Abstract:We derive a closed-form result for the leading thermal contributions which appear in the n-dimensional phi3 theory at high temperature. These contributions become local only in the long wavelength and in the static limits, being given by different expressions in these two limits.

It is a function of the metric, independent of time derivatives. It is compared and contrasted with the static limit, and with the corresponding limits in an external Yang-Mills field.

Abstract:In this review, we present the key aspects of modern thermal perturbation theory based on the hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation, including its theoretical foundations and applications within quantum electrodynamics (QED) and quantum chromodynamics (QCD) plasmas. To maintain conciseness, we focus on scenarios in thermal equilibrium, examining a variety of physical quantities and settings. Specifically, we explore both bulk thermodynamic properties and real-time observables in high-temperature domains relevant to heavy-ion physics.

Abstract:Starting from tree and one-loop tachyon amplitudes of open string theory in the presence of a constant B-field, we explore two problems. First we show that in the noncommutative field theory limit the amplitudes reduce to tree and one-loop diagrams of the noncommutative phi-three theory. Next, we check factorization of the one-loop amplitudes in the long cylinder limit.

Abstract:Van Hove's theory of singularities tells us that for three-dimensional lattices the phonon frequency distribution function has square-root singularities and hence is continuous. Using this fact and Weierstrass's theorem, we extend Debye's theory of specific heats of three-dimensional solids to arbitrary phonon frequency spectra. It is found that in the low-temperature limit both the specific heat and thermal expansion coefficient exhibit the T-3 law and the Gruneisen's law is valid. In the high-temperature limit, the thermal expansion coefficient approaches a volume-dependent constant and Gruneisen's law is valid. At intermediate temperatures Gruneisen's law is invalid.

Abstract:AbstractWe compute the two-loop hard-thermal-loop (HTL) resummed thermodynamic potential for$$ \mathcal{N} $$N= 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM). Our final result is manifestly gauge-invariant and was renormalized using only simple vacuum energy, gluon mass, scalar mass, and quark mass counter terms. The HTL mass parametersmD,MD, andmqare then determined self-consistently using a variational prescription which results in a set of coupled gap equations. Based on this, we obtain the two-loop HTL-resummed thermodynamic functions of$$ \mathcal{N} $$N= 4 SYM. We compare our final result with known results obtained in the weak- and strong-coupling limits. We also compare to previously obtained approximately self-consistent HTL resummations and Padé approximants. We find that the two-loop HTL resummed results for the scaled entropy density is a quantitatively reliable approximation to the scaled entropy density for 0 ≤ λ ≲ 2 and is in agreement with previous approximately self-consistent HTL resummation results for λ ≲ 6.

Abstract:We use variational perturbation theory to calculate various universal amplitude ratios above and below Tc in minimally subtracted straight phi4 theory with N components in three dimensions. In order to best exhibit the method as a powerful alternative to Borel resummation techniques, we consider only two- and three-loops expressions where our results are analytic expressions. For the critical exponents, we also extend existing analytic expressions for two loops to three loops.

Abstract:We extend to a general class of covariant gauges an approach which relates the thermal Green functions to forward scattering amplitudes of thermal particles. A brief discussion of the non-transversality of the thermal gluon polarization tensor is given in this context. This method is then applied to the calculation of the ln(T) contributions associated with general configurations of 2 and 3-point gluon functions. The results are Lorentz covariant and have the same structure as the ultraviolet divergent contributions which occur at zero temperature.

Abstract:We analyze the reorganization of free field theory correlators to closed string amplitudes investigated in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0308184" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0308184">hep-th/0308184</a> <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0402063" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0402063">hep-th/0402063</a> <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0409233" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0409233">hep-th/0409233</a> <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0504229" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0504229">hep-th/0504229</a> in the case of Euclidean thermal field theory and study how the dual bulk geometry is encoded on them. The expectation value of Polyakov loop, which is an order parameter for confinement-deconfinement transition, is directly reflected on the dual bulk geometry. The dual geometry of confined phase is found to be AdS space periodically identified in Euclidean time direction. The gluing of Schwinger parameters, which is a key step for the reorganization of field theory correlators, works in the same way as in the non-thermal case. In deconfined phase the gluing is made possible only by taking the dual geometry correctly. The dual geometry for deconfined phase does not have a non-contractible circle in the Euclidean time direction.

Abstract:We calculate in a general background gauge, to one-loop order, the leading logarithmic contribution from the graviton self-energy at finite temperature $T$, extending a previous analysis done at $T=0$. The result, which has a transverse structure, is applied to evaluate the leading quantum correction of the gravitational vacuum polarization to the Newtonian potential. An analytic expression valid at all temperatures is obtained, which generalizes the result obtained earlier at $T=0$. One finds that the magnitude of this quantum correction decreases as the temperature rises.

The Three-Point Form Factor of $\textrm{Tr}\,ϕ^3$ to Six Loops

Abstract:We study the three-point form factor of the length-three half-BPS operator ($\textrm{Tr}\,\phi^3$) in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory, using analyticity and integrability methods. We find that the functions describing the form factor in perturbation theory live in the same restrictive space of multiple polylogarithms as the one describing the form factor of the stress-tensor operator ($\textrm{Tr}\,\phi^2$). Furthermore, we find that the leading-order data in the collinear limit provided by the form factor operator product expansion (FFOPE) is enough to fix the form factor uniquely, at least through six loops. We perform various tests of our results using the subleading FFOPE corrections. We also analyze the form factor in the Regge limit where two Mandelstam invariants are large; we obtain a compact representation for the form factor in this limit which is valid to all orders in the coupling.

Abstract:We calculate the effective mass and damping rate in φ3 6 theory at finite temperature by evaluating the real and imaginary parts of the one-loop self energies at the hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation. We show that there is thermal instability above a critical temperature Tc. The effective mass and damping rate are proportional to √gT and gT respectively. We compare our results with those in hot QCD.
Thermal One-point Functions and Their Partial Wave Decomposition

Abstract:In this work we address partial wave decompositions of thermal one-point functions in conformal field theories on $S^1 \times S^{d-1}$. With the help of Casimir differential equations we develop efficient algorithms to compute the relevant conformal blocks for an external field of arbitrary spin and with any spin exchange along the thermal circle, at least in three dimensions. This is achieved by identifying solutions to the Casimir equations with a special class of spherical functions in the harmonic analysis of the conformal group. The resulting blocks are then applied to study the decomposition of one-point functions of the scalar $\phi^2$ and the stress tensor $T$ for a three-dimensional free scalar field $\phi$. We are able to read off averaged OPE coefficients into exchanged fields of high weight and spin for a complete set of tensor structures. We also extract an asymptotic behaviour of conformal blocks and use it to analyse the density of heavy-heavy-light OPE coefficients for spinning operators, comparing it with semi-classical predictions, such as the dimensions of operators at large charge.

Non-perturbative constraints on perturbation theory at finite temperature

Abstract:It has long been understood that the inclusion of temperature in the perturbative treatment of quantum field theories leads to complications that are not present at zero temperature. In these proceedings we report on the non-perturbative obstructions that arise, and how these lead to deviations in the predictions of lattice scalar correlation functions in massive $\phi^{4}$ theory. Using the known non-perturbative spectral constraints satisfied by finite-temperature correlation functions we outline why the presence of distinct particle-like excitations could provide a resolution to these issues.

Analytic evaluation of the three-loop three-point form factor of $\operatorname{tr}ϕ^3$ in $\mathcal{N}=4$ sYM

Abstract:We compute analytically the three-loop correlation function of the local operator $\text{tr} \, \phi^3$ inserted into three on-shell states, in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The result is expressed in terms of Chen iterated integrals. We also present our result using generalised polylogarithms, and evaluate them numerically, finding agreement with a previous numerical result in the literature. We observe that the result depends on fewer kinematic singularities compared to individual Feynman integrals. Furthermore, upon choosing a suitable definition of the finite part, we find that the latter satisfies powerful symbol adjacency relations similar to those previously observed for the $\text{tr} \, \phi^2$ case.

Abstract:We investigate the use of the hard thermal loop (HTL) resummation techniquein non-equilibrium field theory. We use the Keldysh representation of the realtime formalism (RTF). We derive the HTL photon self energy and the resummedphoton propagator. We show that no pinch singularities appear in thenon-equilibrium HTL effective propagator. We discuss a possible regularizationmechanism for these singularities at higher orders. As an example of theapplication of the HTL resummation method within the RTF we discuss the dampingrate of a hard electron.
Nonequilibrium Temperature and Thermometry in Heat-Conducting Phi-4 Models

Abstract:We analyze temperature and thermometry for simple nonequilibrium heat-conducting models. We show in detail, for both two- and three-dimensional systems, that the ideal gas thermometer corresponds to the concept of a local instantaneous mechanical kinetic temperature. For the Phi-4 models investigated here the mechanical temperature closely approximates the local thermodynamic equilibrium temperature. There is a significant difference between kinetic temperature and the nonlocal configurational temperature. Neither obeys the predictions of extended irreversible thermodynamics. Overall, we find that kinetic temperature, as modeled and imposed by the Nosé-Hoover thermostats developed in 1984, provides the simplest means for simulating, analyzing, and understanding nonequilibrium heat flows.
