Abstract:This study presents the synthesis and characterization of a highly conjugated stable diradical molecule composed of a donor–acceptor coupling unit. The optical, electrochemical, and spintronic properties of this molecule were comprehensively investigated. Triphenylamine served as the electron donor, while 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole was utilized as the electron acceptor for constructing the backbone of the diradical molecule. Two pendant nitronyl nitroxide radicals were incorporated onto the triphenylamine moiety. A comparative study between our diradical molecule and a reference counterpart with only a donor group as the coupling unit revealed intriguing differences in optical properties and singlet-to-triplet energy gap. Our findings demonstrate that the D–A effect induces intramolecular charge polarization on the coupling unit, which subsequently influences the spin–spin interactions of the diradical molecules. Thus, our results offer novel insights into the effective preparation of fully conjugated and stable diradicals, as well as providing a convenient approach for tuning the spintronic and magnetic properties of diradical materials.

Abstract:Diradicals, molecules with two unpaired electrons, are reactive intermediates that play an important role in many fields. Their defining feature is the energy difference between their singlet and triplet states, which provides direct information on the extent of their electron exchange interactions. Such knowledge is essential for understanding their diradical character, which is controllable internally by modification of the electronic and steric properties of the substituents. We now report that the energy gap of a diradical in the solid state can also be controlled by an external stimulus. The dication diradical of 4,4''-di(bisphenylamino)-p-terphenyl exhibits two singlet states with different exchange coupling constants at different temperatures as determined by SQUID and EPR measurements. The behavior is induced by the conformation change of the terphenyl bridge, the key structural unit of the species. The work presents an unprecedented instance of a thermally controllable singlet-triplet gap for a crystalline diradical and provides a novel diradical material relevant to the design of functional materials.

Abstract:Buckybowls have been attracting enormous interest due to their distinctive electronic structures and physical properties, but few studies on their magnetic properties. In currently intensive research on organic molecular magnets, the used couplers are generally flatly conjugated structures. But there are few reports on using the curvature coupler to construct molecular magnets. In this work, with triphenylene and its edge-modified derivatives (by the –CH2–, –NH–, or –O– edge-bridging groups) as the couplers, a series of dual nitroxide diradical molecular magnets are designed and their magnetic coupling properties are explored at the density functional theory level. Interestingly, we find that all designed diradicals exhibit antiferromagnetic (AFM) and the coupler curvature can considerably enhance their magnetic coupling strengths. Curvature of the coupler can reduce its aromaticity and increase spin polarization of nitroxide groups, leading to the AFM enhancement. The electronic properties of the bridging groups (–NH–, –O–) can further enhance the AFM coupling strength of the diradicals through manipulating π electron distribution on the coupler, especially with an assistance of intramolecular H-bonds for the –NH– edge-bridge. This work provides insights into magnetic modulation of molecular magnets through curving the couplers and also provides helpful information for constructing the curved molecular magnets.

Abstract:Stable carbon-based polyradicals exhibiting strong spin-spin coupling and slow depolarization processes are particularly attractive functional materials. A new molecular motif synthesized by a convenient method that allows the integration of stable, high-spin radicals to (hetero)aromatic polycycles has been developed, as illustrated by a non-Kekule diradical showing a triplet ground state with long persistency (tau 1/2 approximate to 31 h) in air. Compared to the widely used 1,3-phenylene, the newly designed (diaza)pyrene-4,10-diyl moiety is for the first time demonstrated to confer ferromagnetic (FM) spin coupling, allowing delocalized non-disjoint SOMOs. With the X-ray crystallography unambiguously proving the diradical structure, the triplet ground state was thoroughly characterized. A large Delta ES-T of 1.1 kcal/mol, proving the strong FM coupling effect, was revealed consistently by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements and variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, while the zero-field splitting and triplet nutation characters were examined by continuous-wave and pulsed EPR spectroscopy. A millisecond spin-lattice relaxation time was also detected. The current study not only offers a new molecular motif enabling FM coupling between carbon-based spins, but more importantly presents a general method for installing stable polyradicals into functional pi-systems. A general method has been developed for installing stable polyradicals into polycyclic pi-systems, as illustrated by the formation of an air-stable, high-spin carbon-based diradical with a new ferromagnetic coupling motif of diazapyrene. The structure of the diradical was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, while the magnetic measurements provided unambiguous evidence for the high-spin ground state and a long spin relaxation process.+image

Abstract:Inclusion of quinoidal cores in conjugated hydrocarbons is a common strategy to modulate the properties of diradicaloids formed by aromaticity recovery within the quinoidal unit. Here we describe an alternative approach of tuning of diradical properties in indenoindenodibenzothiophenes upon anti → syn isomerism of the benzothiophene motif. This alters the relationship of the S atom with the radical center from linear to cross conjugation yet retains the same 2,6-naphtho conjugation pattern of the rearomatized core. We conduct a full comparison between the anti and syn derivatives based on structural, spectroscopic, theoretical, and magnetic measurements, showing that these systems are stable open-shell singlet diradicaloids that only access their triplet state at elevated temperatures.

Abstract:Coupling transition metal or lanthanide ions through a radical bridging ligand is a promising route to increase performances in the area of single molecular magnets. A better understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms governing the magnetic exchange couplings is thus of valuable importance to design future compounds. Here, couplings in three series of Metal-Radical-Metal compounds based on transition metal ions are investigated by means of the decomposition/recomposition methods. This work presents the generalisation and first application of the method to systems with an arbitrary number of magnetic centres featuring several unpaired electrons. Thanks to the decomposition into the three main contributions (direct exchange, kinetic exchange, and spin polarisation) as well as a description in terms of electron-electron interactions, we study the influence of the nature of the metal centre and the radical ligand on the couplings. We combine the energetic contributions extracted with orbital and charge population analysis to rationalise the results.

Is Ferromagnetic Spin Coupling Constant Within Homologous Di- and Triradicals?

Abstract:By means of the powerful Lanczos algorithm, the nonempirical valence bond (VB) model has been applied to investigate the low-lying electronic states for three typical types of homologous pi-conjugated di- and triradicals. For small radicals including trimethylenemethane, cyclopentadienyltrimethylenemethane, m-benzoquinodimethane, and trimethylenebenzene, our VB results are in remarkable agreement with those obtained from previous sophisticated ab initio molecular orbital calculations. By using the energy difference between the high-spin ground and first excited states for these molecules, the strength of ferromagnetic coupling in these diradicals and their homologous triradicals has been discussed in detail. Our results reveal that ferromagnetic coupling in diradicals TMM and BQDM will decrease to different extent in their homologous triradicals. However, ferromagnetic coupling strength between two ''unpaired'' electrons in DCPP is found to be 9 times larger than that in its component diradical CPTMM.

Abstract:Two families of difluorenoheterole diradicaloids were synthesized, featuring isomeric ring systems with distinct conjugation topologies. The two types of difluorenoheteroles contain respectively a Chichibabin-like motif (CH) and a newly introduced heteroatom-linked triphenylmethyl dyad (TD-X). Combined experimental and theoretical investigations show that the TD-X systems have a reduced quinoidal character but the interaction between formal spin centers is sufficiently strong to ensure a singlet ground state. The singlet–triplet energy gaps in the TD-X difluorenoheteroles are strongly affected by the heterocyclic ring, with values of –4.3 and –0.7 kcal/mol determined for the pyrrole- and thiophene- containing analogues, respectively. In cyclic voltammetry experiments, the TD-X systems show diminished energy gaps and superior reversibility in comparison with their CH counterparts. The radical anions and cations obtained from these diradicaloids show extremely red-shifted bands, occasionally with λmax > 3500 nm. Computational studies show that some of these ions adopt distonic structures and may be characterized as class-II mixed-valence species.

Conformational tuning of magnetic interactions in coupled nanographenes

Abstract:Phenalenyl (C$_{13}$H$_9$) is an open-shell spin-$1/2$ nanographene. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS), covalently-bonded phenalenyl dimers have been shown to feature conductance steps associated with singlet-triplet excitations of a spin-$1/2$ dimer with antiferromagnetic exchange. Here, we address the possibility of tuning the magnitude of the exchange interactions by varying the dihedral angle between the two molecules within a dimer. Theoretical methods, ranging from density functional theory calculations to many-body model Hamiltonians solved within different levels of approximation, are used to explain STM-IETS measurements of twisted phenalenyl dimers on a h-BN/Rh(111) surface. By means of first-principles calculations, we also propose strategies to induce sizable twist angles in surface-adsorbed phenalenyl dimers via functional groups, including a photoswitchable scheme. This work paves the way toward tuning magnetic couplings in carbon-based spin chains and two-dimensional lattices.

Zero-Bias Anti-Ohmic Behaviour in Diradicaloid Molecular Wires

Abstract:Open-shell materials bearing multiple spin centres hold the key to efficient charge transport in singlemolecule electronic devices. They have very narrow bandgaps, and their partially occupied molecular orbitals align very efficiently to the Fermi level of the metallic electrodes of the single-molecule junction, thus allowing transparent electronic transport and higher conductance. Maintaining and stabilising multiple open-shell states, especially in contact with metallic electrodes is however very challenging, generally requiring a continuous chemical or electrochemical potential to avoid self-immolation of the open-shell character. To overcome this issue, we designed, synthesised, and measured the conductance of a series of bis(indeno) fused acenes, having a diradicaloid structure in resonance with a close-shell quinoidal conformation, providing steric protection with 3,5-dimethylthioanisole anchors to the electrodes and electronic protection against oxidation with tris(isopropyl)ethynyl substituents at the heart of the acene. We show here that these compounds have extremely anti-ohmic behaviour, with conductance increasing with increasing length at an unprecedented rate, across the entire bias window (±1.3 𝑉). Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations support our findings, showing the rapidly narrowing bandgap unique to these diradicaloid structures is responsible for the observed behaviour. Our results provide a framework for achieving efficient transport in neutral compounds and demonstrate the promise that diradicaloid materials have in single-molecule electronics, owing to their great stability and unique electronic structure.

Abstract:A diradical with engineered g‐asymmetry was synthesized by grafting a nitroxide radical onto the [Y(Pc)2] ̇ radical platform. Various spectroscopic techniques and computational studies revealed that the electronic structures of the two spin systems remained minimally affected within the diradical system. Fluid‐solution Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) experiments revealed a weak exchange coupling with |J| ~ 0.014 cm‐1, subsequently rationalized by CAS‐SCF calculations. Frozen solution continuous‐wave (CW) EPR experiments showed a complicated and power‐dependent spectrum that eluded analysis using the point‐dipole model. Pulse EPR manipulations with varying microwave powers, or under varying magnetic fields, demonstrated that different resonances could be selectively enhanced or suppressed, based on their different tipping angles. In particular, Field‐Swept Echo‐Detected (FSED) spectra revealed absorptions of MW power‐dependent intensities, while Field‐Swept Spin Nutation (FSSN) experiments revealed two distinct Rabi frequencies. This study introduces a methodology to synthesize and characterize g‐asymmetric two‐spin systems, of interest in the implementation of spin‐based CNOT gates.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate a set of organic diradical structures in which two oxo-verdazyl radicals are selected as radical spin centers that are connected (coupled) via six coupler molecules (CM), resulting in various magnetic (ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM)) characteristics, as reflected by their exchange coupling constants (J). We have designed 12 diradicals with 6-antiaromatic couplers coupled with bis-oxo-verdazyl diradicals with meta-meta (m-m) and para-meta (p-m) positional connectivities. The nature of the magnetic coupling (ferromagnetic, nonmagnetic, or antiferromagnetic) and the magnitude of the exchange constant J depend on the type of coupler, the connecting point between each radical center and CM, the degree of aromaticity of the coupler, and the length of the through-bond distance between radical centers. The computed magnetic exchange coupling constants J for these diradicals at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) and MN12SX/6-311++G(d,p) levels of theory are large for many of these structures, indicating strong ferromagnetic coupling (with positive J values). In some cases, magnetic couplings are observed with J > 1000 cm-1 (B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p)) and strong antiferromagnetic coupling (with negative J values) with J < -1000 cm-1 (B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p)). Similarly, in some cases, magnetic couplings are observed with J > 289 cm-1 (MN12SX/6-311++G(d,p)) and strong antiferromagnetic coupling (with negative J values) with J < -568 cm-1 (MN12SX/6-311++G(d,p)). Furthermore, while numerous studies have reported that the degree of aromaticity of molecular couplers often favors strong ferromagnetic coupling, displaying the high-spin character of diradicals in their ground states, the couplers chosen in this study are characterized as antiaromatic or nonaromatic. The current investigation provides evidence that, remarkably, antiaromatic couplers are able to enhance stability by favoring electronic diradical structures with very strong ferromagnetic coupling when the length of the through-bond distance and connectivity pattern between radical centers are selected in such a way that the FM coupling is optimized. The findings in this study offer new strategies in the design of novel organic materials with interesting magnetic properties for practical applications.

Double Spin with a Twist: Synthesis and Characterization of a Neutral Mixed-Valence Organic Stable Diradical

Abstract:A convenient design strategy opens access to neutral open-shell mixed-valence species via the redox transformation of charged stable precursors, i.e., the spiro-fused borate anions. We have implemented this strategy for the synthesis of the first neutral mixed-valence diradical: two neutral mixed-valence radical fragments were assembled via a twisted biphenyl bridge. The diradical is a crystalline solid obtained in almost quantitative yield by using a facile synthetic procedure. It is stable at room temperature in the triplet ground state with a very small singlet/triplet gap. This metal-free diradical can reversibly form five redox states. The diradical exhibits an intense IVCT band in the NIR region and can be assigned as a Class 2 Robin-Day MV (mixed valence) system with weakly interacting redox centers. Computations suggest that this diradical finds itself in a unique tug-of-war between two electron delocalization patterns, Kekulé and non-Kekulé, which gives rise to two geometric isomers that are close in energy but drastically different in spin distribution and polarity. Such bistable spin-systems should be intrinsically switchable and promising for the design of functional spin devices. The scope and limitations of the new redox-strategy for the neutral MV radicals were also tested on other types of spiro-fused borates, revealing structural factors responsible for the evolution from transient to persistent and then to stable radicals.
Tuning Radical Interactions in Trisradical Tricationic Complexes by Varying Host-Cavity Sizes

Abstract:Although host-guest pairing interactions between bisradical dicationic cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (BB2(+)) and the bipyridinium radical cation (BIPY+) have been studied extensively, host molecules other than BB2(+) are few and far between. Herein, four bisradical dicationic cyclophanes with tunable cavity sizes are investigated as new bisradical dicationic hosts for accommodating the methyl viologen radical cation (MV+) to form trisradical tricationic complexes. The structure-property relationships between cavity sizes and binding affinities have been established by comprehensive solution and solid-state characterizations as well as DFT calculations. The association constants of the four new trisradical tricationic complexes are found to range between 7400 and 170 000 M-1, with the strongest one being 4.3 times higher than that for [MV subset of BB](3()(+)). The facile accessibility and tunable stability of these new trisradical tricationic complexes make them attractive redox-controlled recognition motifs for further use in supramolecular chemistry and mechanostereochemistry.

Abstract:Conjugated molecules play a critical role in the construction of single-molecule devices. However, most conventional conjugated molecules, such as hydrocarbons, involve only a px-px conjugation of light elements. While the metal d-orbitals can introduce abundant electronic effects to achieve novel electronic properties, it is very scarce for the charge transport study of dx-px conjugated pathways with a metal involved. Here, we employed the single-molecule break junction technique to investigate the charge transport through dx-px conjugated backbones with metal-carbon multiple bonds integrated into the alternative conjugated pathways. The involved dx-px conjugation not only supports high conductivity comparable to that of conjugated hydrocarbons but also significantly enhances the tunable diversity in electronic properties through the metal-induced secondary interaction. Specifically, the introduction of the metal brings an unconventionally stereoelectronic effect triggered by metal-carbon dx-px hyperconjugation, which can be tuned by protonation taking place on the metal-carbon multiple bonds, collectively modulating the single-molecule rectification feature and transmission mechanism. This work demonstrates the promise of utilizing the diverse electronic effect of metals to design molecular devices.

Abstract:Molecular assembly with magnetic bistability has been of considerable interest for application as electronic devices. In contrast to transition-metal complexes, magnetic bistability so far observed in organic radical crystals is mainly caused by intermolecular electron-exchange interaction. We now report that the magnetic bistability in an organic radical can also be caused by intramolecular electron-exchange interaction. The diradical salt of 1,4-di(bisphenylamino)-2,3,5,6,-tetramethylbenzene undergoes a phase transition with a thermal hysteresis loop over the temperature range from 118 to 131 K. The phases above and below the loop correspond to two different singlet states of the diradical dication. The results provide a novel organic radical material as an unprecedented instance of an intramolecular magnetic bistability revalent to the design of functional materials.

Abstract:The magnetic properties of a nanoscale system are inextricably linked to its local environment. In adatoms on surfaces and inorganic layered structures, the exchange interactions result from the relative lattice positions, layer thicknesses, and other environmental parameters. Here, we report on a sample-dependent sign inversion of the magnetic exchange coupling between the three unpaired spins of an organic triradical molecule embedded in a three-terminal device. This ferro-to-antiferromagnetic transition is due to structural distortions and results in a high-to-low spin ground-state change in a molecule traditionally considered to be a robust high-spin quartet. Moreover, the flexibility of the molecule yields an in situ electric tunability of the exchange coupling via the gate electrode. These findings open a route to the controlled reversal of the magnetic states in organic molecule-based nanodevices by mechanical means, electrical gating, or chemical tailoring.

Abstract:The first triradical bridged binuclear penta-spin single-molecule magnet, [Dy-2(hfac)(6)(BTR)], based on a nitronyl nitroxide triradical was synthesized and characterized. Theoretical calculations revealed Dy-radical anti-ferromagnetic coupling and radical-radical ferromagnetic coupling. The SMM behavior is found to originate from the exchange states, rather than the isolated Dy3+ center.
