Abstract:California has experienced enhanced extreme wildfire behaviour in recent years1-3, leading to substantial loss of life and property4,5. Some portion of the change in wildfire behaviour is attributable to anthropogenic climate warming, but formally quantifying this contribution is difficult because of numerous confounding factors6,7 and because wildfires are below the grid scale of global climate models. Here we use machine learning to quantify empirical relationships between temperature (as well as the influence of temperature on aridity) and the risk of extreme daily wildfire growth (>10,000 acres) in California and find that the influence of temperature on the risk is primarily mediated through its influence on fuel moisture. We use the uncovered relationships to estimate the changes in extreme daily wildfire growth risk under anthropogenic warming by subjecting historical fires from 2003 to 2020 to differing background climatological temperatures and aridity conditions. We find that the influence of anthropogenic warming on the risk of extreme daily wildfire growth varies appreciably on a fire-by-fire and day-by-day basis, depending on whether or not climate warming pushes conditions over certain thresholds of aridity, such as 1.5 kPa of vapour-pressure deficit and 10% dead fuel moisture. So far, anthropogenic warming has enhanced the aggregate expected frequency of extreme daily wildfire growth by 25% (5-95 range of 14-36%), on average, relative to preindustrial conditions. But for some fires, there was approximately no change, and for other fires, the enhancement has been as much as 461%. When historical fires are subjected to a range of projected end-of-century conditions, the aggregate expected frequency of extreme daily wildfire growth events increases by 59% (5-95 range of 47-71%) under a low SSP1-2.6 emissions scenario compared with an increase of 172% (5-95 range of 156-188%) under a very high SSP5-8.5 emissions scenario, relative to preindustrial conditions.

Abstract:Warmer temperatures and severe drought are driving increases in wildfire activity in the western United States, threatening forest ecosystems. However, identifying the influence of fire severity on tree cover loss is challenging using commonly used categorical metrics. In this study, we quantify regional trends in wildfire-driven tree cover loss as the product of annual burned area, average forest exposure (pre-fire tree cover), and average fire severity (relative loss of tree cover). We quantified these trends with Landsat-based 30 m resolution fire and tree cover datasets for California wildfires from 1986-2021. Rates of tree cover loss rose faster than trends in burned area, with the magnitude of tree cover area loss per unit of area burned increasing by 70% from 0.20 ± 0.05 during 1986-1996 to 0.34 ± 0.10 during 2011-2021. Forest exposure (pre-fire tree cover) within fires increased by 41% from a decadal mean of 23.4 ± 5.5% (1986-1996) to 33.1 ± 7.8% (2011-2021). Increasing forest exposure is associated with a recent expansion of fires in dense northern forests. Concurrently, fire severity (relative tree cover loss) rose by 30% from a decadal mean of 50.4 ± 7.2% during 1986-1996 to 65.6 ± 6.5% during 2011-2021. We developed and applied a simple conceptual framework to quantify the combined effect of wildfires affecting denser forests and burning more severely. The combined effect of these two processes contributed to nearly half (47%) of the tree cover loss since 1986, highlighting that recent changes in burned areas alone cannot explain observed tree cover trends. Linear regression analysis revealed that warmer summers and drier winters were significant drivers of increasing forest exposure, fire severity, and burned area (R2 from 0.54 to 0.80, p ≤ 0.001), particularly in the northern forests. Climate extremes had a disproportionate impact on dense forests that were once more resistant to wildfire but now face risks from a shifting wildfire regime.

Different historical fire–climate patterns in California

Abstract:The relationship between annual variation in area burned and seasonal temperatures and precipitation was investigated for the major climate divisions in California. Historical analyses showed marked differences in fires on montane and foothill landscapes. Based on roughly a century of data, there are five important lessons on fire–climate relationships in California: (1) seasonal variations in temperature appear to have had minimal influence on area burned in the lower elevation, mostly non-forested, landscapes; (2) temperature has been a significant factor in controlling fire activity in higher elevation montane forests, but this varied greatly with season – winter and autumn temperatures showed no significant effect, whereas spring and summer temperatures were important determinants of area burned; (3) current season precipitation has been a strong controller of fire activity in forests, with drier years resulting in greater area burned on most United States Forest Service (USFS) lands in the state, but the effect of current-year precipitation was decidedly less on lower elevation California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection lands; (4) in largely grass-dominated foothills and valleys the magnitude of prior-year rainfall was positively tied to area burned in the following year, and we hypothesise that this is tied to greater fuel volume in the year following high rainfall. In the southern part of the state this effect has become stronger in recent decades and this likely is due to accelerated type conversion from shrubland to grassland in the latter part of the 20th century; (5) the strongest fire–climate models were on USFS lands in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and these explained 42–52% of the variation in area burned; however, the models changed over time, with winter and spring precipitation being the primary drivers in the first half of the 20th century, but replaced by spring and summer temperatures after 1960.

Abstract:Moisture delivery in California is largely regulated by the strength and position of the North Pacific jet stream (NPJ), winter high-altitude winds that influence regional hydroclimate and forest fire during the following warm season. We use climate model simulations and paleoclimate data to reconstruct winter NPJ characteristics back to 1571 CE to identify the influence of NPJ behavior on moisture and forest fire extremes in California before and during the more recent period of fire suppression. Maximum zonal NPJ velocity is lower and northward shifted and has a larger latitudinal spread during presuppression dry and high-fire extremes. Conversely, maximum zonal NPJ is higher and southward shifted, with narrower latitudinal spread during wet and low-fire extremes. These NPJ, precipitation, and fire associations hold across pre-20th-century socioecological fire regimes, including Native American burning, postcontact disruption and native population decline, and intensification of forest use during the later 19th century. Precipitation extremes and NPJ behavior remain linked in the 20th and 21st centuries, but fire extremes become uncoupled due to fire suppression after 1900. Simulated future conditions in California include more wet-season moisture as rain (and less as snow), a longer fire season, and higher temperatures, leading to drier fire-season conditions independent of 21st-century precipitation changes. Assuming continuation of current fire management practices, thermodynamic warming is expected to override the dynamical influence of the NPJ on climate-fire relationships controlling fire extremes in California. Recent widespread fires in California in association with wet extremes may be early evidence of this change.

Abstract:Abstract Floods caused by atmospheric rivers and wildfires fanned by Santa Ana winds are common occurrences in California with devastating societal impacts. Planning for these types of events is critical to protect life and property, and extending the lead-times of predictability for these types of events improves emergency response. A better understanding of linkages between large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns and extreme weather represents an important step towards improving predictability and preparedness on subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) timescales and for climate change adaptation. In this work, we show that winter weather variability in California, including the occurrence of extreme and impactful events, is linked to four atmospheric circulation regimes over the North Pacific Ocean previously named and identified as the “NP4 modes”. These modes interact on daily timescales to produce recurring winter weather patterns that are major drivers of atmospheric river landfalls, Santa Ana winds, floods, and wildfires. Many recent California natural hazard events resulted from compounding and cascading extremes including frequent atmospheric river landfalls (wet, fuel-producing years) or lack thereof (drought) and followed by Sana Ana-driven wildfires that render the landscape susceptible to hydrologic hazards posed by short-duration high-intensity precipitation events. This historical perspective of atmospheric circulation and impacts over 70 years reveals that weather patterns are changing in a way that enhances wildfire risk in California, while the frequency of weather patterns linked to historical floods is not diminishing. These changes highlight the rising hazards of compounding weather extremes in California’s present and future.

Abstract:Wildfire sizes and proportions burned with high severity effects are increasing in seasonally dry forests, especially in the western USA. A critical need in efforts to restore or maintain these forest ecosystems is to determine where fuel build-up caused by fire exclusion reaches thresholds that compromise resilience to fire. Empirical studies identifying drivers of fire severity patterns in actual wildfires can be confounded by co-variation of vegetation and topography and the stochastic effects of weather and rarely consider long-term changes in fuel caused by fire exclusion. To overcome these limitations, we used a spatially explicit fire model (FlamMap) to compare potential fire behavior by topographic position in Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO), California, a large (43,000 ha), mountainous, unlogged landscape with extensive historical and contemporary fuels data. Fuel loads were uniformly distributed and incrementally increased across the landscape, meaning variation in fire behavior within each simulation was due to topography and among simulations, to fuels. We analyzed changes in fire line intensity (FLI) and crown fire potential as surface and canopy fuels increased from historical to contemporary levels and with percentile and actual wildfire weather conditions. Sensitivity to the influence of fuel build-up on fire behavior varied by topographic position. Steep slopes and ridges were most sensitive. At lower surface fuel loads, under pre-exclusion and contemporary canopy conditions, fire behavior was comparable and remained surface-type. As fuels increased, FLI and passive crown fire increased on steep slopes and ridgetops but remained largely unchanged on gentle slopes. Topographic variability in fire behavior was greatest with intermediate fuels. At higher surface fuel loads, under contemporary canopy fuels, passive crown fire dominated all topographic positions. With LAVO's current surface fuels, the area with potential for passive crown fire during actual fire weather increased from 6% pre-exclusion to 34% due to canopy fuel build-up. For topographically diverse landscapes, the results highlight where contemporary fire characteristics are most likely to deviate from historical patterns and may help managers prioritize locations for prescribed burning and managed wildfire to increase fire resilience in fuel rich landscapes.
WRF simulation over complex terrain during a southern California wildfire event

Abstract:In October 2007, the largest wildfire-related evacuation in California's history occurred as severe wildfires broke out across southern California. Smoke from these wildfires contributed to elevated pollutant concentrations in the atmosphere, affecting air quality in a vast region of the western United States. High-resolution numerical simulations were performed using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model to understand the atmospheric conditions during the wildfire episode and how the complex circulation patterns might affect smoke transport and dispersion. The simulated meteorological fields were validated using surface and upper air observations in California and Nevada. To distinguish the performance of the WRF in different geographic regions, the surface stations were grouped into coastal sites, valley and basin sites, and mountain sites, and the results for the three categories were analyzed and intercompared. For temperature and moisture, the mountain category has the best agreement with the observations, while the coastal category was the worst. For wind, the model performance for the three categories was very similar. The flow patterns over complex terrain were also analyzed under different synoptic conditions and the possible impact of the terrain on smoke and pollutant pathways is analyzed by employing a Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Model. When high mountains prevent the smoke from moving inland, the mountain passes act as active pathways for smoke transport; meanwhile, chimney effect helps inject the pollutants to higher levels, where they are transported regionally. The results highlight the role of complex topography in the assessment of the possible smoke transport patterns in the region.

Abstract:Farmers and ranchers living in snow mountainous regions heavily rely on melting snow for agricultural irrigation. However, major natural disturbances, such as wildfires, have markedly reduced melt durations, disrupting the local hydrological cycle. In this study, we estimate the impacts of wildfires on snow accumulation and retention in the San Joaquin watershed of Sierra Nevada around California during the 2000 to 2016 water year through spatiotemporal visual variations in the snow water equivalent (SWE). To better explore the relationship between SWE and wildfire, machine learning methods, including regression analysis and deep analytics, were performed to examine the original remote sensing dataset of SWE in the San Joaquin watershed. The results suggested that wildfires have greatly increased the speed of snowmelt and shortened the timing of water availability, which may result in water resource shortages. We also comparatively analyzed the peak SWE values in each year, in which two water year groups (group (1): 2000–2003, group (2): 2013–2016) were selected and compared based on the frequency of major wildfires. Interestingly, higher fluctuations in SWE curves were observed from 2010 to 2016 than from 2000 to 2003, which suggested that the frequency of wildfires was much higher in recent years than in the past twenty years. Ultimately, the correlation between fire severity and SWE values was determined to be strongly positive ( p < 0.05). Overall, our study provides visual-mathematical perspectives for local ecology management authorities to understand the most related factors behind the shortened melt duration.

Abstract:Habitat mosaics due to shrub establishment in mixed conifer forest after fire creates high spatial heterogeneity at broader scales. However, reburned patches from high to high and low and moderate to low and moderate severities have less spatial heterogeneity. Under climate change‐induced increase in wildfire within short return interval, conifer regeneration within large stand‐replaced patches is uncertain. Aims Prolonged fire suppression in conifer forests of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, California, USA, has led to ingrowth of conifer seedlings, converting the open heterogeneous structure into uniformly dense and layered forest. The threat of a stand‐replacing fire has increased because of fuel buildup in combination with rising drought and extreme heat frequency caused by climate change. With such high severity fire, there is also rising concern regarding conifer forest converting to shrublands as severe fire favors the establishment of large shrub patches altering landscape vegetation pattern and heterogeneity. However, a clear understanding of the effects of increased fire severity, size, and frequency on landscape‐scale heterogeneity and postfire patch dynamics is lacking, which is critical in implementing restoration and forest management activities. Our aim was to understand multiscale dynamics and spatial heterogeneity patterns of conifer forests and chaparral shrublands due to repeated mixed‐severity fire. Location A mosaic of burned and unburned patches spanning the boundary of Lassen and Plumas National Forests, CA, USA. Methods We used secondary geospatial landcover data classified by cover type before modern fires (1999) and after eight modern fires (2014). We calculated various landscape diversity and fragmentation metrics at patch and landscape scales using FRAGSTATS for comparison before and after fires. Results At the fire severity patch scale, high‐severity fire reduced vegetation cover type heterogeneity by half, but reburning at low to moderate severity nearly doubled cover type heterogeneity. At the full landscape scale mixed‐severity fire, including all burn severities, increased vegetation cover type heterogeneity. Fragmentation indexes confirmed that fire created larger patches of shrub and fragmented patches of conifer forest. Conclusions The effects of frequent large fire events on vegetation pattern and heterogeneity vary with the scale of analysis. Hence, heterogeneity and vegetation pattern change need to be evaluated at more than one scale to understand past and future ecological processes before prioritizing management actions for the conifer forests of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.

Abstract:<p>Recent long and intensive wildfire seasons in many regions have highlighted the urgency to understand the shift in worldwide fire regimes, raising the question if human induced climate change has played a role therein. However, attributing changes in fire to anthropogenic climate change is difficult, since possible signals are confounded by multiple drivers including fire weather, fuel availability and sources of ignition. Therefore, fire indices or individual input variables are often used as proxies. There have been some attempts to model drivers of recent trends in fire, though assessment of overall anthropogenic climate change is still lacking. Recent integration of fire models into ISIMIP now allow us to perform a fire impact attribution analysis using multiple coupled fire-vegetation models. Here, we combine both ISIMIP factual and counterfactual simulations with remote sensed observations to understand how burnt area has changed over the historical period due to a changing climate.</p>
Opposite Anomalous Synoptic Patterns for Potential California Large Wildfire Spread and Extinguishing in 2018 Cases

Abstract:The consecutive occurrence of three large wildfires in 1 year is rarely seen in northern California including the deadliest case during 8-25 November 2018 in Butte County. They happened under favorable fuel and meteorological conditions including long-term warming trends, normal summer-autumn warm-dry climate, and extreme heated air masses with strong offshore wind. The former two meteorological conditions contribute a background for large wildfires but extreme heated air masses and strong offshore winds are critical potentials for a fire spread. The relationship between extreme heated/cooled air masses and the three large wildfires was carefully examined from their starts to extinguishing. An anomaly-based synoptic analysis method is used by separating atmospheric variables into climatology and anomalies. A 3-dimensional anomalous synoptic pattern of atmospheric variables is established for the three wildfire cases in 2018. The analysis showed that one anomalous warm-air mass in the mid-to-low troposphere dynamically associated with a positive center of geopotential height (GPH) anomalies at the upper troposphere (150-300 hPa) is an anomalous synoptic pattern indicating a potential large wildfire spread, and conversely by negative anomalies when the fires were extinguished. The ECMWF model seems to be capable of predicting such anomalous temperature-pressure patterns to indicate possible fire spread and extinguishing.
Response of Land Surface Albedo to Fire Disturbance in the Sierra Nevada Seasonal Snow Zone Over the MODIS Record

Abstract:Wildfires in the snow zone can brighten winter and spring landscapes by removing forest canopy, revealing underlying snow cover. Land surface albedo (LSA) alterations associated with transitioning from a canopied, snow‐hiding vegetation regime to a snow‐revealing landscape have impacts on the surface energy balance, with implications for climate and water supply. Forest fires are increasing in frequency, size, and elevation, but the change in LSA due to fire in the seasonal snow zone (SSZ) is poorly understood. This study addresses this knowledge gap for the Sierra Nevada, where recent climatic changes have contributed to droughts, earlier and more rapidly declining snowpacks, and worsening wildfire impacts. Remotely sensed snow fraction and LSA data from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer were used to assess the impact of wildfire on landscapes in the Sierra Nevada SSZ by comparing LSA in burn scars to unburned control areas and the historical average LSA, then quantifying the surface radiative forcing (RF) associated with change in LSA. Among high and moderate burn severity fires, winter LSA varied depending on snow cover, land characteristics, and burn severity, ranging from 0.12 in low‐snow fire scars to 0.47 in snow‐covered fire scars. This study adds to understanding of how landscapes respond to wildfires and the subsequent impacts on the surface energy balance.

Abstract:Abstract Extreme wildfires are increasing in frequency globally, prompting new efforts to mitigate risk. The ecological appropriateness of risk mitigation strategies, however, depends on what factors are driving these increases. While regional syntheses attribute increases in fire activity to both climate change and fuel accumulation through fire exclusion, they have not disaggregated causal drivers at scales where land management is implemented. Recent advances in fire regime modeling can help us understand which drivers dominate at management-relevant scales. We conducted fire regime simulations using historical climate and fire exclusion scenarios across two watersheds in the Inland Northwestern U.S., which occur at different positions along an aridity continuum. In one watershed, climate change was the key driver increasing burn probability and the frequency of large fires; in the other, fire exclusion dominated in some locations. We also demonstrate that some areas become more fuel-limited as fire-season aridity increases due to climate change. Thus, even within watersheds, fuel management must be spatially and temporally explicit to optimize effectiveness. To guide management, we show that spatial estimates of soil aridity (or temporally averaged soil moisture) can provide a relatively simple, first-order indicator of where in a watershed fire regime is climate vs. fuel-limited and where fire regimes are most vulnerable to change.

Increasing frequency and intensity of the most extreme wildfires on Earth

Abstract:Climate change is exacerbating wildfire conditions, but evidence is lacking for global trends in extreme fire activity itself. Here we identify energetically extreme wildfire events by calculating daily clusters of summed fire radiative power using 21 years of satellite data, revealing that the frequency of extreme events (≥99.99th percentile) increased by 2.2-fold from 2003 to 2023, with the last 7 years including the 6 most extreme. Although the total area burned on Earth may be declining, our study highlights that fire behaviour is worsening in several regions—particularly the boreal and temperate conifer biomes—with substantial implications for carbon storage and human exposure to wildfire disasters.

The impact of land ownership, firefighting, and reserve status on fire probability in California

Abstract:The extent of wildfires in the western United States is increasing, but how land ownership, firefighting, and reserve status influence fire probability is unclear. California serves as a unique natural experiment to estimate the impact of these factors, as ownership is split equally between federal and non-federal landowners; there is a relatively large proportion of reserved lands where extractive uses are prohibited and fire suppression is limited; and land ownership and firefighting responsibility are purposefully not always aligned. Panel Poisson regression techniques and pre-regression matching were used to model changes in annual fire probability from 1950–2015 on reserve and non-reserve lands on federal and non-federal ownerships across four vegetation types: forests, rangelands, shrublands, and forests without commercial species. Fire probability was found to have increased over time across all 32 categories. A marginal effects analysis showed that federal ownership and firefighting was associated with increased fire probability, and that the difference in fire probability on federal versus non-federal lands is increasing over time. Ownership, firefighting, and reserve status, played roughly equal roles in determining fire probability, and were found to have much greater influence than average maximum temperature (°C) during summer months (June, July, August), average annual precipitation (cm), and average annual topsoil moisture content by volume, demonstrating the critical role these factors play in western fire regimes and the importance of including them in future analysis focused on understanding and predicting wildfire in the Western United States.

Abstract:Southern California is a biodiversity hotspot and home to over 23 million people. Over recent decades the annual wildfire area in the coastal southern California region has not significantly changed. Yet how fire regime will respond to future anthropogenic climate change remains an important question. Here, we estimate wildfire probability in southern California at station scale and daily resolution using random forest algorithms and downscaled earth system model simulations. We project that large fire days will increase from 36 days/year during 1970–1999 to 58 days/year under moderate greenhouse gas emission scenario (RCP4.5) and 71 days/year by 2070–2099 under a high emission scenario (RCP8.5). The large fire season will be more intense and have an earlier onset and delayed end. Our findings suggest that despite the lack of a contemporary trend in fire regime, projected greenhouse gas emissions will substantially increase the fire danger in southern California by 2099. More frequent large wildfires and a lengthening of the fire season in southern California are projected under future emission and climate scenarios, according to machine learning and climate model projections.

Abstract:Wildfires are unplanned and dynamic fires that occur in areas of combustible vegetation. They can be natural or human-induced and play a vital role in ecosystem health. The severity and intensity of wildfires can change over time based on the weather, available fuel and topography. California is continuously experiencing longer wildfire seasons as a direct result of climate change, affecting the forest structure of the state’s forest. Forest basal area is used to determine forest stand density and is an indicator of annual growth potential (Nix, 2020). It is often used as the basis for making important forest management decisions. My research will determine how wildfire frequency and extent have affected the basal area of Northern and Southern California’s forests in 2000 and 2017. Fire perimeter and frequency data obtained from the United States Forest Service regional datasets website will be used to define fire characteristics in the regions. Tree basal area data obtained from the United States Forest Service regional-level datasets website will be used to quantify the basal area of critical forest types. Percent change in basal area, fire frequency and acres burned each year will be determined to compare the burn regimes of the two regions during the two years to see how that has impacted the forest’s basal area. The findings will give an idea of how the rate of wildfires has changed in the last two decades and its subsequent impacts, which can help us better prepare for the future of forests in an ongoing climate crisis.
Human exposure and sensitivity to globally extreme wildfire events

Abstract:Extreme wildfires have substantial economic, social and environmental impacts, but there is uncertainty whether such events are inevitable features of the Earth's fire ecology or a legacy of poor management and planning. We identify 478 extreme wildfire events defined as the daily clusters of fire radiative power from MODIS, within a global 10 × 10 km lattice, between 2002 and 2013, which exceeded the 99.997th percentile of over 23 million cases of the ΣFRP 100 km-2 in the MODIS record. These events are globally distributed across all flammable biomes, and are strongly associated with extreme fire weather conditions. Extreme wildfire events reported as being economically or socially disastrous (n = 144) were concentrated in suburban areas in flammable-forested biomes of the western United States and southeastern Australia, noting potential biases in reporting and the absence of globally comprehensive data of fire disasters. Climate change projections suggest an increase in days conducive to extreme wildfire events by 20 to 50% in these disaster-prone landscapes, with sharper increases in the subtropical Southern Hemisphere and European Mediterranean Basin.

Abstract:The Klamath-Siskiyou region of northwestern California and southwestern Oregon supports globally outstanding temperate biodiversity. Fire has been important in the evolutionary history that shaped this diversity, but recent human influences have altered the fire environment. We tested for modern human impacts on the fire regime by analyzing temporal patterns in fire extent and spatial patterns of fire severity in relation to vegetation structure, past fire occurrence, roads, and timber management in a 98,814-ha area burned in 1987. Fire severity was mapped by the US. Department of Agriculture Forest Service as low, moderate, and high based on levels of canopy scorch and consumption. We found (1) a trend of increasing fire size in recent decades; (2) that overall fire-severity proportions were 59% low, 29% moderate, and 12% high, which is comparable to both contemporary and historic fires in the region; (3) that multiaged, closed forests, the predominant vegetation, burned with much lower severity than did open forest and shrubby nonforest vegetation; (4) that considerably less high-severity fire occurred where fire bad previously be absent since 1920 in closed forests compared to where the forests had burned since 1920 (7% vs. 16%); (5) that nonforest vegetation burned with greater severity where there was a history of fire since 1920 and in roaded areas; and (6) that tree plantations experienced twice as much severe fire as multi-aged forests. We concluded that fuel buildup in the absence of fire did not cause increased fire severity as hypothesized. Instead, fuel that is receptive to combustion may decrease in the long absence of fire in the closed forests of our study area, which will favor the fire regime that has maintained these forests. However, plantations are now found in one-third of the roaded landscape. Together with warming climate, this may increase the size and severity of future fires, favoring further establishment of structurally and biologically simple plantations.
