Abstract:Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a thermoplastic polymer with strong mechanical properties, good chemical stability and excellent biocompatibility. Since PEEK was approved as an implantable biomaterial by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the 1990s, it has a wide range of applications in the field of orthopedic implants, especially for the manufacture of intervertebral fusion devices. However, PEEK can only be used in the low modulus area of human bone due to its relatively low elastic modulus. Therefore, it is necessary to further boost the biomechanical properties of PEEK to expand its application in load-bearing bone sites. Meanwhile, the bioinertia of PEEK is the most impactful drawback encountered by PEEK-based implants in orthopedic applications. In this review, we systematically sum up the blending strategy to modify PEEK-based implants. Several kinds of reinforcing materials for improving the mechanical strength of PEEK are summarized. Furthermore, various bioactive additives used to boost the osteogenic activity and bone integration ability of PEEK-based implants are discussed. Finally, the problems faced by PEEK-based composites and their future development are highlighted.
