Abstract:Chiral metamirror is one of the recently developed metadevices which can reflect designated circularly polarized waves, mimicking the exoskeleton of iridescent green beetles. Here, an optically transparent metamirror that can absorb microwave chiral photons in a broadband spectrum is demonstrated. A coupled mode theory is adopted to reveal the underlying physics for the improved bandwidth performance. Excellent agreements have been observed between numerical and experimental results, indicating a bandwidth for chiral absorption as high as 2.37 GHz. The optical transparence of the resistive patterns and substrate make the designed metamirrors suitable as microwave coatings in front of optical devices, which may find potential applications in cascaded optical systems working for both microwave and optical signals.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have been widely investigated for various applications enabled by their strong light manipulation capabilities. Their monolithic designs offer the convenience to incorporate novel natural materials in order to realize advanced electromagnetic (EM) functionalities. Here, based on the usage of the phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO2). a switchable metasurface that could work at two different working states is proposed. With insulating VO2, we show that helicity-dependent metasurface could be rigorously designed by adopting two phase variables, i.e., initial phase and Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase, which is verified by showing an asymmetric photonic spin Hall effect (APSHE). When VO2 goes into the metallic phase (e.g.. by raising the operating temperature above similar to 341K), the loss factor of the unit cell will be enhanced. and in this case with the assistance of multimode resonances, the metasurface will turn into a perfect broadband circular-polarization-insensitive EM absorber. Based on these, switchable beam splitters and focus-lenses have been designed and discussed in the paper. Abstract:Understanding and controlling chirality are important because of its ubiquity in nature. In recent years, we have witnessed the rapid development of chiral metamaterials with exceptional light-manipulating capabilities. Here, we present a design for photonic heterostructures in chiral photonics, demonstrating that photonic heterostructures stacked from achiral metasurfaces can create distinctive chiroptical functionalities. Analyses based on the symmetry group and microscopic dipolar interactions at two-dimensional boundaries reveal the implicit mechanism of the interlayer coupling in photonic heterostructures. By flip stacking, the photonic heterostructure gives rise to an asymmetric chiral phase from achiral composites, and hence, provides the full spin-flipped scattering of incident photons. Incident electromagnetic waves with arbitrary polarization orientations can be efficiently separated into two orthogonal circularly polarized ones with orthogonal trajectories, leading to an ideal circular beam splitter. This effect is experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies via the measurement of a scattering matrix. Due to its generality and scalability, we expect the methodology of photonic heterostructure might open up an alternative pathway for exploring intriguing and advanced metamaterials over a broad wavelength range.

Abstract:Spin-selective reflection metadevices are usually realized by using chiral metamirrors that can reflect one state of circularly polarized (CP) waves and restrain the other one. However, most of the chiral metamirrors only exhibit chirality in a narrow band, which may impede their potential applications. Here, we propose a Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) coding metasurface composed of the spin-decoupled elements to realize broadband spin-selective reflections with arbitrary wavefront manipulations. The spin-selective anomalous reflection is designed and measured to validate the performance of the proposed PB coding metasurface. Both simulation and experiment results show that the designated CP wave can be efficiently reflected without reversing the spin state, while at the same time, its orthogonally polarized wave is suppressed by random diffusion, in a broad band from 16 to 24 GHz. The results also reveal that the proposed PB coding metasurface has the chiral-like characteristics, even though it is composed of nonchiral meta-elements.

Abstract:Because of the strong inherent resonances, the giant optical activity obtained via chiral metamaterials generally suffers from high dispersion, which has been a big stumbling block to broadband applications. In this paper, we propose a type of chiral metamaterial consisting of interconnected metal helix structures with four-fold symmetry, which exhibits nonresonant Drude-like response and can therefore avoid the highly dispersive optical activity resulting from resonances. It shows that the well-designed chiral metamaterial can achieve nondispersive and pure optical activity with high transmittance in a broadband frequency range. And the optical activity of multi-layer chiral metamaterials is proportional to the layer numbers of single-layer chiral metamaterial. Most remarkably, the broadband behaviors of nondispersive optical activity and high transmission are insensitive to the incident angles of electromagnetic waves and permittivity of dielectric substrate, thereby enabling more flexibility in polarization manipulation.

Abstract:Chiral metamirrors are recently proposed metadevices that have the ability of selective reflection for the designated circularly polarized waves. However, previous chiral metamirrors only work in a narrow band, which would limit their potential applications in engineering. Here, we propose an approach towards broadband spin-selective absorption. By combining the chiral resonant modes of two asymmetric split-ring resonators, we design and construct a chiral metamirror that absorbs only the left-handed circularly waves over a broad frequency range. The measured results show a bandwidth of 5.1%, almost 96% larger than that of the narrowband metamirror. Furthermore, the proposed chiral metamirror exhibits prominent performance at oblique incidence, even when high-order diffraction appears. The total thickness of the metamirror is only one-ninth of the wavelength, highly suitable for on-chip integration. Our findings may provide an efficient approach to boost the working bandwidth of the chiral metamirror and could advance its applications in optical instruments. Published by AIP Publishing.
Broadband Binary-Reflection-phase Metasurfaces with Undistorted Transmission Wavefront Via Mirror Symmetry

Abstract:In this work, we report the realization of broadband binary-reflection-phase metasurfaces that simultaneously exhibit undistorted transmission wavefront. Such a unique functionality is bestowed by leveraging mirror symmetry in the metasurface design. Under the normal incidence of waves polarized along the mirror surface, a broadband binary-phase pattern with π phase difference is induced in the cross-polarized reflection, while the co-polarized transmission and reflection are unaffected by the binary-phase pattern. Consequently, the cross-polarized reflection can be flexibly manipulated by designing the binary-phase pattern, without distorting the wavefront in transmission. The phenomena of reflected-beam splitting and undistorted transmission wavefront are hereby experimentally validated in a broad bandwidth from 8 GHz to 13 GHz. Our findings reveal a unique mechanism to realize independent manipulation of reflection with undistorted transmission wavefront in a broad spectrum, which has potential implications in meta-domes and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces.

Abstract:<p>As the 2D counterpart of metamaterials, metasurfaces have drawn wide attentions in recent years due to their unique electromagnetic (EM) properties and subwavelength footprints. Although great efforts have been made in metasurface‐based full vectorial manipulation of EM waves, the realization of multifunctional devices with high compactness is still challenging. Here, by employing the mutual coupling between the meta‐atoms to induce spin‐selective magnetic resonance, a generalized design principle based on single‐layered metasurface is proposed that can achieve giant chiral absorption with average circular dichroism larger than 80%. In addition, arbitrary wavefront manipulation for reflected waves can also be realized with operation efficiency larger than 88%. As a proof of concept, three kinds of chiral devices including beam deflector, vortex beam generator, and meta‐hologram are numerically investigated in infrared region with high performance. It is believed that these multifunctional devices with simple geometry have great potentials in the field of chiral imaging, chiroptical spectroscopy, and EM communication.</p>

Abstract:Metasurfaces endowed with spin-decoupled functionalities offer the capability to meticulously customize the electromagnetic wavefronts of incident dual orthogonal circularly-polarized (CP) waves in a desirable manner, that holds immense potential for broadening their application fields. Nevertheless, a major lack that persists in most spin-decoupled metasurfaces is the limited bandwidth or the intricate design requirements. Herein, we propose a broadband spin-decoupled metasurface, consisted of weak-resonant mirror-symmetry unit structures, that enables independent and distinct wavefront manipulations under the incidence of orthogonal CP waves. As a demonstration, we present a dual-channel metasurface that integrates geometric and propagation phases to generate vortex waves with two distinct modes in a wide frequency range from 10 GHz to 16 GHz. Both simulated and experimental results are consistent and collectively confirm the validity of our proposed metasurface. The research provides a practical and efficient avenue for constructing spin-decoupled metasurface within a broad frequency band.

Abstract:The proposed chiral‐assisted reflective metasurface can simultaneously realize strong spin‐selective absorption and efficient geometric phase modulation for incident spin waves in three frequency bands, where vortex waves with the mode of −2 and 2 can be generated under incidences of right‐handed circularly polarized wave at frequency f2 and left‐handed circularly polarized wave at frequency f1 and f3, respectively. Metasurfaces with spin‐selective reflection or transmission functions for circularly‐polarized (CP) incident waves have aroused researchers' great attention. However, current spin‐selective metasurface designs have yet to mature into a practical method due to the limitations of single operating band or inefficient phase modulation. Herein, a novel chiral meta‐atom is proposed, exhibiting spin‐selective absorption/reflection functions for dual‐orthogonal CP incident waves at three different operating bands. More significantly, the Pancharatnam–Berry phase theory is introduced at all working frequencies to generate a full 2π reflection phase modulation by rotating the chiral resonator, and the three distinct absorption bands remain almost constant with the rotation. Theoretical results indicate that high absorption can separately act on left‐handed or right‐handed CP incident waves at triple bands, and meanwhile, the other incident wave with different handedness is efficiently reflected without changing the handedness. As a proof of concept, two tri‐band meta‐devices with spin‐selective anomalous reflection and spin‐selective orbital angular momentum generating functions are designed and experimentally characterized, both of which exhibit excellent spin‐dependent bi‐functional performances at three different operating bands. The research results provide a promising route to realize spin‐selective meta‐devices with multi‐band operating modes in wireless communication systems and multispectral imaging and information encryption fields.

Abstract:We propose a planar composite chiral metamaterial (CCMM) by symmetrically inserting a metallic mesh between two layers of conjugated gammadion resonators. As the elaborate CCMM operates in the frequency region of off-resonance, it therefore presents loss-less and dispersion-free features. It can achieve flat polarization rotation simultaneously accompanied with high transmission and extremely low ellipticity in a broad bandwidth. In the meanwhile, this intriguing CCMM shows more superiorities in polarization rotation power and operating bandwidth than the pure chiral metamaterial just composed of conjugated gammadions. Due to the fascinating properties, the proposed CCMM is greatly appealing for controlling the polarization state of the electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:Retroreflectors are ubiquitously used in a multitude of applications, such as cloaking, wireless communication, radar, and antenna, owing to their ability to augment the reflected electromagnetic (EM) waves in the incident direction. However, Current metasurface retroreflector designs have yet to mature into a practical method due to the limitations of low efficiency and narrow band, which actually originate from the difficulty in simultaneously engineering phase profiles of certain metasurface at distinct wavelengths. Here, a broadband spin-locked retroreflector with high efficiency that relies only on a simple metasurface layer is demonstrated. The metasurface is designed with low-loss dielectric resonators, introducing both the propagation and geometric phases to enable dispersive phase compensation. The results indicate that the proposed metasurface can achieve retroreflection over a broadband spectrum while keeping the spin state identical. Furthermore, a broadband spin-locked cloak is presented for validation. The work builds up a major advance for practice-oriented retroreflector and even envision this approach may open new vistas in the very cutting-edge research of 6G wireless communication network.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, the phase‐engineered quasi‐2D interfaces, have attracted intensive interest due to their great capabilities in manipulating the reflection, refraction and transmission of electromagnetic waves. Here, we demonstrate the design and realization of a gradient chiral metamirror tailored for spin‐selective anomalous reflection based on the theory of Pancharatnam‐Berry phase. Asymmetric split ring resonators are employed as the basic meta‐atoms for strong circular dichroism. Dispersionless phase discontinuities are achieved by adjusting the orientation of the meta‐atoms, and spin‐dependent absorption is realized by introducing a chiral resonance. Theoretical results predict both broadband beam deflection and spin‐selective absorption for circularly polarized waves in a designer metamirror. Experimental verification of this bifunctional performance is implemented at microwave frequencies and the measured results agree well with the simulation ones. Such chiral metamirrors could pave an avenue towards spin‐selective modulation of the wavefront and might find promising applications in planar electromagnetic devices.

Abstract:Chiral metamirrors can reflect one circularly polarized light without changing its handedness, while almost completely absorb the other, which would have many potential applications in engineering. In this paper, recent progresses of our group on the chiral metamirrors are reviewed. Firstly, we discuss the general method to design the chiral metamirrors under the framework of Jones calculus. The structural requirement of such chiral metamirrors is the breaking in both the n-fold rotational (n ≥ 2) symmetry and mirror symmetry. According to the general design methodology, we propose and design some chiral metamirrors that absorb only one circularly polarized light. Our design includes a bi-layer chiral metamirror in the mid-infrared region, a single-layer chiral metamirror in microwave and a broadband chiral metamirror. Our findings may provide an efficient approach to boost the working bandwidth of the chiral metamirror and a variety of applications, including molecular spectroscopy and polarization-sensitive detector.

Abstract:Optical chiral metamaterials have recently attracted considerable attention because they offer new and exciting opportunities for fundamental research and practical applications. Through pragmatic designs, the chiroptical response of chiral metamaterials can be several orders of magnitude higher than that of natural chiral materials. Meanwhile, the local chiral fields can be enhanced by plasmonic resonances to drive a wide range of physical and chemical processes in both linear and nonlinear regimes. In this review, we will discuss the fundamental principles of chiral metamaterials, various optical chiral metamaterials realized by different nanofabrication approaches, and the applications and future prospects of this emerging field.
Wideband High-Reflection Chiral Dielectric Metasurface

Abstract:Compared to natural materials, artificial subwavelength structures can enhance chiroptical effects in a stronger way, and the requirement of low material loss and wideband operation is desired in many situations. Here, we propose an all-dielectric chiral metasurface as a periodic array of centrosymmetric staggered silicon cuboid pairs to achieve strong circular dichroism in a wide band. As a demonstration, the designed chiral metasurface may strongly reflect the chosen circularly polarized light with the spin preserved in the operating wavelength range of 1.51 ti 1.60 mu m while highly transmit (with an efficiency greater than 95%) the opposite circularly polarized light with the spin flipped. Then, two application cases are given for the designed chiral metasurface. A flat chiral meta-lens is constructed to produce wideband focusing in the transmission/reflection side while the disturbing from the opposite circular polarization is well blocked by high reflection/transmission. A chiral Fabry-Perot cavity is also constructed, which has an extremely high quality factor (2.1E4). The proposed method provides an efficient way to produce strong chiroptical effects and has a promising potential for various applications such as signal processing, sensing, radiation and detection.
Broadband linear polarizer with high-efficient asymmetric transmission using a chiral metasurface

Abstract:Asymmetric transmission, as a peculiar electromagnetic phenomenon in electromagnetic wave transmission, has been attracted extensive attention because of its important applications in polarization control and photodiode. This wok proposes a broadband linear polarizer based on a chiral metasurface with high-efficient asymmetric transmission performance. The designed polarizer consists of double arc-shaped structures interconnected via two circular cavities, which has the capacity to achieve broadband asymmetric transmission effect at 4–15 GHz for linear polarization conversion. The polarization conversion ratio exceeds 90% at 6.8–11.9 GHz and has a relative bandwidth of 54.5%. The asymmetric transmission parameter is above 0.59 in the frequency band 7.4–11.6 GHz. The microwave experiment results show a great consistency between simulation and experiment. The physical mechanism of polarization conversion and asymmetric transmission are further studied by introducing the surface current and electric field distributions. The designed polarizer has the superiority of uncomplicated structure and easy control, and can be extended to terahertz and optical regime. We believe that it has a broad application prospect in the field of chiral metamaterial structure design.

Abstract:Chiral metasurfaces with spin-selective properties have shown an unprecedented ability to modulate optical properties on the subwavelength scale. Alternatively, the simultaneous implementation of broadband tunable chiral response and wavefront manipulation on minimalistically constructed monolayer metasurfaces can lead to a plethora of applications such as optical converter diodes, chiral imaging, and sensing. Benefiting from a localized interference between two pairs of achiral meta -atoms whose optical behavior is similar to that of a half-wave plate (HWP), we theoretically provide a design strategy for constructing meta -molecules for asymmetric transmission (AT) parameters using interference mechanisms, each of which achieves a specific modulation function in the terahertz (THz) band. Localized interference effects with polarization-selective properties permit the incident circular polarization to be transformed into its orthogonal polarization mode. Benefiting from spin-selective transmission, the proposed metasurface simultaneously implements polarization filtering and wavefront manipulation with the assistance of a geometric phase mechanism. Not only that, chiral imaging schemes are also evaluated under such a design mechanism. As a result, this generalized assembly scheme can not only be extended to arbitrary working bands, but also find a variety of applications in photodetectors.

Abstract:In this article, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a single-layered spin-decoupled metasurface and its application to a dual-circularly polarized reflector antenna. A developed method is first analyzed to guide the design of broadband spin-decoupled metasurface. Then, a quasi-I-shaped meta-atom, which exhibits a phase coverage of 2 pi and high cross-polarization conversion efficiency within 12-21 GHz, is accordingly designed to actualize spin-decoupled phase change by simultaneously tuning the structural parameters and self-rotation of the element. To illustrate the independent phase control of orthogonal spins, a dual-circularly polarized multiplexing reflector antenna is designed with offset configuration. The experimentally measured results of the assembled reflector antenna are in good agreement with the simulated ones, showing a peak gain of 29.5 and 29.6 dBic, peak aperture efficiency (AE) of 53% and 54%, 3 dB gain bandwidth (BW) of 13.2-20.2 GHz (41.9%) and 13.4-20.2 GHz (40.5%), and 3 dB axial ratio (AR) BW of 11.8-21 GHz (56.1%) and 11.5-22 GHz (62.7%) for left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) radiations, respectively. The design strategy and the well-performed multiplexing reflector antenna may have promising perspective in many practical applications, for example, satellite communication system and long-distance wireless communication system.
