Abstract:A CuO/Mn2O3 heterojunction catalyst is successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal and calcination method, which exhibits a unique spindle-like morphology with rough surface that can expose more active sites. Moreover, the formation of heterogeneous interface accelerates the interfacial electron transfer, and optimizes the desorption and hydrogenation process of CuO/Mn2O3 to intermediates, significantly enhancing NO3RR activity. Thus, CuO/Mn2O3 exhibits a high NH3 Faraday efficiency of 98.44%, and a high NH3 yield of 12990.49 μg h-1 · cm-2 at -0.7 V vs. RHE in alkaline medium.

Abstract:The artificial ammonia synthesis via electrochemical nitrate reduction has met increasing research interest, but it is still necessary to develop advanced catalysts with high nitrate-to-ammonia capability. Herein, we propose and demonstrate a one-step method to construct binder-free Cu foam-supported oxygen vacancy-rich Cu/CuOx in-plane heterostructured nanosheet arrays (Cu/CuOx/CF). In addition to exposing ample active sites, the two-dimensional nanosheet morphology greatly facilitates the mass/charge-transfer process during electrocatalysis. Besides, the in-plane heterojunctions and rich oxygen vacancies induced synergistic effect can modulate the electronic structure of active sites and thus tune the adsorption properties of the reactant intermediates and inhibit the formation of undesirable byproducts, which is conducive to the further improvement of nitrate reduction activity. As a result, these advantages endow the Cu/CuOx/CF with superior performance for ammonia synthesis via nitrate electroreduction, achieving high ammonia selectivity (95.00%) and Faradaic efficiency (93.58%).

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of nitrate can be a promising and sustainable alternative for the industrially used, energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process strategy at mild conditions and also solve the issue of nitrate nitrogen pollution in water. We present here the facile construction of N-doped CuO@Co3O4/NF nanoarray on nickel foam for highly efficient NH3 electrosynthesis via selective NO3- reduction at neutral electrolyte. At -0.85 V (versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, vs. RHE), this N doped CuO@Co3O4/NF obtained an outstanding Faraday efficiency (FE) of 99.78% and the NH3 yield of up to 31.92 mg h-1 cm-2 when operated in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution with additional 50 mM NaNO3. And its excellent electrochemical performance could remain at least 12 hours. Furthermore, according to the characterization, the enhanced electrocatalytic performance should be attributable to the synergistic effect of N-dopant, a relatively large amounts of Co(II) and oxygen vacancies (OVs) in this heterostructure, leading to the suppression of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the improvement of electron/mass transfer at this N-doped CuO@Co3O4/NF heterostructure.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic NO3- reduction reaction (NO3RR) to NH3 provides a promising pathway for ambient NH3 synthesis and environmental pollution treatment. Cu and its oxides are recognized as effective NO3RR electrocatalysts due to their favorable d-orbital energy levels and superior kinetics. In this work, mixed-valence Cu-based catalysts with tunable valence states were constructed via an inorganic salt-induced MOF-derived strategy. Notably, optimized Cu-CuxO/C-0.3 featured a Cu/Cu2O heterostructure and demonstrated the lowest Cu valence state. The resulting Cu/Cu2O heterointerface facilitated electron transfer and increased the density of electrochemically active sites, leading to an enhanced faradaic efficiency of 81.4% and a remarkable yield rate of 13.38 mg h-1 cm-2 (ca. 2.39 mol h-1 gcat.-1) at -0.8 V vs. RHE. This work presents insights for designing multi-phase heterostructured NO3RR catalysts and emphasizes their potential significance in efficient ammonia production.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia emerges as an attractive and promising technology for nitrate removal from water and simultaneous ammonia electrosynthesis, which demands electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity. Herein, we designed CuO@MnO 2 1D core–2D shell hierarchical nanoarrays supported on a copper foam substrate (CuO@MnO 2 /CF) for electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia conversion. The decoration of CuO 1D nanowire arrays with MnO 2 2D nanosheets brings about abundant exposed active sites and facilitates mass transfer. More importantly, the CuO/MnO 2 heterogeneous nanointerface affords a well-designed built-in electric field in the interface region, which could trigger interfacial accumulation of nitrate ions and accelerate nitrate electroreduction kinetics by optimizing the chemisorption of nitrate ions or/and reaction intermediates. With these properties, an impressive electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia capability was achieve over CuO@MnO 2 /CF (nitrate conversion: 99.38%, ammonia faradaic efficiency: 94.92%, and ammonia selectivity: 96.67%). This study opens new avenues for the rational construction of efficient electrocatalysts for nitrate removal and ammonia electrosynthesis.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of nitrate is a highly promising method for removing nitrate from water bodies. However, slow reaction rates have been a major challenge in its practical application. In this study, a novel CuO/Cu2O@CC hetero-electrode was developed by using a precise redox strategy, where CuO and Cu2O were simultaneously introduced to provide catalytic active sites for the reduction of nitrate into ammonia. This compositing design could significantly enlarge the electrochemically active surface area, reduce the electron transfer resistance and increase hydroxyl oxygen content on the electrode surface. The effect of operating parameters (cathodic potential, initial pH, supporting electrolyte concentration, initial NO 3 – − N concentration and coexisting Cl – concentration) on nitrate reduction was studied to optimize the reduction efficiency. Under −1.4 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) cathodic potentials and initial pH = 7 parameters, CuO/Cu2O@CC 3 achieved a remarkable 92.9% removal of 100 mg L – 1 initial nitrate and a high ammonia selectivity of 78.33% in 1 h using 0.5 mol L – 1 K2SO4 as supporting electrolyte, with a pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of 2.5856 h – 1 . Additionally, based on the experimental results, a reaction mechanism for the heterostructures electrode was proposed. The successful construction of CuO/Cu2O hetero-electrode provides a unique insight into the electrochemical reduction of nitrate.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate ( ) reduction to ammonia (NH 3 ) offers a viable approach for sustainable NH 3 production and environmental denitrification. Copper (Cu) possesses a distinctive electronic structure, which can augment the reaction kinetics of and impede hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), rendering it a promising contender for the electrosynthesis of NH 3 from . Nevertheless, the role of Cu 2 O in copper-based catalysts still requires further investigation for a more comprehensive understanding. Herein, the Cu 2 O/Cu(OH) 2 heterostructures are successfully fabricated through liquid laser irradiation using CuO nanoparticles as a precursor. Experimental and theoretical researches reveal that Cu 2 O/Cu(OH) 2 heterostructure exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance for to NH 3 because Cu(OH) 2 promotes electron transfer and reduces the valence state of Cu active site in Cu 2 O. At −0.6 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), the NH 3 yield reaches its maximum at 1630.66 ± 29.72 , while the maximum of Faraday efficiency (FE) is 76.95% ± 5.51%. This study expands the technical scope of copper-based catalyst preparation and enhances the understanding of the electrocatalytic mechanism of to NH 3 .

Abstract:Achieving high efficiency in nitrate (NO3–) to ammonia (NH3) electrocatalysis requires the exploration of advanced electrocatalysts with a well-designed composition and architecture. In this work, a facile one-step hydrothermal approach was developed for the construction of novel Cu/oxygen vacancy-rich Cu-Mn3O4 heterostructured ultrathin nanosheet arrays on Cu foam (Cu/Cu-Mn3O4 NSAs/CF). Two-dimensional ultrathin nanosheet arrays could increase the exposure of catalytically active centers, and the heterogeneous nanointerface and oxygen vacancies synergistically improve the nitrate-to-ammonia activity over the active centers. Surface Structure Reformulation from CuO to Cu/Cu(OH)2 for Highly Efficient Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of nitrate (NO3 -) to ammonia (NH3) is a potential way to produce green NH3 and remediate the nitrogen cycle. In this paper, an efficient catalyst of spherical CuO made by stacking small particles with oxygen-rich vacancies is reported. The NH3 yield and Faraday efficiency are 15.53 mg h-1 mgcat -1 and 90.69%, respectively, in a neutral electrolyte at a voltage of -0.80 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). The high activity of the electrodes results from changes in the phase and structure during electrochemical reduction. Structurally, there is a shift from a spherical structure with dense accumulation of small particles to a layered network structure with uniform distribution of small particles stacked on top of each other, thus exposing more active sites. Furthermore, in terms of phase, the electrode transitions from CuO to Cu/Cu(OH)2. Density functional theory calculations showed that Cu(OH)2 formation enhances NO3- adsorption. Meanwhile, the Cu(OH)2 can inhibit the competing hydrogen evolution reaction, while the formation of Cu (111) crystal surfaces facilitates the hydrogenation reaction. The synergistic effect between the two promotes the NO3- to NH3. Therefore, this study provides a new idea and direction for Cu-based oxides in electrocatalytic NH3 production.
A Cu/Fe3O4@CN tandem catalyst for efficient ammonia electrosynthesis from nitrate reduction

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (ENO3RR) is a green technology for value-added ammonia production meanwhile treating waste water at ambient conditions. However, it remains a great challenge to construct efficient catalysts due to the complex multiple proton and electron transfer process. Herein, we report a tandem catalyst Cu/Fe3O4@CN composed of N-doped carbon layer coated Cu/Fe3O4 heterostructure toward highly efficient electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia production in alkaline medium. The catalyst can achieve an ammonia Faradaic efficiency and ammonia yield rate as high as 96.57 % and 22104.15 μg h-1 mgcat-1 at the optimal potential of -0.9 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M KOH. The outstanding ENO3RR performance outperforms the most of reported transitional metal-based ENO3RR electrocatalysts. More importantly, Cu/Fe3O4@CN also exhibits excellent stability even under large current density of 200 mA cm-2, and long-time durability for continuous electrolysis for 36 h. The experimental and theoretical calculations verify the tandem catalysis mechanism of NO3- → NO2- → NH3 through the synergism of the two components Cu and Fe3O4 in Cu/Fe3O4@CN. Specifically, Cu has strong NO3- adsorption capacity which can be reduced into NO2-, while Fe3O4 can boost water dissociation to generate abundant active *H, ensuring the smooth hydrogenation process while suppressing the occurrence of competitive hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). The heterostructure formation between Cu and Fe3O4 also significantly reduces the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (*NO → *NOH), which results in the high performance of Cu/Fe3O4@CN.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) is a promising means for generating the energy carrier ammonia. Herein, we report the synthesis of heterostructure copper-nickel phosphide electrocatalysts via a simple vapor-phase hydrothermal method. The resultant catalysts were evaluated for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (NH 3 ) in three-type electrochemical reactors. In detail, the regulation mechanism of the heterogeneous Cu 3 P−Ni 2 P/CP− x for NO 3 RR performance was systematically studied through the H-type cell, rotating disk electrode setup, and membrane-electrode-assemblies (MEA) electrolyzer. As a result, the Cu 3 P−Ni 2 P/CP−0.5 displays the practicability in an MEA system with an anion exchange membrane, affording the largest ammonia yield rate ( R NH3 ) of 1.9 mmol·h −1 ·cm −2 , exceeding most of the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction electrocatalysts reported to date. The theoretical calculations and in-situ spectroscopy characterizations uncover that the formed heterointerface in Cu 3 P−Ni 2 P/CP is beneficial for promoting nitrate adsorption, activation, and conversion to ammonia through the successive hydrodeoxygenation pathway.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO3−) to ammonia (NH3) reaction has emerged as an attractive approach for selectively reducing NO3− to highly value-added NH3 and removing NO3− pollutants simultaneously. In this work, heterostructured Co/Co3O4 anchored on N-doped carbon nanotubes was prepared and applied for NO3− reduction towards NH3 in alkaline conditions. The catalyst achieves an outstanding performance with up to 67% NH3 Faradaic efficiency at -1.2 V vs. Hg/HgO and 8.319 mg h-1 mgcat-1 yield at -1.7 V vs. Hg/HgO. In addition, it also displays good long-term stability. 15N isotopic labelling experiments prove that the yielded NH3 is derived from NO3− species. In-situ electrochemical Raman spectra revealed that the structure of as-prepared catalyst showed outstanding stability and identified the possible intermediates during electrocatalytic NO3− reduction reaction (NO3RR).

Abstract:The meticulous design of heterogeneous interfaces presents a promising approach for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of Cu-based materials in nitrate reduction reactions. Herein, we developed a self-templated metal–organic frameworks transformation strategy to synthesize hollow multi-metallic oxide materials with well-defined interfaces. By utilizing novel hollow Cu–Co bimetallic Prussian blue analogs as precursors, a hollow cage composed of ultra-small CuO/Co 3 O 4 hetero-nanograins was successfully constructed. It was discovered that this structure greatly enhanced the electrocatalytic activity for the conversion of NO 3 − to NH 3 , achieving a remarkably high Faradaic efficiency (FE) for NH 3 (with a maximum FE of 90.68%) at low overpotential ranges. Furthermore, electrochemical experiments and in situ spectroscopy provided evidence that electrochemically induced reconstruction led to the formation of synergistic sites between Cu and Co 3 O 4 . This enabled the sequential reduction of nitrate and nitrite on adjacent metal/metal oxide phases, resulting in the rapid generation of NH 3 .

Abstract:In the beginning, 1D chain MOF-ZX1 and 2D layer MOF-ZX2 are assembled from Cu(NO3)2·3H2O with 1,4-bis(imidazole-1-yl)benzene (bib) and isophthalic acid (H2ipa), respectively. Then we ingeniously perceive a 1D/2D intercalated network MOF-ZX3 by one-pot reaction of Cu(NO3)2·3H2O with bib and H2ipa. Following, Cu2O@C and CuO@C are synthesized from fast microwave-assistant pyrolysis of MOF-ZX1 and MOF-ZX2 precursors, respectively. Interestingly, MOF-ZX3 is a mixed-valence copper metal-organic framework, and it is liable to derive a Cu2O/CuO@C heterojunction. Significantly, we use such CuxO@C composites as catalysts for electrochemical NO3 − reduction to NH3 (NRA). CuO@C shows the NO3 − conversion rate of 31.84%, Faradaic efficiency of 68.83% and selectivity of 44.18%, while the NRA performance of Cu2O@C is promoted in some extends. For Cu2O/CuO@C, abundant interfacial areas and exposed active sites not only enhance electron transfer, but speed up reaction kinetics. Ultimately, Cu2O/CuO@C gives the best activity of NRA, including three outstanding indices: conversion rate (83.40%), Faradaic efficiency (93.05%) and selectivity (93.11%). Density functional theory calculations disclose Cu2O/CuO can tune d-band centers of active Cu sites, and thus favorably achieves fast conversion from NO3 − to NH3. This work provides a novel idea to rationally design advanced electrocatalysts, and also fundamental investigation on heterojunction catalysts in NRA.

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3 -RR) is a novel green method for ammonia synthesis. The development of outstanding NO3 -RR performance is based on reasonable catalyst. Metal oxides have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional electrical conductivity and catalytic properties. Doping serves as an effective strategy for enhancing catalyst performance due to its ability to change the electron cloud distribution and energy levels. In this study, we develop a heterojunction catalyst Fe doped copper oxide nanosheet and cobalt tetroxide nanowire growing on carbon cloth simultaneously (Fe-CuO@Co3O4/CC) via hydrothermal method. The well-designed Fe-CuO@Co3O4/CC has excellent NH3 yield (470.9 μmol h-1 cm-2) and Faraday efficiency (FE: 84.4 %) at -1.2 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE). The heterostructure increases the specific surface area of the catalyst, and the possibility of contact between the catalyst and NO3 - ions, enhances the catalytic efficiency. In addition, the catalyst has excellent stability and can stably carry out the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3 -RR), which provides a way for further research on the high-efficiency reduction of nitrate.
Three-dimensional Cu3P/Cu Heterostructure As Robust Tandem Electrocatalyst for Selective Electroreduction of Nitrate to Ammonia

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia (NH3) provides an attractive approach to accomplish resource utilization of pollutants, while exploring efficient catalysts with high catalytic activity and NH3 FE at low applied potentials remains great challenging. Herein, we constructed a three-dimensional Cu3P/Cu catalyst and studied its catalytic performances in electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction. The Cu3P/Cu catalyst with finely balanced metallic Cu and Cu3P sites exhibits a high NH3 yield of 4.27 mg h−1cm−2 after 1 h reaction at a low applied potential (-0.05 V vs RHE), outperforming most of previously reported Cu-based catalysts. DFT calculations demonstrate the favored reduction of nitrate to nitrite on metallic Cu and hydrogenation of nitrite to NH3 on Cu3P. This study opens up new opportunities for the application of Cu3P/Cu catalyst as a robust tandem electrocatalyst in the large-scale production of NH3 through electrochemical reduction with low energy consumption.
Dynamically Restructuring Nanoporous Cu-Co Electrocatalyst for Efficient Nitrate Electroreduction to Ammonia

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrate (NO3-) reduction reaction (NITRR) to ammonia (NH3) offers an environmentally friendly alternative for NH3 synthesis but suffers from limited NH3 yield and low Faradaic efficiency (FE) due to the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogenation process. Herein, nanoporous Cu/CoOOH heterostructure is reported as an efficient electrocatalyst for NITRR. The catalyst achieves a high NH3 yield rate of 275.9 mu mol h(-1) cm(-2) (689.8 mmol h(-1) g(cat)(-1)) and 836.8 mu mol h(-1) cm(-2) (2092.0 mmol h(-1) g(cat)(-1)), with corresponding FE values of 85.3 and 91.5% in 200 and 1400 ppm of NO3--N electrolyte, respectively. In situ Raman spectra reveal that the Cu/CoOOH heterostructure is derived from synergistic chemical/electrochemical redox reaction between NO3- and the CuCo alloy during the NITRR process. Theoretical simulations indicate that Cu/CoOOH exhibits enhanced *NO2 affinity and reduces the energy barrier in the rate-determining *NO2H formation step, effectively facilitating NO3- reduction to NH3.
