Abstract:Currently, the climatic implications associated with the Cenozoic tectonic history and growth mechanisms of the Tibetan Plateau lack consensus and remain controversial. This is due in part to chronological uncertainties and few paleoelevation records distributed in the central to northern Tibetan Plateau, which we address here with the development of a robust chronology (using magnetostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, detrital zircons, and regional radiochronologic dating) and a paleoelevation reconstruction for the Tuotuohe Basin (central-northern Tibet). We refined the age of the Tuotuohe Formation (37−33 Ma), Yaxicuo Formation (33−23.6 Ma), and Wudaoliang Formation (23.6−19.7 Ma). We estimated early Oligocene (ca. 29 Ma) paleotemperatures of the Tuotuohe Basin from 11 °C to 16.1 °C, which correspond to paleoelevations of 2.9 km (±0.4 km) when the relative humidity is 64% and 2.5 km (±0.5 km) when this value is 75%, using various methods including ostracod assemblages, gastropods, charophytes, branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether analysis, regional empirical formulas, and climate model simulation. Paleoelevation data and existing geological evidence in the vicinity indicate that late Eocene to late Oligocene uplift was associated with upper-crustal shortening. Since the middle Miocene, uplift has been associated with convective removal of lithospheric mantle and/or lower-crustal flow beneath the Hoh Xil Basin.

Abstract:Constraining the initial age of the Northern Qaidam Thrust Belt is critical for studying the growth of the Tibetan Plateau. This study presented insights from field observations and seismic profiles, to constrain the structural pattern and the initial age of the eastern segment of the Northern Qaidam Thrust Belt during the Cenozoic. Our research suggested the Aimunike and the Oulongbuluke uplifts, as well as the Ounan Depression between them have been uplifted during the mid-Miocene, and as a result underwent widespread denudation to remove the late Eocene-early Miocene sequences over them. After that, this area was subsided and accepted the deposition of the mid-Miocene to the Pliocene strata. A second phase of thrusting occurred in the Quaternary as those faults initiated in the mid-Miocene rejuvenated. Our results together with the previous studies suggested the N-S compressional stress over the NE Tibetan Plateau strengthened substantially during the mid-Miocene, leading to a widespread plateau growth at that time.
Uplift of NW Margin of Qaidam Basin in the Late Eocene: Implications for the Initiation of Altyn Fault.

Abstract:The evolution of Altyn Fault holds a key link in understanding the formation process of Tibet Plateau. The sedimentary and tectonic study of seismic sections, strata isopach maps and sedimentary facies maps of NW Qaidam Basin reveals the initial uplifting related with Altyn Fault at the Late Eocene, which led to the formation of the growth strata at the NW margin of Qaidam Basin. While in the map view, these NWW-SEE trending uplift sintersect with Altyn Fault by an angle of 30 and induce marginal sedimentary environment such as alluvial fan etc. Based on these observations, we conclude the initial development of Altyn Fault started at the Late Eocene, which may form a ductile sinistral shear zone in the deep and as a result a left-ordered echelon folding zone on the surface for accommodating the displacement.

Abstract:Abstract The uplift history of south-eastern Tibet is crucial to understanding processes driving the tectonic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding areas. Underpinning existing palaeoaltimetric studies has been regional mapping based in large part on biostratigraphy that assumes a Neogene modernization of the highly diverse, but threatened, Asian biota. Here, with new radiometric dating and newly collected plant-fossil archives, we quantify the surface height of part of the south-eastern margin of Tibet in the latest Eocene (∼34 Ma) to be ∼3 km and rising, possibly attaining its present elevation (3.9 km) in the early Oligocene. We also find that the Eocene–Oligocene transition in south-eastern Tibet witnessed leaf-size diminution and a floral composition change from sub-tropical/warm temperate to cool temperate, likely reflective of both uplift and secular climate change, and that, by the latest Eocene, floral modernization on Tibet had already taken place, implying modernization was deeply rooted in the Palaeogene.

Abstract:The Tibetan region underwent diachronous differential rises during the Cenozoic era. Its elevation history is critical for understanding the processes of mountain building, and for evaluating its climatic effects on atmospheric circulations. However, knowledge of paleoenvironment and paleoelevation in different geological domains of the Tibetan Plateau is still limited. Here we provide chronology of lacustrine deposits of the Upper Dingqing Formation in the Lunpola Basin in Central Tibet, which yields a middle Miocene age (15–12 Ma). Both stable isotope and palynological records indicate a climatic transition at ~13.8 Ma marked by a change towards a cooler and drier climate after the Middle Miocene Climate Transition driven by global climatic cooling. Pollen and spore assemblages suggest that the vegetation was dominated by mixed coniferous–broadleaved forest with some grasslands. New palynological elevation reconstructions constrained by the co-existence approach yield a maximum paleo-elevation of 3100–3600 m (average 3350 m) of the Lunpola Basin, which was consistent with a maximum elevation of 3400 m based on floating-leaf plants. Our new data do not support previous views that the Lunpola Basin achieved its current elevation as early as the late Eocene or early Oligocene, but instead we suggest there has been a rise of up to 1200 m since 12 million years ago. Our results bring new light on both the paleoenvironmental reconstructions and the paleo-elevation estimates of the Lunpola Basin, Central Tibet.

Abstract:The Cenozoic tectonic evolution of central Tibet plays an important role in the growth of the Tibetan plateau. Paleoelevation studies show that the central Tibetan plateau hosted an east-west trending belt of basins in the Paleogene, but how they relate to the regions uplift history remains unclear. This study addresses the uplift history of the central Tibetan plateau by focusing on Lunpola basin strata deposited in the Cenozoic through detrital zircon basin provenance and zircon geochemical indicators for crustal-thickening. U-Pb dating of detrital zircon demonstrates that the Lunpola basin was mainly derived from mixed sources composed of Paleozoic–Mesozoic sedimentary rocks of the Lhasa terrane, the Cretaceous igneous rocks of the northern Lhasa terrane, and the Paleozoic–Mesozoic sedimentary rocks of southern Qiangtang terrane. The modal framework-grain composition of sandstone samples from the basin strata indicates a recycled orogen as the source. Sandstone composition analysis reveals an increase in the volcanic component with time associated with a pulse of quartz grains in the middle Eocene. We interpret such observations to indicate input from early Cretaceous clastic sediments belonging to the Duba Formation and the Baingoin Plutonic Complex, which imply passive exhumation along the hanging wall of the Gerze-Siling Co thrust. Trace element geochemistry of zircon grains demonstrates an increase in europium anomaly (Eu/Eu*), which we interpret to reflect ∼20 km crustal thickening in central Tibet from the Eocene to Oligocene, as well as an increase of >3 km surface elevation which partly was induced by the Cenozoic sedimentary accumulation. This significant uplift event may have been associated with convective removal of a thickened Tibetan lithosphere that in turn led to magmatic inflation of the Tibetan crust.

Abstract:The space–time pattern of development of high topography associated with the Tibetan Plateau remains incomplete, due in large part to sparse proxy data that allow estimates of the growth of individual mountain ranges. Here, we present the results of a stratigraphic investigation of a ~ 3100 m section of Tertiary fluvio-lacustrine strata in the Sikouzi basin, located at the northeastern most corner of the Tibetan Plateau. Results of magnetostratigraphic analysis, coupled with a newly discovered Miocene in-situ fossil assemblage, suggest that the section preserves a nearly complete record extending from initial basin formation at ~ 29 Myr until ~ 0.5 Myr. Sediment accumulation rates increase from relatively slow accumulation during the Oligocene–Miocene (~ 9 cm/kyr) to rapid accumulation in the Pliocene (~ 22 cm/kyr), apparently occurring in two sustained pulses at ~ 10.5 Ma and ~ 5 Ma, respectively. The increase in accumulation rates starting at ~ 10.5 Ma is interpreted as heralding the initial uplift of the Liupan Shan, consistent with cooling and exhumation of the range (Zheng et al., 2006). The Pliocene increase in accumulation rate is accompanied by a distinct change in lithofacies, the appearance of coarse detritus with provenance from the Madong Shan, and up section changes in bedding orientation that are interpreted as growth strata. Collectively, our data suggest that the generation of relief in the Madong Shan began at ~ 5.4 Ma. Moreover, analysis of paleomagnetic declinations from the Sikouzi section reveals a clockwise rotation of the Sikouzi basin during the time period 24–5.4 Ma, that was followed by a subsequent counterclockwise rotation (5.4–0.5 Ma). Our study suggests that activity along the Liupan Shan-Haiyuan fault system probably initiated at ~ 10.5 Ma, but that the present-day configuration of the fault system and associated ranges near the fault tip dates to Pliocene time.
Quantitatively Tracking the Elevation of the Tibetan Plateau Since the Cretaceous: Insights from Whole-Rock Sr/Y and La/Yb Ratios

Abstract:Crustal thickness, elevation, and Sr/Y and (La/Yb)(N) of magmatic rocks are strongly correlated for subduction-related and collision-related mountain belts. We quantitatively constrain the paleo-elevation of the Tibetan Plateau since the Cretaceous using empirically derived equations. The results are broadly consistent with previous estimates based on stable isotope and structural analyses, supporting a complex uplift history. Our data suggest that a protoplateau formed in central Tibet during the Late Cretaceous and was higher than the contemporaneous Gangdese arc. This protoplateau collapsed before the India-Asia collision, during the same time period that elevation in southern Tibet was increasing. During the India-Asia collision, northern and southern Tibet were uplifted first followed by renewed uplift in central Tibet, which suggests a more complicated uplift history than commonly believed. We contend that a broad paleovalley formed during the Paleogene in central Tibet and that the whole Tibetan Plateau reached present-day elevations during the Miocene. Plain Language Summary Paleo-elevation is an important factor in understanding the mountain building processes. Strong correlations are observed between crustal thickness, elevation, and Sr/Y and (La/Yb)(N) of magmatic rocks for both subduction-related and collision-related mountain belts. We established empirical equations derived from modern examples and applied them to constrain the paleo-elevation evolution of the Tibetan Plateau since the Cretaceous. Our calculated results are broadly consistent with previous estimates based on stable isotope and structural analyses and document a complex uplift history. In central Tibet, a proto-plateau with an elevation >3,000 m was formed during the Late Cretaceous and was higher than the Gangdese continental arc in the south. This protoplateau collapsed at the same time as the southern Tibet plateau (Lhasaplano) was uplifted prior to the India-Asia collision formed before the India-Asia collision. During the India-Asia collision in the Cenozoic, northern and southern Tibet were uplift first, followed by uplift of central Tibet. A paleovalley was formed in central Tibet during the Paleogene and elevations of the whole Tibetan Plateau similar to the present-day were achieved during the Miocene.
The early Eocene rise of the Gonjo Basin, SE Tibet: From low desert to high forest

Abstract:<p>Views differ on the uplift history of the SE Tibetan Plateau and causal geodynamic mechanisms, yet reliable age-constrained paleoaltimetry in this region could test growth models of the entire plateau. Here we apply carbonate clumped isotope thermometry to well-dated carbonate paleosols and marls in the Gonjo Basin, SE Tibet, to reveal the topographic evolution of the basin. The sedimentary ages of carbonates of the lower and upper Ranmugou Formation are constrained to 54-50 Ma and 44-40 Ma, respectively. The temperature derived from carbonate clumped isotope thermometry indicates the mean annual air temperature (MAAT) of the Gonjo Basin in the early Eocene was ∼24 °C, which is consistent with the warm climate indicated by palm fossils. The MAAT of the basin in the middle Eocene was ∼7 °C, 17 °C cooler than in the early Eocene. Carbonate clumped oxygen isotope thermometry-based paleoaltimetry shows the Gonjo Basin experienced a rapid uplift of 3.1 km, from ∼0.7 km in the early Eocene to ∼3.8 km in the middle Eocene. This rise explains the marked cooling. As a cause of this rapid rise, and the associated regional climate change transforming the landscape from desert to forest, we invoke crustal deformation and thickening induced by intracontinental subduction between the Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes that comprise the core of the Tibet.</p>

Abstract:The Guizhou Plateau represents a geomorphic transition between the Tibetan Plateau and the Yangtze River Plain. It likely formed in response to the propagation of surface uplift in southeastern Tibet during India-Eurasia continental collision. However, the uplift history of the region is unclear largely due to a lack of datable material. The bedrock geology is dominated by carbonate rocks, which contains numerous multi-level caves in the main river valleys that are linked to the river incision history. Cosmogenic 26Al and 10Be burial dating of sediments in caves and river terraces from the northwestern and southern plateau reveals the fluvial chronology and provides the first direct determination of long-term river incision rates. The caves and terraces on the Liuchong River in NW Guizhou yield burial ages of between 0.41 ± 0.12 Ma and 2.85 ± 0.21 Ma, indicating an average incision rate of 57 ± 3 m/Ma. Four level caves at Libo in southern Guizhou yield burial ages of between 0.56 ± 0.16 Ma and 3.54 (+0.25/-0.22) Ma, indicating slightly slower incision rate (47 ± 5 m/Ma). These new results imply that the high elevation of the Guizhou Plateau had developed before the Late Pliocene, and that surface uplift during the Late Cenozoic was largely uniform across the region.

Abstract:The central Tibetan Plateau has an average altitude of ~5000 m; its exhumation and chemical weathering greatly influence the global climate and ocean chemistry. The modern central Tibet is characterized by low-relief, high elevation topography with endorheic drainage. When and how these geomorphic characteristics of central Tibet were initiated remains controversial. Here, we have applied zircon UPb dating and low-temperature thermochronology on the Cretaceous plutons from Coqin Basin of central Tibet in order to assess timings of exhumation. The thermal history modeling indicates a period of relatively rapid cooling (2.5–4 °C/Ma) occurred in Late Cretaceous to Middle Eocene times (from ~80 Ma to ~40 Ma), with the exhumation rates of 0.2–0.4 mm/yr assuming a geothermal gradient of 25 °C/km. Cooling rates then slowed to ~0.5 °C/Ma during the Middle Eocene to the present, with a relatively lower exhumation rates of ~0.02–0.03 mm/yr. Synchronous rapid cooling and exhumation has also been identified in central Tibet; this signal of widespread Late Cretaceous exhumation across the region may be viewed as evidence for the initial surface uplift and erosion of the central Tibetan plateau. Lower exhumation rate since ~40 Ma, combined with sedimentological data suggests that the low-relief, internally drained topography of central Tibet was initiated around this time.

Early Eocene Rapid Exhumation Record in the Region of Nima, Central Tibet, As Determined by Low-Temperature Thermochronology

Abstract:Knowledge of the geological history of the Tibetan plateau is critical to understanding crustal deformation process, and the plateau’s influence on climate. However, the timing of Tibetan plateau development remains controversial. The Nima Basin along the Jurassic-Cretaceous Bangong Suture in central Tibet provides well-dated records of exhumation in this area. Here, we present detrital zircon U-Pb, apatite U-Th/He (AHe) and apatite fission track data (AFT) from upper Cretaceous and Oligocene red sandstones and conglomerates in the Nima Basin, as well as from the Xiabie granite in the hanging wall of the basin-bounding Muggar Thrust. 4 granite conglomerate clasts from the above yield zircon U-Pb ages ranging between 114-122 Ma, which likely come from the Xiabie granite. 7 granitoid/sandstone conglomerate clasts yield AHe ages ranging from 21-58 Ma, while AFT ages range from 34-83 Ma. Thermal history inversion modelling for five of the above samples show a consistent rapid cooling from 100 ℃ to 30 ℃ between 50-40 Ma, the cooling rate decreased significantly after 40 Ma. Abstract:The elevation of embryonic Xizang Plateau is reconstructed by the research on planation surfaces to be 500-1500 m a.s.l. The formation age of main surface of 19-7 Ma is determined by 20 fission track data of recrystalline calcite. The modern Xizang Plateau, which has undergone three uplifts and two planations since the collision of India and Asia, rose abruptly in 5 Ma B. P. The plateau rose to "the first critical elevation" of 1500 m in Early Pleistocene. An intense tectonic movement in 0.7 Ma B. P., namely "Kunya Movement", made the plateau get "the second critical elevation" of 3000 m.

Abstract:The Eocene palaeogeomorphology and uplift process of the Central Tibetan Plateau including the Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes have been controversial. In this paper, we study Eocene rhyolites in Wuma area of the Northern Lhasa terrane on the Central Tibetan Plateau by zircon U-Pb dating, geochemistry, zircon Lu-Hf isotopes, and Sr-Nd isotopes. The results show that the ages of Wuma rhyolites are 40-39 Ma, and the petrogenesis of them is related to partial melting of lower crust. The La/Yb, Dy/Yb, Sm/Yb and zircon Eu/Eu* of lower-crust-derived intermediate-felsic magmatic rocks can well reflect crustal thickness and Moho depth. Based on statistics of intermediate-felsic magmatic rocks in the Central Tibetan Plateau at 47–37 Ma, we find that lower-crust-derived intermediate-felsic magmatic rocks of the Northern Lhasa terrane have lower La/Yb, Dy/Yb, Sm/Yb and zircon Eu/Eu* than those of the Southern-Central Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes, indicating that Northern Lhasa terrane had thinner crust than Southern-Central Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes during late Eocene. Further, according to Airy isostatic compensation, in which thick crusts correspond to high altitudes and thin crusts correspond to low altitudes, we speculate that the Northern Lhasa terrane had lower altitude, while the Southern-Central Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes had higher altitude during late Eocene; that is, the Central Tibetan Plateau had the late Eocene palaeogeomorphology of two mountains and one basin. In addition, through statistics of intermediate-felsic magmatic rocks in the Northern Lhasa terrane and near its suture zones on both sides since 100 Ma, we find that La/Yb, Dy/Yb and Sm/Yb of these intermediate-felsic magmatic rocks increase at 40-34 Ma, indicating that the crust of the Northern Lhasa terrane have thickened and the surface may have been uplifted during late Eocene. Based on that there are abundant late Eocene lower-crust-derived intermediate-felsic magmatic rocks in the Central Tibetan Plateau and the late Eocene palaeogeomorphology of Central Tibetan Plateau is two mountains and one basin, and other evidences, we speculate that the late Eocene uplift of Northern Lhasa terrane may have been related to lower crustal channel flow.

Abstract:The modern high topography of the eastern Tibetan Plateau is drained by several of the largest rivers on Earth, and exerts a prominent influence on the Asian monsoon pattern. However, when the high terrain was formed remains highly debated. Here, we present detrital zircon U‐Pb ages that indicate a south‐flowing drainage system with distal headwaters passed through the Ninglang Basin at ca. 45 Ma. We advocate for early–middle Eocene surface uplift in the Gonjo Basin and areas to the west creating a southeast tilted topography across eastern Tibet. The termination of sedimentation at ca. 40 Ma implies that the river system had deviated from the Ninglang Basin, which we interpret as a result of rise of the Yalong‐Yulong thrust belt. Combined with other lines of evidence from previous studies, we support the establishment of moderate‐high elevation topography of eastern Tibet by late Eocene time.

Abstract:Significance The ancient topography of the Tibetan Plateau and its role in biotic evolution are still poorly understood, mostly due to a lack of fossil evidence. Our discovery of ∼47-Mya plant fossils from a present elevation of 4,850 m in central Tibet, diminishes, significantly, that lack of knowledge. The fossils represent a humid subtropical vegetation and some of the 70 different plant forms show affinity to Early-Middle Eocene floras in both North America and Europe. Using leaf architecture, we calculate that the forest grew at ∼1,500-m elevation within an east–west trending valley under a monsoonal climate. Our findings highlight the complexity of Tibet’s ancient landscape and emphasize the importance of Tibet in the history of global biodiversity.

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau was formed by long-term terrane accretion and block collision, controlled by complicated Mesozoic-Cenozoic geodynamic mechanisms. However, its detail Cretaceous evolution history remains controversial. This study compiles available low-temperature thermochronology results and adakitic rocks data from the Qiangtang and Lhasa terranes to investigate its evolution. Two collected datasets synthetically demonstrate a deep-surface coupling relationship with rapid exhumation and crustal thickening during ~120–80 Ma over the Qiangtang and Lhasa terranes. These terranes amalgamated before 120 Ma, resulting in rapid uplift and crustal thickening of southern Qiangtang during 120–80 Ma. Meanwhile, other sub-terranes outside of the southern Qiangtang terrane, including northern Qiangtang, northern Lhasa, and central Lhasa, also underwent stepwise surface uplift due to intense folding and thrusting. Instead of continuous crustal thickening, the northern and central Lhasa sub-terranes experienced intense erosion and delamination of early thickened crust during ~90–80 Ma. Furthermore, the southern Lhasa sub-terrane rapidly uplifted during 70–60 Ma due to the Neo-Tethyan subduction. Eventually, the Cretaceous high geomorphic configuration across the Qiangtang and Lhasa terranes was shaped by terrane collision, lower crustal delamination, and Neo-Tethyan subduction prior to the India-Asia continental collision.

Abstract:Quantifying the interactions between topography, climate and plant diversity within one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, remains elusive due to few reliable quantitative paleoelevation reconstructions, precise geological age constraints and well-preserved plant fossils. The Lühe Basin, on the southeastern margin of Tibetan Plateau has yielded abundant plant fossils with a U-Pb age of 33–32 Ma, providing an opportunity to estimate the elevation of this region and plant diversity at that time. Fossil leaf physiognomy was used to reconstruct the paleoclimate and the paleoelevation of the basin was derived from moist enthalpy. The results show that the Lühe Basin, had attained it's present elevation (1.7 ± 0.9 km) by the early Oligocene and, compared to now, experienced a humid subtropical climate with a wetter dry season and lower precipitation seasonality in an overall wetter precipitation regime (1748.5 ± 606 mm). This was accompanied by a greater seasonal range in temperature, although the mean annual temperature (14.9 ± 2.3 °C) was similar to that of today (15.6 °C). Combined with previous studies, we conclude that the appearance of the modern flora across the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau had started by the early Oligocene, corresponding with the establishment of modern topography at that time.

Abstract:The uplift history of the Tibetan Plateau is a hot topic for the geological study. The Lhasa terrane, situated on the southern edge of Eurasian plate, records the tectonic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau preceding the collision between the Indian and Eurasian continental plates. This paper employs low-temperature thermochronological methods, including zircon and apatite (U-Th)/He dating, as well as apatite fission track (AFT) analysis, to investigate the Bange pluton in the northern Lhasa terrane. The research results indicate that the zircon and apatite helium (ZHe and AHe) ages from the plutons range from 90 to 78 Ma and 83 to 63 Ma, respectively, while the AFT ages span from 65 to 46 Ma. Thermal history reveals that the Bange pluton experienced a rapid cooling phase during the Late Cretaceous (from ~94 to 70 Ma), with a cooling rate of ~4.2 °C/Ma, subsequently followed by a slow cooling rate with ~1.1 °C/Ma. These results suggest that the Bange pluton has underwent rapid uplift during the Late Cretaceous to Paleocene. This Late Cretaceous rapid cooling event is also observed in other regions of the Lhasa terrane, indicating a widespread period of rapid cooling and exhumation. Since the Cenozoic, the cooling rate of the Bange pluton has significantly decreased, which would suggest that the tectonic uplift of the central Tibetan Plateau may not be related to the India-Asia continental collision. Considering the regional tectonic context, the collision between the Lhasa terrane and the Qiangtang terrane during the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous may have initiated the exhumation of the Lhasa terrane in the Late Cretaceous.

Abstract:The uplift processes of the Qilian Shan (northern Tibetan Plateau) play a central role in our understanding of the dynamics of outward and upward growth of Tibet due to sustained convergence of the Indian and Asian plates. We employ apatite fission track chronology and geological mapping to reveal the time and pattern of the deformation along the Qilian Shan. Our results indicate that the emergence of the Tuolai Shan in the central Qilian Shan occurred at 17–14 Ma, that northern Qilian Shan thrusting began at 10–8 Ma, and that the Laojunmiao anticline formed ca. 3.6 Ma. Together with previous results that show that uplift of the southern Qilian Shan began in the Oligocene, we suggest that the Qilian Shan has undergone progressively northward expansion in the Cenozoic due to significant crustal shortening driven by Qilian Shan thrust fault systems.
