Abstract:Summary form only given. Since early 1980s, the incidence of invasive and opportunistic mycoses has significantly increased, resulting in excessive mortality and morbidity. As a species of fungi and one of the major oral pathogens, Candida Albicans can get adhered to prosthesis and easily lead to denture stomatitis, which is a common recurring disease observed in 67% of otherwise healthy denture wearers. At present, the main treatment for denture stomatitis is pharmacotherapy and physical method. However, resistance to antifungal agents is so common that it always resulted in treatment failure. As a promising technology, cold plasma has drawn much interest in biomedical field. A few studies have indicated that cold plasma might be an efficient treatment for mycosis. Accordingly, in this study, we applied cold plasma to oral Candida Albicans biofilm and explore its potential effect on denture stomatitis. Direct current and alternating current cold PMJs were employed to treat the Candida Albicans biofilm formed on denture base resin for 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 minutes with different working gases. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to observe the morphology change and results showed that evident cell rupture was observed in experimental groups compared with control groups. By using CFU counting method, it was observed that the biofilm can be killed completely in 8min in four plasma groups. Introcellular protein (ICP) was measured with BCA protein assay reagent and the results indicated that the protein concentration of treated groups dropped remarkably over the prolonged treatment, which suggested that the mechanism underlying the sterilization phenomenon was strongly associated with protein loss. Besides, drug susceptibility was evaluated by using amphotericin B and fluconazole as antifungal drug. Results suggested that strains treated with plasma showed a higher sensitivity to antifungal drugs when compared with control groups; and the IC50 dropped significantly for each treating group over the prolonged treatment. In conclusion, AC and DC driven plasma alone or assisted with drug therapy can provide a valuable tool for Candida Albicans infection, and it will be helpful for protecting denture based resin from denture stomatitis.

Abstract:This work studies the antimycotic effects of different cold atmospheric‐pressure plasma (CAP) sources. A eucaryotic yeast Candida glabrata has been selected as a representative of non‐albicans candida species, whose pathogenicity has dramatically increased in the past decades. The results affirm the antimycotic effects of CAP and set bases for further measurements (in vivo and clinical trials) that may lead to the plasma treatment of superficial mycosis caused by the yeast Candida. Four different cold plasma sources were directly applied onto a 24h inoculum of Candida glabrata inoculated on agar plates, within the limits of in vitro experiment. Their effects were compared and evaluated with respect to the size and stability of the inhibition zones formed in the posttreatment cultivation. The results prove significant inhibitory cold atmospheric‐pressure plasma effects on the yeast C. glabrata. The overall inhibitory effects are directly proportional to the treatment time, the applied power, and the overall functioning of the plasma source and indirectly proportional to the initial cell concentration, although this factor was less significant compared to the other examined factors. The unipolar microwave torch was found to be the most effective in the inhibition of C. glabrata.

Abstract:A direct-current, atmospheric-pressure, He/O2 (2%) cold plasma microjet is applied to Candida species (C. glabrata, C. albicansand C. krusei). Effective inactivation is achieved both in air and in water within 5 min of plasma treatment. Same plasma treatment also successfully inactivated candida biofilms on Petri dish. The inactivation was verified by cell viability test (XTT assay). Severe deformation of Candida biofilms after the plasma treatment was observed through scanning electron microscope (SEM). Optical emission spectroscopy shows strong atomic oxygen emission at 777 nm. Hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide anion radical (•O2-) and singlet molecular oxygen (1O2) are detected by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The sessile minimal inhibitory concentrations (SMICs) of fluconazole, amphotericin B, and caspofungin against the Candida spp. biofilms were decreased to 2-6 fold dilutions in plasma microjet treated group in comparison with the controls. This novel approach may become a new tool for the treatment of clinical dermatosis
Transcriptome analysis of Candida albicans planktonic cells in response to plasma medicine

Abstract:Introduction. Cold plasma is frequently utilized for the purpose of eliminating microbial contaminants. Under optimal conditions, it can function as plasma medicine for treating various diseases, including infections caused by Candida albicans, an opportunistic pathogen that can overgrow in individuals with weakened immune system.Gap Statement. To date, there has been less molecular study on cold plasma-treated C. albicans.Research Aim. The study aims to fill the gap in understanding the molecular response of C. albicans to cold plasma treatment.Methodology. This project involved testing a cold plasma generator to determine its antimicrobial effectiveness on C. albicans' planktonic cells. Additionally, the cells' transcriptomics responses were investigated using RNA sequencing at various treatment durations (1, 3 and 5 min).Results. The results show that our cold plasma effectively eliminates C. albicans. Cold plasma treatment resulted in substantial downregulation of important pathways, such as 'nucleotide metabolism', 'DNA replication and repair', 'cell growth', 'carbohydrate metabolism' and 'amino acid metabolism'. This was an indication of cell cycle arrest of C. albicans to preserve energy consumption under unfavourable conditions. Nevertheless, C. albicans adapted its GSH antioxidant system to cope with the oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species, reactive nitrogen species and other free radicals. The treatment likely led to a decrease in cell pathogenicity as many virulence factors were downregulated.Conclusion. The study demonstrated the major affected pathways in cold plasma-treated C. albicans, providing valuable insights into the molecular response of C. albicans to cold plasma treatment. The findings contribute to the understanding of the antimicrobial efficiency of cold plasma and its potential applications in the field of microbiology.

Abstract:The antimicrobial effects of the cold plasma for the dental pathogenic microorganism propose a promising approach to the Denture Stomatitis (DS) treatment. However, it is crucial to understand that the complexity of the biofilm microenvironment may compromise the efficiency of the therapy. As one of the major issue for DS, Candida albicans biofilms (ATCC10231) formed on denture base resins were treated by cold Ar/O 2 (2 %) plasma jet. Spatial viability of the biofilms was investigated with confocal scanning laser microscopy through evaluating their inside cross-section properties. Results showed Candida albicans biofilms with thickness of ~100 µm was completely inactivated by 8 min plasma treatment. Morphology change of the fungi was also observed by the scanning electron microscopy. Drug susceptibilities, the sessile minimum inhibitory concentration (SMIC50) of the biofilm for amphotericin B and fluconazole were decreased from >32 and >256 µg/mL to 8 and 64 µg/mL after 1 min’s plasma treatment, respectively. The reactive species produced from plasma were monitored by optical emission spectroscopy. The successfully inactivation of Candida albicans biofilms and the significant enhancement of its drug susceptibilities induced by the plasma released reactive species propose a promising strategy for the treatment of DS caused by drug-resistant Candida albicans biofilms.

Abstract:(1) Background: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of several sessions of the antibacterial protocol of complex electromagnetic fields (CMFs) on planktonic Candida albicans and fungal ability, after treatment with CMFs, to adhere and proliferate on acrylic resin materials. (2) Methods: Planktonic overnight cultures of Candida albicans were subjected to different entities of CMFs treatments. Four test groups were compared: “p1”: treated only with the first program of the antibacterial protocol; “p1–p5” subjected to the first five programs; “1 antibacterial” received one complete session of the protocol and “2 antibacterial” received two complete sessions. After the treatments, the number of colony forming units (CFUs) were recorded. Then, C. albicans broth cultures were cultivated on polyacrylic resin discs and evaluated for CFUs and subjected to scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. (3) Results: Microbiological analysis showed that CMFs promoted a significant reduction of C. albicans CFUs when the protocol “p1–p5” was applied. No statistically significant differences between test groups were observed if the time of exposure to CMFs was increased. SEM observations and CFUs showed that CMFs treatments have the ability to reduce C. albicans adherence and proliferation on discs. (4) Conclusions: The CMFs showed an antifungal effect as well as a decrease in C. albicans adhesion on polyacrylic resin.

Abstract:Introduction: Candida albicans survival tests on PCV carriers are necessary for the proper determination of the effectiveness yeasticidal activity of disinfectants. C. albicans is a pathogenic microorganism that causes fungal diseases and therefore its spread in the medical and non-medical areas should be limited by disinfection. Methods: Survival of C. albicans was estimated with using principles of PN-EN 16615 standard. Suspension of C. albicans with interfering substances (0,3 g/l bovine albumin) was dry on PCV carriers under a laminar chamber without fan, at the ambient temperature for no longer than 60 minutes. C. albicans was recovered from the carriers immediately after drying and after contact time (1; 5, 10, 20, 40; 60 minutes). Results: The drying conditions applied reduced the recovery of C. albicans from 1.21 to 2.07 on a logarithmic decimal scale with respect to the test suspension with interfering substances. The difference between the recovery immediately after drying and the recovery after the tested contact times (up to 60 minutes) was insignificant. Conclusions: Achieving the number of C. albicans after the drying process, as provided for in PN-EN 16615, requires further improvement of the drying conditions or an increase of C. albicans suspension density before drying.
Effects of nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) on the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans: an in vitro study

Abstract:Candida albicans is the leading human fungal pathogen that causes many life-threatening infections. Notably, the current clinical trial data indicate that Candida species shows the emerging resistance to anti-fungal drugs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal effects of nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) as a novel drug-free strategy in vitro. In this study, we investigated the inactivation and permeabilization effects of C. albicans under different nsPEFs exposure conditions (100 pulses, 100 ns in duration, intensities of 20, 40 kV cm(-1)). Cell death was studied by annexin-V and propidium iodide staining. The changes of intracellular Ca2+ concentration after nsPEFs treatment were observed using Fluo-4 AM. Results show that C. albicans cells and biofilms were both obviously inhibited and destroyed after nsPEFs treatment. Furthermore, C. albicans cells were significantly permeabilized after nsPEFs treatment. Additionally, nsPEFs exposure led to a large amount of DNA and protein leakage. Importantly, nsPEFs induced a field strength-dependent apoptosis in C. albicans cells. Further experiments revealed that Ca2+ involved in nsPEFs induced C. albicans apoptosis. In conclusion, this proof-of-concept study provides a potential alternative drug-free strategy for killing pathogenic Candida species.
Electropermeabilization Effect of Nanoelectropulse on Candida Albicans: an in Vitro Study

Abstract:Candida albicans is an opportunistic human fungal pathogen t hat normally resides in the digestive system. The Candida albicans cell wall is composed of mannoprotein, β-Glucan and chitin. To explore the antitumor activity of components produced by Candida albicans, nanoelectropulse was introduced in t his study. Candida albicans viability after nanoelectropulse exposure were assessed by colony-forming unit (CFU) assay and fluorescence microscope. Morphological changes of Can dida albicans were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, the total nitric oxide concentration after nanoelectropulse exposure were estimated by the total nitric oxide assay Kit. Finally, the antitumor activity of Candida albicans components were investigated by CCK-8 assay and Annexin V-FITC/PI apoptosis assay in Hela and Cal-27 cancer cell line s. Results suggested that there is a window effect of nanoelectropulse on Candida albicans. High field strength (40kV/cm, 100 pulses) of nanoelectropulse has an electropermeabilizatio n effect on Candida albicans. Additionally, Candida albicans components isolated from 40kV/cm, 100 pulses exhibited good antitumor activity against Hela and Cal-27 cancer cell line s. More importantly, our results revealed that nanoectropulse can significantly affects the Candida albicans to get β-Glucan and Nitric Oxide. Undoubtedly, β-Glucan and Nitric Oxide play an important role in anticancer activity. This is a proof-of-concept study, and provides the first evidence of the nanoectropulse might take Candida albicans for further potential deve lopment as a valuable therapeutic option for cancer patients.

Abstract:Candida albicans is a highly drug-resistant fungus for which new treatments are urgently needed due to the lack of clinically effective options. In this study, we evaluated the antifungal activity and mechanism of plasma-activated Ezhangfeng Cuji (PAEC) against Candida albicans and compared it with physiological saline (PS), plasma-activated physiological saline (PAPS) and Ezhangfeng Cuji (EC). After dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment with EC for 20 min followed by a 10 min immersion of Candida albicans , the fungus was reduced by approximately 3 orders of magnitude. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) results showed an increase of 41.18% and 129.88% in the concentration of oxymatrine and rhein, respectively, after plasma-treated EC. The concentrations of reactive species (RS), such as H 2 O 2 , , and O 3 , were found to be higher and the pH value was getting lower in PS after plasma treatment. Detailed analysis of intracellular material leakage, reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis for Candida albicans and observation by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that PAPS, EC and PAEC disrupt the morphological structure of Candida albicans to varying degrees.Additionally, specific analyses on Candida albicans virulence factors, such as adhesion to tissue surfaces, cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH), the transition of yeast-phase cells to mycelium-phase cells, and the secretion of hydrolytic enzymes for Candida albicans were conducted and found to be inhibited after PAPS/EC/PAEC treatment. In our investigation, the inhibitory effects on Candida albicans were ranked from strong to weak as follows: PAEC, EC, PAPS, and PS.

Abstract:We investigated the antifungal effect of non-thermal plasma, as well as its combination with common antifungal drugs, against Candida biofilms. A direct current atmospheric pressure He/O-2 (2%) plasma microjet (PMJ) was used to treat Candida biofilms in a 96-well plate. Inactivation efficacies of the biofilms were evaluated by XTT assay and counting colony forming units (CFUs). Morphological properties of the biofilms were evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The sessile minimal inhibitory concentrations (SMICs) of fluconazole, amphotericin B, and caspofungin for the biofilms were also tested. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to detect the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated directly and indirectly by PMJ. The Candida biofilms were completely inactivated after 1 min PMJ treatment, where severely deformed fungal elements were observed in SEM images. The SMICs of the tested antifungal drugs for the plasma-treated biofilms were decreased by 2-6 folds of dilution, compared to those of the untreated controls. ROS such as hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot), superoxide anion radical (O-center dot(2)) and singlet molecular oxygen (O-1(2)) were detected by ESR. We hence conclude that He/O-2 (2%) plasma alone, as well as in combination with common antifungal drugs, is able to inactivate Candida biofilms rapidly. The generation of ROS is believed to be one of the underlying mechanisms for the fungicidal activity

Abstract:Candida albicans comprises over 80% of isolates from all forms of human candidiasis. Biofilm formation enhances their capacity to withstand therapeutic treatments. In addition to providing protection, biofilm formation by C. albicans enhances its pathogenicity. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms underlying biofilm formation is crucial to advance our understanding and treatment of invasive Candida infections. An initial screening of 57 Candida spp. isolates using CHROMagar Candida (CHROMagar) media revealed that 46 were C. albicans. Of these, 12 isolates (33.3%) had the capacity to form biofilms. These 12 isolates were subjected to multiple biochemical and physiological tests, as well as 18 S rRNA sequencing, to confirm the presence of C. albicans. Upon analysis of their sensitivity to conventional antifungal agents, the isolates showed varying resistance to terbinafine (91.6%), voriconazole (50%), and fluconazole (42%). Among these, only CD50 showed resistance to all antifungal agents. Isolate CD50 also showed the presence of major biofilm-specific genes such as ALS3, EFG1, and BCR1, as confirmed by PCR. Exposure of CD50 to gentamicin-miconazole, a commonly prescribed drug combination to treat skin infections, resulted in elevated levels of gene expression, with ALS3 showing the highest fold increase. These observations highlight the necessity of understanding the proteins involved in biofilm formation and designing ligands with potential antifungal efficacy.

Abstract:In this paper, a direct-current, atmospheric-pressure, He/O2 (2%) cold plasma microjet (PMJ) was applied to Trichophyton rubrum (the most frequent dermatophyte), Candida spp (which causes thrush and vaginal candidiasis) and three other types of fungi. Effective inactivation was achieved both in air and in water within 5 min of plasma treatment [1]. Ten dermatosis biofilms (C. glabrata ,C. albicans, C. krusei) were also performed, effective inactivation was also observed. The inactivation was verified by a XTT test. Severely deformation of the biofilms was observed after PMJ treatment through SEM. The existence of ·OH, ·O2, O2 was verified by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Optical emission spectroscopy also showed strong atomic oxygen emissions in air. The sessile minimal inhibitory concentrations (SMICs) of three antifungal medicines against the Candida spp. biofilms were decreased to 2-6 fold dilutions in PMJ treated group in comparison with untreated controls. This novel approach holds potential in clinical treatment of dermatosis.

Abstract:Background: Candida albicans is a prevalent commensal that can cause severe health problems in humans. One such condition that frequently returns after treatment is oral candidiasis. Aim: the goal of this research is to evaluate the efficiency of 940 nm as a fungicidal on the growth of Candida albicans in vitro. Material and Methods: In vitro samples (fungal swabs) were taken from the oral cavity of 75 patients suffering from oral thrush. Following the process of isolating and identifying Albicans. The samples are divided into four groups:(Group 1): Suspension of C. albicans was put in a solution of saline as a control group. (Group 2): Suspension of C. albicans that had been treated with nystatin. (Group 3): Suspension of C. albicans was irradiated by diode laser 940 nm at 1 W for 300 seconds in continuous mode. (Group 4): C. albicans suspension was irradiated by laser in a combination of nystatin. ANOVA, Dunnett t, and LSD tests were used to examine the data. A highly significant statistical variation in the count of C. Albicans before and after therapy. Results: The result of this study, finds that the reduction in the CFU/ml in group 4 (laser+nystatin) is highly significant and diode laser has a fungicidal effect on the growth of candida albicans. Conclusion: using a 940 nm diode laser (continuous mode) in a combination of antifungal (nystatin) acts as a fungicidal effect on Candida albicans.
In Vitro Effect of a High-Intensity Laser on Candida albicans Colony Count

Abstract:Introduction: This study assessed the effect of a high-intensity laser on Candida albicans colony count. Methods: This in vitro, experimental study was conducted on standard-strain C. albicans (ATCC18804). Seventy-two samples with two different concentrations of C. albicans (104 cells/mL and 106 cells/mL) were randomly assigned to three groups of control, laser and nystatin. Each group included 12 samples from each concentration. In the nystatin group, 10 cc of nystatin suspension was added to the samples and mixed for 30-60 seconds. In the laser group, the Ga-Al-Ar diode laser with a 940-nm wavelength and 2-W power was irradiated to the samples with 0.4 mm tip diameter in non-contact mode (1-mm distance) at a speed of 1 mm/s. The suspensions in the three groups were cultured on the Sabouraud dextrose agar culture medium and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. The number of C. albicans colonies was then counted and reported. The three groups were compared by ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha=0.05). Results: In both concentrations, the mean colony count in the nystatin group was significantly lower than that in the control (P<0.05) and laser (P<0.05) groups. The mean colony count in the laser group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The high-intensity laser with a 940-nm wavelength and 2-W power in non-contact mode can significantly decrease the C. albicans colony count in vitro, but its effect is lower than that of nystatin.

Abstract:Atmospheric-pressure cold plasma was applied to process the surface of heat-polymerized acrylic resin. Changes to the physical properties and early adherence of Candida albicans were investigated. Alternating current cold plasma with Ar/O2 as working gas was used. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to study the possible mechanism. Experimental results showed that after plasma treatment, the contact angle of acrylic resin significantly decreased. There were no significant differences in roughness, flexural strength and elasticity modulus, but microhardness was significant improved in the treated group. More importantly, the early adherence of Candida albicans on the surface was reduced after plasma treatment. Cold plasma seemed to be a promising and convenient strategy of preventing the early adherence of Candida albicans on acrylic resins, which would greatly benefit potential dental applications.

Abstract:Heat curing acrylic resin is an important kind of material in the prosthetic dentistry, which has been widely used in dentar e base, and the oral cavity is colonized with Candida albicans among approximately 75% of persons with dentures. In this study, alternating-current (AC) atmospheric-pressure Ar/O2 (2%) cold plasma was applied to treat the surface of th e heating curing acrylic resin, then the changes of the physica l properties and the early adherence of Candida albicans were observed. After AC plasma treatment, the surf ace hydrophilicity improved significantly. Besides, there wer e no significant differences in roughness, flexuaral strength a nd modulus of elasticity before and after AC plasma treatmen t. But interestedly, it was observed that Vickers microhardnes s had significant improvement after plasma treatment, and it was believed helpful for anti-etching ability. The early adhere nce of Candida albicans reduced after treatment. X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) and optical emission spectrum (OES) were employed to study the mechanism. After AC plas ma treatment, the C and O proportion reduced significantly, a nd new groups C-OH and -CF3 were generated on the surfac e. Actually, there existed plenty of .OH in the plasma compo nents according to the OES result. C-OH was the hydrophilic group that might lead to the improvement of surface wettabili ty. Since -CF3 is a polar group, it may be related to the adhesi on mechanism of Candida albicans. It is believed that AC no n-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma with Ar/O2 as workin g gas can provide a valuable tool for improving the wettabilit y of heat curing acrylic resin and preventing early adherence of Candida albicans, which will contribute to potential dental applications.
In vitro and in vivo analysis of monotherapy and dual therapy with ethyl caffeate and fluconazole on virulence factors of Candida albicans and systemic candidiasis

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Candida albicans is the most clinically prevalent cause of systemic fungal infections in the immunocompromised population. The biofilm-forming ability of C. albicans confers resistance to conventional antifungal agents. The main aim of this study was to investigate the antifungal effects of ethyl caffeate (EC) alone and in combination with fluconazole (FLU) against C. albicans isolates.METHODS: The single and combined antifungal activities of EC and FLU were evaluated against planktonic and biofilm cells of C. albicans by the checkerboard assay, time-kill test, crystal violet assay, live/dead staining, rhodamine 6G (R6G) efflux analysis and hydrolase activity. Monotherapy and dual therapy of EC and FLU against systemic candidiasis in a mouse model was also evaluated.RESULTS: The results showed that EC+FLU displayed synergism in 14/26 planktonic C. albicans isolates and 11/26 C. albicans biofilms with fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) values ranging between 0.06-0.49 and 0.02-0.38, respectively. Compared with monotherapy, the combination of EC+FLU can markedly inhibit adhesion, yeast-to-hyphae transition, premature and mature biofilm metabolism, hydrolase secretion and drug efflux function of C. albicans Z1407 and Z4935. Moreover, EC can potentiate the antifungal activity of FLU to improve mouse survival, reduce fungal burden and alleviate pathological damage in both C. albicans isolates compared with EC or FLU used alone.CONCLUSION: EC exhibits a moderate antifungal potential but can be a strong synergist with FLU against C. albicans, highlighting the potential of EC in clinical antifungal therapy as a sensitiser.

Abstract:Candida spp. are an important opportunistic pathogen that can represent a possible cause of severe infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals. The clinical impact of Candida spp. depends, in part, on the ability to form biofilms, communities of nestled cells into the extracellular matrix. In this study, we compared the biofilm formation ability of 83 strains of Candida spp. isolated from blood cultures and other materials, such as respiratory samples, urine, and exudate, and their sensitivity to fluconazole (FLZ). Strains were divided into tertiles to establish cut-offs to classify isolates as low, moderate, or high biofilm producers ( 0.839) and biofilms with low, moderate, or high metabolic activity ( 0.183). A non-linear relationship between biofilm production and metabolic activity was found in C. glabrata and C. tropicalis. In addition, the increase in minimum biofilm eradication concentrations (MBEC50) compared to the Minor Inhibitory Concentration (PMIC) of the planktonic form in Candida spp. confirms the role of biofilm in the induction of resistance to FLZ.

Abstract:Background: Candida albicans is the primary pathogen responsible for oral candidiasis. The emerging resistance of fungi to antifungal agents has led to the development of new fungicidal treatments. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the effects of 660, 810, and 940 nm laser wavelengths on nystatin-resistant C. albicans. Methods: In this in vitro study, a standard strain of C. albicans and eight nystatin-resistant isolates were irradiated with 660, 810, and 940 nm diode lasers for 40 and 80 seconds (s) and compared with nystatin. Colony numbers and nystatin susceptibility were evaluated using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Results: All laser wavelengths significantly decreased the colony count of the standard strain of C. albicans, with 40s of 810 nm laser irradiation causing the maximum reduction in colony count (P810 nm < 0.001). Similarly, all laser wavelengths significantly reduced the colony count of nystatin-resistant isolates, and they were more effective than nystatin (unlike with the standard strain) (P < 0.05). The 810 nm laser irradiation for 40s demonstrated the greatest effect on MIC among the laser groups. Conclusions: The 810 nm laser for 40s was the most effective in reducing the colony count of nystatin-resistant C. albicans, and it eliminated resistance in all clinical isolates.
