivity.

Abstract:Developing a new type of proton conductive material is key to improve the energy conversion performance of PEMFC. In recent years, MOF matrix conductive materials have become one of the research hotspots in the field of MOF. However, the grain boundaries in MOF particles and MOF@polymer composite films make it difficult to form long‐range ordered proton transport channels. Reducing crystallinity and changing the internal structural properties of MOF matrix may effectively improve its proton conductivity. In this study, some synthesis strategies were used to induce the crystallinity of MOF matrix to improve the proton conductivity, and low‐crystallinity MOG materials were obtained. In all, eight materials were prepared. The morphology characterization and proton conductivity of MOF and MOG materials were studied to explore the influence of different crystallinities and internal structures on proton conductivity. The results explicitly indicated that for the hydrophilic materials, the proton conductivity of MOG‐MOF‐808, MOG‐UiO‐66, MOG‐HKUST‐1 was significantly improved, compared to the corresponding MOFs at 75% RH. Among them, MOG‐MOF‐808 and MOG‐UiO‐66 show strong water stability and thermal stability, ensuring that it can be applied in special and complex environments. For the hydrophobic ZIF‐8 and MOG‐ZIF‐8, both their proton conductivities are low due to the material characteristics and network structures, while the proton conductivity of MOG‐ZIF‐8 is also higher than that of ZIF‐8 at 303 K. The results show that the abundant low‐crystallinity network structure in MOG materials played a very important role in improving the proton conductivity of the hydrophilic materials.

Abstract:Three zirconium‐oxo clusters decorated by sulfate groups, named Zr6, Zr18 and Zr70 are developed as proton conductors with superprotonic conductivities. Zr6 and Zr70 have stable proton conductivities of > 10−2 S cm−1 with ultralow activation energies between 30 and 70 °C, which is the first observed among metal‐oxo cluster‐based proton conductors reported thus far. Metal‐oxo clusters have emerged as advanced proton conductors with well‐defined and tunable structures. Nevertheless, the exploitation of metal‐oxo clusters with high and stable proton conductivity over a relatively wide temperature range still remains a great challenge. Herein, three sulfate groups decorated zirconium‐oxo clusters (Zr6, Zr18, and Zr70) as proton conductors are reported, which exhibit ultrahigh bulk proton conductivities of 1.71 × 10−1, 2.01 × 10−2, and 3.73 × 10−2 S cm−1 under 70 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH), respectively. Remarkably, Zr6 and Zr70 with multiple sulfate groups as proton hopping sites show ultralow activation energies of 0.22 and 0.18 eV, respectively, and stable bulk conductivities of >10−2 S cm−1 between 30 and 70 °C at 98% RH. Moreover, a time‐dependent proton conductivity test reveals that the best performing Zr6 can maintain high proton conductivity up to 15 h with negligible loss at 70 °C and 98% RH, representing one of the best crystalline cluster‐based proton conducting materials.

Abstract:Constructing highly proton-conducting metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) remains a difficult challenge. Hence, we developed an effective nanochannel engineering strategy by grafting sulfonic-abundant benzene-1,3,5-trisulfonic acid (BTSA) onto the Zr6-clusters of PCN-222 to act as a proton-conducting intensifier. Although the introduced BTSA dramatically reduced the pore volume, the resultant MOF (PCN-222-BTSA) exhibited strong water affinity and thus significantly enhanced water uptake at low RH values, reaching up to an almost equivalent water adsorption capacity at a high RH value compared with the capacity of pristine PCN-222. Benefiting from the enhanced water adsorption behavior and the proton-donating capability of sulfonic groups, PCN-222-BTSA displayed 2–3 orders of magnitude higher proton conductivity than pristine PCN-222. Our work is the first to report on postsynthetic modification in the nanochannel of MOFs for proton conduction, which demonstrates a strategy to design functional MOFs with abundant sulfonic groups and provides a bright avenue for constructing proton-conducting materials.

Abstract:Owing to their inherent pore structure, porous metal organic frameworks (MOFs) can undergo postsynthetic modification, such as loading extra-framework proton carriers. However, strategies for improving the proton conductivity for nonporous MOFs are largely lacking, although increasing numbers of nonporous MOFs exhibit promising proton conductivities. Often, high humidity is required for nonporous MOFs to achieve high conductivities, but to date no clear mechanisms have been experimentally identified. Here we describe the new materials MFM-550(M), [M(HL1)], (H4L1 = biphenyl-4,4'-diphosphonic acid; M = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Ho), MFM-550(Ba), [Ba(H2L1)], and MFM-555(M), [M(HL2)], (H4L2 = benzene-1,4-diphosphonic acid; M = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Ho), and report enhanced proton conductivities in these nonporous materials by (i) replacing the metal ion to one with a lower oxidation state, (ii) reducing the length of the organic ligand, and (iii) introducing additional acidic protons on the MOF surface. Increased framework proton density in these materials can lead to an enhancement in proton conductivity of up to 4 orders of magnitude. Additionally, we report a comprehensive investigation using in situ H-2 NMR and neutron spectroscopy, coupled with molecular dynamic modeling, to elucidate the role of humidity in assembling interconnected networks for proton hopping. This study constructs a relationship between framework proton density and the corresponding proton conductivity in nonporous MOFs, and directly explains the role of both surface protons and external water in assembling the proton conduction pathways.
A robust zirconium amino acid metal-organic framework for proton conduction

Abstract:Proton conductive materials are of significant importance and highly desired for clean energy-related applications. Discovery of practical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high proton conduction remains a challenge due to the use of toxic chemicals, inconvenient ligand preparation and complication of production at scale for the state-of-the-art candidates. Herein, we report a zirconium-MOF, MIP-202(Zr), constructed from natural α-amino acid showing a high and steady proton conductivity of 0.011 S cm-1 at 363 K and under 95% relative humidity. This MOF features a cost-effective, green and scalable preparation with a very high space-time yield above 7000 kg m-3 day-1. It exhibits a good chemical stability under various conditions, including solutions of wide pH range and boiling water. Finally, a comprehensive molecular simulation was carried out to shed light on the proton conduction mechanism. All together these features make MIP-202(Zr) one of the most promising candidates to approach the commercial benchmark Nafion.
Acidic Groups Functionalized Carbon Dots Capping Channels of a Proton Conductive Metal–Organic Framework by Coordination Bonds to Improve the Water-Retention Capacity and Boost Proton Conduction

Abstract:Crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been demonstrated to be versatile material platforms for the development of solid proton conductors. However, most crystalline porous proton conductors suffer from decreasing proton conductivity with increasing temperature due to releasing water molecules, and this disadvantage severely restricts their practical application in electrochemical devices. In this work, for the first time, hydrophilic carbon dots (CDs) were utilized to hybridize with high proton conductivity MOF-802, which is a model of MOF proton conductors, aiming to improve its water-retention capacity and thus enhance proton conduction. The resultant CDs@MOF-802 exhibits impregnable proton conduction with increasing temperature, and the proton conductivity reaches 10-1 S cm-1, much superior to that of MOF-802, making CDs@MOF-802 one of the most efficient MOF proton conductors reported so far. This study provides a new strategy to improve the water-retention capacity of porous proton conductors and further realize excellent proton conduction.

Abstract:The development of advanced materials needs to be continuously promoted by the cyclic process of mastering the structure-activity relationship, designing the experimental scheme, measuring the performance and feeding back the design ideas. Therefore, understanding the proton conduction mechanism and having the ability of orientally constructing efficient intrinsic proton transport are very important for the research of proton conductors. Herein, we propose an effective and feasible strategy of replacing the formates and hydroxide groups coordinated with Zr in MOF-808 with 1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid (IMC) and 4,5-imidaoledicarboxylic acid (IMDC) containing imidazole groups to synthesize MOF-808-IMC and MOF-808-IMDC. The proton conduction performances of MOF-808-IMC and MOF-808-IMDC are much higher than that of the original MOF-808. Especially, the MOF-808-IMDC exhibits an intrinsic proton conductivity of 1.11 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 80 ̊C and 98% RH, which can be comparable with the performances of commercial perfluorosulfonic acid resin and other MOFs-based proton conductors. It is also noted that the proton conductivities of MOF-808-IMDC have good cyclic stability and durability, which suggests that it has the potential used as a PEM. Furthermore, the proton transfer mechanism has been clarified in detail, which can provide a theoretical basis for the preparation of excellent proton conductors.

Abstract:The poor electrical conductivity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been a stumbling block for its applications in many important fields. Therefore, exploring a simple and effective strategy to regulate the conductivity of MOFs is highly desired. Herein, anionic guest molecules are incorporated inside the pores of a cationic MOF (PFC-8), which increases its conductivity by five orders of magnitude while maintaining the original porosity. In contrast, the same operation in an isoreticular neutral framework (PFC-9) does not bring such a significant change. Theoretical studies reveal that the guest molecules, stabilized inside pores through electrostatic interaction, play the role of electron donors as do in semiconductors, bringing in an analogous n-type semiconductor mechanism for electron conduction. Therefore, we demonstrate that harnessing electrostatic interaction provides a new way to regulate the conductivity of MOFs without necessarily altering the original porous structure. This strategy would greatly broaden MOFs’ application potential in electronic and optoelectronic technologies.

Abstract:Achieving high intrinsic proton conductivity is essential for the development of stable proton conductors in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, an ionic liquid (IL) with a hydrosulfate anion, an imidazole ring, and a sulfonate group beneficial to proton transfer was used to functionalize a metal–organic framework (MOF-808) by replacing the formates coordinated with Zr. The obtained MOF-808-IL exhibits high intrinsic proton conductivity of 1.28 × 10–1 S cm–1 at 60 °C and 100% relative humidity (RH), which exceeds those of most of the MOF-based proton conductors. Moreover, the proton transfer mechanism has been elucidated by the combination of the crystal structure and variable temperature Fourier transform infrared spectra. This study provides a strategy for achieving ultrahigh proton conductivity and a model for analyzing the proton conducting mechanism.

Abstract:Taking a robust zirconium-based metal–organic framework, UiO-66, as a prototype, functional postmodification via the versatile Cu(I)-catalyzed azide–alkyne "click" reaction was carried out, and sulfonic acid groups were successfully grafted into its skeleton. Characterizations revealed that the MOF network was still well maintained after being treated by "clicked" modification. Investigations by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed that its proton conductivity increases exponentially up to 8.8 × 10–3 S cm–1 at 80 °C and 98% RH, while those of the UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 are only 6.3 × 10–6 and 3.5 × 10–6 S cm–1, respectively, at the same condition. Additionally, the continuous test shows it possesses long-life reusability. Abstract:Attracted by the excellent structural stability and structural diversity of the metal–organic frameworks based on main group metals, we review the proton conductive properties of such MOFs herein, and hope to provide comprehensive and accurate guidance for related research. The properties of these MOFs are classified and reviewed according to the types of main group metal elements (s-block and p-block). We mainly focus on the following aspects: preparation strategy and synthesis techniques, influence of organic ligands on the final structures, structural stability including thermal, water and chemical stability, the proton conductivity under humidity or anhydrous conditions, the proton conducting mechanisms, and the structure–property relationship. In the end, the highlights and deficiencies of the previous research and the future challenges and trend of the research will be highlighted.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a type of proton conductive materials have gained much achievements. Here, an acylamide-functionalized 3D metal-organic framework [Ni3(TPBTC)2(stp)2(H2O)4]·2DMA·32H2O has been successfully constructed via combining Ni(NO3)2, TPBTC (TPBTC = Benzene-1, 3, 5-tricarboxylic acid tris-pyridin-4-ylamide) and 2-H2stp (2-H2stp = 2-sulfoterephthalic acid monosodium salt) under solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) revealed that there are uncoordinated guest DMA molecules in the pores of compound. On removal of guest DMA molecules, the proton conductivity of the compound increased to 2.25 × 10-3 S cm−1 under 80°C and 98% RH which is about 110 times of the original material. It is hoped that this work can provide the essential insight for designing and obtaining more excellent crystalline-state proton conducting materials by considering the influences of guest molecules on proton-conduction properties of porous materials.

Abstract:MFM-722(Pb)-DMA undergoes a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation to give MFM-722(Pb)-H2O via ligand substitution upon exposure to water vapour. In situ single crystal impedance spectroscopy reveals an increase in proton conductivity due to this structural transition, with MFM-722(Pb)-H2O showing a proton conductivity of 6.61 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 50 °C and 98% RH. The low activation energy (Ea = 0.21 eV) indicates that the proton conduction follows a Grotthuss mechanism.
