Abstract:In this paper, we prove results on the relationship between the complexity of the group and color isomorphism problems. The difficulty of color isomorphism problems is known to be closely linked to the the composition factors of the permutation group involved. Previous works are primarily concerned with applying color isomorphism to bou nded degree graph isomorphism, and have therefore focused on the alternating composit ion factors, since those are the bottleneck in the case of graph isomorphism. We consider the color isomorphism problem with composition factors restricted to those other than the alternating group, show that group isomorphism reduces in n^(O(log log n)) time to this problem, and, conversely, that a special case of this color isomorphism problem reduces to a slight generalization of group isomorphism. We then sharpen our results by identifying the projective special linear group as the main obstacle to faster algorithms for group isomorphism and prove that the aforementioned reduc tion from group isomorphism to color isomorphism in fact produces only cyclic and projective special linear factors. Our results demonstrate that, just as the alternatin g group was a barrier to faster algorithms for graph isomorphism for three decades, the projective special linear group is an obstacle to faster algorithms for group isomorphism.
On the parallel complexity of Group Isomorphism via Weisfeiler-Leman

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the constant-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm for groups (Brachter & Schweitzer, LICS 2020) can be fruitfully used to improve parallel complexity upper bounds on isomorphism testing for several families of groups. In particular, we show: - Groups with an Abelian normal Hall subgroup whose complement is $O(1)$-generated are identified by constant-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman using only a constant number of rounds. This places isomorphism testing for this family of groups into $\textsf{L}$; the previous upper bound for isomorphism testing was $\textsf{P}$ (Qiao, Sarma, & Tang, STACS 2011). - We use the individualize-and-refine paradigm to obtain a $\textsf{quasiSAC}^{1}$ isomorphism test for groups without Abelian normal subgroups, previously only known to be in $\textsf{P}$ (Babai, Codenotti, & Qiao, ICALP 2012). - We extend a result of Brachter & Schweitzer (arXiv, 2021) on direct products of groups to the parallel setting. Namely, we also show that Weisfeiler-Leman can identify direct products in parallel, provided it can identify each of the indecomposable direct factors in parallel. They previously showed the analogous result for $\textsf{P}$. We finally consider the count-free Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm, where we show that count-free WL is unable to even distinguish Abelian groups in polynomial-time. Nonetheless, we use count-free WL in tandem with bounded non-determinism and limited counting to obtain a new upper bound of $\beta_{1}\textsf{MAC}^{0}(\textsf{FOLL})$ for isomorphism testing of Abelian groups. This improves upon the previous $\textsf{TC}^{0}(\textsf{FOLL})$ upper bound due to Chattopadhyay, Torán, & Wagner (ACM Trans. Comput. Theory, 2013).

Abstract:The isomorphism problem for infinite finitely presented groups is probably the hardest among standard algorithmic problems in group theory. Classes of groups where it has been completely solved are nilpotent groups, hyperbolic groups, and limit groups. In this short paper, we address the problem of isomorphism to particular groups, including free groups. We also address the algorithmic problem of embedding a finitely presented group in a given limit group.

Abstract:The group isomorphism problem determines whether two groups, given by their Cayley tables, are isomorphic. For groups with order $n$, an algorithm with $n^{(\log n + O(1))}$ running time, attributed to Tarjan, was proposed in the 1970s [Mil78]. Despite the extensive study over the past decades, the current best group isomorphism algorithm has an $n^{(1 / 4 + o(1))\log n}$ running time [Ros13]. The isomorphism testing for $p$-groups of (nilpotent) class 2 and exponent $p$ has been identified as a major barrier to obtaining an $n^{o(\log n)}$ time algorithm for the group isomorphism problem. Although the $p$-groups of class 2 and exponent $p$ have much simpler algebraic structures than general groups, the best-known isomorphism testing algorithm for this group class also has an $n^{O(\log n)}$ running time. In this paper, we present an isomorphism testing algorithm for $p$-groups of class 2 and exponent $p$ with running time $n^{O((\log n)^{5/6})}$ for any prime $p > 2$. Our result is based on a novel reduction to the skew-symmetric matrix tuple isometry problem [IQ19]. To obtain the reduction, we develop several tools for matrix space analysis, including a matrix space individualization-refinement method and a characterization of the low rank matrix spaces.

Abstract:Group formation is a complex task requiring computational support to succeed. In the literature, there has been considerable effort in the development of algorithms for composing groups as well as their evaluation. The most widely used approach is the Genetic Algorithm, as, it can handle numerous variables, generating optimal solutions according to the problem requirements. In this study, a novel genetic algorithm was developed for forming groups using innovative genetic operators, such as a modification of 1-point and 2-point crossover, the gene and the group crossover, to improve its performance and accuracy. Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be characterized as domain-independent, as it allows any input regardless of the domain problem; i.e., whether the groups concern objects, items or people, or whether the field of application is industry, education, healthcare, etc. The grouping genetic algorithm has been evaluated using a dataset from the literature in terms of its settings, showing that the tournament selection is better to be chosen when a quick solution is required, while the introduced gene and group crossover operators are superior to the classic ones. Furthermore, the combination of up to three crossover operators is ideal solution concerning algorithm's accuracy and execution time. The effectiveness of the algorithm was tested in two grouping cases based on its acceptability. Both the students participated in forming collaborative groups and the professors participated in evaluating the groups of courses created were highly satisfied with the results. The contribution of this research is that it can help the stakeholders achieve an effective grouping using the presented genetic algorithm. In essence, they have the flexibility to execute the genetic algorithm in different contexts as many times as they want until to succeed the preferred output by choosing the number of operators for either greater accuracy or reduced execution time.
Improved Algorithms for Alternating Matrix Space Isometry: from Theory to Practice

Abstract:Motivated by testing isomorphism of p-groups, we study the alternating matrix space isometry problem (AltMatSpIso), which asks to decide whether two m-dimensional subspaces of n×n alternating (skew-symmetric if the field is not of characteristic 2) matrices are the same up to a change of basis. Over a finite field 𝔽_p with some prime p≠2, solving AltMatSpIso in time p^O(n+m) is equivalent to testing isomorphism of p-groups of class 2 and exponent p in time polynomial in the group order. The latter problem has long been considered a bottleneck case for the group isomorphism problem. Recently, Li and Qiao presented an average-case algorithm for AltMatSpIso in time p^O(n) when n and m are linearly related (FOCS '17). In this paper, we present an average-case algorithm for AltMatSpIso in time p^O(n+m). Besides removing the restriction on the relation between n and m, our algorithm is considerably simpler, and the average-case analysis is stronger. We then implement our algorithm, with suitable modifications, in Magma. Our experiments indicate that it improves significantly over default (brute-force) algorithms for this problem.
Bidirectional Collision Detection and Faster Deterministic Isomorphism Testing

Abstract:In this work, we introduce bidirectional collision detection --- a new algorithmic tool that applies to the collision problems that arise in many isomorphism problems. For the group isomorphism problem, we show that bidirectional collision detection yields a deterministic n^((1 / 2) log n + O(1)) time algorithm whereas previously the n^(log n + O(1)) generator-enumeration algorithm was the best result for several decades. For the hard special case of solvable groups, we combine bidirectional collision detection with methods from the author's previous work to obtain a deterministic square-root speedup over the best previous algorithm. We also show a deterministic square-root speedup over the best previous algorithm for testing isomorphism of rings. We can even apply bidirectional collision detection to the graph isomorphism problem to obtain a deterministic T^(1 / sqrt(2)) speedup over the best previous deterministic algorithm. Although the space requirements for our algorithms are greater than those for previous deterministic isomorphism tests, we show time-space tradeoffs that interpolate between the resource requirements of our algorithms and previous work.
Pseudo-random walk on ideals: Practical speed-up in relation collection for class group computation

Abstract:We introduce a technique to obtain practical speed up for relation collection in class group computations. The idea is to perform a pseudo-random walk over the ideals. The ideals visited by the walk are used in the manner exactly as in the previous algorithm due to Gélin (2018). Under the heuristic assumption that the ideals visited by the walk behave as the ideals randomly generated in Gélin's algorithm, the asymptotic complexity of the new algorithm remains the same as that of Gélin's algorithm. The main advantage of the new method over Gélin's method is that the pseudo-random walk requires a single ideal multiplication to generate the next ideal in the walk, whereas Gélin's algorithm requires a number of ideal multiplications to generate each ideal to be tested. We made Magma implementations of both the new algorithm and Gélin's algorithm. Timing results confirm that there is indeed a substantial practical speed-up in relation collection by the new algorithm over Gélin's algorithm.

Count-Free Weisfeiler--Leman and Group Isomorphism

Abstract:We investigate the power of counting in Group Isomorphism. We first leverage the count-free variant of the Weisfeiler--Leman Version I algorithm for groups (Brachter & Schweitzer, LICS 2020) in tandem with limited non-determinism and limited counting to improve the parallel complexity of isomorphism testing for several families of groups. These families include: - Direct products of non-Abelian simple groups. - Coprime extensions, where the normal Hall subgroup is Abelian and the complement is an $O(1)$-generated solvable group with solvability class $\text{poly} \log \log n$. This notably includes instances where the complement is an $O(1)$-generated nilpotent group. This problem was previously known to be in $\textsf{P}$ (Qiao, Sarma, & Tang, STACS 2011), and the complexity was recently improved to $\textsf{L}$ (Grochow & Levet, FCT 2023). - Graphical groups of class $2$ and exponent $p > 2$ (Mekler, J. Symb. Log., 1981) arising from the CFI and twisted CFI graphs (Cai, Fürer, & Immerman, Combinatorica 1992) respectively. In particular, our work improves upon previous results of Brachter & Schweitzer (LICS 2020). We finally show that the $q$-ary count-free pebble game is unable to distinguish even Abelian groups. This extends the result of Grochow & Levet (ibid), who established the result in the case of $q = 1$. The general theme is that some counting appears necessary to place Group Isomorphism into $\textsf{P}$.

Finite matrix multiplication algorithms from infinite groups

Abstract:The Cohn-Umans (FOCS '03) group-theoretic framework for matrix multiplication produces fast matrix multiplication algorithms from three subsets of a finite group $G$ satisfying a simple combinatorial condition (the Triple Product Property). The complexity of such an algorithm then depends on the representation theory of $G$. In this paper we extend the group-theoretic framework to the setting of infinite groups. In particular, this allows us to obtain constructions in Lie groups, with favorable parameters, that are provably impossible in finite groups of Lie type (Blasiak, Cohn, Grochow, Pratt, and Umans, ITCS '23). Previously the Lie group setting was investigated purely as an analogue of the finite group case; a key contribution in this paper is a fully developed framework for obtaining bona fide matrix multiplication algorithms directly from Lie group constructions.

Abstract:Motivated by a theorem of Groves and Wilton, we propose the study of the lattice of numberings of isomorphism classes of marked groups as a rigorous and comprehensive framework to study global decision problems for finitely generated groups. We establish the Rice and Rice-Shapiro Theorems for recursive presentations, and establish similar results for co-recursive presentations. We give an algorithmic characterization of finitely presentable groups in terms of semi-decidability of two decision problems: the word problem and the marked quotient problem, which we introduce. We explain how this result can be used to define algorithmic generalizations of finite presentations. Finally, we discuss how the Adian-Rabin Theorem provides incomplete answers in several respects.

The Isomorphism Problem of Power Graphs and a Question of Cameron

Abstract:The isomorphism problem for graphs (GI) and the isomorphism problem for groups (GrISO) have been studied extensively by researchers. The current best algorithms for both these problems run in quasipolynomial time. In this paper, we study the isomorphism problem of graphs that are defined in terms of groups, namely power graphs, directed power graphs, and enhanced power graphs. It is not enough to check the isomorphism of the underlying groups to solve the isomorphism problem of such graphs as the power graphs (or the directed power graphs or the enhanced power graphs) of two nonisomorphic groups can be isomorphic. Nevertheless, it is interesting to ask if the underlying group structure can be exploited to design better isomorphism algorithms for these graphs. We design polynomial time algorithms for the isomorphism problems for the power graphs, the directed power graphs and the enhanced power graphs arising from finite nilpotent groups. In contrast, no polynomial time algorithm is known for the group isomorphism problem, even for nilpotent groups of class 2. We note that our algorithm does not require the underlying groups of the input graphs to be given. The isomorphism problems of power graphs and enhanced power graphs are solved by first computing the directed power graphs from the input graphs. The problem of efficiently computing the directed power graph from the power graph or the enhanced power graph is due to Cameron [IJGT'22]. Therefore, we give a solution to Cameron's question.

A fast algorithm for Stallings foldings over virtually free groups

Abstract:We give a simple algorithm to solve the subgroup membership problem for virtually free groups. For a fixed virtually free group with a fixed generating set $X$, the subgroup membership problem is uniformly solvable in time $O(n\log^*(n))$ where $n$ is the sum of the word lengths of the inputs with respect to $X$. For practical purposes, this can be considered to be linear time. The algorithm itself is simple and concrete examples are given to show how it can be used for computations in $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$ and $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb Z)$. We also give an algorithm to decide whether a finitely generated subgroup is isomorphic to a free group.

Hardness Amplification via Group Theory

Abstract:We employ techniques from group theory to show that, in many cases, counting problems on graphs are almost as hard to solve in a small number of instances as they are in all instances. Specifically, we show the following results. 1. Goldreich (2020) asks if, for every constant $\delta < 1 / 2$, there is an $\tilde{O} \left( n^2 \right)$-time randomized reduction from computing the number of $k$-cliques modulo $2$ with a success probability of greater than $2 / 3$ to computing the number of $k$-cliques modulo $2$ with an error probability of at most $\delta$. In this work, we show that for almost all choices of the $\delta 2^{n \choose 2}$ corrupt answers within the average-case solver, we have a reduction taking $\tilde{O} \left( n^2 \right)$-time and tolerating an error probability of $\delta$ in the average-case solver for any constant $\delta < 1 / 2$. By "almost all", we mean that if we choose, with equal probability, any subset $S \subset \{0,1\}^{n \choose 2}$ with $|S| = \delta2^{n \choose 2}$, then with a probability of $1-2^{-\Omega \left( n^2 \right)}$, we can use an average-case solver corrupt on $S$ to obtain a probabilistic algorithm. 2. Inspired by the work of Goldreich and Rothblum in FOCS 2018 to take the weighted versions of the graph counting problems, we prove that if the RETH is true, then for a prime $p = \Theta \left( 2^n \right)$, the problem of counting the number of unique Hamiltonian cycles modulo $p$ on $n$-vertex directed multigraphs and the problem of counting the number of unique half-cliques modulo $p$ on $n$-vertex undirected multigraphs, both require exponential time to compute correctly on even a $1 / 2^{n/\log n}$-fraction of instances. Meanwhile, simply printing $0$ on all inputs is correct on at least a $\Omega \left( 1 / 2^n \right)$-fraction of instances.

Abstract:Group formation is a critical factor which influences collaborative processes and performances in computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). Automatic grouping has been widely used to generate groups with heterogeneous attributes and to maximize the diversity of students' characteristics within a group. But there are two dominant challenges that automatic grouping methods need to address, namely the barriers of uneven group size problem, and the inaccessibility of student characteristics. This research proposes an optimized, genetic algorithm-based grouping method that includes a conceptual model and an algorithm module to address these challenges. Through a quasi-experiment research, we compare collaborative groups' performance, processes, and perceptions in China's higher education. The results indicate that the experimental groups outperform the traditional grouping methods (i.e., random groups and student-formed groups) in terms of final performances, collaborative processes, and student perceptions. Based on the results, we propose implications for implementation of automatic grouping methods, and the use of collaborative analytics methods in CSCL.
Beating the Generator-Enumeration Bound for $p$-Group Isomorphism

Abstract:We consider the group isomorphism problem: given two finite groups G and H specified by their multiplication tables, decide if G cong H. For several decades, the n^(log_p n + O(1)) generator-enumeration bound (where p is the smallest prime dividing the order of the group) has been the best worst-case result for general groups. In this work, we show the first improvement over the generator-enumeration bound for p-groups, which are believed to be the hard case of the group isomorphism problem. We start by giving a Turing reduction from group isomorphism to n^((1 / 2) log_p n + O(1)) instances of p-group composition-series isomorphism. By showing a Karp reduction from p-group composition-series isomorphism to testing isomorphism of graphs of degree at most p + O(1) and applying algorithms for testing isomorphism of graphs of bounded degree, we obtain an n^(O(p)) time algorithm for p-group composition-series isomorphism. Combining these two results yields an algorithm for p-group isomorphism that takes at most n^((1 / 2) log_p n + O(p)) time. This algorithm is faster than generator-enumeration when p is small and slower when p is large. Choosing the faster algorithm based on p and n yields an upper bound of n^((1 / 2 + o(1)) log n) for p-group isomorphism.

Abstract:We develop practical techniques to compute with arithmetic groups $H\leq \mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{Q})$ for $n>2$. Our approach relies on constructing a principal congruence subgroup in $H$. Problems solved include testing membership in $H$, analyzing the subnormal structure of $H$, and the orbit-stabilizer problem for $H$. Effective computation with subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{Z}_m)$ is vital to this work. All algorithms have been implemented in GAP.

Evolution of Group-Theoretic Cryptology Attacks using Hyper-heuristics

Abstract:In previous work, we developed a single Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) to solve random instances of the Anshel-Anshel-Goldfeld (AAG) key exchange protocol over polycyclic groups. The EA consisted of six simple heuristics which manipulated strings. The present work extends this by exploring the use of hyper-heuristics in group-theoretic cryptology for the first time. Hyper-heuristics are a way to generate new algorithms from existing algorithm components (in this case the simple heuristics), with the EAs being one example of the type of algorithm which can be generated by our hyper-heuristic framework. We take as a starting point the above EA and allow hyper-heuristics to build on it by making small tweaks to it. This adaptation is through a process of taking the EA and injecting chains of heuristics built from the simple heuristics. We demonstrate we can create novel heuristic chains, which when placed in the EA create algorithms which out-perform the existing EA. The new algorithms solve a markedly greater number of random AAG instances than the EA for harder instances. This suggests the approach could be applied to many of the same kinds of problems, providing a framework for the solution of cryptology problems over groups. The contribution of this paper is thus a framework to automatically build algorithms to attack cryptology problems.

Hard isogeny problems over RSA moduli and groups with infeasible inversion

Abstract:We initiate the study of computational problems on elliptic curve isogeny graphs defined over RSA moduli. We conjecture that several variants of the neighbor-search problem over these graphs are hard, and provide a comprehensive list of cryptanalytic attempts on these problems. Moreover, based on the hardness of these problems, we provide a construction of groups with infeasible inversion, where the underlying groups are the ideal class groups of imaginary quadratic orders. Recall that in a group with infeasible inversion, computing the inverse of a group element is required to be hard, while performing the group operation is easy. Motivated by the potential cryptographic application of building a directed transitive signature scheme, the search for a group with infeasible inversion was initiated in the theses of Hohenberger and Molnar (2003). Later it was also shown to provide a broadcast encryption scheme by Irrer et al. (2004). However, to date the only case of a group with infeasible inversion is implied by the much stronger primitive of self-bilinear map constructed by Yamakawa et al. (2014) based on the hardness of factoring and indistinguishability obfuscation (iO). Our construction gives a candidate without using iO.

Abstract:In this article we survey recent progress in the algorithmic theory of matrix semigroups. The main objective in this area of study is to construct algorithms that decide various properties of finitely generated subsemigroups of an infinite group $G$, often represented as a matrix group. Such problems might not be decidable in general. In fact, they gave rise to some of the earliest undecidability results in algorithmic theory. However, the situation changes when the group $G$ satisfies additional constraints. In this survey, we give an overview of the decidability and the complexity of several algorithmic problems in the cases where $G$ is a low-dimensional matrix group, or a group with additional structures such as commutativity, nilpotency and solvability.
