Abstract:In this paper we provide a unified approach to a family of integrals of Mellin--Barnes type using distribution theory and Fourier transforms. Interesting features arise in many of the cases which call for the application of pull-backs of distributions via smooth submersive maps defined by Hörmander. We derive by this method the integrals of Hecke and Sonine relating to various types of Bessel functions which have found applications in analytic and algebraic number theory.

Abstract:Open string disk integrals are represented as contour integrals of a product of Beta functions using Mellin transformations. This makes the mathematical problem of computing the α′-expansion around the field-theory limit similar to that of the ϵ-expansion in Feynman loop integrals around the four-dimensional limit. More explicitly, the formula in Mellin space obtained directly from the standard Koba–Nielsen-like representation is valid in a region of values of α′ that does not include α′=0. Analytic continuation is therefore needed since contours are pinched by poles as α′→0. Deforming contours that get pinched by poles generates a set of (n−3)! multi-dimensional residues left behind which contain all the field theory information. Some analogies between the field theory formulas obtained by this method and those derived recently from using the scattering equations are commented at the end.

Abstract:We present a method to calculate the $x$--space expressions of massless or massive operator matrix elements in QCD and QED containing local composite operator insertions, depending on the discrete Mellin index $N$, directly, without computing the Mellin--space expressions in explicit form analytically. Here $N$ belongs either to the even or odd positive integers. The method is based on the resummation of the operators into effective propagators and relies on an analytic continuation between two continuous variables. We apply it to iterated integrals as well as to the more general case of iterated non--iterative integrals, generalizing the former ones. The $x$--space expressions are needed to derive the small--$x$ behaviour of the respective quantities, which usually cannot be accessed in $N$--space. We illustrate the method for different (iterated) alphabets, including non--iterative $_2F_1$ and elliptic structures, as examples. These structures occur in different massless and massive three--loop calculations. Likewise the method applies even to the analytic closed form solutions of more general cases of differential equations which do not factorize into first--order factors.

Abstract:We present a summation rule using the Mellin transform to give short proofs of some important classical relations between special functions and Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. For example, the values of the Hurwitz zeta function at the negative integers are expressed in terms of Bernoulli polynomials. We also show identities involving exponential and Hermite polynomials.

Abstract:We introduce a Mellin transform of functions which live on all of $\bR$ and discuss its applications to the limiting theory of Bellman-Harris processes, and specifically Luria-Delbrück processes. More precisely, we calculate the life-time distribution of particles in a Bellman-Harris process from their first-generation offspring and limiting distributions, and prove a formula for the Laplace transform of the distribution of types in a Luria-Delbrück process in the Mittag-Leffler limit. As a by-product, we show how to easily derive the (classical) Mellin transforms of certain stable probability distributions from their Fourier transform.

Abstract:In this paper a notion of functional "distance" in the Mellin transform setting is introduced and a general representation formula is obtained for it. Also, a determination of the distance is given in terms of Lipschitz classes and Mellin-Sobolev spaces. Abstract:We introduce formulas for the logarithms of Drinfeld modules using a framework recently developed by the second author. We write the logarithm function as the evaluation under a motivic map of a product of rigid analytic trivializations of $t$-motives. We then specialize our formulas to express special values of Goss $L$-functions as Drinfeld periods multiplied by rigid analytic trivializations evaluated under this motivic map. We view these formulas as characteristic-$p$ analogues of integral representations of Hasse-Weil type zeta functions. We also apply this machinery for Drinfeld modules tensored with the tensor powers of the Carlitz module, which serves as the Tate twist of a Drinfeld module.

On the compactness of the bi-commutator

Abstract:We prove compactness results and characterizations for the bi-commutator $[T_1,[b, T_2]]$ of a symbol $b$ and two non-degenerate Calderón-Zygmund singular integral operators $T_1, T_2$. Our strategy for proving sufficient conditions for compactness is to first establish them in the mixed-norm $L^{p_1}L^{p_2}\to L^{q_1}L^{q_2}$ off-diagonal case with $p_i < q_i$, and then extend these to other exponents, including the diagonal $p_i = q_i$, with a new extrapolation argument. In particular, the natural product $\operatorname{VMO}$ condition is obtained as a sufficient condition in the diagonal. A full characterization is obtained, both in terms of a vanishing mean oscillation type condition and in terms of the approximability of the symbol, whenever the inequality $p_i \le q_i$ is strict for at least one index. The extrapolation scheme for proving sufficiency requires us to prove new approximation results in relevant bi-parameter function spaces that are of independent interest. The necessity results are obtained by carefully combining recent rectangular approximate weak factorization methods with a classical idea of Uchiyama.

Abstract:We considered the Mellin transform assigned to the convolution wave kernel associated to the Laplace-Beltrami operator on higher rank Riemannian symmetric spaces of the non-compact type. The occurrence of the analyticity strip of this transform can be deduced directly from the pointwise kernel estimates. Using the zeta function techniques, we established its meromorphic extension to the entire complex plane $ {{\Bbb C}} $ with simple poles on the real line.

Abstract:In the setting of the multidimensional Mellin analysis we introduce moduli of continuity and use them to define Besov-Mellin spaces. We prove that Besov-Mellin spaces are the interpolation spaces (in the sense of J.Peetre) between two Sobolev-Mellin spaces. We also introduce Bernstein-Mellin spaces and prove corresponding direct and inverse approximation theorems. In the Hilbert case we discuss Laplace-Mellin operaor and define relevant Paley-Wiener-Mellin spaces. Also in the Hilbert case we describe Besov-Mellin spaces in terms of Hilbert frames.

Abstract:We consider integrals that generalize both the Mellin transforms of rational functions of the form 1/f and the classical Euler integrals. The domains of integration of our so-called Euler--Mellin integrals are naturally related to the coamoeba of f, and the components of the complement of the closure of the coamoeba give rise to a family of these integrals. After performing an explicit meromorphic continuation of Euler--Mellin integrals, we interpret them as A-hypergeometric functions and discuss their linear independence and relation to Mellin--Barnes integrals.

Abstract:We are interested in the singular behaviour at the origin of solutions to the equation $\mathscr{H} \rho = e$ on a half-axis, where $\mathscr H$ is the one-sided Hilbert transform, $\rho$ an unknown solution and $e$ a known function. This is a simpler model problem on the path to understanding wave field singularities caused by curve-shaped scatterers in a planar domain. We prove that $\rho$ has a singularity of the form $\mathscr M[e](1/2) / \sqrt{t}$ where $\mathscr M$ is the Mellin transform. To do this we use specially built function spaces $\mathscr M'(a,b)$ by Zemanian, and these allow us to precisely investigate the relationship between the Mellin and Hilbert transforms. Fourier comes into play in the sense that the Mellin transform is simpy the Fourier transform on the locally compact Abelian multiplicative group of the half-line, and as a more familiar operator it guides our investigation.

A Motivic Pairing and the Mellin Transform in Function Fields

Abstract:We define two pairings relating the A-motive with the dual A-motive of an abelian Anderson A-module. We show that specializations of these pairings give the exponential and logarithm functions of this Anderson A-module, and we use these specializations to give precise formulas for the coefficients of the exponential and logarithm functions. We then use this pairing to express the exponential and logarithm functions as evaluations of certain infinite products. As an application of these ideas, we prove an analogue of the Mellin tranform formula for the Riemann zeta function in the case of Carlitz zeta values. We also give an example showing how our results apply to Carlitz multiple zeta values.

Abstract:We discuss several aspects of Mellin transform, including distributional Mellin transform and inversion of multiple Mellin-Barnes integrals in $\mathbb{C}^n$ and its connection to residue expansion or evaluation of Laplace integrals. These mathematical concepts are demonstrated on several option-pricing models. This includes European option models such as Black-Scholes or fractional-diffusion models, as well as evaluation of quantities related to the optimal exercise price of American options.

Abstract:We present explicit representations in terms of hypergeometric functions for the scaling functions in the $C^0$ orthogonal multiresolution analyses associated with piecewise continuous polynomials. Closed formulas for the Mellin transform of these functions as well as their Fourier transforms are derived. Some new multiresolution analyses whose scaling functions have coefficients that are rational numbers are introduced and discussed.

Abstract:Let $X_1(s)$ and $X_2(s)$ denote the Mellin transforms of $\chi_{1}(x)$ and $\chi_{2}(x)$, respectively. Ramanujan investigated the functions $\chi_1(x)$ and $\chi_2(x)$ that satisfy the functional equation \begin{equation*} X_{1}(s)X_2(1-s) = \lambda^2, \end{equation*} where $\lambda$ is a constant independent of $s$. Ramanujan concluded that elementary functions such as sine, cosine, and exponential functions, along with their reasonable combinations, are suitable candidates that satisfy this functional equation. Building upon this work, we explore the functions $\chi_1(x)$ and $\chi_2(x)$ whose Mellin transforms satisfy the more general functional equation \begin{equation*} \frac{X_1(s)}{X_2(k-s)} = \sigma^2, \end{equation*} where $k$ is an integer and $\sigma$ is a constant independent of $s$. As a consequence, we show that the Mellin transform of the Fourier series associated with certain Dirichlet L-functions and modular forms satisfy the same functional equation.
