Sustainable Cities and Society
Abstract:The Underground environment is an integral subsystem of sustainable cities, providing space, energy and resilience. As urban microclimates deteriorate, there is a significant reduction in the sustainability of modern underground spaces with heavy internal loads and complex functions. Relying on mechanical ventilation and ignoring the "atmosphere-building-soil" coupling leads to energy wastage and health risks in underground environments. This study discusses the sustainable design of multi-energy coupling and hybrid ventilation for underground environments in modern cities. Further, this study explored a novel system combing hybrid ventilation, PVT and GSHP to fully exploit on-site energies from the atmosphere, shallow and deep soil, sun and waste heat. On the one hand, PVT pipes and solar radiation heat solar chimneys to produce stable thermal pressure ventilation. On the other hand, GSHP efficiently exchanges heat in deeper soil to regulate the indoor environment and cool the PVT pipes. TRNSYS coupled with CONTAM implements "electric–heat–airflow" coupling simulations to assess various system performances. This system's performances in different climates are analysed from soil thermal balance, energy efficiency in HAVC, hybrid ventilation and PVT efficiency. This study hopes to offer meaningful results for exploring contemporary paradigms of sustainable underground environments.
