Abstract:Advances in technology and engineering, along with European Union renewable energy targets, have stimulated a rapid growth of the wind power sector. Wind farms contribute to carbon emission reductions, but there is a need to ensure that these structures do not adversely impact the populations that interact with them, particularly birds. We developed movement models based on observed avoidance responses of common eider Somateria mollissima to wind farms to predict, and identify potential measures to reduce, impacts. Flight trajectory data that were collected post-construction of the Danish Nysted offshore wind farm were used to parameterize competing models of bird movements around turbines. The model most closely fitting the observed data incorporated individual variation in the minimum distance at which birds responded to the turbines. We show how such models can contribute to the spatial planning of wind farms by assessing their extent, turbine spacing and configurations on the probability of birds passing between the turbines. Avian movement models can make new contributions to environmental assessments of wind farm developments, and provide insights into how to reduce impacts that can be identified at the planning stage.

Abstract:Advancements in wind turbine technology have led to larger, more energy productive turbines. However, the degree to which increases in turbine size may affect wildlife mortality is not yet understood. We developed a Bayesian hierarchical model to investigate the potential influence of three turbine size parameters (ground clearance, rotor diameter, and power rating) on fatality rates and fall distances of three representative species: hoary bat ( Lasiurus cinereus ), horned lark ( Eremophila alpestris ), and red-tailed hawk ( Buteo jamaicensis ). Our model incorporated a paired design to isolate turbine size effects, assuming turbines monitored in the same year and in close proximity were similarly influenced by random effects such as weather and habitat. We used Integrated Population Integral Projection Modeling to analyze four component datasets (searcher efficiency, carcass persistence, fatality rates, and fall distributions) derived from focal and priors datasets. Our model showed generally consistent and well-mixed results despite its size and complexity. Decreasing ground clearance led to increased fatality rates for all three species and was most pronounced for hoary bats; increased rotor diameter led to increased fatality rates for red-tailed hawks and for horned larks to a lesser extent. Increasing power capacity led to increased horned lark fatality rates, with a weaker influence on red-tailed hawks. Turbine size covariates had strong species-specific effects on fall distributions with implications for selecting search plot dimensions and analyzing fatality estimates in future studies. To our knowledge, this is the first investigation of ground-clearance effects on fatality rates and of turbine size parameters on carcass fall distributions.

Abstract:Wind energy development is a key component of climate change mitigation. However, birds collide with wind turbines, and this additional mortality may negatively impact populations. Collision risk could be reduced by informed selection of turbine dimensions, but the effects of turbine dimensions are still unknown for many species.As analyses of mortality data have several limitations, we applied a simulation approach based on flight height distributions of six European raptor species. To obtain accurate flight height data, we used high-frequency GPS tracking (GPS tags deployed on 275 individuals). The effects of ground clearance and rotor diameter of wind turbines on collision risk were studied using the Band collision risk model.Five species had a unimodal flight height distribution, with a mode below 25 m above ground level, while Short-toed Eagle showed a more uniform distribution with a weak mode between 120 and 260 m. The proportion of positions within 32–200 m ranged from 11 % in Marsh Harrier to 54 % in Red Kite.With increasing ground clearance (from 20 to 100 m), collision risk decreased in the species with low mode (−56 to −66 %), but increased in Short-toed Eagle (+38 %). With increasing rotor diameter (from 50 to 160 m) at fixed ground clearance, the collision risk per turbine increased in all species (+151 to +558 %), while the collision risk per MW decreased in the species with low mode (−50 % to −57 %).These results underpin that wind turbine dimensions can have substantial effects on the collision risk of raptors. As the effects varied between species, wind energy planning should consider the composition of the local bird community to optimise wind turbine dimensions. For species with a low mode of flight height, the collision risk for a given total power capacity could be reduced by increasing ground clearance, and using fewer turbines with larger diameter.

Flight characteristics forecast entry by eagles into rotor‐swept zones of wind turbines

Abstract:Operators of wind power facilities can mitigate wildlife mortality by slowing or stopping wind turbines (hereafter "curtail") when birds are at increased risk of collision. Some facility operators curtail when individual birds have flight characteristics (e.g. altitude, distance, or relative bearing of a bird's flight path) that exceed some threshold value, but thresholds currently in use have not been empirically evaluated. Overly restrictive thresholds can cause turbine curtailment for birds that never enter rotor‐swept zones, thereby resulting in excess power loss. We evaluated the probability that birds, specifically eagles, entered the rotor‐swept zone (hereafter "entry probability") in response to their flight characteristics. We used an automated monitoring system to classify individuals as eagles or non‐eagles and record flight paths of purported eagles at a wind facility in Wyoming, USA. We used logistic regression with occupancy dynamics and a distance‐dependent colonization process to model entry probability. This model thus allowed entry probability to decrease with horizontal distance to the nearest turbine. Probability of entry varied with distance to the nearest turbine and approached zero when that distance was > 202 m. Entry probability peaked when eagles flew 89 m above ground, corresponding to hub heights of turbines (80 m), and decreased to near‐zero at altitudes ≥ 200 m. Entry probabilities were greatest when flight paths were near the rotor‐swept zone and when eagles flew slowly toward the nearest turbine. Compass bearing of a flight path was not associated with entry probability. Our model accurately forecasted entry probability in Wyoming (AUC = 0.96) and was transferable to another facility in California, USA (AUC = 0.97); therefore our results may be applicable across a variety of settings. Curtailment criteria can be based on flight path characteristics to forecast entry into rotor‐swept zones. The use of distance and altitude thresholds when making curtailment decisions is justified. However, this analysis suggests alteration of the time to collision threshold, with curtailment initiated at greater distances as the speed of the bird decreases. Our novel modeling method and our results can inform curtailment criteria in any situation where curtailment decisions are made in real‐time.

Minimizing collision risk between migrating raptors and marine wind farms: development of a spatial planning tool

Abstract:An increased focus on renewable energy has led to the planning and construction of marine wind farms in Europe. Since several terrestrial studies indicate that raptors are especially susceptible to wind turbine related mortality, a Spatial Planning Tool is needed so that wind farms can be sited, in an optimal way, to minimize risk of collisions. Here we use measurements of body mass, wingspan and wing area of eight European raptor species, to calculate their Best Glide Ratio (BGR). The BGR was used to construct a linear equation, which, by the use of initial take-off altitude, could be used to calculate a Theoretical Maximum Distance (TMD) from the coast, attained by these soaring-gliding raptor species. If the nearest turbine, of future marine wind farms, is placed farther away from the coast than the estimated TMD, the collision risk between the turbine blades and these gliding raptors will be minimized. The tool was demonstrated in a case study at the Rødsand II wind farm in Denmark. Data on raptor migration altitude were gathered by radar. From the TMD attained by registered soaring-gliding raptors in the area, we concluded that the Rødsand II wind farm is not sited ideally, from an ornithological point of view, as potentially all three registered species are at risk of gliding through the area swept by the turbine rotor blades, and thereby at risk of colliding with the wind turbines.

Abstract:A three-dimensional numerical model of bird impact for windshield structure,including framework of windshield,arc-frame and gasket is established.The criterion of windshield material destroyed is established.Non-linear,finite element program LS-DYNA is used to simulate the dynamic process of bird impacting windshield.The result shows that characteristic parameters of windshield have significant vary as the result of framework and arc-frame.Dichotomy is used to determine bird impact critical velocity of windshield damaging and arc-frame yielding.The solution of the simulation in this paper presents a kind of theoretical basis for the design,development and testing of bird impact for this kind of windshield.

Abstract:Identification of a birdbody constitutive model and its parameters,which is very difficult,is an important factor to affect the numerical simulation result of an aircraft windshield against bird strike.In order to improve the simulation accuracy,an integrated numerical simulation technique which can combine the model identification with the numerical simulation is proposed.It puts emphasis on formulating the optimization method to identify the birdgody constitutive model and its parameters and specifies the analysis procedure with an example.The new technique improves the coupled solving theory for the finite element numerical simulation of bird strike and provide a reference for study on aircraft structures against bird strike.

Abstract:The information system has been designed to ensure the analysis of information on the monitoring results of the wind power plant (WPP) territory using the route census method. The database contains 48 fields, reflecting the monitoring results of birds’ behavior in the territory of WPP and processing the initial data: year, month and day of observation, a number of birds of this species, flight altitude, flight speed, direction of flight, coordinates of the bird registration point on the Google-map, average number of birds flying over the territory of the wind park at a given time, coordinates of the points of intersection of the bird flight path with the perimeter of the wind park or observation site, the length of bird flight path over the observation site, and other parameters. The analysis of distribution of birds in the territory of the “Primorsk-1” WPP according to the types of migration (forage, transit, nesting, and ground), direction of flight and altitude characteristics has been carried out. The total number of registered birds was 8927 specimens of 72 species, of which 802 specimens of 11 species were referred to the transit type, 2511 specimens of 32 species – to the forage type, 5614 specimens of 60 species were on the ground (ground type). Most birds (63%) belong to the ground type. 28% of birds were registered in the forage group, 9.0% of birds were flying in transit. The greatest activity of birds is manifested in the autumn migration season, when the transit group accounts for 77% of all annual transit flights. The proportion of birds of forage and ground types, registered in autumn, is 68% and 74%, respectively, of the total number of birds registered in autumn. In the group of ground birds, the overwhelming majority of specimens belong to the period of autumn migration (4141 birds or 74%). The least number was observed in the winter season (317 birds or 5.6%). The author proposes a mathematical model for analyzing birds’ interaction with turbines using the results of monitoring the territory of wind power plants by means of route census method. The model makes it possible to obtain information on the probability of different species of bird collisions with wind wheels and the number of collisions with turbines, depending on the flight characteristics of birds, parameters of wind parks and observation conditions in different seasons. In the risk zone of birds’ interaction with turbines, only specimens of one species, Buteo buteo, were observed. The calculated probability of one bird collision when passing through the wind wheel is 0.19. The anticipated number of bird collisions with turbines during one year of the “Primorsk-1” wind park functioning is in the range of 5.6÷6.7 specimens.
Wind turbine power and land cover effects on cumulative bat deaths

Abstract:Wind turbines (WT) cause bird and bat mortalities which depend on the WT and landscape features. The effects of WT features and environmental variables at different spatial scales associated to bat deaths in a mountainous and forested area in Thrace, NE Greece were investigated. Initially, we sought to quantify the most lethal WT characteristic between tower height, rotor diameter and power. The scale of interaction distance between bat deaths and the land cover characteristics surrounding the WTs was quantified. A statistical model was trained and validated against bat deaths and WT, land cover and topography features. Variance partitioning between bat deaths and the explanatory covariates was conducted. The trained model was used to predict bat deaths attributed to existing and future wind farm development in the region. Results indicated that the optimal interaction distance between WT and surrounding land cover was 5 km, the larger distance than the ones examined. WT power, natural land cover type and distance from water explained 40 %, 15 % and 11 % respectively of the total variance in bat deaths by WTs. The model predicted that operating but not surveyed WTs comprise of 377.8% and licensed but not operating yet will contribute to 210.2% additional deaths than the ones recorded. Results indicate that among all WT features and land cover characteristics, wind turbine power is the most significant factor associated to bat deaths. Results indicated that WTs located within 5 km buffer comprised of natural land cover types have substantial higher deaths. More WT power will result in more deaths. Wind turbines should not be licensed in areas where natural land cover at a radius of 5km exceeds 50%. These results are discussed in the climate-land use-biodiversity-energy nexus.

Abstract:The combined model of UniGraphics(UG) and ANSYS-LS-DYNA so ftware and finite element (FE) model of aircraft windshield and windshield structure for bird strike were built. The windshield structure is composed of windshield, framework, arc-frame and gasket. The factors influencing on dynamic res ponse for bird strike were analyzed such as bird velocity, mesh density of windshield, mesh density of bird, boundary condition, material model of windshield, analytic methods and components of windshield structure. The results showed that these fact ors must be taken into account when FE analysis method is applied to aircraft anti-bird design.

Abstract:Abstract Wind energy production has expanded as an alternative to carbon emitting fossil fuels, but is causing impacts on wildlife that need to be addressed. Soaring birds show concerning rates of collision with turbine rotor blades and losses of critical habitat. However, how these birds interact with wind turbines is poorly understood. We analyzed high-frequency GPS tracking data of 126 black kites ( Milvus migrans ) moving near wind turbines to identify behavioural mechanisms of turbine avoidance and their interaction with environmental variables. Birds flying within 1000 m from turbines and below the height of rotor blades were less likely to be oriented towards turbines than expected by chance, this pattern being more striking at distances less than 750 m. Within the range of 750 m, birds showed stronger avoidance when pushed by the wind in the direction of the turbines. Birds flying above the turbines did not change flight directions with turbine proximity. Sex and age of birds, uplift conditions and turbine height, showed no effect on flight directions although these factors have been pointed as important drivers of turbine collision by soaring birds. Our findings suggest that migrating black kites recognize the presence of wind turbines and behave in a way to avoid then. This may explain why this species presents lower collision rates with wind turbines than other soaring birds. Future studies should clarify if turbine avoidance behaviour is common to other soaring birds, particularly those that are facing high fatality rates due to collision.

Abstract:With the continual advancement of wind energy projects, concerns regarding biodiversity have escalated. This review delves into the significance of bird-monitoring programs conducted at several wind farms in Denmark, namely Horns Rev 1 and 2, Nysted, Tunø Knob, Anholt, and Klim Fjordholme, since the late 1990s. Previous studies have revealed that despite the presence of important migratory species around these wind farms, their flight patterns indicate an adaptation to the presence of turbines. The East-Atlantic Flyway accentuates the importance of these findings, as it hosts millions of waterbirds annually. It has been observed that habitat alteration, particularly due to the construction of wind turbines, influences the flight behavior of avian species, including those of EU importance. The altered flight behavior induced by wind turbines can have significant implications for bird populations, particularly in terms of fitness and fecundity, especially for sensitive species and large birds of prey. This underscores the necessity for ongoing bird monitoring programs to comprehensively understand the spatial distribution and behavior of avian species, thus informing global strategies to mitigate potential impacts on both commercial interests and environmental conservation efforts.

Abstract:Offshore windfarms are a potential threat to seabirds, partly due to collision risk with turbine blades. Wind influences the mode, height and speed of seabird flight, and therefore the risk of collision with turbines. We investigated how wind influences the flight of black-legged kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla , a gull of conservation concern, in order to incorporate these findings into collision risk estimates and identify mitigation measures. We used GPS telemetry data (23rd June to 10th August 2021) from 20 kittiwakes breeding in Aberdeenshire, UK (57.385°N, 1.868°W) to estimate the effect of wind on behavioural state, proportion of flight at collision risk height, probability of collision when within the rotor-swept zone, and overall collision risk. We found that as windspeed increased, kittiwakes commuted less and rested more. With increasing windspeed, kittiwakes spent a considerably smaller proportion of their flight time in the rotor-swept zone, but had a slightly higher probability of collision while in it. Uncertainty was high for most relationships between windspeed and kittiwake flight metrics. The overall effect of increasing windspeed on collision risk was negative, although we did not model avoidance rate. Effects of windspeed on collision risk were largely mediated through effects on commuting flight, and contingent on wind direction. Collision risk estimates incorporating the effects of windspeed may have greater precision and accuracy, but considerable uncertainty in windspeed-flight parameter relationships remains. Therefore although kittiwake collision risk may be mitigated by raising the 'cut-in' windspeed above which wind turbines generate power, the magnitude of this effect is uncertain.

A Study of Bird Impact on Aircraft Windshield Using SPH and Finite Element Method

Abstract:The clash between flying birds and airplanes frequently results in damage of aircraft structures which could even lead to aircraft crash and death of crew members in the most disastrous cases.Investigation on the windshield resistance to bird impact is therefore crucial to ensure the safe flight of high-speed low-altitude military aircraft.Based on the experimental observation of bird impact on aircraft arc windshields, a computational model of an arc windshield and bird for a certain type of aircraft made in China is established.Issues on the arc windshield impacted by birds are studied using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and the finite element method (FEM) provided by LS-DYNA3D.Results including the deformation, displacement and strain of the arc windshield are obtained through numerical simulation, which agree well with the experimental data.More useful conclusions, such as the impact force history curve and stress history curve under impact velocities in the range of 500-650 km/h, the critical impact velocity which can lead to damage of the windshield, possible damage locations and modes of the windshield after impacted by birds, are drawn from the numerical simulation.Finally, a comparison of the arbitary Lagrange Euler (ALE) and element free Galerkin (EFG) methods with the SPH for bird impacts verifies that the SPH method is feasible and efficient for analyzing bird impact problems.The research results can provide valuable data for the design and manufacture of reliable windshields.
Window area and development drive spatial variation in bird-window collisions in an urban landscape

Abstract:Collisions with windows are an important human-related threat to birds in urban landscapes. However, the proximate drivers of collisions are not well understood, and no study has examined spatial variation in mortality in an urban setting. We hypothesized that the number of fatalities at buildings varies with window area and habitat features that influence avian community structure. In 2010 we documented bird-window collisions (BWCs) and characterized avian community structure at 20 buildings in an urban landscape in northwestern Illinois, USA. For each building and season, we conducted 21 daily surveys for carcasses and nine point count surveys to estimate relative abundance, richness, and diversity. Our sampling design was informed by experimentally estimated carcass persistence times and detection probabilities. We used linear and generalized linear mixed models to evaluate how habitat features influenced community structure and how mortality was affected by window area and factors that correlated with community structure. The most-supported model was consistent for all community indices and included effects of season, development, and distance to vegetated lots. BWCs were related positively to window area and negatively to development. We documented mortalities for 16/72 (22%) species (34 total carcasses) recorded at buildings, and BWCs were greater for juveniles than adults. Based on the most-supported model of BWCs, the median number of annual predicted fatalities at study buildings was 3 (range = 0-52). These results suggest that patchily distributed environmental resources and levels of window area in buildings create spatial variation in BWCs within and among urban areas. Current mortality estimates place little emphasis on spatial variation, which precludes a fundamental understanding of the issue. To focus conservation efforts, we illustrate how knowledge of the structural and environmental factors that influence bird-window collisions can be used to predict fatalities in the broader landscape.
Flight morphology and visual obstruction predict collision risk in birds

Abstract:ABSTRACT Collisions with buildings are a major source of mortality for wild birds, but these instantaneous events are difficult to observe. As a result, the mechanistic causes of collision mortality are poorly understood. Here, we evaluate whether sensory and biomechanical traits can explain why some species are more collision-prone than others. We first examined concordance of species vulnerability estimates across previous North American studies to determine whether these estimates are repeatable, and whether vulnerability is more similar among closely-related species. We found moderate concordance and phylogenetic signal, indicating that some bird species are consistently more collision-prone than others. We next tested whether morphological traits related to flight performance and sensory guidance explain these differences among species. Our comparative analysis shows that two traits primarily predict collision vulnerability within passerines: relative beak length and relative wing length. Small passerine species with relatively short wings and those with relatively long beaks are more collision-prone, suggesting that greater maneuverability and obstructed vision contribute to risk. Together, these findings can help inform mitigation strategies and predict which species will be most at risk in other regions.

Abstract:Efficient wind turbine blade design is crucial, yet current models often fail to fully account for variations in wind inflow due to terrain differences, particularly wind shear. This article aims to verify the theoretical method of designing the geometry of wind turbine blades. The proposed model, which combines the BEM method and the vortex method, was developed to consider the nonuniform inflow caused by wind shear. Model verification employed an explanatory sequential process focusing on two perspectives. First, it examines the correlation between the theoretical terrain roughness coefficient and the blade geometry. Second, it analyzes the relationship between the type of terrain (terrain roughness) and the design of wind turbine blades in two real locations in southeastern Poland. The results highlight the importance of accurate assessment of wind speed and spatial conditions to optimize the use of local wind resources in electricity production. It is suggested that adapting wind turbine blade geometry to the plant's location will improve resource utilization, providing insight for energy decision‐makers. The findings highlight the importance of considering wind shear when designing blades for varying terrain. The methodology is presented on the example of a wind power plant, and at the end of the article, potential directions of future research in this field are outlined.

Optimizing wind power generation while minimizing wildlife impacts in an urban area

Abstract:The location of a wind turbine is critical to its power output, which is strongly affected by the local wind field. Turbine operators typically seek locations with the best wind at the lowest level above ground since turbine height affects installation costs. In many urban applications, such as small-scale turbines owned by local communities or organizations, turbine placement is challenging because of limited available space and because the turbine often must be added without removing existing infrastructure, including buildings and trees. The need to minimize turbine hazard to wildlife compounds the challenge. We used an exclusion zone approach for turbine-placement optimization that incorporates spatially detailed maps of wind distribution and wildlife densities with power output predictions for the Ohio State University campus. We processed public GIS records and airborne lidar point-cloud data to develop a 3D map of all campus buildings and trees. High resolution large-eddy simulations and long-term wind climatology were combined to provide land-surface-affected 3D wind fields and the corresponding wind-power generation potential. This power prediction map was then combined with bird survey data. Our assessment predicts that exclusion of areas where bird numbers are highest will have modest effects on the availability of locations for power generation. The exclusion zone approach allows the incorporation of wildlife hazard in wind turbine siting and power output considerations in complex urban environments even when the quantitative interaction between wildlife behavior and turbine activity is unknown.

Abstract:Abstract We present two new models for wind turbine interaction effects and a recipe for combining them. The first model is an extension of the Park model, which explicitly incorporates turbulence, both the ambient atmospheric turbulence and the turbulence generated in the wake itself. This Turbulence Optimized Park model is better equipped to describe wake recovery over long distances such as between wind farms, where the wake expansion slows down as the turbine-generated turbulence decays. The second model is a first version of a full engineering wind farm blockage model. In the same vein as the wake model it adds blockage contributions from the individual wind turbines to form an aggregated wind farm scale blockage effect that can be incorporated directly into the park power curve and annual energy calculations. The wake model and the blockage model describe downstream and upstream turbine interaction effects, respectively. They are coupled as the outputs of one model are the inputs to the other model and vice versa. We describe how this coupling is achieved through an iterative process. We give early stage examples of the validation of the two models and discuss how they might be further validated and improved in the future.
Flight heights obtained from GPS versus altimeters influence estimates of collision risk with offshore wind turbines in Lesser Black-backed Gulls Larus fuscus

Abstract:The risk posed by offshore wind farms to seabirds through collisions with turbine blades is greatly influenced by species-specific flight behaviour. Bird-borne telemetry devices may provide improved measurement of aspects of bird behaviour, notably individual and behaviour specific flight heights. However, use of data from devices that use the GPS or barometric altimeters in the gathering of flight height data is nevertheless constrained by a current lack of understanding of the error and calibration of these methods. Uncertainty remains regarding the degree to which errors associated with these methods can affect recorded flight heights, which may in turn have a significant influence on estimates of collision risk produced by Collision Risk Models (CRMs), which incorporate flight height distribution as an input. Using GPS/barometric altimeter tagged Lesser Black-backed Gulls Larus fuscus from two breeding colonies in the UK, we examine comparative flight heights produced by these devices, and their associated errors. We present a novel method of calibrating barometric altimeters using behaviour characterised from GPS data and open-source modelled atmospheric pressure. We examine the magnitude of difference between offshore flight heights produced from GPS and altimeters, comparing these measurements across sampling schedules, colonies, and years. We found flight heights produced from altimeter data to be significantly, although not consistently, higher than those produced from GPS data. This relationship was sustained across differing sampling schedules of five minutes and of 10 s, and between study colonies. We found the magnitude of difference between GPS and altimeter derived flight heights to also vary between individuals, potentially related to the robustness of calibration factors used. Collision estimates for theoretical wind farms were consequently significantly higher when using flight height distributions generated from barometric altimeters. Improving confidence in telemetry-obtained flight height distributions, which may then be applied to CRMs, requires sources of errors in these measurements to be identified. Our study improves knowledge of the calibration processes for flight height measurements based on telemetry data, with the aim of increasing confidence in their use in future assessments of collision risk and reducing the uncertainty over predicted mortality associated with wind farms.
