Abstract:Mathew writes about the potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) in triage in primary care.1 Effective triaging is a complex task requiring clinical experience to ensure patients are signposted to the appropriate team. It is not surprising that experienced GPs are best suited to triage in the primary care setting. Any AI algorithm would require extensive training and testing before it could be deemed safe enough to be deployed in day-to-day clinical workflow.I see other emerging roles for AI in primary care. Primary care records that are already in an electronic format can be overwhelming to a GP not familiar with a patient. There is a role for machine learning and natural language processing in generating concise and insightful analytic medical summaries that adapt to the symptom the patient presents with.
