Abstract:We show that non-damped acoustic plasmons exist in single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and propose that the non-damped acoustic plasmons may mediate electron-electron attraction and result in superconductivity in the SWCNT. The superconducting transition temperature Tc for the SWCNT (3,3) obtained by this mechanism agrees with the recent experimental result (Z. K. Tang et al, Science 292, 2462(2001)). We also show that it is possible to get higher Tc up to 99 K by doping the SWCNT (5,5).

Abstract:Temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) is used to study the electronic properties of single CdS nanowires. At low temperatures, both near-band edge (NBE) photoluminescence (PL) and spatially-localized defect-related PL are observed in many nanowires. The intensity of the defect states is a sensitive tool to judge the character and structural uniformity of nanowires. As the temperature is raised, the defect states rapidly quench at varying rates leaving the NBE PL which dominates up to room temperature. All PL lines from nanowires follow closely the temperature-dependent band edge, similar to that observed in bulk CdS.

Abstract:Electrical generation of heat in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and subsequent thermal transport into the surroundings can critically affect the design, operation, and reliability of electronic and optoelectronic devices based on these materials. Here we investigate such heat generation and transport characteristics in perfectly aligned, horizontal arrays of SWNTs integrated into transistor structures. We present quantitative assessments of local thermometry at individual SWNTs in these arrays, evaluated using scanning Joule expansion microscopy. Measurements at different applied voltages reveal electronic behaviors, including metallic and semiconducting responses, spatial variations in diameter or chirality, and localized defect sites. Analytical models, validated by measurements performed on different device structures at various conditions, enable accurate, quantitative extraction of temperature distributions at the level of individual SWNTs. Using current equipment, the spatial resolution and temperature precision are as good as ∼100 nm and ∼0.7 K, respectively.
Photoluminescence from single walled carbon nanotubes: a comparison between suspended and micelle-encapsulated nanotubes

Abstract:Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are luminescent. Up to now, two preparation methods, both of which isolate individual SWNTs, have enabled the detection of nanotube bandgap photoluminescence (PL): encapsulation of individual SWNTs into surfactant micelles, and direct growth of individual SWNTs suspended in air between pillars. This paper compares the PL obtained from suspended SWNTs to published PL data obtained from encapsulated SWNTs. We find that emission peaks are blue-shifted by 28 meV on average for the suspended nanotubes as compared to the encapsulated nanotubes. Similarly, the resonant absorption peaks are blue-shifted on average by 16 meV. Both shifts depend weakly on the particular chirality and diameter of the SWNT.

Abstract:Aiming to unravel the relationship between chemical configuration and electronic structure of sp3 defects of aryl functionalized (6,5) single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), we performed low temperature single nanotube photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy studies and correlate our observations with quantum chemistry simulations. We observe sharp emission peaks from individual defect sites that are spread over an extremely broad, 1000-1350 nm, spectral range. Our simulations allow us to attribute this spectral diversity to the occurrence of six chemically and energetically distinct defect states resulting from topological variation in the chemical binding configuration of the monovalent aryl groups. Both PL emission efficiency and spectral linewidth of the defect states are strongly influenced by the local dielectric environment. Wrapping the SWCNT with a polyfluorene polymer provides the best isolation from the environment and yields the brightest emission with near-resolution limited spectral linewidth of 270 µeV, as well as spectrally-resolved emission wings associated with localized acoustic-phonons. Pump-dependent studies further revealed that the defect states are capable of emitting single, sharp, isolated PL peaks over three orders of magnitude increase in pump power, a key characteristic of two-level systems and an important prerequisite for single-photon emission with high purity. These findings point to the tremendous potential of sp3 defects in development of room temperature quantum light sources capable of operating at telecommunication wavelengths, since the emission of the defect states can readily be extended to this range via use of larger diameter SWCNTs.

Abstract:We have applied photoluminescence (PL) microscopy with scanning laser excitation wavelength for imaging and characterizing individual, millimeter-long, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) grown by chemical-vapor deposition on structured Si/SiO2 substrates. Trenches etched into the substrates allowed a direct comparison of the PL properties of air-suspended (across the trenches) and on-SiO2 segments of the same semiconducting nanotubes. For the on-SiO2 segments, we found an similar to 10-20-fold decrease in PL intensity and redshifts of the emission and excitation transitions by 7-27 meV and 5-24 meV, respectively, compared to air-suspended regions of the same SWNTs. Furthermore, PL imaging was applied to SWNTs fractured by dragging an atomic force microscope tip across on-SiO2 segments. Strong, localized changes in the emission properties were observed. These included the appearance of PL blinking at the fracture site and evidence for residual axial and to a lesser extent torsional strain extending tens of microns away from the fracture site. We also discuss how PL measurements of torsional strain can be used to determine the handedness of a luminescent nanotube.

Abstract:The optical properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are dominated by the excitonic character of the transitions even at room temperature. The very peculiar properties of these excitons arise from both the one-dimensional (1D) nature of carbon nanotubes and from the electronic properties of graphene from which nanotubes are made. We first propose a brief qualitative review of the structure of the excitonic manifold and emphasize the role of dark states. We describe recent experimental investigations of this excitonic structure by means of temperature dependent PL measurements. We investigate the case of upper sub-bands and show that high-order optical transitions remain excitonic for large diameter nanotubes. A careful investigation of Rayleigh scattering spectra at the single nanotube level reveals clear excitonphonon side-bands and Lorentzian line profiles for all semi-conducting nanotubes. In contrast, metallic nanotubes show an ambivalent behavior which is related to the reduced excitonic binding energy. Schematic of the exciton manifold in single-wall carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:We have observed bright photoluminescence (PL) from single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on self-assembly monolayer (SAM) functionized SiO2/Si substrates. By contrast, no PL was observed from pristine SWNTs grown on substrates (SiO2/Si and Al2O3). This suggests a successful blocking of substrate-induced nonradiative decay of excitons. PL recovery from transferred SWNTs on substrates is attributed to breaking chemical bonding between SWNTs and underlying substrates and blocking electron transfer from SWNTs to defect states in SiO2. By analyzing dependence of PL intensity on thickness of SAMs, key constant P for electron transfer in SWNT/SAM/SiO2 system was obtained (beta = 0.11, 0.14 angstrom-1 for the emission region in 1380-1480 and 1480-1580 nm, respectively).

Abstract:In the past five years photoluminescence (PL) of SWNTs has gone from discoveryto one of the most actively researched areas, with broad impact on the basic scienceof SWNTs, as well as the promise of applications. The simplest free-carrier models ofperfect semiconducting SWNTs in vacuum predict that they have direct bandgapsand therefore should be efficient light absorbers and emitters. Experimentally,isolating SWNTs from environmental interactions proves crucial to observing thisstrong PL. The Coulomb interaction enhanced by one-dimensional confinementrequires that excitonic models be invoked to understand PL features. Preparedproperly, SWNTs are strong PL emitters, with good quantum yield, showingprincipal PL peaks with characteristic lineshapes and (n,m)-dependent emission andabsorption energies, as well as a rich absorption spectrum. PL has emerged as animportant characterization tool for determining (n,m) and (n,m) distributions,albeit with some limitations. Extrinsic factors, such as chemical environment,temperature, electric and magnetic field, or intrinsic factors, such as phonons, aremanifest in SWNT PL. Possible applications in sensing, biological markers, andoptoelectronics are beginning to emerge from current research in SWNT PL.

Abstract:Recent demonstration of room temperature, telecommunication wavelength single photon generation by sp3 defects of single wall carbon nanotubes established these defects as a new class of quantum materials. However, their practical utilization in development of quantum light sources calls for a significant improvement in their imperfect quantum yield (QY∼10-30%). PL intensity fluctuations observed with some defects also need to be eliminated. Aiming toward attaining fundamental understanding necessary for addressing these critical issues, we investigate PL intensity fluctuation and PL decay dynamics of aryl sp3 defects of (6,5), (7,5), and (10,3) single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) at temperatures ranging from 300 to 4 K. By correlating defect-state PL intensity fluctuations with change (or lack of change) in PL decay dynamics, we identified random variations in the trapping efficiency of E11 band-edge excitons (likely resulting from the existence of a fluctuating potential barrier in the vicinity of the defect) as the mechanism mainly responsible for the defect PL intensity fluctuations. Furthermore, by analyzing the temperature dependence of PL intensity and decay dynamics of individual defects based on a kinetic model involving the trapping and detrapping of excitons by optically allowed and forbidden (bright and dark) defect states, we estimate the height of the potential barrier to be in the 3-22 meV range. Our analysis also provides further confirmation of recent DFT simulation results that the emissive sp3 defect state is accompanied by an energetically higher-lying optically forbidden (dark) exciton state.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) samples were rigorously purified by high temperature oxidation, acid treatment, ultrasonication, neutralisation and filtration process. By a very simple wet chemical route, SWCNT bundles were hybridised with freshly prepared ZnS nanocrystals of average size 2.00 nm. Characterisation of the prepared samples was done by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Photoluminescence (PL) study of the SWCNT/ZnS hybrid structure showed two distinct types of emission patterns depending upon the excitation wavelength, one in the ultraviolet region wavelengths and the other, for the higher excitation wavelength range, when the PL spectrum mostly covered the visible region.

Absorption spectroscopy of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Current methods for producing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) lead to heterogeneous samples containing mixtures of metallic and semiconducting species with a variety of lengths and defects. Optical detection at the single nanotube level should thus offer the possibility to examine these heterogeneities provided that both SWNT species are equally well detected. Here, we used photothermal heterodyne detection to record absorption images and spectra of individual SWNTs. Because this photothermal method relies only on light absorption, it readily detects metallic nanotubes as well as the emissive semiconducting species. The first and second optical transitions in individual semicontucting nanotubes have been probed. Comparison between the emission and absorption spectra of the lowest-lying optical transition reveal mainly small Stokes shifts. Side bands in the near-infrared absorption spectra are observed and assigned to exciton-phonon bound states. No such sidebands are detected around the lowest transition of metallic nanotubes.

Abstract:Electroluminescence of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes down to ∼15K is measured. We observe electrically driven light emission from suspended quasimetallic nanotubes in vacuum down to ∼15K and under different gas pressures at room temperature. Light emission is found to originate from hot electrons in the presence of electrically driven nonequilibrium optical phonons. Reduced light emission is observed in exponential manner as electron and optical phonon temperatures in the nanotube are lowered by lower ambient temperature or higher gas pressure. The results reveal over wide ambient conditions, light emission in a suspended tube is from thermally excited electron-hole recombination.
Ultrafast Spectroscopy Of Excitons In Semiconducting Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Ultrafast relaxation dynamics of photoexcitations in semiconducting single walled carbon nanotubes (S-NTs) were investigated using polarized pump-probe photomodulation (with 150 fs time resolution) and cw polarized photoluminescence (PL). Both annealed and unannealed NT films and D2O solutions of isolated NTs were investigated. Various transient photoinduced bleaching (PB) and photoinduced absorption (PA) bands, which show photoinduced dichroism, were observed in the ultrafast photomodulation spectra of all NT forms. Taking into account the PB spectral shift observed for NTs in solution, the PA and PB bands are seen to decay together by following a power law in time of the form (t)(-alpha), with a in the range of 0.7 to 1. The PL emission of S-NTs in D2O solution shows a polarization degree that agrees with that of the transient photoinduced dichroism. We conclude that the primary photoexcitations in S-NTs are excitons that are confined along the NTs. From the average PL polarization degree and the transient polarization memory decay, we estimate the PL lifetime of isolated NTs in solution is of order 500ps. This relatively long PL lifetime is dominated by non-radiative decay processes, which when coupled with the tiny PL emission quantum efficiency indicates a very small radiative recombination rate, in good agreement with recent theories that include electron correlation.
Single-color pyrometry of individual incandescent multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Objects that are small compared to their thermal photon wavelengths violate the assumptions underlying optical pyrometry and can show unusual coherence effects. To investigate this regime we measure the absolute light intensity from individual, incandescent multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The nanotube filaments' physical dimensions and composition are determined using transmission electron microscopy and their emissivities are calculated in terms of bulk conductivities. A single-color pyrometric analysis then returns a temperature value for each wavelength, polarization, and applied bias measured. Compared to the more common multiwavelength analysis, single-color pyrometry supports a more consistent and complete picture of the carbon nanotube lamps, one that describes their emissivity, optical conductivity, and thermal conductivity in the range 1600-2400 K.

Abstract:High bias electrical transport characteristics of freely suspended metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are investigated at 250-400K in vacuum and various gases. Self-heating is exploited to examine the temperature dependence of phonon transport and optical phonon decay in SWNTs. The acoustic phonon thermal conductivity of a SWNT follows ~1/T at high temperatures. Non-equilibrium optical phonon effects in suspended nanotubes decrease as the ambient temperature increases. Gas molecules assist the relaxation of hot optical phonons along the tube length and enable enhanced current flow. In vacuum, high bias breakdown of suspended SWNTs can occur via melting caused by electrically emitted hot optical phonons at a low acoustic phonon temperature.

Abstract:We show that new low-energy photoluminescence (PL) bands can be created in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes by intense pulsed excitation. The new bands are attributed to PL from different nominally dark excitons that are "brightened" due to defect-induced mixing of states with different parity and/or spin. Time-resolved PL studies on single nanotubes reveal a significant reduction of the bright exciton lifetime upon brightening of the dark excitons. The lowest energy dark state has longer lifetimes and is not in thermal equilibrium with the bright state.

Abstract:Raman spectra of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were measured at different temperatures by varying the incident laser power. The elevated temperature of the SWCNTs and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is confirmed to be due to the presence of impurities, defects, and disorder. The temperature coefficient of the frequency of the C–C stretching mode E2g (GM) and that of the radial breathing mode in the SWCNT were determined to be ∼−0.038 and ∼−0.013 cm−1/K, respectively. It is found that the temperature coefficient of the GM in the SWCNT is larger than that of the MWCNT, highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, and the graphite. This is attributed to the structural characteristic of the SWCNT—a single tubular carbon sheet with smaller diameter.
Photoluminescence from Colloidal CdS-CdSe-CdS Quantum Wells

Abstract:We report investigations of CdS-CdSe-CdS (core-well-shell) nanostructures by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy at temperatures between 77 and 300 K. PL intensity measurements show a transition from a pump-rate-limited regime at low excitation intensity to the range determined by a spontaneous emission lifetime at a high excitation limit. PL intensity changes as a function of temperature. Also, the temperature dependences of the PL linewidth and PL peak energy are all determined experimentally. The PL linewidth is narrower for thicker quantum wells and becomes broader when the temperature increases owing to longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon scattering. The LO phonon scattering strength is around 30 meV, which is independent of the well thickness, and is much smaller than the value for bulk CdSe.

Abstract:The photoreflectance spectra of the 0.4-nm diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been measured. The sharp features obtained from the experimental spectra have been identified to be the van Hove singularities associated with tubes of different chiralities, and fitted by the first-order derivatives of both real and imaginary parts of the dielectric functions, such that the band structures of the SWNTs are further clarified.
