Abstract:Introduction Geropsychiatric patients require fall prevention methods tailored to their psychological and physiological needs. Falls are the highest cause of unintended injury for patients aged 65 years or older. Evidence demonstrates there are 11.7 falls per 1,000 days in geriatric inpatient units, compared to 8.9 in non-psychiatric units. Geropsychiatric patients are at an increased risk due to psychological disorders impairing cognition. Methods A pilot study using a pretest-posttest research design was implemented to explore self-efficacy among licensed and unlicensed staff on a geropsychiatric unit. A convenience sampling method was utilized to recruit participants. The intervention for this study was the T.I.P.S. toolkit. Unit staff were required to complete T.I.P.S. training and then the new process was implemented over a six-week period. Self-efficacy for preventing falls nurse and assistant scales (SEPF-N and SEPF-A) were used to evaluate beliefs in their capability to prevent falls. Institutional review board approval was granted for the study. Results While the sample size was small and did not demonstrate statistical significance, there were clinically significant findings. Results revealed total falls decreased by more than 40% on the unit compared to pre-intervention. Clinical trends revealed that both licensed and unlicensed staff self-efficacy increased as well. Conclusions The Fall T.I.P.S. toolkit was an effective tool in preventing falls and improving self-efficacy among staff on the geropsychiatric inpatient unit. Its effectiveness was demonstrated with the decreased number of falls. Pre- and post-implementation surveys of the SEPF-N and SEPF-A indicated an increase in staff self-efficacy, an important factor in the quality of care provided.
