Abstract:Let $M$ be a $\lambda$-indexed (that is, Jensen indexed) premouse. We prove that $M$ is iterable with respect to standard $\lambda$-iteration rules iff $M$ is iterable with respect to a natural version of Mitchell-Steel iteration rules. Using this equivalence, we describe a background construction for $\lambda$-indexed mice, analogous to traditional background constructions for Mitchell-Steel indexed mice, and which absorbs Woodin cardinals from the background universe. We also prove some facts regarding the correspondence between standard iteration trees and u-iteration trees on premice with Mitchell-Steel indexing.

Abstract:We show that (i) the standard fine structural properties for premice follow from normal iterability (whereas the classical proof relies on iterability for stacks of normal trees), and (ii) every mouse which is finitely generated above its projectum, is an iterate of its core. That is, let $m$ be an integer and let $M$ be an $m$-sound, $(m,\omega_1+1)$-iterable premouse. Then (i) $M$ is $(m+1)$-solid and $(m+1)$-universal, $(m+1)$ condensation holds for $M$, and if $m\geq 1$ then $M$ is super-Dodd-sound, a slight strengthening of Dodd-soundness. And (ii) if there is $x\in M$ such that $M$ is the $\mathrm{r}\Sigma_{m+1}$-hull of parameters in $\rho_{m+1}^M\cup\{x\}$, then $M$ is a normal iterate of its $(m+1)$-core $C=\mathfrak{C}_{m+1}(M)$; in fact, there is an $m$-maximal iteration tree $\mathcal{T}$ on $C$, of finite length, such that $M=M^{\mathcal{T}}_\infty$, and $i^{\mathcal{T}}_{0\infty}$ is just the core embedding. Applying fact (ii), we prove that if $M\models\mathrm{ZFC}$ is a mouse and $W\subseteq M$ is a ground of $M$ via a strategically $\sigma$-closed forcing $\mathbb{P}\in W$, and if $M|\aleph_1^M\in W$ (that is, the initial segment of $M$ of height $\aleph_1^M$ is in $W$), then the forcing is trivial; that is, $M\subseteq W$. And if there is a measurable cardinal, then there is a non-solid premouse. The results hold for premice with Mitchell-Steel indexing, allowing extenders of superstrong type to appear on the extender sequence.

Abstract:We investigate Steel's conjecture in 'The Core Model Iterability Problem', that if $W$ and $R$ are $\Omega+1$-iterable, $1$-small weasels, then $W\leq^{*}R$ iff there is a club $C\subset\Omega$ such that for all $\alpha\in C$, if $\alpha$ is regular, then the cardinal successor of $\alpha$ in $W$ is less or equal than the cardinal successor of $\alpha$ in $R$ . We will show that the conjecture fails, assuming that there is an iterable premouse which models $KP$ and which has a $\Sigma_{1}$-Woodin cardinal. On the other hand, we show that assuming there is no transitive model of $KP$ with a Woodin cardinal the conjecture holds. In the course of this we will also show that if $M$ is an iterable admissible premouse with a largest, regular, uncountable cardinal $\delta$, and $\mathbb{P}$ is a forcing poset with the $\delta$-c.c. in $M$, and $g$ is $M$-generic, but not necessarily $\Sigma_{1}$-generic, $M[g]$ is a model of $KP$. Moreover, if $M$ is such a mouse and $T$ is maximal normal iteration tree on $M$ such that $T$ is non-dropping on its main branch, then $M_{\infty}^{T}$ is again an iterable admissible premouse with a largest regular and uncountable cardinal. At last we answer another open question from 'The Core Model Iterability Problem' regarding the S-hull property.

Abstract:Assume ZF + AD + $V=L(\mathbb{R})$. We prove some "mouse set" theorems, for definability over $J_\alpha(\mathbb{R})$ where $[\alpha,\alpha]$ is a projective-like gap (of $L(\mathbb{R})$) and $\alpha$ is either a successor ordinal or has countable cofinality, but $\alpha\neq\beta+1$ where $\beta$ ends a strong gap. For such ordinals $\alpha$ and integers $n\geq 1$, we show that there is a mouse $M$ with $\mathbb{R}\cap M=\mathrm{OD}_{\alpha n}$. The proof involves an analysis of ladder mice and their generalizations to $J_\alpha(\mathbb{R})$. This analysis is related to earlier work of Rudominer, Woodin and Steel on ladder mice. However, it also yields a new proof of the mouse set theorem even at the least point where ladder mice arise -- one which avoids the stationary tower. The analysis also yields a corresponding "anti-correctness" result on a cone, generalizing facts familiar in the projective hierarchy; for example, that $(\Pi^1_3)^V\upharpoonright M_1$ truth is $(\Sigma^1_3)^{M_1}$-definable and $(\Sigma^1_3)^{M_1}$ truth is $(\Pi^1_3)^V\upharpoonright M_1$-definable. We also define and study versions of ladder mice on a cone at the end of weak gap, and at the successor of the end of a strong gap, and an anti-correctness result on a cone there.

The Mouse Set Theorem Just Past Projective

Abstract:We identify a particular mouse, $M^{\text{ld}}$, the minimal ladder mouse, that sits in the mouse order just past $M_n^{\sharp}$ for all $n$, and we show that $\mathbb{R}\cap M^{\text{ld}} = Q_{\omega+1}$, the set of reals that are $\Delta^1_{\omega+1}$ in a countable ordinal. Thus $Q_{\omega+1}$ is a mouse set. This is analogous to the fact that $\mathbb{R}\cap M^{\sharp}_1 = Q_3$ where $M^{\sharp}_1$ is the the sharp for the minimal inner model with a Woodin cardinal, and $Q_3$ is the set of reals that are $\Delta^1_3$ in a countable ordinal. More generally $\mathbb{R}\cap M^{\sharp}_{2n+1} = Q_{2n+3}$. The mouse $M^{\text{ld}}$ and the set $Q_{\omega+1}$ compose the next natural pair to consider in this series of results. Thus we are proving the mouse set theorem just past projective. Some of this is not new. $\mathbb{R}\cap M^{\text{ld}} \subseteq Q_{\omega+1}$ was known in the 1990's. But $Q_{\omega+1} \subseteq M^{\text{ld}}$ was open until Woodin found a proof in 2018. The main goal of this paper is to give Woodin's proof.

Abstract:Assume ZF + AD + V=L(R). Let $[\alpha,\beta]$ be a $\Sigma_1$ gap with $J_\alpha(R)$ admissible. We analyze $J_\beta(R)$ as a natural form of ``derived model'' of a premouse $P$, where $P$ is found in a generic extension of $V$. In particular, we will have $\mathcal{P}(R)\cap J_\beta(R)=\mathcal{P}(R)\cap D$, and if $J_\beta(R)\models$``$\Theta$ exists'', then $J_\beta(R)$ and $D$ in fact have the same universe. This analysis will be employed in further work, yet to appear, toward a resolution of a conjecture of Rudominer and Steel on the nature of $(L(R))^M$, for $\omega$-small mice $M$. We also establish some preliminary work toward this conjecture in the present paper.

The Image of the Process Interpretation of Regular Expressions is Not Closed under Bisimulation Collapse

Abstract:Axiomatization and expressibility problems for Milner's process semantics (1984) of regular expressions modulo bisimilarity have turned out to be difficult for the full class of expressions with deadlock 0 and empty step~1. We report on a phenomenon that arises from the added presence of 1 when 0 is available, and that brings a crucial reason for this difficulty into focus. To wit, while interpretations of 1-free regular expressions are closed under bisimulation collapse, this is not the case for the interpretations of arbitrary regular expressions. Process graph interpretations of 1-free regular expressions satisfy the loop existence and elimination property LEE, which is preserved under bisimulation collapse. These features of LEE were applied for showing that an equational proof system for 1-free regular expressions modulo bisimilarity is complete, and that it is decidable in polynomial time whether a process graph is bisimilar to the interpretation of a 1-free regular expression. While interpretations of regular expressions do not satisfy the property LEE in general, we show that LEE can be recovered by refined interpretations as graphs with 1-transitions refined interpretations with 1-transitions (which are similar to silent steps for automata). This suggests that LEE can be expedient also for the general axiomatization and expressibility problems. But a new phenomenon emerges that needs to be addressed: the property of a process graph `to can be refined into a process graph with 1-transitions and with LEE' is not preserved under bisimulation collapse. We provide a 10-vertex graph with two 1-transitions that satisfies LEE, and in which a pair of bisimilar vertices cannot be collapsed on to each other while preserving the refinement property. This implies that the image of the process interpretation of regular expressions is not closed under bisimulation collapse.

Abstract:We develop the theory of abstract fine structural operators and operator-premice. We identify properties, which we require of operator-premice and operators, which ensure that certain basic facts about standard premice generalize. We define fine condensation for operators $\mathcal{F}$ and show that fine condensation and iterability together ensure that $\mathcal{F}$-mice have the fundamental fine structural properties including universality and solidity of the standard parameter.

Abstract:We prove an iteration theorem which guarantees for a wide class of nice iterations of $\omega_1$-preserving forcings that $\omega_1$ is not collapse, at the price of needing large cardinals to burn as fuel. More precisely, we show that a nice iteration of $\omega_1$-preserving forcings which force SRP at successor steps and preserves old stationary sets does not collapse $\omega_1$.

Abstract:We give a construction of scales (in the descriptive set theoretic sense) directly from mouse existence hypotheses, without using any determinacy arguments. The construction is related to the Martin-Solovay construction for scales on $\Pi^1_2$ sets. The prewellorders of the scales compare reals $x$ and $y$ by comparing features of certain kinds of fully backgrounded $L[E,x]$- and $L[E,y]$-constructions executed in mice $P$ with $x,y \in P$. In this way we produce an inner model theoretic proof of the scale property for many pointclasses, for which the scale property was classically established using determinacy arguments (for example, $\Pi^1_3$). Moreover, it also yields many further pointclasses with the scale property, for example intermediate between $\Pi^1_{2n+1}$ and $\Sigma^1_{2n+2}$, and also instances of complexity well beyond projective.

Abstract:Let $R$ be the class of regular cardinals which are not hyperinaccessible. We show that $L[R]$, and similar inner models in the $\alpha$-inaccessible hierarchy, can be generated by iterating a small "machete" mouse up through all the ordinals, and then taking a generic extension by a hyperclass Magidor iteration of Prikry forcings. We then show that such simple mice are themselves elements of $L[\mathsf{Reg}]$.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the failure of the unique branch hypothesis (UBH) for tame trees (see \rdef{tame iteration tree}) implies that in some homogenous generic extension of $V$ there is a transitive model $M$ containing $Ord \cup \mathbb{R}$ such that $M\vDash AD^+ + \Theta > \theta_0$. In particular, this implies the existence (in $V$) of a non-tame mouse. The results of this paper significantly extend Steel's earlier results from \cite{steel2002core} for tame trees.

Abstract:In 1984, Wim Ruitenburg published a surprising result about periodic sequences in intuitionistic propositional calculus (IPC). The property established by Ruitenburg naturally generalizes local finiteness (intuitionistic logic is not locally finite, even in a single variable). However, one of the two main goals of this note is to illustrate that most "natural" non-classical logics failing local finiteness also do not enjoy the periodic sequence property; IPC is quite unique in separating these properties. The other goal of this note is to present a Coq formalization of Ruitenburg's heavily syntactic proof. Apart from ensuring its correctness, the formalization allows extraction of a program providing a certified implementation of Ruitenburg's algorithm.

Abstract:We construct a new class of finite dimensional indecomposable representations of simple superalgebras which may explain, in a natural way, the existence of the heavier elementary particles. In type I Lie superalgebras sl(m/n) and osp(2/2n), one of the Dynkin weights labeling the finite dimensional irreducible representations is continuous. Taking the derivative, we show how to construct indecomposable representations recursively embedding N copies of the original irreducible representation, coupled by generalized Cabibbo angles, as observed among the three generations of leptons and quarks of the standard model. The construction is then generalized in the appendix to quasi-reductive Lie superalgebras.

Abstract:We introduce and elaborate a novel formalism for the manipulation and analysis of proofs as objects in a global manner. In this first approach the formalism is restricted to first-order problems characterized by condensed detachment. It is applied in an exemplary manner to a coherent and comprehensive formal reconstruction and analysis of historical proofs of a widely-studied problem due to Łukasiewicz. The underlying approach opens the door towards new systematic ways of generating lemmas in the course of proof search to the effects of reducing the search effort and finding shorter proofs. Among the numerous reported experiments along this line, a proof of Łukasiewicz's problem was automatically discovered that is much shorter than any proof found before by man or machine.

Rewriting and Inductive Reasoning

Abstract:Rewriting techniques based on reduction orderings generate "just enough" consequences to retain first-order completeness. This is ideal for superposition-based first-order theorem proving, but for at least one approach to inductive reasoning we show that we are missing crucial consequences. We therefore extend the superposition calculus with rewriting-based techniques to generate sufficient consequences for automating induction in saturation. When applying our work within the unit-equational fragment, our experiments with the theorem prover Vampire show significant improvements for inductive reasoning.
