Abstract:In this sixth part we study rank $3$ reflection groups not well generated: $G(2r,r,2)$, $G_{12}$, $G_{13}$ and $G_{22}$. We start from a reflection representation of a rank $3$ Coxeter group and we show that we can obtain in this manner affine Coxeter groups whose linear part is one of the preceding groups.

Abstract:Let $W$ be a finite Coxeter group. We classify the reflection subgroups of $W$ up to conjugacy and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the map that assigns to a reflection subgroup $R$ of $W$ the conjugacy class of its Coxeter elements to be injective, up to conjugacy.

Abstract:Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group W with Coxeter number h, we call a Coxeter element any regular element (in the sense of Springer) of order h in W; this is a slight extension of the most common notion of Coxeter element. We show that the class of these Coxeter elements forms a single orbit in W under the action of reflection automorphisms. For Coxeter and Shephard groups, this implies that an element c is a Coxeter element if and only if there exists a simple system S of reflections such that c is the product of the generators in S. We moreover deduce multiple further implications of this property. In particular, we obtain that all noncrossing partition lattices of W associated to different Coxeter elements are isomorphic. We also prove that there is a simply transitive action of the Galois group of the field of definition of W on the set of conjugacy classes of Coxeter elements. Finally, we extend several of these properties to Springer’s regular elements of arbitrary order.

Abstract:We lay the foundations of the first-order model theory of Coxeter groups. Firstly, with the exception of the 2-spherical non-affine case (which we leave open), we characterize the superstable Coxeter groups of finite rank, which we show to be essentially the Coxeter groups of affine type. Secondly, we characterize the Coxeter groups of finite rank which are domains, a central assumption in the theory of algebraic geometry over groups, which in many respects (e.g. λ-stability) reduces the model theory of a given Coxeter system to the model theory of its associated irreducible components. In the second part of the paper we move to specific definability questions in right-angled Coxeter groups (RACGs) and 2-spherical Coxeter groups. In this respect, firstly, we prove that RACGs of finite rank do not have proper elementary subgroups which are Coxeter groups, and prove further that reflection independent ones do not have proper elementary subgroups at all. Secondly, we prove that if the monoid S i m ( W , S ) of S-self-similarities of W is finitely generated, then W is a prime model of its theory. Thirdly, we prove that in reflection independent RACGs of finite rank the Coxeter elements are type-determined. We then move to 2-spherical Coxeter groups, proving that if ( W , S ) is irreducible, 2-spherical even and not affine, then W is a prime model of its theory, and that if W Γ and W Θ are as in the previous sentence, then W Γ is elementary equivalent to W Θ if and only if Γ ≅ Θ , thus solving the elementary equivalence problem for most of the 2-spherical Coxeter groups. In the last part of the paper we focus on model theoretic applications of the notion of reflection length from Coxeter group theory, proving in particular that affine Coxeter groups are not connected.

Abstract:In this paper we study affine reflection subgroups in arbitrary infinite Coxeter groups of finite rank. In particular, we study the distribution of roots of Coxeter groups in the root subsystems associated with affine reflection subgroups. We give a characterization of limit roots arising from affine reflection subgroups. We also give a characterization of when a Coxeter group may possess affine reflection subgroups. We show that the intersection of the normalized isotropic cone (associated with the Tits representation of a Coxeter group) and the imaginary cone consists of limit roots closely related to affine reflection subgroups.

Abstract:We investigate representations of Coxeter groups into $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ as geometric reflection groups which are convex cocompact in the projective space $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. We characterize which Coxeter groups admit such representations, and we fully describe the corresponding spaces of convex cocompact representations as reflection groups, in terms of the associated Cartan matrices. The Coxeter groups that appear include all infinite, word hyperbolic Coxeter groups; for such groups the representations as reflection groups that we describe are exactly the projective Anosov ones. We also obtain a large class of nonhyperbolic Coxeter groups, thus providing many examples for the theory of nonhyperbolic convex cocompact subgroups in $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ developed in arXiv:1704.08711.

Abstract:We refine Brink’s theorem, that the non-reflection part of a reflection centralizer in a Coxeter group W is a free group. We give an explicit set of generators for the centralizer, which is finitely generated when W is. And we give a method for computing the Coxeter diagram for its reflection subgroup. In many cases, our method allows one to compute centralizers in one’s head.

Abstract:A Coxeter group W is called reflection independent if its reflections are uniquely determined by W only, independently on the choice of the generating set. We give a new sufficient condition for the reflection independence, and examine this condition for Coxeter groups in certain classes, possibly of infinite ranks. We also determine the finite irreducible components of another Coxeter group, that is a subgroup of W generated by the reflections centralizing a given generator of W. Determining such a subgroup makes our criterion efficient.

Abstract:We represent a Coxeter group as a subgroup of diffeomorphisms of a smooth manifold. These so-called Coxeter transformation groups fix a union of codimension-1 (reflecting) submanifolds and permute the connected components of the complement. Their action naturally extends to the tangent bundle of the ambient manifold and fixes the union of tangent bundles of these reflecting submanifolds. Fundamental group of the tangent bundle complement and that of its quotient serve as the analogue of pure Artin group and Artin group respectively. The main aim of this paper is to prove Salvetti’s theorems in this context. We show that the combinatorial data of the Coxeter transformation group can be used to construct a cell complex which is equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the tangent bundle complement.

Abstract:We use geometry of Davis complex of a Coxeter group to prove the following result: if G is an infinite indecomposable Coxeter group and $H\subset G$ is a finite index reflection subgroup then the rank of H is not less than the rank of G. This generalizes results of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0305093" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0305093">math/0305093</a>. We also describe some properties of the nerves of the group and the subgroup in the case of equal ranks.

Abstract:The reflections in a Coxeter group are defined as conjugates of a single generator, and thus admit palindromic expressions as products of generators. Our main result gives closed formulas providing a palindromic reduced expression for each reflection in any finite Weyl group. There exist algorithmic methods for determining such reduced expressions, but explicit formulas have not been recorded outside of well-known special cases.

Abstract:We study and classify a class of representations (called generalized geometric representations) of a Coxeter group of finite rank. These representations can be viewed as a natural generalization of the geometric representation. The classification is achieved by using characters of the integral homology group of certain graphs closely related to the Coxeter graph. On this basis, we also provide an explicit description of those representations on which the defining generators of the Coxeter group act by reflections.

Abstract:Assuming standard conjectures, we show that the canonical symmetrizing trace evaluated at powers of a Coxeter element produces rational Catalan numbers for irreducible spetsial complex reflection groups. This extends a technique used by Galashin, Lam, Trinh, and Williams to uniformly prove the enumeration of their noncrossing Catalan objects for finite Coxeter groups.

Abstract:We study the Hurwitz action of the classical braid group on factorisations of a Coxeter element c in a well-generated complex reflection group W. It is well-known that the Hurwitz action is transitive on the set of reduced decompositions of c in reflections. Our main result is a similar property for the primitive factorisations of c, i.e. factorisations with only one factor which is not a reflection. The motivation is the search for a geometric proof of Chapoton's formula for the number of chains of given length in the non-crossing partitions lattice NCP_W. Our proof uses the properties of the Lyashko-Looijenga covering and the geometry of the discriminant of W.

Abstract:Reflection groups, geometry of the discriminant and noncrossing partitions. When W is a well-generated complex reflection group, the noncrossing partition lattice NCP_W of type W is a very rich combinatorial object, extending the notion of noncrossing partitions of an n-gon. This structure appears in several algebraic setups (dual braid monoid, cluster algebras...). Many combinatorial properties of NCP_W are proved case-by-case, using the classification of reflection groups. It is the case for Chapoton's formula, expressing the number of multichains of a given length in the lattice NCP_W, in terms of the invariant degrees of W. This thesis work is motivated by the search for a geometric explanation of this formula, which could lead to a uniform understanding of the connections between the combinatorics of NCP_W and the invariant theory of W. The starting point is to use the Lyashko-Looijenga covering (LL), based on the geometry of the discriminant of W. In the first chapter, some topological constructions of Bessis are refined, allowing to relate the fibers of LL with block factorisations of a Coxeter element. Then we prove a transitivity property for the Hurwitz action of the braid group B_n on certain factorisations. Chapter 2 is devoted to certain finite polynomial extensions, and to properties about their Jacobians and discriminants. In Chapter 3, these results are applied to the extension defined by the covering LL. We deduce --- with a case-free proof --- formulas for the number of submaximal factorisations of a Coxeter element in W, in terms of the homogeneous degrees of the irreducible components of the discriminant and Jacobian for LL.

Abstract:For well-generated complex reflection groups, Chapuy and Stump gave a simple product for a generating function counting reflection factorizations of a Coxeter element by their length. This is refined here to record the number of reflections used from each orbit of hyperplanes. The proof is case-by-case via the classification of well-generated groups. It implies a new expression for the Coxeter number, expressed via data coming from a hyperplane orbit; a case-free proof of this due to J. Michel is included.

Abstract:Let $W$ be a group endowed with a finite set $S$ of generators. A representation $(V,\rho)$ of $W$ is called a reflection representation of $(W,S)$ if $\rho(s)$ is a (generalized) reflection on $V$ for each generator $s \in S$. In this paper, we prove that for any irreducible reflection representation $V$, all the exterior powers $\bigwedge ^d V$, $d = 0, 1, \dots, \dim V$, are irreducible $W$-modules, and they are non-isomorphic to each other. This extends a theorem of R. Steinberg which is stated for Euclidean reflection groups. Moreover, we prove that the exterior powers (except for the 0th and the highest power) of two non-isomorphic reflection representations always give non-isomorphic $W$-modules. This allows us to construct numerous pairwise non-isomorphic irreducible representations for such groups, especially for Coxeter groups.
