Abstract:We prove some distribution results for the $k$-fold divisor function in arithmetic progressions to moduli that exceed the square-root of length $X$ of the sum, with appropriate constrains and averaging on the moduli, saving a power of $X$ from the trivial bound. On assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we obtain uniform power saving error terms that are independent of $k$. We follow and specialize Y.T. Zhang's method on bounded gaps between primes to our setting. Our arguments are essentially self-contained, with the exception on the use of Deligne's work on the Riemann Hypothesis for varieties over finite fields. In particular, we avoid the reliance on Siegel's theorem, leading to some effective estimates.

Abstract:A deep conjecture of Montgomery and Soundararajan on the distribution of prime numbers in short intervals of length $h$ says that the third moment is bounded by $\ll h^{\frac {3}{2}-c}$ for some $c>0$. There is in the literature some conditional evidence towards this conjecture whilst in the first article to this series we gave the first instance of unconditional evidence in the form of a bound corresponding to $\ll h^{7/5+o(1)}$. In this article we push the exponent down to $\ll h^{1+o(1)}$ which more or less is expected to be best possible.

Abstract:We investigate lower bounds for the variance in arithmetic progressions of certain multiplicative functions "close" to $1$. Specifically, we consider $\alpha_N$-fold divisor functions, when $\alpha_N$ is a sequence of positive real numbers approaching $1$ in a suitable way or $\alpha_N=1$, and the indicator of $y$-smooth numbers, for suitably large parameters $y$. As a corollary, we will strengthen a previous author's result on the first subject and obtain matching lower bounds to some Barban-Davenport-Halberstam type theorems for $y$-smooth numbers. Incidentally, we will also find a lower bound for the variance in arithmetic progressions of the prime factors counting functions $\omega(n)$ and $\Omega(n)$.

Abstract:We show that for some constant $\beta > 0$, any subset $A$ of integers $\{1,\ldots,N\}$ of size at least $2^{-O((\log N)^\beta)} \cdot N$ contains a non-trivial three-term arithmetic progression. Previously, three-term arithmetic progressions were known to exist only for sets of size at least $N/(\log N)^{1 + c}$ for a constant $c > 0$. Our approach is first to develop new analytic techniques for addressing some related questions in the finite-field setting and then to apply some analogous variants of these same techniques, suitably adapted for the more complicated setting of integers.

Abstract:We use the Petrow-Young [10] subconvexity bound for Dirichlet $L$-functions to show that $d_4(n)$ has exponent of distribution $4/7$ when we allow an average over $a$ mod $q$, thereby giving an equidistribution result for $d_4(n)$ which goes past the $1/2$ barrier for the first time.

Abstract:Let $E_x(q,a)$ be the error term when counting primes in arithmetic progressions and let $M(Q)=\sum_{q\leq Q}\phi(q)\sum_{a=1}^qE_x(q,a)^3$. We show that $M(Q)<<Q^3(x/Q)^{7/5}$ for large $Q$ close to $x$ (in the usual BDH sense) thereby showing that sign changes in the error give power saving cancellation past the expected $\sqrt {x/q}$ heuristic.

Abstract:We prove that the primes below $x$ are, on average, equidistributed in arithmetic progressions to smooth moduli of size up to $x^{1/2+1/40-\epsilon}$. The exponent of distribution $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{1}{40}$ improves on a result of Polymath, who had previously obtained the exponent $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{7}{300}$. As a consequence, we improve results on intervals of bounded length which contain many primes, showing that $\liminf_{n \rightarrow \infty} (p_{n+m}-p_n) = O(\exp(3.8075 m))$. The main new ingredient of our proof is a modification of the q-van der Corput process. It allows us to exploit additional averaging for the exponential sums which appear in the Type I estimates of Polymath.

Abstract:Let $r_5(N)$ be the largest cardinality of a set in $\{1,\ldots,N\}$ which does not contain $5$ elements in arithmetic progression. Then there exists a constant $c\in (0,1)$ such that \[r_5(N)\ll \frac{N}{\exp((\log\log N)^{c})}.\] Our work is a consequence of recent improved bounds on the $U^4$-inverse theorem of the first author and the fact that $3$-step nilsequences may be approximated by locally cubic functions on shifted Bohr sets. This combined with the density increment strategy of Heath-Brown and Szemer{é}di, codified by Green and Tao, gives the desired result.

Abstract:We consider a method for estimating asymptotics of arithmetic functions on a arithmetic progression in the paper. This question is closely related with the distribution of primes. Problems often arise even with the definition of asymptotic of the mean value of arithmetic functions, and even more with the determination of asymptotics of moments of higher orders. Therefore, the paper proposes (a different from the traditional) probabilistic approach based on the limiting distribution of arithmetic functions on an arithmetic progression. We consider arithmetic functions with limiting normal distribution. Several assertions are proved about the estimation of asymptotics of moments of strongly additive arithmetic functions on a arithmetic progression, as well as additive functions of the class and arithmetic functions of the class having the same limit distribution. Versions 1 and 2 consider the asymptotics of the moments of arithmetic functions with normal limit distribution in natural series.

Ergodic averages for sparse sequences along primes

Abstract:We investigate the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages along sparse sequences evaluated at prime numbers. Our sequences arise from smooth and well-behaved functions that have polynomial growth. Central to this topic is a comparison result between standard Cesáro averages along positive integers and averages weighted by the (modified) von Mangoldt function. The main ingredients are a recent result of Matomäki, Shao, Tao and Teräväinen on the Gowers uniformity of the latter function in short intervals, a lifting argument that allows one to pass from actions of integers to flows, a simultaneous (variable) polynomial approximation in appropriate short intervals, and some quantitative equidistribution results for the former polynomials. We derive numerous applications in multiple recurrence, additive combinatorics, and equidistribution in nilmanifolds along primes. In particular, we deduce that any set of positive density contains arithmetic progressions with step $\lfloor p^c \rfloor$, where $c$ is a positive non-integer and $p$ denotes a prime, establishing a conjecture of Frantzikinakis.

Abstract:For a prime $p$, a restricted arithmetic progression in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ is a triplet of vectors $x, x+a, x+2a$ in which the common difference $a$ is a non-zero element from $\{0,1,2\}^n$. What is the size of the largest $A\subseteq \mathbb{F}_p^n$ that is free of restricted arithmetic progressions? We show that the density of any such set is at most $\frac{C}{(\log\log\log n)^c}$, where $c,C>0$ depend only on $p$, giving the first reasonable bounds for the density of such sets. Previously, the best known bound was $O(1/\log^{*} n)$, which follows from the density Hales-Jewett theorem.

Abstract:We show the primes have level of distribution $66/107\approx 0.617$ using triply well-factorable weights. This gives the highest level of distribution for primes in any setting, improving on the prior record level $3/5=0.60$ of Maynard. We also extend this level to $5/8=0.625$, assuming Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. As applications of the method, we obtain new upper bounds for twin primes and for Goldbach representations of even numbers $a$. For the Goldbach problem, this is the first use of a level of distribution beyond the square-root barrier, and leads to the greatest improvement on the problem since Bombieri-Davenport from 1966. Our proof optimizes the Deshouillers-Iwaniec spectral large sieve estimates, both in the exceptional spectrum and uniformity in the residue $a$, refining Drappeau-Pratt-Radziwill and Assing-Blomer-Li.
