Abstract:Continuous resource supply is one of the key points to improve comprehensive national strength. Resource prediction models supportive of target delineation for successful discovery of mineral deposits are consequently pursued and explored by academic communities. Boosting as a classic ensemble learning technique, which can partly improve classification and/or prediction accuracy, has been greatly developed nowadays. To test the efficiency of boosting algorithms in mineral prospectivity prediction, three boosting methods were compared in this research. The Hongyuntan–Chilongfeng mining district chosen as the study area hosts a number of marine volcanic–sedimentary Fe deposits, skarn Fe deposits, Cu–Ni sulfide deposits, etc. Ore-bearing strata, buffers of faults and igneous intrusions, and geochemical distributions of mineralization related elements were used as predictors in this study. To overcome the weakness of the traditional AdaBoost algorithm, this research proposes an improved AdaBoost algorithm. By optimizing the weighting parameters, the weights put on the “difficult-to-learn” samples can be adjusted. In addition, using the Real AdaBoost algorithm to give real number weights to weak classifiers within the range of [0, 1] makes them work evenly during the classification, which better corresponds to the idea of data integration. The results of the experiments showed that the improved AdaBoost and the Real AdaBoost algorithms enhanced the accuracy of classification significantly and performed much better than the traditional algorithm in recognition and extraction of metallogenic anomalies in this area. It is assumed that the user-friendliness and effectiveness of boosting models make them potential data-driven alternatives for regional-scale mineral prospectivity prediction in other mining districts.
