Abstract:Domestic aviation is a swiftly expanding contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Presently, economic volatility and the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis have resulted in the decline of domestic aviation, but domestic aviation is rapidly recovering in many countries. However, from a GHG emissions viewpoint, the domestic aviation sector is largely unenforced even though the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) provision for international aviation is currently in place. Accordingly, the knowledge base on emissions and their drivers from domestic aviation is weak, especially in developing countries, thus hindering an evidence-based policy debate. In this context, we have estimated and analyzed the pre-COVID-19 GHG emissions and their trends from commercial domestic aviation in Thailand; and provided insights on the role of key drivers that influence GHG emissions that are expected to be useful not only for Thailand but also for other developing countries. Emissions are estimated following Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Tier-II. Specifically, activity-based landing/take-off (LTO) cycle and cruise. This is compared to the Tier-I method, and key drivers were analyzed using an index decomposition method. The total annual average GHG emissions for all LTO cycles and cruises of commercial domestic aviation for 2015-2020 was 2254 Th. tonnes of CO2-eq. During the LTO cycle of the aircraft, GHG emissions were at an average of 983 Th. tonnes of CO2-eq. Additionally, during the cruise stage, emissions averaged 1270 Th. tonnes of CO2-eq. The choice of accounting methods (i.e., IPCC Tier II vs. Tier I) seems to have had only nominal implications. Our analysis showed that, in the 2008-2020 period, the aviation activity effect and economic growth were the key decisive factors in this sector's GHG emissions growth. It was followed by the fuel energy intensity levels and the population effect in descending order of impact. These findings have significant ramifications for present and future policies aimed at decreasing GHG emissions, aiding Thailand in achieving its climate targets by 2050, and enhancing energy efficiency as the domestic aviation market adapts.
'Green' on the ground but not in the air: Pro-environmental attitudes are related to household behaviours but not discretionary air travel

Abstract:The rise in greenhouse gas emissions from air travel could be reduced by individuals voluntarily abstaining from, or reducing, flights for leisure and recreational purposes. In theory, we might expect that people with pro-environmental value orientations and concerns about the risks of climate change, and those who engage in more pro-environmental household behaviours, would also be more likely to abstain from such voluntary air travel, or at least to fly less far. Analysis of two large datasets from the United Kingdom, weighted to be representative of the whole population, tested these associations. Using zero-inflated Poisson regression models, we found that, after accounting for potential confounders, there was no association between individuals' environmental attitudes, concern over climate change, or their routine pro-environmental household behaviours, and either their propensity to take non-work related flights, or the distances flown by those who do so. These findings contrasted with those for pro-environmental household behaviours, where associations with environmental attitudes and concern were observed. Our results offer little encouragement for policies aiming to reduce discretionary air travel through pro-environmental advocacy, or through 'spill-over' from interventions to improve environmental impacts of household routines.
Quantifying aviation’s contribution to global warming

Abstract:Abstract Growth in aviation contributes more to global warming than is generally appreciated because of the mix of climate pollutants it generates. Here, we model the CO 2 and non-CO 2 effects like nitrogen oxide emissions and contrail formation to analyse aviation’s total warming footprint. Aviation contributed approximately 4% to observed human-induced global warming to date, despite being responsible for only 2.4% of global annual emissions of CO 2 . Aviation is projected to cause a total of about 0.1 °C of warming by 2050, half of it to date and the other half over the next three decades, should aviation’s pre-COVID growth resume. The industry would then contribute a 6%–17% share to the remaining 0.3 °C–0.8 °C to not exceed 1.5 °C–2 °C of global warming. Under this scenario, the reduction due to COVID-19 to date is small and is projected to only delay aviation’s warming contribution by about five years. But the leveraging impact of growth also represents an opportunity: aviation’s contribution to further warming would be immediately halted by either a sustained annual 2.5% decrease in air traffic under the existing fuel mix, or a transition to a 90% carbon-neutral fuel mix by 2050.

Abstract:In the coming century, the impact of air travel on the environment will become an increasingly powerful influence on aircraft design. Unless the impact per passenger kilometre can be reduced substantially relative to today's levels, environmental factors will increasingly limit the expansion of air travel and the social benefit that it brings. This essay considers the three main impacts, noise, air pollution around airports and influence on climate change. Of the three, impact on climate change is taken to have the greatest long-term importance and is discussed at the greatest length. It is argued that, of the three main contributors to climate change from aircraft – CO 2 emissions, NO X emissions and the creation of persistent contrails – it is the last two which are the most promising targets. Ways of reducing the impacts of these two are discussed and it is noted that, in each case, the best environmental result is likely to entail some increase in CO 2 emissions. It follows that regulatory or economic measures to reduce impact on climate should be framed so as to do just that. Measures framed purely in terms of CO 2 emissions are likely to be counter-productive. Nevertheless, the design of aircraft to reduce fuel burn and hence CO 2 emission remains a key long-term objective; the essay considers the potential offered by new technology and new design concepts in this arena.
THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE IN ATMOSPHERIC CO2 EMISSION, AN AIR TRANSPORTATION CASE STUDY

Abstract:Introduction The largest growth in GHG emissions has come from energy supply, transport and industry, while residential and commercial buildings, forestry (including deforestation) and agriculture sectors have been growing at a lower rate (IPCC,2007). Aviation’s contribution to climate change is now a topic of considerable interest. Aviation is a comparatively small contributor – a few per cent – to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, but its growth is rapid (Broker, 2008). Emissions of carbon dioxide by aircraft is about 2% of total anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions in 1992 or about 13% of carbon dioxide emissions from all transportation sources (IPCC, 2007). Therefore, it seems that fuel management in aviation has important role to CO2 emission. This paper focuses on the estimation of consumed amounts of fuel and CO2 emitted to the atmosphere in a case with incorrect fuel management.

Abstract:Global aviation emissions have been growing despite international efforts to limit climate change. Quantifying the status quo of domestic and international aviation emissions is necessary for establishing an understanding of current emissions and their mitigation. Yet, a majority of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)-ratifying parties have infrequently disclosed aviation emissions within the international framework, if at all. Here, we present a set of national aviation emission and fuel burn inventories for these 197 individual parties, as calculated by the high-resolution AviTeam model. In addition to CO2 emissions, the AviTeam model calculates pollutant emissions, including NOx, SOx, unburnt hydrocarbons, black carbon, and organic carbon. Emission inventories are created in aggregated and gridded format and rely on Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS–B) combined with schedule data. The cumulative global fuel burn is estimated at 291 Tg for the year 2019. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 920 Tg, with 306 Tg originating from domestic aviation. We present emissions from 151 countries that have yet to report their emissions for 2019, which sum to 417 TgCO2. The improved availability of national emissions data facilitated by this inventory could support mitigation efforts in developed and developing countries and shows that such tools could bolster sector reporting to the UNFCCC.

Abstract:Purpose Climate change significantly impacts global temperatures, posing challenges to various sectors, including aviation. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of climate change on aircraft engine performance during different flight phases (take-off and cruise) and the environmental consequences. Design/methodology/approach This study examines the effects of rising temperatures on aircraft engine performance using real-time data from a Boeing 787-8 equipped with GEnx-1B engines, which are collected via Flight Data Recorder of the engines and were analyzed for the take-off and cruise phases on the ground. Exhaust gas temperature (EGT), fuel flow and take-off weights were evaluated. Findings The analysis revealed a significant increase in EGT at the cruising altitude of 38,000 ft during the summer months compared to expected standard atmospheric values. This increase, averaging over 200 °C, is attributed to global warming. Such elevated temperatures are likely to accelerate the degradation of turbine components, resulting in increased fuel consumption: higher EGT signifies inefficient engine operation, resulting in more fuel burned per unit thrust; early engine aging: elevated temperatures accelerate wear and tear on turbine components, potentially reducing engine lifespan and increasing maintenance costs and enhanced atmospheric pollution: incomplete combustion at high EGTs generates additional emissions, contributing to local air quality concerns. Practical implications The research findings have practical implications for understanding the potential operational challenges and environmental impacts of climate change on aircraft engine performance. This lets us explore mitigation strategies and adapt operational procedures to ensure sustainable regional aviation practices. Originality/value This research enhances environmental consequences by assessing the impact of climate change on aircraft performance.

Developing a High-Resolution Emission Inventory of China's Aviation Sector Using Real-World Flight Trajectory Data

Abstract:Economic growth and globalization have led to a surge in civil aviation transportation demand. Among the major economies in the world, China has experienced a 12-fold increase in terms of total passenger aviation traffic volume since 2000 and is expected to be the largest aviation market soon. To better understand the environmental impacts of China's aviation sector, this study developed a real-world flight trajectory-based emission inventory, which enabled the fine-grained characterization of four-dimensional (time, longitude, latitude, and altitude) emissions of various flight stages. Our results indicated that fuel consumption and CO2 emissions showed two peaks in altitude distribution: below 1,000 m and between 8,000 and 12,000 m. Various pollutants depicted different vertical distributions; for example, nitrogen oxides (NOX) had a higher fraction during the high-altitude cruise stage due to the thermal NOX mechanism, while hydrocarbons had a dominant fraction at the low-altitude stages due to the incomplete combustion under low-load conditions. This improved aviation emission inventory approach identified that total emissions of CO2 and air pollutants from short-distance domestic flights would be significantly underestimated by the conventional great-circle-based approach due to underrepresented calculation parameters (particularly, flight distance, duration, and cruise altitude). Therefore, we suggest that more real-world aviation flight information, especially actual trajectory records, should be utilized to improve assessments of the environmental impacts of aviation.

Abstract:Through an aviation emissions estimation tool that is both publicly-accessible and comprehensive, researchers, planners, and community advocates can help shape a more sustainable and equitable U.S. air transportation system. To this end, we develop an open-source, data-driven methodology to calculate the system-wide emissions of the U.S. domestic civil aviation industry. This process utilizes and integrates six different public datasets provided by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA), EUROCONTROL, and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). At the individual flight level, our approach examines the specific aircraft type, equipped engine, and time in stage of flight to produce a more granular estimate than competing approaches. Enabled by our methodology, we then calculate system-wide emissions, considering four different greenhouse gases (CO2, NOx, CO, HC) during the Landing, Take-off (LTO) and Climb, Cruise, and Descent (CCD) flight cycles. Our results elucidate that emissions on a particular route can vary significantly due to aircraft and engine choice, and that emission rates differ significantly from airline to airline. We also find that CO2 alone is not a sufficient proxy for emissions, as NOx, when converted to its CO2-equivalency, exceeds CO2 during both LTO and CCD.
Airlines’ eco-productivity changes and the European Union Emissions Trading System

Abstract:With the rapid traffic growth, carbon dioxide emissions from aviation have become a growing cause of climate change. Currently, the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) remains the largest cap-and-trade system tackling aviation emissions. This study examines how the eco-productivity of airlines in the European Economic Area – which are directly affected by the EU ETS – changed during 2012–2019. A non-convex global Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index was developed to provide better estimates of the changes. The study presents three major findings as follows: First, since the inclusion of aviation in the EU ETS, the airlines displayed continuous but slow growth in their eco-productivity. Second, efficiency improvement and technological innovation respectively drove the airlines’ eco-productivity growth. Third, the carbon price on the EU ETS was not a strong indicator of the airlines’ eco-productivity changes.

Abstract:The idea that inequality and inequities drive climate change forms a strong discourse in environmental politics. Reducing inequality is promoted as a win–win solution for reducing greenhouse gases. Others view egalitarian processes as a potential threat since increasing the consumption possibilities of the bottom-rungs of society relative to the top would drive up higher overall emissions. Using the latest available data on greenhouse gas emissions and the adoption of green energy technology measured over three decades, this study finds that a variety of measurements of vertical and horizontal inequality and inequitable access to political resources correlate with lower emissions per capita and greater adoption of green energy technologies. Inequality works in the opposite way than often thought. Per capita income levels, contrarily, are robustly and consistently associated with higher emissions, results that support the view that it is overall wealth (consumption) that drives climate change, not its distribution. Reducing inequality and poverty poses a moral and practical conundrum because levelling up incomes within and between countries, given current levels of technology, will worsen the climate crisis. The basic results hold up to a barrage of robustness tests, such as alternative estimating methods, models, and data, and to formal tests of omitted variables bias. Understanding how emissions might be reduced while addressing questions of equity demands calls for much harder thinking, and potentially fewer slogans, such as "eco-social contracts" and "new green deals" that peddle win–win solutions to a 'wicked problem.'

Abstract:Civil aviation is fast-growing (about +5% every year), mainly driven by the developing economies and globalisation. Its impact on the environment is heavily debated, particularly in relation to climate forcing attributed to emissions at cruising altitudes and the noise and the deterioration of air quality at ground-level due to airport operations. This latter environmental issue is of particular interest to the scientific community and policymakers, especially in relation to the breach of limit and target values for many air pollutants, mainly nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, near the busiest airports and the resulting consequences for public health. Despite the increased attention given to aircraft emissions at ground-level and air pollution in the vicinity of airports, many research gaps remain. Sources relevant to air quality include not only engine exhaust and non-exhaust emissions from aircraft, but also emissions from the units providing power to the aircraft on the ground, the traffic due to the airport ground service, maintenance work, heating facilities, fugitive vapours from refuelling operations, kitchens and restaurants for passengers and operators, intermodal transportation systems, and road traffic for transporting people and goods in and out to the airport. Many of these sources have received inadequate attention, despite their high potential for impact on air quality. This review aims to summarise the state-of-the-art research on aircraft and airport emissions and attempts to synthesise the results of studies that have addressed this issue. It also aims to describe the key characteristics of pollution, the impacts upon global and local air quality and to address the future potential of research by highlighting research needs.
Assessment of Particle Pollution from Jetliners: from Smoke Visibility to Nanoparticle Counting.

Abstract:Aviation is a substantial and a fast growing emissions source. Besides greenhouse gases, aircraft engines emit black carbon (BC), a climate forcer and air pollutant. Aviation BC emissions have been regulated and estimated through exhaust smoke visibility (smoke number). Their impacts are poorly understood because emission inventories lack representative data. Here, we measured BC mass and number-based emissions of the most popular airliner's engines according to a new emission standard. We used a calibrated engine performance model to determine the emissions on the ground, at cruise altitude, and over entire flight missions. Compared to previous estimates, we found up to a factor of 4 less BC mass emitted from the standardized landing and takeoff cycle and up to a factor of 40 less during taxiing. However, the taxi phase accounted for up to 30% of the total BC number emissions. Depending on the fuel composition and flight distance, the mass and number-based emission indices (/kg fuel burned) were 6.2-14.7 mg and 2.8 × 1014 - 8.7 × 1014, respectively. The BC mass emissions per passenger-km were similar to gasoline vehicles, but the number-based emissions were relatively higher, comparable to old diesel vehicles. This study provides representative data for models and will lead to more accurate assessments of environmental impacts of aviation.

Abstract:Amidst robust global economic growth and advancing globalization, the aviation market is poised for significant expansion. Consequently, the environmental impact of aviation emissions is growing in significance. However, due to limitations in real flight data and aviation emissions index models, further clarification of the emission characteristics throughout entire flights is necessary. To better assess the emission characteristics of entire flights, this study employs real Quick Access Recorder (QAR) data and a high-precision aviation emissions index model, yielding four-dimensional emission data (time, longitude, latitude, altitude) from flights. The analysis compares QAR data with emissions from scheduled flight data (SFD) and Broadcast Automatic Correlation Monitoring (ADS-B) projections, explores seasonal variations in aviation emissions, and assesses the impact of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) on emissions reductions. For both number and mass of nvPM emissions, as well as nitrogen oxide emissions, the rankings are: ADS-B-E > SFD-E > QAR-E; for CO, SFD-E > ADS-B-E > QAR-E, particularly during the climb-cruise-descent (CCD) cycle. There are significant differences in the emission of aviation pollutants in airport area and high-altitude area in different seasons. Employing four types of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) significantly reduces both the mass and the number of nvPM emissions. Therefore, it is recommended to utilize more QAR data to refine the assessment of the environmental impact of aviation emissions.

Abstract:The strong growth in air travel raises the question of environmental awareness among air travellers. This article focuses on the exclusion of serious environmental problems of international air travel from the air travellers’ environmental consciousness. It approaches this question, in particular, by exploring international work‐related air travel in two Danish knowledge organizations. The article identifies that the knowledge workers, in general, consider themselves as environmentally aware. However, there is no connection between their environmental attitude and their actual travel behaviour. The article shows that a number of other rationalities seem to affect the travel behaviour more strongly than environmental attitude. Subsequently by reviewing other studies, the article describes how the exclusion of air travel from the environmental consciousness is not only the case among knowledge workers but also seems to be a general problem in relation to flying in modern societies. In the discussion and conclusion, the article therefore focuses on the possibility of creating a stronger link between air travel behaviour and environmental attitude.

Abstract:The carbon footprint of academia has become a prominent concern and a burgeoning research area, with a notable focus on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from research-related travels. Mitigation strategies often promote alternatives, such as developing virtual communication or adopting sustainable transportation modes for short distances. While more ambitious strategies involving the transformation of research practices are increasingly discussed, these mitigation solutions are rarely subjected to rigorous quantitative assessments or meaningful comparisons. This study analyzes a unique database of about 130 000 travel segments by car, train and plane in 159 research entities across a wide array of disciplines in France. We investigate the patterns and associated carbon footprint of these research travels and explore a diversity of mitigation options. Our analysis shows that air travel overwhelmingly outweighs the carbon footprint of research travel, representing more than 96% of GHG emissions. Intercontinental flights are infrequent (less than 10% of all plane trips) but dominate GHG travel emissions, accounting for over 64% of total emissions. In contrast, domestic and continental flights are the most common but their mitigation potential by modal shift to train is limited (e.g. less than 15% for trips under 1000 km). Similar reductions can be achieved by targeting a small subset of travels, for example by modulating the frequency of conference attendance. The greatest and possibly most robust mitigation potential lies in combining modal shift with moderating air mileage (e.g. reducing travelled distance or number of flights). Strategies focusing on electrification or modal shifts for cars, proposed in official guidelines, are found to have negligible impact. In the absence of low-carbon alternatives for long-haul flights, we contend that only comprehensive strategies and policies which include moderating air travel distance or frequency can achieve a robust significant reduction in the GHG emissions from academic travel.

Abstract:The global climate crisis deepening rapidly and turning into a severe security problem requires a global struggle. In this regard, the United Nations has initiated comprehensive negotiations for a long time, but the process has not achieved the desired level of success. Behind this failure lies neoliberalism and its institutions that dominate the global economic system. The aviation sector with rapid growth potential grows and develops around the aggressive strategies of neoliberalism. The developments in the aviation sector naturally affect the climate negatively at the same rate. In this context, the aviation industry adopting the policy of pretending to be environmentalist has ignored or covered up the environmental impacts to escape the pressure of the climate crisis and continued to grow around the deregulation principle of neoliberalism. This situation, called greenwashing, has been well adopted by the aviation industry. The current study deals with the greenwashing application, a strategical approach that the aviation industry has implemented against other environmental problems, especially the climate crisis. The study has revealed that the innovative projects of the aviation industry, such as electric airplanes, hydrogen-powered airplanes, biofuel studies, high-efficiency, etc., are highly nonfunctional. In conclusion, the study has emphasized that the aviation industry is not as innocent as pretended; their attempts to hide the sector-based pollution effects are unrealistic, and the sector-related climate crisis continues to increase.
