Abstract:Colorimetric mechanophores, which change color through force-induced covalent bond breakage, have been incorporated into polymer chains to create mechanochromic materials. However, the color change of most mechanophores is a turn-on response. In this work, we designed and synthesized a novel mechanoluminescent polymer system, PBA-SP-P(MMA-co-NBD), based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) with spiropyran (SP) as a force-activated "on/off mechanophore acceptor and nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) as a fluorescent donor. It is a comb polymer having NBD-bearing poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) side chains grafted onto a poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) backbone through SP groups. The processed polymer yields a morphology having NBD-containing PMMA nanodomains embedded into a PBA matrix with SP at the interface. The distance between NBD and SP functionalities is less than 10 nm with confinement of the nanophase separation, which effectively facilitates their fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Under uniaxial stretch, the materials change color at strains as low as about 18% and undergo a green-to-red fluorescence color switch. The two colors are ratiometric, exhibiting a linear correlation with strain after the onset of mechanoactivation. The color change is greatly enhanced right after failure. The fluorescence emission performance can be well controlled through regulating the PMMA/PBA and SP/NBD ratios in the synthesis. The synthesized polymer system exhibits a good potential as an indicator in monitoring microscale cut damages.
Carbon Dot Crosslinking Towards Mechanochemically and Photochemically Induced Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer

Abstract:Mechanochromism in polymers has attracted great interests in recent years. Herein, we develop a mechanochromic elastomer carrying spiropyran mechanophores in the chain and mechanoresponsiveness of elastomer is enhanced by embedding luminescent carbon dot (CD) nanoparticles as crosslinkers and energy donor in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Compared with the control with physically blended CD, CD crosslinked elastomer exhibit excellent daylight and fluorescent colors change under stretching. The mechanochemically induced fluorescence change is a result of FRET between CD nanoparticles and the activated merocyanine. The control with physically blended CD nanoparticles shows low FRET in stretching due to lower fraction of spiropyran activation as a result of lower mechanical properties. Furthermore, the CD crosslinked elastomer has already been applied in rewritable mechanochemical and photochemical recording or printing. Our demonstration shows that interfacial chemical bonding plays a critical role in the reinforcement of mechanical properties for polymer composites and may exhibit great potential in the study of the acceleration of mechanoresponsiveness of polymer and multi-responsiveness of polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract:Photo- and mechanoluminescent materials that exhibit tunable emission properties when subjected to external stimuli have a wide variety of applications. However, most mechanoresponsive materials have a mechano-induced structural transition from crystalline to amorphous phase, and there are only few reports on the crystalline to crystalline transformation. This study reports an amide-linked dyad P1 containing spiropyran and naphthalimide chromophores with dual sensitivity of photochromism and mechanochromism. Under light and mechanical stimuli, P1 performs different color transition. With mechanical force, the morphologies of P1 change from microfiber to nanosphere and the amide group in P1 plays a vital role in these transition processes. Mechanical force can induce the morphology change of P1 through enhancing pi-pi stacking and destroying hydrogen bonds. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the design strategy for new mechanoresponsive switching materials: both pi-pi stacking and hydrogen bonding of the dyad contribute the mechano-induced crystalline/crystalline transformation.
A Rhodamine-Spiropyran Conjugate Empowering Tunable Mechanochromism in Polymers under Multiple Stimuli

Abstract:Mechanochromic functionality realized via the force-responsive mechanophores in polymers has great potential for damage sensing and information storage. Mechanophores with the ability to recognize multiple stimuli for tunable chromic characteristics are highly sought after for versatile sensing ability and color programmability. Nevertheless, the majority of mechanophores are based on single-component chromophores with limited sensitivity, or require additional fabrication technology for multi-modal chromism. Here, we report a novel multifunctional mechanophore capable of vividly detectable and tunable mechanochromism in polymers. This synergistic optical coupling relies on strategically fusing rhodamine and spiropyran (Rh-SP), and tethering polymer chains on both subunits. The mechanochromic behaviors of the Rh-SP-linked polymers under sonication and compression are thoroughly evaluated in response to changes in force and the light-controlled relaxation process. Non-sequential ring-opening of the two subunits under force is identified, endowing high-contrast mechanochromism. Light-induced differential ring-closing reactions of the two subunits, together with the acidichromism of the SP moiety, are employed to engineer elastomers with programmable and wide-spectrum colors. Our work presents an effective strategy for highly appreciable and regulable mechanochromic functionality, and also provides new insights into the rupture mechanisms of π-fused mechanophores, as well as how the stimuli history controls stress accumulation in polymers.
A Mechanochemical Reaction Cascade for Controlling Load‐Strengthening of a Mechanochromic Polymer

Abstract:AbstractWe demonstrate an intermolecular reaction cascade to control the force which triggers crosslinking of a mechanochromic polymer of spirothiopyran (STP). Mechanochromism arises from rapid reversible force‐sensitive isomerization of STP to a merocyanine, which reacts rapidly with activated C=C bonds. The concentration of such bonds, and hence the crosslinking rate, is controlled by force‐dependent dissociation of a Diels–Alder adduct of anthracene and maleimide. Because the adduct requires ca. 1 nN higher force to dissociate at the same rate as that of STP isomerization, the cascade limits crosslinking to overstressed regions of the material, which are at the highest rate of material damage. Using comb polymers decreased the minimum concentration of mechanophores required to crosslinking by about 100‐fold compared to previous examples of load‐strengthening materials. The approach described has potential for controlling a broad range of reaction sequences triggered by mechanical load.

Abstract:We describe the enhanced mechanophore activation within nanosized core–shell micelles, which also present temperature and ultraviolet (UV) light-responsive properties. The model micelle was fabricated by the self-assembly of an amphiphilic block copolymer of poly(tert-butyl acrylate-b-N-isopropylacrylamide) with one spiropyran (SP) moiety at the midpoint of chain [SP-(t-BA88-b-NIPAM62)2, P2]. Micellization of P2 in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water mixed solvent enhanced the reactivity of the electrocyclic ring-opening reaction of SP to merocyanine (MC) isomer under sonication because micellization caused SP-centered PtBA block entangled and partially swelled in the micellar core and the increase of the dielectric constant of the medium around the SP, which could facilitate the conversion of SP to MC. This new enhanced mechanophore activation model demonstrated here is valuable as a probe to detect stress activation within nanosized particles and to design multiple-responsive materials.
Versatile Mechanochemical Reactions via Tailored Force Transmission in Mechanophores

Abstract:In polymer mechanochemistry, regulating the intrinsic mechanical reactivity of a mechanophore offers extensive opportunities in material science, enabling the development of hierarchical and multifunctional polymer-based materials. Recent advances have focused on innovating various types of mechanophores with inherent reactivity (e.g. regioselectivity and stereoselectivity). However, little attention has been given to modulating their reactivity by tailoring force transmission within mechanophores. Here, we introduce a novel approach through the implementation of a cyclic pulling geometry into an anthracene-maleimide (AM) mechanophore. This approach manipulates force transmission within the mechanophore and effectively regulates its reactivity from 0.0160 min-1 to 0.00133 min-1, achieving up to a 12-fold change. Mechanochemical coupling analysis suggests that the split force transmission within the ring may suppress the sequential bond rupture mechanism in AM mechanophores under applied forces. By leveraging the distinct force transmission pathways within cyclic and linear AM mechanophores, we covalently integrate them with a spiropyran mechanophore to design tandem mechanophore systems for hierarchical mechanochemical activation. These findings highlight the efficacy and versatility of the cyclic pulling strategy in modulating mechanophore reactivity, providing valuable insights for the design of tunable multifunctional polymer-based materials.

Abstract:Optical force probes that can release force-dependent and visualized signals with minimal changes in the polymer main chains under mechanical load are highly sought after but currently limited. In this study, we introduce a flex-activated mechanophore (FA) based on the Diels-Alder adduct of anthracene and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylatea that exhibits turn-on mechanofluorescence. We demonstrate that when FA is incorporated into polymer networks or in its crystalline state, it can release fluorescent anthracenes through a retro-Diels-Alder mechanochemical reaction under compression or hydrostatic high pressure, respectively. The flex-activated mechanism of FA is successfully confirmed. Furthermore, we systematically modulate the force delivered to the mechanophore by varying the crosslinking density of the networks and the applied macroscopic pressures. This modulation leads to incremental increases in mechanophore activation, successive release of anthracenes, and quantitative enhancement of fluorescence intensity. The exceptional potential of FA as a sensitive force probe in different bulk states is highlighted, benefiting from its unique flex-activated mode with highly emissive fluorophore releasing. Overall, this report enriches our understanding of the structures and functions of flex-activated mechanophores and polymeric materials.

Abstract:A mechanochromic liquid crystalline elastomer is presented with force‐induced synergetic pigmentary and structural color change, whose mechanosensitivity is enhanced by the stress‐concentration induced by the doped nanoparticle. The materials have a large color‐changing gamut and high mechanochromic sensitivity, which exhibit great potential in the field of mechanical detectors, sensors, and anti‐counterfeiting materials. The ability of some animals to rapidly change their colors can greatly improve their chances of escaping predators or hunting prey. A classic example is cephalopods, which can rapidly shift through a wide range of colors. This ability is based on the synergetic effect of the change of pigmentary and structural colors exhibited by their own two categories of color‐changing cells: supernatant chromatophores offer various pigmentary colors and lower iridophores or leucophores reflect the different structural colors by adjusting their periodicities. Here, a mechanochromic liquid crystalline elastomer with force‐induced synergetic pigmentary and structural color change, whose mechanosensitivity is enhanced by the stress‐concentration induced by the doped nanoparticle, is presented. Abstract:Mechanochromic materials has received broad research interests recently, owing to its ability to monitor the in‐situ stress/strain in polymer materials in a straight forward way. However, one major setback that hinder the practical application of these materials is their low sensitivity toward tensile strain. Here we show a new strategy for pre‐stretching of the mechanochromic agent in a polymer film on the molecular scale, which can effectively enhance the mechanochromic sensitivity of a polymer film toward tensile strain. In‐situ fluorescent measurement during tensile test showed an early activation of the mechanochromic agent at tensile strain as low as 50%. The pre‐stretching effect is realized by firstly inducing ring‐opening of the mechanochromic agent by molecular functionalization, and then compelling the ring‐closure process in the cured film by elevated temperature. This post‐curing ring‐closure process will result in pre‐stretched mechanochromic agent in a crosslinked network. The mechanism for mechanochromic activation of polymer films with different composition was elaborated by visco‐elastic measurements, and the effect of pre‐stretching was further confirmed by polymer films with other compositions. Combined with the simplicity of the method developed, we believe this work will offer an alternative strategy to enhance the sensitivity of different mechanochromic agents toward tensile strain. Multiple Force‐Triggered Downconverted and Upconverted Emission in Polymers Containing Diels‐Alder Adducts

Abstract:Fluorescent mechanophores can indicate the deformation or damage in polymers. The development of mechanophores with multi‐triggered response is of great interest. Herein, Diels‐Alder (DA) adducts are incorporated into linear poly(methyl acrylate) PMA‐BA and network poly(hexyl methacrylate) (PHMA) as mechanophores to detect the stress caused by ultrasound, freezing, and compression. The DA mechanophores undergo retro‐DA reaction to release 9‐styrylanthracene chromophore upon applying force, resulting in cyan fluorescence. The dissociation ratio of the DA mechanophore after pulsed ultrasonication of PMA‐BA solution for 240 minutes is estimated to be 52% by absorption spectra and 1H NMR. Additionally, the rate constant of mechanical cleavage is calculated to be 1.2×10−4 min−1·kDa−1 with the decrease in molecular weight from 69 to 22 kDa measured by gel permeation chromatography. Freezing of PHMA gels as well as compression of PHMA bulk samples turn‐on the DA mechanophores, revealing the microscale fracture. Photon upconversion responses toward various force stimuli are also achieved in both polymer solutions and bulk samples by doping platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP) or palladium meso‐tetraphenyltetrabenzoporphyrin (PdTPTBP) sensitizers with multiple excitation wavelengths.

Abstract:The rapid development of mechano‐responsive fluorescence has been driven by its promising applications in the fields of sensors, information encryption, and anti‐counterfeiting. However, designing mechanophores that can exhibit fluorescence changes under relatively low force remains challenging. In this study, a mechano‐responsive fluorescent gel was developed using a tetraphenylethylene derivative as a cross‐linker, producing a dynamic covalent network that exhibits increased fluorescence under tensile stress. Based on controlled experimental studies and molecular modeling calculations, the fluorescence enhancement by external forces was attributed to the restriction of intramolecular motion in tetraphenylethylene by macromolecular chain orientation. In time‐dependent experiments, due to the exchange of dynamic covalent bonds, the stress relaxation and the decrease in fluorescence intensity of the gel at fixed strain occurred simultaneously, demonstrating the potential of this fluorescence as an indication of internal stress through aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) type mechanophore.

Abstract:A new family of mechanochromic photonic-crystal fibers exhibits tunable structural colors under stretching. This novel mechanochromic fiber is prepared by depositing polymer microspheres onto a continuous aligned-carbon-nanotube sheet that has been wound on an elastic poly(dimethylsiloxane) fiber, followed by further embedding in poly(dimethylsiloxane). The color of the fiber can be tuned by varying the size and the center-to-center distance of the polymer spheres. It further experiences reversible and rapid multicolor changes during the stretch and release processes, for example, between red, green, and blue. Both the high sensitivity and stability were maintained after 1000 deformation cycles. These elastic photonic-crystal fibers were woven into patterns and smart fabrics for various display and sensing applications.
Polymer Mechanochromism from Force-Tuned Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer

Abstract:Real-time monitoring of strain/stress in polymers is a big challenge to date. Herein, we for the first time report an ESIPT (excited-state intramolecular proton transfer)-based mechanochromic mechanophore (MM). The synthesis of target MM PhMz-4OH [(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole with four aliphatic hydroxyls] is quite facile. PhMz-4OH possesses characteristic dual emissions, and its ESIPT activity is greatly affected by steric hindrance. Then, PhMz-4OH was covalently linked into polyurethane chains (PhMz-4OH@PU). Upon stretching, the PhMz-4OH@PU films showed fluorescence color change and spectral variation with the increase in enol emission and blueshift of keto emission due to the force-induced torsion of the dihedral angle between the proton donor and the proton acceptor. The PhMz-4OH@PU films with high mechanophore concentrations (>0.36 mol %) might undergo a two-stage force-responsive process, including torsion of the dihedral angle via force-induced disaggregation and direct chain-transduced force-induced torsion of the dihedral angle. The intensity ratio of enol emission to keto emission (IE/IK) shows a quantitative correlation with elongation, and real-time strain sensing is achieved. PhMz-4OH is a successful type II MM (without covalent bond scission) and displays high sensitivity and excellent reversibility to stress. Two control structures PhMz-NH2 and PhMz-2OH were also embedded into PU but no spectral or color changes were detected, further confirming that mechanochromism of PhMz-4OH@PU films arises from the chain-transduced force. Density function theory (DFT) calculation was performed to study the force-tuned ESIPT process theoretically and rationalize the experimental results. This study might lay the foundation for real-time stress/strain sensing in practical applications.
Mechanically Responsive Luminescent Polymers Based on Supramolecular Cyclophane Mechanophores

Abstract:A new approach to cyclophane-based supramolecular mechanophores is presented. We report a mechanically responsive cyclic motif that contains two fluorescent 1,6-bis(phenylethynyl)pyrene moieties that are capable of forming intramolecular excimers. The emission spectra of dilute solutions of this cyclophane and a polyurethane elastomer into which a small amount of the mechanophore (0.08 wt %) had been covalently integrated are dominated by excimer emission. Films of the cyclophane-containing polyurethane also display a considerable portion of excimer emission, but upon deformation, the fluorescence becomes monomer-dominated and a perceptible change from cyan to blue is observed. The response is instant, reversible, and consistent with a mechanically induced change of the molecular conformation of the mechanophore so that the excimer-promoting interactions between the luminophores are suppressed. In-depth investigations show a correlation between the applied strain and the emission color, which can conveniently be expressed by the ratio of monomer to excimer emission intensity. A Simple Mechanochromic Mechanophore Based on Aminothiomaleimide

Abstract:Mechanochromic mechanophores have promising applications in stress sensing and damage detection. Here we report a simple mechanofluorochromic mechanophore based on aminothiomaleimide (ATM). Poly(methyl acrylate) containing this mechanophore (ATM-PMA) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using an ATM-derived difunctional initiator. To investigate its mechanofluorochromism, the solution of ATM-PMA was subjected to ultrasonication, and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and fluorescence spectroscopy were employed to monitor the changes in molecular weight and fluorescence emission. The results showed that the molecular weight of ATM-PMA decreased upon ultrasonication, accompanied by a shift of fluorescence emission from bright yellow to light blue. This mechanophore of a simple functional group of ATM has great potential to be used in mechanochromic polymer materials.

Abstract:Multi-network elastomers are both stiff and tough by virtue of containing a pre-stretched stiff network that can rupture and dissipate energy under load. However, the rupture of this sacrificial network in all described covalent multi-network elastomers is irreversible. Herein, we describe the first example of multi-network elastomers with a reformable sacrificial network containing mechanochemically sensitive anthracene-dimer cross-links. These cross-links also make our elastomers mechanochromic, with coloration that is both persistent and reversible, because the fluorogenic moiety (anthracene dimer) is regenerated upon irradiation of the material. In proof-of-concept experiments we demonstrate the utility of incorporating anthracene dimers in the backbone of the sacrificial network for monitoring mechanochemical remodeling of multi-network elastomers under cycling mechanical load. Stretching or compressing these elastomers makes them fluorescent and irradiating them eliminates the fluorescence by regenerating anthracene dimers. Reformable mechanochromic cross-links, exemplified by anthracene dimers, hold potential for enabling detailed studies of the molecular origin of the unique mechanical properties of multi-network elastomers.
Ring-Size Dependent Ratiometric Photoluminescence of Cyclophane Mechanophores

Abstract:Mechanochromic mechanophores which instantly and reversibly change their photoluminescence color are suitable molecular probes for the in-situ visualization and detection of forces that arise in polymers. Here, we report that the ring size significantly affects the ratiometric photoluminescence of cyclophane mechanophores whose working mechanism relies on the dissociation of intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) complexes. We compare three cyclophanes, which each feature a 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BPA) group and one pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) in their cycle. These aromatic groups were connected with linkers of different lengths. In toluene solutions, all cyclophanes display suppressed BPA emission in comparison to a linear BPA model compound, and a red-shifted emission band associated with a BPA:PMDI CT complex is observed. The extent of CT formation scales inversely with the length of the spacers and is thus largest for the smallest cyclophane. The three cyclophanes were covalently incorporated into segmented polyurethane elastomers, which were processed into thin films. In the stress-free state, films of the three materials all display roughly equal monomer and CT emission intensity. Upon uniaxial deformation, this ratio changes in favor of the monomer emission. The changes were very pronounced for the polymer containing the largest cyclophane, and very small in the material containing the smallest mechanophore. Thus, the data show clearly that the mechanoresponse of cyclophane mechanophores strongly depends on the ring size, which dictates to what extent the chromophores can interact in the absence and presence of an applied force.
