Abstract:A novel composite material named sliver nanoparticles@carbon dots (AgNPs/CDs) was fabricated with CDs as the capping agents through one simple method. The images of TEM showed that CDs were embedded in the gaps of AgNPs and the as-prepared AgNPs/CDs can be self assembled into nanochains through electrosatic interaction between silver nanoparticles and carbon dots. With higher redox properties than AgNPs, the as-prepared com-posites exhibited excellent synergistic antibacterial performance against Gram-positive bacterium and Gram-negative bacterium in the antibacterial assays, which indicates potential application as an effective antibacte-rial material. And the results of antibacterial assy showed that the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of AgNPs/CDs were 40 mu g/mL for E. coli and 20 mu g/mL for S. aureus in LB medium. In addition, the oxidative stress induced by AgNPs/CDs-mediated reactive oxygen species further confirmed good application prospects in antibacterial.

Abstract:Bacterial infections have posed a large threat on human health. It is necessary to look for various strategies for inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Silver-based nanomaterials have become good candidate for designing antibacterial agents. Different from the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using additional ligand and reducing agent, our simpler strategy constructs carbon-silver nanocomposites (C-Ag NCs) using polysaccharide-derived CDs as reductant and stabilizer. The facile C-Ag NCs possess superior antibacterial activity with MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration) of 1.3 μg/mL Ag after incubation for 6 h. The designed C-Ag NCs with MBC of 1.3 μg/mL Ag can kill a wide range of bacteria (including Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Vibrio parahemolyticus, and Shigella castellani). We believe that the simple hybrid C-Ag NCs provide alternative strategies for design of antimicrobial agents in biomedicine and food industry.

Abstract:In this study, catechol-conjugated chitosan (CSS) was synthesized to prepare silver nanoparticles in aqueous solution as both a reducing and stabilizing agent. The entire reaction process complied with the principles of green chemistry. The stability and physicochemical properties of CSS-coated silver nanoparticles (CSS–Ag NPs) were well characterized by a series of techniques. A narrow diameter distribution and excellent stability were observed in the target CSS–Ag NPs. Determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the disk diffusion test were applied to evaluate the antibacterial activities with respect to quantity and quality, respectively. The cytotoxic effects on HepG2 cells were also evaluated with a series of assays. The resulting CSS–Ag NPs combined the unique properties of chitosan and silver nanoparticles, showing effective antibacterial activities and low cytotoxicity. The effective toxic concentration of CSS–Ag NPs towards E. coli and S. aureus is too low to damage HepG2 cells. The results demonstrated that CSS–Ag NPs could be a potential candidate for use in biological and pharmaceutical areas to prevent infections caused by microorganisms.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is a highly promising field, with nanoparticles produced and utilized in a wide range of commercial products. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been widely used in clothing, electronics, bio-sensing, the food industry, paints, sunscreens, cosmetics and medical devices, all of which increase human exposure and thus the potential risk related to their short- and long-term toxicity. Many studies indicate that AgNPs are toxic to human health. Interestingly, the majority of these studies focus on the interaction of the nano-silver particle with single cells, indicating that AgNPs have the potential to induce the genes associated with cell cycle progression, DNA damage and mitochondrial associated apoptosis. AgNPs administered through any method were subsequently detected in blood and were found to cause deposition in several organs. There are very few studies in rats and mice involving the in vivo bio-distribution and toxicity, organ accumulation and degradation, and the possible adverse effects and toxicity in vivo are only slowly being recognized. In the present review, we summarize the current data associated with the increased medical usage of nano-silver and its related nano-materials, compare the mechanism of antibiosis and discuss the proper application of nano-silver particles.
Robust Antibacterial Activity of Tungsten Oxide (WO3-X) Nanodots

Abstract:Antibacterial agents are an important tool in the prevention of bacterial infections. Inorganic materials are attractive due to their high stability under a variety of conditions compared to organic antibacterial agents. Herein tungsten oxide nanodots (WO3-X), synthesized by a simple one-pot synthetic approach, was found to exhibit efficient antibacterial capabilities. The analyses with colony-forming units (CFU) showed excellent antibacterial activity of WO3-X against both gram-negative E. coli (Escherichia coli) and gram-positive S. aureus (Staphylococcus aureus) strains. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed clear damage to the bacterial cell membranes, which was further confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations. Additionally, exposure to simulated sunlight was found to further increase germicidal activity of WO3-X nanodots – a 30-minute exposure to sunlight (combining 50 μg/mL WO3-X nanodots) showed a 70% decrease in E. coli viability compared to without exposure. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) was used to elucidate the underlying mechanism of this photocatalytic activity through the generation of hydroxyl radical species. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and the live/dead assay were further employed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of WO3-X nanodots on eukaryotic cells, which demonstrated their general biocompatibility. In all, our results suggest WO3-X nanodots have considerable potential in antibacterial applications, while also being biocompatible at large.

Abstract:The mounting threat of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections has made it imperative to develop innovative antibacterial strategies. Here we propose a novel antibacterial nanoplatform of silver nanoparticles-decorated and mesoporous silica coated single-walled carbon nanotubes constructed via a N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylene diamine (TSD)-mediated method (SWCNTs@mSiO 2 -TSD@Ag). In this system, the outer mesoporous silica shells are able to improve the dispersibility of SWCNTs, which will increase their contact area with bacteria cell walls. Meanwhile, the large number of mesopores in silica layers act as microreactors for in situ synthesis of Ag NPs with controlled small size and uniform distribution, which induces an enhanced antibacterial activity. Compared with TSD modified mesoporous silica coated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs@mSiO 2 -TSD) and commercial Ag NPs, this combination nanosystem of SWCNTs@mSiO 2 -TSD@Ag exhibits much stronger antibacterial performance against multi-drug-resistant bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in vitro through damaging the bacterial cell membranes and a fast release of silver ions. Furthermore, the in vivo rat skin infection model verifies that SWCNTs@mSiO 2 -TSD@Ag have remarkably improved abilities of bacterial clearance, wound healing promoting as well as outstanding biocompatibility. Therefore, this novel nanoplatform indicates promising potentials as a safe and powerful tool for the treatment of clinical drug-resistant infections.

Abstract:In this study, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) coated with catechol-conjugated chitosan (CSS) were prepared using green methods. Interestingly, we uncovered that CSS-coated Ag NPs (CSS-Ag NPs) exhibited a higher toxicity against gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria than against grampositive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria. The differences revealed that the CSS-Ag NPs killed gram bacteria with distinct, species-specific mechanisms. The aim of this study is to further investigate these underlying mechanisms through a series of analyses. The ultrastructure and morphology of the bacteria before and after treatment with CSS-Ag NPs were observed. The results demonstrated the CSS-Ag NPs killed gram-positive bacteria through a disorganization of the cell wall and leakage of cytoplasmic content. In contrast, the primary mechanism of action on gram-negative bacteria was a change in membrane permeability, induced by adsorption of CSS-Ag NPs. The species-specific mechanisms are caused by structural differences in the cell walls of gram bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria are protected from CSS-Ag NPs by a thicker cell wall, while gram-negatives are more easily killed due to an interaction between a special outer membrane and the nanoparticles. Our study offers an in-depth understanding of the antibacterial behaviors of CSS-Ag NPs and provides insights into ultimately optimizing the design of Ag NPs for treatment of bacterial infections.
Sustainable approach to synthesis of Carbon Dot/ Silver Nanoparticles for Biological Evaluation as Antimicrobial Agent

Abstract:Green synthesis of metal nanoparticles is an attractive substitute for traditional methods using capping and reducing chemicals. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesised using carbon dots (CDs) derived from bioresources as reducing, protecting, and stabilising agents in a single step using environmentally friendly and cost-effective synthetic methods. The optical and structural properties of prepared CD/AgNPs were explored using UV-vis (Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy), Fluorescence spectroscopy, XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering), SEM-EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy). The synthesised CD/AgNPs are stable as zeta potential value is -14.7mV. From TEM the particle size exhibited as ~12 nm. The prepared CD/AgNPs exhibited significant optical absorbance, good water dispersibility, stability and nano size. Also, CD/AgNPs revealed good biocidal effects against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli), Pseudomonas Aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), Gram-positive Staphylococcus Aureus (S. aureus), Bacillus Cereus (B. Cereus), and good anti-fungal activity against Aspergillus Niger (A. niger). The CD/AgNPs were further analyzed by live/dead assay. E. coli and A. niger with zone of inhibition around 3.1 and 40 mm, respectively when compared to ciprofloxacin (2.2 mm) and fluconazole (25 mm). The above investigation proved that the developed CD/AgNPs will be a new platform as an alternative to the traditional antibiotics for the generation of new kind of antibacterial materials and also provide the pathway for various metal/CD nanomaterials for diverse biomedical applications.

Abstract:AbstractCompelling concerns about antimicrobial resistance and the emergence of multidrug‐resistant pathogens call for novel strategies to address these challenges. Nanoparticles show promising antimicrobial activities; however, their actions are hindered primarily by the bacterial hydrophilic–hydrophobic barrier. To overcome this, we developed a method of electrochemically anchoring sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) coatings onto silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), resulting in improved antimicrobial potency. We then investigated the antimicrobial mechanisms and developed therapeutic applications. We demonstrated SDS‐coated AgNPs with anomalous dispersive properties capable of dispersing in both polar and nonpolar solvents and, further, detected significantly higher bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects compared to silver ions (Ag+). Cellular assays suggested multipotent disruptions targeting the bacterial membrane, evidenced by increasing lactate dehydrogenase, protein and sugar leakage, and consistent with results from the transcriptomic analysis. Notably, the amphiphilic characteristics of the AgNPs maintained robust antibacterial activities for a year at various temperatures, indicating long‐term efficacy as a potential disinfectant. In a murine model, the AgNPs showed considerable biocompatibility and could alleviate fatal Salmonella infections. Collectively, by gaining amphiphilic properties from SDS, we offer novel AgNPs against bacterial infections combined with long‐term and cost‐effective strategies.

Abstract:Antibiotics play an important role in the treatment of diseases, but bacterial resistance caused by their widespread and unreasonable use has become an urgent problem in clinical treatment. With the rapid advancement of nanoscience and nanotechnology, the development of nanomedicine has been transformed into a new approach to the problem of bacterial resistance. As a new type of carbon-based nanomaterial, carbon dots (CDs) have attracted the interest of antibacterial researchers due to their ease of preparation, amphiphilicity, facile surface functionalization, and excellent optical properties, among other properties. This article reviewed the synthesis methods and properties of various CDs and their composites in order to highlight the advancements in the field of CDs-based antibacterial agents. Then we focused on the relationship between the principal properties of CDs and the antibacterial mechanism, including the following: (1) The physical damage caused by the small size, amphiphilicity, and surface charge of CDs. (2) Photogenerated electron transfer characteristics of CDs that produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in themselves or in other compounds. The ability of ROS to oxidize can lead to the lipid peroxidation of cell membranes, as well as damage proteins and DNA. (3) The nanoenzyme properties of CDs can catalyze reactions that generate ROS. (4) Synergistic antibacterial effect of CDs and antibiotics or other nanocomposites. Finally, we look forward to the challenges that CDs-based nanocomposites face in practical antibacterial applications and propose corresponding solutions to further expand the application potential of nanomaterials in the treatment of infectious diseases, particularly drug-resistant bacterial infections.
Remarkably Improvement in Antibacterial Activity of Carbon Nanotubes by Hybridizing with Silver Nanodots

Abstract:In view of their super capacity of adsorbing microbial, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used as the carriers for in situ synthesizing well-dispersed and small-sized silver nanodots (AgND), to prepare a new type of antibacterial agent with remarkably improved activity. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) was introduced as a linkage for guaranteeing the as-generated AgND to be anchored onto the CNTs and to prevent them from agglomeration. The obtained hybridizing materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the results showed that the AgND with an average size of 2.6 nm were uniformly loaded on surfaces of CNTs. There existed special interactions between silver atoms and CNTs. The antibacterial activities of the as-prepared hybrids against Escherichia coli were evaluated by disk diffusion assay method and minimal inhibitory concentration measurements. The results showed that the as-prepared hybrids displayed a remarkable improvement in antibacterial activity as compared to CNTs, acidified-CNTs and even the identical silver amount of AgNO3 solution, which was mainly attributed to the small size of AgND and the hybridizing effect between AgND and CNTs.

Abstract:The emergence and global spread of bacterial resistance to conventionally used antibiotics have highlighted the urgent need for new antimicrobial agents that might replace antibiotics. Currently, nanomaterials hold considerable promise as antimicrobial agents in anti-inflammatory therapy. Due to their distinctive functional physicochemical characteristics and exceptional biocompatibility, carbon dots (CDs)-based composites have attracted a lot of attention in the context of these antimicrobial nanomaterials. Here, a thorough assessment of current developments in the field of antimicrobial CDs-based composites is provided, starting with a brief explanation of the general synthesis procedures, categorization, and physicochemical characteristics of CDs-based composites. The many processes driving the antibacterial action of these composites are then thoroughly described, including physical destruction, oxidative stress, and the incorporation of antimicrobial agents. Finally, the obstacles that CDs-based composites now suffer in combating infectious diseases are outlined and investigated, along with the potential applications of antimicrobial CDs-based composites.

Abstract:A new kind of amphiphilic carbon dots (CDs) was prepared with citric acid and silane coupling agent as raw materials. Due to the doping of nitrogen and silicon elements, the surface of CDs contains not only oxygen-containing functional groups, but also alkyl hydrophobic chains, showing amphiphilic characteristic. The micro molecular structure and elemental composition of CDs were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and other tests. The antibacterial behavior of CDs against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) was studied by the disk antibacterial method, plate colony, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and other methods. The biocompatibility of CDs was evaluated by cytotoxicity and hemolysis in vitro . The results proved that CDs possessed the average particle size of 1.75 nm and the negative surface potential of −2.71 mV. For E. coli and S. aureus , the minimum bactericidal concentrations of CDs were 500 μ g/mL and 400 μ g/mL, respectively. These co-doped CDs also possessed the ability to inhibit biofilm formation. The antibacterial mechanism was mainly through the adsorption force to rupture the bacterial membrane and induce the generation of reactive oxygen species in bacterial cells. In addition, CDs exhibited excellent biocompatibility because of their low cytotoxicity and hemolysis, indicating that they can be used as a new material in the antibacterial field.

Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are widely applied in antibacterial therapy owing to their distinct nanoscale structure, intrinsic peroxidase-like activities, and magnetic behavior. However, some deficiencies, such as the tendency to aggregate in water, unsatisfactory biocompatibility, and limited antibacterial effect, hindered their further clinical applications. Surface modification of MNPs is one of the main strategies to improve their (bio)physicochemical properties and enhance biological functions. Herein, antibacterial ε-poly (L-lysine) carbon dots (PL-CDs) modified MNPs (CMNPs) were synthesized to investigate their performance in eliminating pathogenic bacteria. It was found that the PL-CDs were successfully loaded on the surface of MNPs by detecting their morphology, surface charges, functional groups, and other physicochemical properties. The positively charged CMNPs show superparamagnetic properties and are well dispersed in water. Furthermore, bacterial experiments indicate that the CMNPs exhibited highly effective antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus . Notably, the in vitro cellular assays show that CMNPs have favorable cytocompatibility. Thus, CMNPs acting as novel smart nanomaterials could offer great potential for the clinical treatment of bacterial infections.

Silver peroxide-incorporated carbon dots with high photothermal performance for combating bacteria

Abstract:The widespread use of antibiotics often increases bacterial resistance. Herein, we reported a silver peroxide-incorporated carbon dots (defined as Ag2O2-CDs) with high photothermal conversion efficiency viain situoxidation process. The prepared Ag2O2-CDs exhibited ultra-small size of 2.0 nm and hybrid phase structure. Meanwhile, the Ag2O2-CDs were of a similar optical performance comparing with traditional carbon dots (CDs). Importantly, the incorporation of Ag2O2into CDs significantly enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency from 3.8% to 28.5%. By combining silver ion toxicity and photothermal ablation, the Ag2O2-CDs were capable of destroying gram-positive and gram-negative bacterium effectively. These findings demonstrated that the Ag2O2-CDs could be served as a potential antibacterial agent for clinical applications.
Nanosilver-decorated covalent organic frameworks for enhanced photodynamic, photothermal, and antibacterial properties

Abstract:Bacterial infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria pose an extremely serious treat to human health However, nanoscale antibacterial materials can effectively inhibit bacterial growth without inducing bacterial resistance. Herein, we have developed a highly effective antibacterial agent by immobilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) within a novel covalent organic framework (COF). The COF BDP/CD-S-3 -Ag system was synthesized in situ using BODIPY phoyosensitizer (BDP) and carbon quantum dots (CD-S-3) as precursors. The optimized COF BDP/CD-S-3 -Ag system exhibited excellent photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT). Importantly, the COF BDP/CD-S-3 -Ag system, with many active groups, can capture and kill bacteria effectively by interacting with them, thereby contributing to improved antibacterial efficacy. As expected, the designed COF BDP/CD-S-3 -Ag system combines the advantages of COF BDP/CD-S-3 (preventing the aggregation of AgNPs and having the ability to capture bacteria) and AgNPs (antibacterial ability), demonstrating excellent antibacterial efficacy. This study developed a new class of antibacterial materials and took an important step forward in promoting the application of COF-based antibacterial materials.

Abstract:In order to improve the antimicrobial activity of Ag nanomaterial and minimum their toxicity, cinnamic acid has been utilized as both reducing agent and protecting ligand to synthesis of silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs). The synthesized cinnamic acid (CA) functionalized Ag nanoparticles (CA-AgNPs) have been characterized by Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV), Fourier transform infrared absorption spectra (FTIR), Atomic force microscope (AFM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM). UV absorption results indicated that a strong absorption band peaked at 452 nm which can be ascribed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of AgNPs. FTIR results of CA-AgNPs indicated that cinnamic acid was indeed bound on the AgNPs. TEM measurements indicated that the products are round spherical NPs with the average particle size of 52.8 nm. Antimicrobial activity tests revealed that CA-AgNPs have significant inhibitory effects on E. coli and C. albicans. The CA-AgNPs prepared in this study are expected to be developed as efficient antimicrobial agents.
