Abstract:Ultrahigh‐nickel layered oxides LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 (x ≥ 0.9, x + y + z = 1) have been extensively studied for their high energy density and reasonable cost. However, with the increase of nickel content, structural instability and side reactions at the electrolyte-electrode interface appear, which seriously affect the long-term cycling stability of LIBs. In this study, Ga 3+ and Ti 4+ cations were successfully introduced into the NCM primary particles, and Li 3 PO 4 was used to modify the grain boundaries in the secondary particles to obtain a highly stable ultrahigh-Ni cathode (NCMGT@LPO2). First-principles calculations (DFT) and various characterizations showed that the pillar effects of Ga and Ti alleviate the H2-H3 phase transition, maintain the stability of lattice oxygen, and enhance the Li + transport rate. Li 3 PO 4 can slow down the generation of intergranular cracks along the grain boundaries in the secondary particles. The discharge specific capacity of NCMGT@LPO2 cathode material was 189.7 mAh g −1 in the voltage range of 2.7–4.3 V, and the capacity retention reached 85.9 % after 200 cycles at 1C (25 °C). At high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V, the initial discharge specific capacity of NCMGT@LPO2 was 226.6 mAh g −1 at 0.2C, and a remarkably large discharge capacity of 146.7 mAh g −1 was achieved at 10C (25 °C). Moreover, even at 50 °C, NCMGT@LPO2 exhibited initial discharge capacity of 202.9 mAh g −1 , and 26 % of the initial capacity loss after 200 cycles at 1 C. The synergies of dual doping and grain boundary modification enhanced the electrochemical performance and thermal stability of NCM.
