Abstract:Abstract In this paper we develop a view about the disorientation attached to the process of falling out of love and explain its prudential and moral value. We start with a brief background on theories of love and situate our argument within the views concerned with the lovers’ identities. Namely, love changes who we are. In the context of our paper, we explain this common tenet in the philosophy of love as a change in the lovers’ self-concepts through a process of mutual shaping. This, however, is potentially dangerous for people involved in what we call ‘subsuming relationships’, who give up too much autonomy in the process of mutual shaping. We then move on to show how, through the relation between love and the self-concept, we can explain why the process of falling out of love with someone is so disorientating: when one is falling out of love, one loses an important point of reference for self-understanding. While this disorientating process is typically taken to be harmful to the person experiencing it, we will explain how it can also have moral and prudential value. By re-evaluating who we were in the relationship and who we are now, we can escape from oppressive practices in subsuming relationships. We finish by arguing that this gives us reason to be wary of seeking to re-orient ourselves -or others- too quickly after falling out of love.

Abstract:WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE SUBJECT?: In the context of health and social care, situations at the limit or beyond the role of the professional, such as falling in love and physical attraction between a client and a nurse, are very common events. In residential contexts, the construction of the professional relationship is made more complex than in other care contexts since sharing daily life, routine, constant contact and isolation contribute to making relationships more intense from an emotional point of view. Moreover, the same elements that promote the therapeutic process (interpersonal closeness, self-disclosure, trust) are also sources of role ambivalence and possible emotional misunderstandings. WHAT DOES THE PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: In contrast to what is usually proposed in the literature for the management of similar situations, such as supervision by experts external to the team, this paper proposes a strategy of supervision between peers (called in literature "intervision") and of taking charge of the situation by the entire team and the group of service users. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR MENTAL HEALTH NURSING?: The story here presented offers a key example that may be of interest not only to residential centres for substance users but also to all residential mental health communities. It shows not only that one can fall in love, but that this event can generate new opportunities for the therapeutic pathway. The risks associated with not addressing these situations are discussed. These include the restriction of the feeling of falling in love within the canons of error; the attribution of what happened to personal characteristics and the assumption of guilt for such occurrences. Abstract: INTRODUCTION: The care pathway within a mental health service can create situations of strong emotional impact, including physical attraction and falling in love. This may evolve in moments of impasse for the staff and sometimes compromise the success of therapeutic treatment. Aim/question: This article offers some evidence about how intervene in a situation such as a client falling in love with a nurse, avoiding transforming it into a problem. The fear of the nurse, maybe already inclined to blame themselves for what has happened, when he/she asks for supervision, is to feel judged also by the supervisor. This story teaches that to refer to figures from outside the team, as would usually be the case with supervision, may be replaced by enhancing the role composition already available in the residential community as a resource. Method: The story was listened and enhanced thankyou to an exchange between M. and the community manager. From the analysis of the narratives co-produced by M., the former substance user, and the community manager, the elements that made it possible to transform a feeling of falling in love into an interaction of extended trust emerged. Results and discussion: The non-judgmental and confidential context, but above all the training in interpersonal exchange, facilitated the client sharing very intimate and private experiences, which are usually hidden or denied. This made it possible to make the community responsible for the individual's experiences and to overcome the role impasse and the related identity dilemma. Implications for practice: Neither nurses nor clients should be held accountable or blamed when these episodes occur. The strongest resource is sharing in the group and putting one's own experiences into play. Following the M. story, a targeted confrontation between team members and clients is an accessible and effective resource to respond to situations of strong emotional impact, falling in love being just one example; however, it can be effectively activated only through a collective taking charge of the individual's difficulties has already been implemented.

Abstract:Good romantic love is what every college student expects, but do they really know love at this stage? In today’s rapid development of the productive forces, science and technology changes with each passing day, the social material wealth increase, especially in this age of college students, their infection by today’s society on one hand, have affected by the consciousness of scholarly campus academic atmosphere. They yearn for a romantic love that is imagined, on the other hand, from the society, the reality of the family and the development of their love on the other hand. Airy, Fromm’s, 20th century western famous sociologist, philosopher and psychoanalyst, through analyzing the western capitalist society’s love with the human situation are studied, and on the basis of inheritance of Marxist ethics love, with the development of Freud’s theory of love, on the basis of social critical theory of Frankfurt thoughts formed a unique love education idea. He believes that love has nothing to do with the maturity of the individual, but to put aside the feelings of mind and body. If you don’t try to develop your own personality and tend to create a tendency to create, then every attempt to love will fail. If you are not able to love others, if you are not brave enough to love others sincerely, then your life will never be satisfied. Fromm further believes that love is an art that requires those who want to master art, master knowledge and work hard. Here, love is not only about the narrow love of men and women, but also through certain skills. Love is the overall expression of individuality and the ability to develop love. It is necessary to strive to develop and perfect one’s personality and move towards a good goal. We focus on college students’ love view and love development theory, further explore the study of contemporary college students’ love, and enter the world of contemporary college students’ love. focusing on college students’ love view and love development theory, further exploring the study of contemporary college students’ love, thus entering the world of contemporary college students’ love. In this paper, the author points out the true meaning of love: love is a positive concern, giving is a positive love, respect is the core of love, and needs to know love in practice.

Abstract:Caruana's project for the 2014 BMW Residency at the Nicephore Niepce Museum in Chalon-sur-Saone, France, searches for the truth behind love at first sight or ‘coup de foudre’ (bolt of lightning in English). Her work explores personal experience alongside investigating the subject through the work of neuroscientists, anthropologists and evolutionary biologists. Using photography as her tool, Caruana unpicks the personal experience of falling in love at first sight during her residency in Chalon. In her search for the truth she turns to science, Mother Nature and other people’s accounts of this romantic phenomenon. Science challenges the romantic, fairytale, happily-ever-after notion of love. Turning to Charles Darwin’s seminal text On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (published in 1859), and research by academic Alfred Kinsey who wrote Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948), and second book about female humans and sexual behaviour five years later, Caruana found the counter argument to her experience; she could not investigate the romance of humans without employing science to explore love at first sight in a critical, objective way.

Abstract:The focus of this article is on the link among theory, process, and outcome in the practice of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples. We describe the EFT model of change and the EFT perspective on adult love as the reflection of underlying attachment processes. We outline the manner in which theory and research inform EFT interventions. This leads into a detailed review of the literature on the processes of change in EFT. We highlight the client responses and therapist operations that have emerged from process research and their relation to treatment outcomes. We discuss the implications of this body of research for clinical practice and training.

Abstract:The hypothesis of the human brain operation in vicinity of a critical point has been a matter of a hot debate in the recent years. The evidence for a possibility of a naturally occurring phase transition across this critical point is missing so far. Here we suggest that love might be an example of a second-order phase transition. We analyze three examples of love at first sight from classical literature, showing that they are compatible with the square root scaling of feelings with time predicted by the hypothesis. Two examples of love from liking also confirm the theory. Finally, we predict a critical value of liking ensuring the stability of relations. All results are also supported by the common knowledge expressed in proverbs.

Abstract:This article introduces a metatheoretical framework—the Relationship Trajectories Framework—that conceptualizes how human mating relationships develop across their complete time span, from the moment two people meet until the relationship ends. The framework depicts relationships as arc-shaped evaluative trajectories that vary on five dimensions: shape (which includes ascent, peak, and descent), fluctuation, threshold, composition, and density. The framework can depict single trajectories in isolation or two partners' trajectories with respect to each other (dyadic trajectories). Two theoretical models demonstrate the generative power of the framework—the relationship coordination and strategic timing (ReCAST) model and the sociosexuality trajectory model—both of which integrate close relationships and evolutionary psychological perspectives on mating. Finally, additional examples illustrate how the framework can generate new research questions about core relationships topics.

Abstract:Love at first sight (LAFS) is a commonly known phenomenon, but has barely been investigated scientifically. Major psychological theories of love predict that LAFS is marked by high passion. However, it could also be a memory confabulation construed by couples to enhance their relationship. We investigated LAFS empirically by assessing feelings of love at the moment participants met potential partners for the first time. Data were collected from an online study, a laboratory study, and three dating events. Experiences of LAFS were marked neither by high passion, nor by intimacy, nor by commitment. Physical attraction was highly predictive of reporting LAFS. We therefore suggest that LAFS is not a distinct form of love, but rather a strong initial attraction that some label as LAFS, either in the moment of first sight or retrospectively.

Abstract:This article presents a method for how to educate the emotion of ‘love’ using classical novels in liberal arts classes at universities. Classical novels were difficult for modern readers to enjoy due to barriers to entry such as archaic words and Chinese characters, stereotypes of “no fun”, and other cultural customs due to differences in the times. In order to overcome this situation, this article proposed to instrumentally deal with classical novels in liberal arts classes at universities. Instrumental handling of classical novels means that they are free to read classical novels and ‘misread’ them to open a place of thought. This also means that classical novels are consumed in terms of fun. If liberal arts classes are aimed at improving critical thinking rather than conveying knowledge, it is also meaningful to use classical novels in this way, and students may have an opportunity to be interested in classical novels. In order to handle classical novels instrumentally, accessibility must be improved through translation and students must be motivated to read. Therefore, this article suggested to students how to read classical novels through the theme of ‘love’ in liberal arts classes. In the class, classical novels were used as a tool to look into the emotion of ‘love’. This is based on what Erich Fromm calls ‘The Art of Loving’. In other words, love is an object to study and learn, and it will be used as a tool to indirectly experience love for students in their 20s through classical novels. The class was divided into three parts: “What is love?” “The event surrounding love,” “Love and deviance,” and with the instructor’s lecture, students formed a group of presentations and personal assignments. This composition can be carried out differently depending on the instructor’s intention.

Abstract:Ages 10–14 mark a period in which children develop a strong sense of whether science is 'for them,' a time that typically coincides with the start of middle school in the United States and their first exposure to more rigorous science classes and testing. Experiences with science in and out of school can shape children's motivation to choose science careers or participate in voluntary science classes later on, for better or worse. We explore the hypothesis that children who engage in more informal educational science experiences at the start of this period are more likely than their peers to obtain and maintain interest, curiosity, and mastery goals in science (together forming a construct called fascination). We measured 983 children's fascination with science at the beginning and middle of sixth grade. We found that the children who participated in informal science during this time were more likely to maintain or have greater fascination than at the start. These findings held while also controlling for many potentially confounding covariates and are robust across subgroups by gender and race/ethnicity. Further, the effects are largest for those children whose family generally supports their learning.

Abstract:Thinking about and exploring love by college students is not a very uncommon scenario in the present times. The trend of relationships being a necessity in colleges is very much prevalent nowadays. Most college students who are susceptible to relationships go through the phenomena of passionate love. This study tries to investigate the relationship between passionate love and Big Five personality traits that may help us to predict how an individual may experience and perceive passionate love. The PLS and TIPI inventory was used to measure the passionate love and personality of college students. The passionate love scale was composed of three components which are cognitive, emotional, and behavioural. The Big Five personality traits are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness to experience. The questionnaire was administered to 120 college students who were selected using the convenience sampling technique. The collected data was analysed using a correlational research technique. The results of this study revealed that various components of passionate love were found to be significantly associated with Big Five personality traits. Individuals who possess high levels of extraversion, agreeableness, and openness to experience displayed comparatively higher levels of the cognitive component of passionate love than the other personality traits. While the emotional component showed a significant negative correlation with emotional stability whereas the behavioural component had a significant positive correlation with agreeableness and conscientiousness. The limitations and suggestions for further research regarding passionate love and limitations were discussed.
Emophilia: An overlooked (but not forgotten) construct in relationships and individual differences

Abstract:Emophilia is a construct that is defined through the tendency to fall in love fast and easily. It is a want process, not a need process. It is associated with a rush of falling in love and rapid romantic attachment. Although it is not a pathology, elevated levels of emophilia can result in risky behaviors such as not screening romantic partners prior to investment, ignoring red flags associated with desirable potential partners, ignoring safe sexual practices because of the repeated presence of romantic love, and even perjuring oneself for an antisocial romantic partner. Many of these findings and links can be found in a forthcoming book, “Emophilia: The Science of Serial Romance” forthcoming from Oxford University Press (Jones, 2024). Although emophilia has received some attention in psychological literature, it is time that the construct gets thrust into the mainstream of psychology, personality, individual differences, and relationship research.

Abstract:Being a resident is hard. Being a resident dealing with a recent breakup is even harder. I wrote this piece after a serendipitous encounter on Valentine's Day with an elderly woman who embraced her messy journey to finding love, no matter her age or circumstance. We learn a lot from our patients: from their bodies, physiologies, and illnesses, we learn to become stronger clinicians; from their stories, traumas, and emotions, we learn to become more full, well-rounded humans. Looking back, I think about how easily I almost missed this heartfelt connection by being absorbed in my usual checklist of tasks for a new hospital admission. My patient's keen insight into her own romantic life taught me a vital skill in both medicine and personal relationships: the importance of being open to the unexpected.<i>Annals</i> "Online First" article.

Abstract:Social Psychological and Personality Science, Ahead of Print. We do not know what happens in initial interactions to spark platonic or romantic relationships. This requires data on relationships from their inception, tracked over time. Building on theory about relationship promotion, we identified three exemplar behaviors to test novel hypotheses about relationship development. When starting college, a greenhouse for relationship initiation, first-year undergraduates (N = 143) reported initial interactions with potential friends and romantic partners, and then 129 of them reported back about those 591 people over the semester. As predicted, reports of each behavior—affectionate touch, shared laughter, and partner's gratitude expression—were associated with immediate interest in affiliating with the new person, beyond their perceived warmth, competence, and attractiveness; theoretically derived social perceptual mechanisms explained these links. Critically, although not all potential connections blossomed into relationships, these behavioral precursors to relationship promotion predicted relationship development via post-interaction interest in affiliating. Findings are contextualized within attraction literature with implications for relationship development.

Abstract:At an institution which serves mostly commuting students who are first generation and often balancing life responsibilities, online learning is enticing and presents challenges. Students can struggle with the required skills of self-regulation, effective time-management, communication, and balancing needs. In the spring of 2022, an innovative teaching practice was added to an online first-year seminar course called Link to Life and Learning. Each week, students completed a low-stakes assignment which addressed a variety of factors related to belonging in college including: a reflection about the purpose of a college education, reading to comprehend, health and wellness, diversity and inclusion, procrastination, healthy relationships, involvement on campus, school-ife balance, and individualized meetings with the instructor. These assignments were created in a personalized manner that fit the needs of the students and the campus, while encouraging students to develop a connection to their purpose, passion, and sense of belonging.

Abstract:At its best, public art can promote moral learning in individuals and societies, and digital technology can help achieve this value. As a first step in creating such systems, this paper presents a probe study exploring the design space of reflective engagement with public art. The probe took the form of a mural journal, which was distributed to participants in Philadelphia. The findings show how public art journaling can be integrated into one's life, both logistically and psychologically, and the value of art journaling for introspection, cultivating attention and having fun. This study surfaces a number of tensions in the design space that designers must navigate, such as the question of reflecting with public art on site (now) versus at home (later). This work provides designers with the grounds for informed inspiration to ideate systems that deepen people's experiences with public art.
