Abstract:We study the excitation conditions of the supported field modes, as well as the spontaneous decay property of a two-level quantum emitter coupled to photonic structures containing topological insulators (TIs) and left-handed materials. Within the proper field quantization scheme, the spontaneous decay rates of dipoles with different polarizations are expressed in forms of the Green's functions. We find that in the proposed structure, the variation in the topological magnetoelectric polarizability (TMP) has a deterministic effect on the excitation of different field modes. As the result, the spontaneous decay property of the quantum emitter can be engineered. For a dipole placed in different spatial regions, the spontaneous decay feature indicates a dominant contribution from the waveguide modes, the surface plasmon modes or the free vacuum modes. Moreover, a special kind of the surface plasmon modes displaying asymmetric density of states at the interfaces, becomes legal in the presence of nontrivial TIs. These phenomena manifest the feasibility in controlling dipole emissions via manipulations of the topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect. Our results have potential applications in quantum technologies relied on the accurate control over light-matter interactions.
Excitation of Plasmon Toroidal Mode at Optical Frequencies by Angle-Resolved Reflection

Abstract:Plasmon toroidal mode is a unique electromagnetic resonance that cannot be expanded by general electronic or magnetic multipoles. Usually, this mode excitation needs complicated nanostructures, which is a challenge for sample fabrications, especially for nanodesigns with optical resonant frequencies. In this work, we designed a circular V-groove array and studied its toroidal-mode excitation by angle-resolved reflection experimentally and numerically. Our results show that a plasmon toroidal mode around wavelength 700 nm can be excited in this simple nanostructure for incident angles larger than 20°. Compared to reported papers, our design can realize the optical excitation of plasmon toroidal mode, which is useful in high-sensitivity plasmon sensors.

Abstract:Ferrell and Berreman modes are absorption resonances in thin metal films and polar-dielectric media that arise from radiative bulk plasmon-polariton and phonon-polariton excitations. Compared to surface polaritons, Ferrell and Berreman modes occur due to volume charge oscillations across the medium and provide a unique pathway for light–matter interactions. Though the resonances are studied individually, stringent polarization and material requirements have prevented their observation in one host medium. Here, we show simultaneous excitation of Ferrell and Berreman absorption resonances in refractory epitaxial TiN/Al0.72Sc0.28N plasmonic metal/polar-dielectric hyperbolic metamaterials in the visible and far-infrared spectral ranges. The nanoscale periodicity of the superlattices enables the coupling of bulk plasmons (and longitudinal optical phonons) across different TiN (and Al0.72Sc0.28N) layers and allows polarization matching with free-space light that results in Ferrell (and Berreman) mode excitations. Ferrell and Berreman absorption resonances can be used for strong light confinement in radiative cooling, thermophotovoltaics, and other dual-band applications.

Abstract:Electric and magnetic modes establish the basis of the localized spoof surface plasmons (LSSPs), both of which are transverse electric (TE) modes. In this paper, the concept of transverse magnetic (TM) modes of LSSPs is proposed, and the double-layer planar-circular-grating resonator is demonstrated to support the TM modes in addition to the TE modes. In numerical simulations, the TE and TM modes were excited by a plane wave and an aperture, respectively, and their resonant frequencies and electromagnetic field distributions were demonstrated to be different. The electric field of the TE mode is parallel to the grating, while the magnetic field of the TM mode is parallel to the grating. In experiments, multiple TE and TM LSSPs modes were excited by a magnetic coupler. The magnetic coupler can be rotated to distinguish the TM modes from the TE ones, which provides conclusive evidence of the existence of the TM modes. Compared with the TE LSSPs modes, the TM LSSPs modes have the advantages of high sensitivity to the distance between layers and high quality factors (Q-factors), which hold promise for providing improvements on compact applications of LSSPs. Based on the proposed concept, therefore, the classification standard of the LSSPs is expanded to make it more scientific and comprehensive.

Abstract:Optical transmission properties through hole arrays in metal/dielectric/metal trilayer structures were demonstrated. Besides the surface plasmon induced strong transmission and well-recognized negative refraction band, a higher mode was observed and elaborately investigated. Detailed results showed that this mode belongs to a higher magnetic excitation related to the reciprocal vector G1,1 of the lattice, and a “magnetic plasmon polariton (MPP)” model was proposed to describe such magnetic excitations in periodically modulated structure. By adjusting the structural parameters, the authors can conveniently control the MPPs’ properties, which provide us another way to tailor the light propagation properties in subwavelength structures.

Abstract:The coupling between multiple modes in subwavelength scale has attracted a lot of attention due to the interesting physics favored by the enhancement of light-matter interaction. In this contribution, we propose a planar hybrid plasmonic-photonic crystal structure, which enables the tunable coupling between Tamm plasmon-polariton and Fabry-Perot cavity modes. Then, a strong coupling can be achieved through evoking the Tamm-mode dependence of the top-layer thickness of the hybrid structure, which is indicated by an anticrossing with a spectrum splitting of 9.298 meV. The effect enables the spatial confinement of polaritons and the formation of hybrid one-dimensional plasmon-polariton modes. In order to account for the splitting of the orthogonally polarized resonances, a detailed investigation on the TE-TM splitting is also performed through the angular-dependence analysis. We note that the value of the TE-TM splitting strongly depends on the thicknesses of dielectric layer and the distance between two distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) stacks. We show that the cavity modes are extremely sensitive to the distance between the DBR stacks and propose using this feature for strain sensing. Abstract:We present an analytical and numerical study of electromagnetic modes in micro and nano fibers (MNFs) where the electric and magnetic fields of the modes are not necessarily orthogonal to each other. We first investigate these modes for different fiber structures including photonic crystal fibers. We then discuss two specific applications of these modes: (1) Generation of hypothetical axions that are coupled to the electromagnetic fields through the dot product of electric and magnetic fields of a mode, $\vec{E} \cdot \vec{B}$, and (2) a new type of optical traps (optical tweezers) for chiral atoms with magneto-electric cross coupling, where the confining potential again is proportional to $\vec{E} \cdot \vec{B}$

Abstract:Dispersion relations of surface plasmon polaritons with transverse-magnetic-and transverse-electric-polarized waves coexisting in insulator-metal-anisotropic planar waveguides are analytically derived. Aligned nematic liquid crystal, as an anisotropic medium, is employed to manipulate the mode properties. By varying its optical axis, two kinds of mode transformation are found: one is mode recombination, accompanied by dramatically extended propagation lengths at the cutoff angles, and the other is mode alternation, associated with an obvious shift of the electromagnetic energy flux from one insulator to the other. Abstract:Noble metal nanostructures exhibit multiple plasmon modes with different spatial characteristics and resonance energies. Plasmons confine electromagnetic fields in the vicinity of nanostructures, and the confined field has been utilized for various applications, such as sensing and chemical reactions. The plasmon mode with no net polarization is optically dark, and thus, it is not accessible by plane wave excitation. The dark plasmon mode exhibits a long dephasing time due to suppression of the radiative decay process. As this feature is advantageous for applications, development of a novel excitation scheme for dark modes is indispensable. Optical selection rules of a plasmon mode are determined by the spatial symmetry of the plasmon mode and excitation field. Cylindrical vector beams possess unique spatial polarization characteristics that are different from the linearly and circularly polarized light and are capable of the excitation of the dark plasmon modes. This study examines the nonlinear photoluminescence properties of gold nanoplates excited by radially and azimuthally polarized beams and demonstrates that the spatial characteristics of the excitation images are strongly dependent on the excitation field. Electromagnetic simulations support the findings that selective excitation of the dark plasmon mode is feasible by the cylindrical vector beams.

Abstract:The magnetic plasmon ( MP) modes in periodic chains of metallic trilayer nanostructures (nanosandwich) have been investigated numerically in optical frequency region. By employing the Fourier Transformation ( FT) method, the MP modes excited in these chains can be observed directly. We have also used different exciting sources to excite the MP modes in the chain so that we can get clearer physics picture and richer information of the nanosandwich chain. For their long propagating lengths, the nanosandwich chains can well work as subwavelength waveguides to transport electromagnetic field. And one can easily tune the working frequencies and band width of the MP modes by changing the parameters of these chains. (c) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Thin films of noble metals with thickness smaller than the wavelength of light constitute one of the most investigated structures in plasmonics. The fact that surface plasmon modes can be excited in these films by different ways and the simplicity of fabrication offer ideal conditions for applications in nanophotonics. The generation of optical modes in coupled Fabry-Pérot planar cavities and their migration to hyperbolic metamaterials is investigated. Coupled Fabry-Pérot cavities behave as simple coupled resonators. When the intra-cavity media have different refractive indices in two or more coupled cavities resonance anti-crossings arise. The application of this kind of strong coupling in sensing is foreseen. Beyond the cavity modes excited by propagating waves, also long range plasmonic guided modes can be excited using emitters or evanescent waves. A periodic structure made by multiple plasmonic films and dielectrica supports bulk plasmons, of large propagation constant and increasing field amplitude. The optical response of these structures approaches that of the hyperbolic metamaterial predicted by the effective medium theory. Light can propagate with full transmission in a structure made of a photonic crystal based on quarter wavelength layers and a second photonic crystal with an overlapping forbidden band, but presenting a non-trivial topological phase achieved by band inversion. This is due to excitation of optical Tamm states at the boundary between both crystals. The extension to multiple optical Tamm states using dielectric and plasmonic materials and the symmetries of the edge states is investigated.

Abstract:The excitation of optical magnetic plasmons in chiral metallic nanostructures based on a magnetic dimer is studied theoretically. Hybridization of the magnetic plasmon modes and a type of optical activity is demonstrated at near-infrared frequencies. A linearly polarized electromagnetic wave is shown to change its polarization after passing through an array of magnetic dimers. The polarization of the transmitted wave rotates counterclockwise at incident light frequencies corresponding to the low energy and clockwise at the high energy magnetic plasmon state. A metamaterial made of a large number of coupled magnetic dimers could be utilized as a tunable optically active medium with possible applications in optical elements and devices.
Mode splitting of surface plasmon resonances in super-period metal nanohole gratings

Abstract:We experimentally observed the surface plasmon resonance mode splitting in a super-period metal nanohole grating under the transverse magnetic polarization excitation. The mode splitting was observed in the zeroth order transmission and also in the first order diffracted transmission. However, the mode splitting phenomenon is more evident in the first order transmission than in the zeroth order transmission. It is explained that the mode splitting is due to the coupling between the surface plasmon resonance mode in the subwavelength period metal nanohole arrays and the resonance mode of the metal super-grating.

Abstract:Polarized optical transmission properties through the L-shaped holes array in silver film was investigated at near infrared wavelength. Besides the enhanced transmission due to the combined plasmonic excitations, strong optical rotation was definitely observed at specific polarized incidences. After elaborate analyses, two eigenmodes were clearly characterized as the results of the hybrid localized plasmon resonances. Any polarization states from the incidences will degenerate into these two eigenstates after transmissions, suggesting a practical method to manipulate the polarization of light. Our result demonstrates the giant rotation rate achieved by the nanothin sample, indicating potential applications in the micro-optical devices.
Magnetic Modulation of Topological Polarization Singularities in Momentum Space

Abstract:The polarization singularities in momentum space, rather than in real space, are capturing interest for active singular optics with exotic light scattering and various topological phenomena, which have potential applications in vortex nano-lasers, valley exciton emission, and others. Here, we propose to magnetically control the polarization singularities in momentum space in the photonic crystal slabs with inversion spatial symmetry (P symmetry). A pair of C points (circular polarization points) with the same topological charge is spawned from a V point (polarization vortex center), and they can be dynamically shifted in momentum space with the variation of the magnetic field. Moreover, the coupling between transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes induced by the magnetic field gives rise to a hybrid mode, which can close certain leaky channels to achieve an accidental V point. Such active manipulation of polarization singularities with magnetic field is promised for various applications in light-matter interactions and reveals novel phenomena and physics in singular optics and topological photonics.
Magneto-optical induced supermode switching in quantum fluids of light

Abstract:The insensitivity of photons towards external magnetic fields forms one of the hardest barriers against efficient magneto-optical control, aiming at modulating the polarization state of light. However, there is even scarcer evidence of magneto-optical effects that can spatially modulate light. Here, we demonstrate the latter by exploiting strongly coupled states of semimagnetic matter and light in planar semiconductor microcavities. We nonresonantly excite two spatially adjacent exciton-polariton condensates which, through inherent ballistic near field coupling mechanism, spontaneously synchronise into a dissipative quantum fluidic supermode of definite parity. Applying a magnetic field along the optical axis, we continuously adjust the light-matter composition of the condensate exciton-polaritons, inducing a supermode switch into a higher order mode of opposite parity. Our findings set the ground towards magnetic spatial modulation of nonlinear light.

Abstract:We study the plasmon excitations and the electromagnetic response of the magnetically doped single layer and multilayer of ``helical metals'', which emerge at the surfaces of topological insulators. For the single layer case, we find a ``spin-plasmon'' mode with the rotating spin texture due to the combination of the spin-momentum locking of ``helical metals'' and the Hall response from magnetization. For the multilayers case, we investigate the electromagnetic response due to the plasmon excitations, including the Faraday rotation for the light propagating normal to the helical metal layers and an additional optical mode with the frequency within the conventional plasmon gap for the light propagating along the helical metal layers.

Abstract:The propagation property of microwave through chiral metamaterial based on a magnetic dimer is studied experimentally. Our results show two resonance peaks are obtained in the transmission spectrum, and they origin from the hybridization effect of magnetic resonance modes in this system. An optical activity is also observed in the transmission wave. Various elliptical polarization states appear in the transmission, and the polarization state changes dramatically around the magnetic resonance frequency: the transmitted wave becomes elliptically polarized with the major polarization axis almost perpendicular to that of the liner incident wave, and the ellipse is very compressed though it is not exactly the linear polarization. This coupled magnetic dimer system provides doable method of the designing of the tunable optically active medium and devices.

Abstract:An extension of the Maxwell-Faraday law of electromagnetic induction to optical frequencies requires spatially appropriate materials and optical beams to create resonances and excitations with curl. Here we employ cylindrical vector beams with azimuthal polarization to create electric fields that selectively drive magnetic responses in dielectric core-metal nanoparticle "satellite" nanostructures. These optical frequency magnetic resonances are induced in materials that do not possess spin or orbital angular momentum. Multipole expansion analysis of the scattered fields obtained from electrodynamics simulations show that the excitation with azimuthally polarized beams selectively enhances magnetic vs electric dipole resonances by nearly 100-fold in experiments. Multipolar resonances (e.g., quadrupole and octupole) are enhanced 5-fold by focused azimuthally versus linearly polarized beams. We also selectively excite electric multipolar resonances in the same identical nanostructures with radially polarized light. This work opens new opportunities for spectroscopic investigation and control of "dark modes", Fano resonances, and magnetic modes in nanomaterials and engineered metamaterials.
