Abstract:In this paper, we find necessary and sufficient conditions so that copula-based conditional distributions of a response variable with respect to covariates, are ordered with respect to the simple stochastic order introduced by Lehmann. These conditions do not depend on the marginal distributions of the random variables. As a result, we have conditions to ensure that the conditional mean and conditional quantiles are monotonic with respect to the covariates.

Abstract:Ordering properties on order statistics from heterogeneous observations have been paid lots of attention. This article devotes to investigating the ordering properties on order statistics from statistically dependent observations. We build the likelihood ratio order and the (reversed) hazard rate order of the extremal values and their adjacent order statistics. Also, some applications of our comparison results in TTE model and its dual version, auction theory and k-out-of-n reliability systems are presented.

Abstract:The conditional copula model arises when the dependence between random variables is influenced by another covariate. Despite its importance in modelling complex dependence structures, there are very few fully nonparametric approaches to estimate the conditional copula function. In the bivariate setting, the only nonparametric estimator for the conditional copula is based on Sklar's Theorem and proposed by Gijbels \textit{et al.} (2011). In this paper, we propose an alternative nonparametric approach %based on functional principal component analysis. We to construct an estimator for the bivariate conditional copula from the Karhunen-Loève representation of a suitably defined conditional copula process. We establish its consistency and weak convergence to a limit Gaussian process with explicit covariance function.

Dependence properties of bivariate copula families

Abstract:Motivated by recently investigated results on dependence measures and robust risk models, this paper provides an overview of dependence properties of many well-known bivariate copula families, where the focus is on the Schur order for conditional distributions, which has the fundamental property that minimal elements characterize independence and maximal elements characterize perfect directed dependence. We give conditions on copulas that imply the Schur ordering of the associated conditional distribution functions. For extreme-value copulas, we prove the equivalence of the lower orthant order, the Schur order for conditional distributions, and the pointwise order of the associated Pickands dependence functions. Further, we provide several tables and figures that list and illustrate various positive dependence and monotonicity properties of copula families, in particular, from classes of Archimedean, extreme-value, and elliptical copulas. Finally, for Chatterjee's rank correlation, which is consistent with the Schur order for conditional distributions, we give some new closed-form formulas in terms of the parameter of the underlying copula family.

Abstract:In this paper we consider finite conditional random quantities and conditional previsions assessments in the setting of coherence. We use a suitable representation for conditional random quantities; in particular the indicator of a conditional event $E|H$ is looked at as a three-valued quantity with values 1, or 0, or $p$, where $p$ is the probability of $E|H$. We introduce a notion of iterated conditional random quantity of the form $(X|H)|K$ defined as a suitable conditional random quantity, which coincides with $X|HK$ when $H \subseteq K$. Based on a recent paper by S. Kaufmann, we introduce a notion of conjunction of two conditional events and then we analyze it in the setting of coherence. We give a representation of the conjoined conditional and we show that this new object is a conditional random quantity. We examine some cases of logical dependencies, by also showing that the conjunction may be a conditional event; moreover, we introduce the negation of the conjunction and by De Morgan's Law the operation of disjunction. Finally, we give the lower and upper bounds for the conjunction and the disjunction of two conditional events, by showing that the usual probabilistic properties continue to hold.

Abstract:In this study, we introduce a novel concept of a copula dependence structure termed the stochastic monotone wing property and investigate its associated properties. This concept is closely related to the monotone conditional variance property, which describes the behavior of the conditional variance of V given U=u as either an increasing or a decreasing function of u for a given random vector (U,V) with a certain distribution function. The need for such a dependence structure arises in various fields, including insurance, where a copula family with the monotone conditional variance property is needed for the joint distribution of frequency and average severity in the collective risk model. Beyond insurance, its applications extend to economics and climatology. Furthermore, this study proposes a new parametric copula family that exhibits the stochastic monotone wing property and provides a method for constructing copulas with this characteristic.

Abstract:This paper considers parallel and series systems with heterogeneous components having dependent exponential lifetimes. The underlying dependence is assumed to be Archimedean and the component lifetimes are supposed to be connected according to an Archimedean copula. Sufficient conditions are found to dominate a parallel system with heterogenous exponential components, with respect to the dispersive order, by another parallel system with homogenous exponential components where the dependence structure between lifetimes of components is the same. We also compare two series systems (and two parallel systems) with general one-parameter dependent components and with respect to the usual stochastic ordering. Examples are given to illustrate the theoretical findings.

Abstract:Our goal in this paper is to propose an alternative risk measure which takes into account the fluctuations of losses and possible correlations between random variables. This new notion of risk measures, that we call Copula Conditional Tail Expectation describes the expected amount of risk that can be experienced given that a potential bivariate risk exceeds a bivariate threshold value, and provides an important measure for right-tail risk. An application to real financial data is given.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain general representations for the joint distributions and copulas of arbitrary dependent random variables absolutely continuous with respect to the product of given one-dimensional marginal distributions. The characterizations obtained in the paper represent joint distributions of dependent random variables and their copulas as sums of $U$-statistics in independent random variables. We show that similar results also hold for expectations of arbitrary statistics in dependent random variables. As a corollary of the results, we obtain new representations for multivariate divergence measures as well as complete characterizations of important classes of dependent random variables that give, in particular, methods for constructing new copulas and modeling different dependence structures. The results obtained in the paper provide a device for reducing the analysis of convergence in distribution of a sum of a double array of dependent random variables to the study of weak convergence for a double array of their independent copies. Weak convergence in the dependent case is implied by similar asymptotic results under independence together with convergence to zero of one of a series of dependence measures including the multivariate extension of Pearson's correlation, the relative entropy or other multivariate divergence measures. A closely related result involves conditions for convergence in distribution of $m$-dimensional statistics $h(X_t,X_{t+1},...,X_{t+m-1})$ of time series $\{X_t\}$ in terms of weak convergence of $h(\xi_t,\xi_{t+1},...,\xi_{t+m-1})$, where $\{\xi_t\}$ is a sequence of independent copies of $X_t'$s, and convergence to zero of measures of intertemporal dependence in $\{X_t\}$. The tools used include new sharp estimates for the distance between the distribution function of an arbitrary statistic in dependent random variables and the distribution function of the statistic in independent copies of the random variables in terms of the measures of dependence of the random variables. Furthermore, we obtain new sharp complete decoupling moment and probability inequalities for dependent random variables in terms of their dependence characteristics.

We then establish different inequalities between two extremes, namely, and and and , in terms of the usual stochastic, star, Lorenz, hazard rate, reversed hazard rate and dispersive orders. Several examples and counterexamples are presented for illustrating all the results established here. Statistical Testing for Conditional Copulas

Abstract:In conditional copula models, the copula parameter is deterministically linked to a covariate via the calibration function. The latter is of central interest for inference and is usually estimated nonparametrically. However, when a parametric model for the calibration function is appropriate, the resulting estimator exhibits significant gains in statistical efficiency and requires smaller computational costs. We develop methodology for testing a parametric formulation of the calibration function against a general alternative and propose a generalized likelihood ratio-type test that enables conditional copula model diagnostics. We derive the asymptotic null distribution of the proposed test and study its finite sample performance using simulations. The method is applied to two data examples.
The empirical copula process in high dimensions: Stute's representation and applications

Abstract:The empirical copula process, a fundamental tool for copula inference, is studied in the high dimensional regime where the dimension is allowed to grow to infinity exponentially in the sample size. Under natural, weak smoothness assumptions on the underlying copula, it is shown that Stute's representation is valid in the following sense: all low-dimensional margins of fixed dimension of the empirical copula process can be approximated by a functional of the low-dimensional margins of the standard empirical process, with the almost sure error term being uniform in the margins. The result has numerous potential applications, and is exemplary applied to the problem of testing pairwise stochastic independence in high dimensions, leading to various extensions of recent results in the literature: for certain test statistics based on pairwise association measures, type-I error control is obtained for models beyond mutual independence. Moreover, bootstrap-based critical values are shown to yield strong control of the familywise error rate for a large class of data generating processes.

Tree-based conditional copula estimation

Abstract:This paper proposes a regression tree procedure to estimate conditional copulas. The associated algorithm determines classes of observations based on covariate values and fits a simple parametric copula model on each class. The association parameter changes from one class to another, allowing for non-linearity in the dependence structure modeling. It also allows the definition of classes of observations on which the so-called "simplifying assumption" [see Derumigny and Fermanian, 2017] holds reasonably well. When considering observations belonging to a given class separately, the association parameter no longer depends on the covariates according to our model. In this paper, we derive asymptotic consistency results for the regression tree procedure and show that the proposed pruning methodology, that is the model selection techniques selecting the appropriate number of classes, is optimal in some sense. Simulations provide finite sample results and an analysis of data of cases of human influenza presents the practical behavior of the procedure.

The checkerboard copula and dependence concepts

Abstract:We study the problem of choosing the copula when the marginal distributions of a random vector are not all continuous. Inspired by four motivating examples including simulation from copulas, stress scenarios, co-risk measures, and dependence measures, we propose to use the checkerboard copula, that is, intuitively, the unique copula with a distribution that is as uniform as possible within regions of flexibility. We show that the checkerboard copula has the largest Shannon entropy, which means that it carries the least information among all possible copulas for a given random vector. Furthermore, the checkerboard copula preserves the dependence information of the original random vector, leading to two applications in the context of diversification penalty and impact portfolios. The numerical and empirical results illustrate the benefits of using the checkerboard copula in the calculation of co-risk measures.

Abstract:An extension of Archimax copula class in more than two random variables ( Multivariate ) was introduced in (Jágr 2011) for describing dependency structures among random variables in higher dimension, and some properties of Archimax copula were explored in (Charpentier et al. 2014). In this article, some results for stochastic ordering of extreme order statistics in (Li and Fang 2015) are generalized and proved in Archimax copula. Stochastic ordering of sample extremes for PHR models is generalized and proved in Archimax copula. Examples with graphical illustrations are also presented.

Abstract:Copulas are statistical tools for modelling the multivariate dependence structure among variables in a distribution free way. This paper investigates bivariate copula structure; the existence and uniqueness of a bivariate copula decomposition into a comonotonic, an independent, a countermonotonic, and an indecomposable part are proved, while the coefficients are determined from partial derivatives of the corresponding copula. Moreover, for the indecomposable part, an optimal convex approximation is provided and analyzed on the basis of the usual criterion. Some applications of the decomposition in finance and insurance are mentioned.

Abstract:The study of dependence between random variables is a mainstay in statistics. In many cases, the strength of dependence between two or more random variables varies according to the values of a measured covariate. We propose inference for this type of variation using a conditional copula model where the copula function belongs to a parametric copula family and the copula parameter varies with the covariate. In order to estimate the functional relationship between the copula parameter and the covariate, we propose a nonparametric approach based on local likelihood. Of importance is also the choice of the copula family that best represents a given set of data. The proposed framework naturally leads to a novel copula selection method based on cross-validated prediction errors. We derive the asymptotic bias and variance of the resulting local polynomial estimator, and outline how to construct pointwise confidence intervals. The finite-sample performance of our method is investigated using simulation studies and is illustrated using a subset of the Matched Multiple Birth data.

Abstract:This paper considers comparing properties and characterizations of the bivariate functions under Archimedean copula. It is shown that some results of the usual stochastic order for the bivariate functions in the independent case are generalized to the Archimedean copula-linked dependent case, and we also derive some characterizations of different bivariate functions composed by Archimedean copula-linked dependent random variables. These results generalize some existing results in the literature and bring conclusions closer to reality. Two applications in scheduling problems are also provided to illustrate the main results.

Abstract:Copulas characterize the dependence among components of random vectors. Unlike marginal and joint distributions, which are directly observable, the copula of a random vector is a hidden dependence structure that links the joint distribution with its margins. Choosing a parametric copula model is thus a nontrivial task but it can be facilitated by relying on a nonparametric estimator. Here the authors propose a kernel estimator of the copula that is mean square consistent everywhere on the support. They determine the bias and variance of this estimator. They also study the effects of kernel smoothing on copula estimation. They then propose a smoothing bandwidth selection rule based on the derived bias and variance. After confirming their theoretical findings through simulations, they use their kernel estimator to formulate a goodness‐of‐fit test for parametric copula models.
