Metabolomics
Abstract:Quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) practices are key tenets that facilitate study and data quality across all applications of untargeted metabolomics. These important practices will strengthen this field and accelerate its success. The Best Practices Working Group (WG) within the Metabolomics Quality Assurance and Quality Control Consortium (mQACC) focuses on community use of QA/QC practices and protocols and aims to identify, catalogue, harmonize, and disseminate current best practices in untargeted metabolomics through community-driven activities.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main goal of this paper is to establish a framework for quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) practices in non-targeted metabolomics research and to develop a set of best practice guidelines. Specifically, the paper aims to address the following key issues: 1. **Background and Need**: The paper points out that in non-targeted metabolomics, QA and QC practices are crucial for ensuring the quality of research and data. Currently, there is a lack of specific guidelines applicable to non-targeted metabolomics, and these guidelines are important for strengthening the field and accelerating its success. 2. **Research Framework**: The paper aims to develop a working strategy or roadmap to guide researchers in their practical activities in non-targeted metabolomics research. This framework promotes the coordination and dissemination of current best QA/QC practice guidelines and encourages the widespread adoption of these essential QA/QC activities in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). 3. **Community Engagement**: By collecting information through conference workshops, virtual and face-to-face interactive forum discussions, and community surveys, the paper emphasizes the importance of community engagement. These activities help identify seven key QC stages to prioritize and gather feedback from participants. 4. **Key QC Stages**: The paper outlines seven major QC stages, each comprising a series of activities. These stages include, but are not limited to, the experimental planning stage, data collection stage, and data analysis and dissemination stage. Through these stages, best practices for QA/QC can be identified. 5. **Final Outcome**: The goal of the paper is to create a "living document" that records the current best QA/QC practices for non-targeted metabolomics. This document will be continuously updated and refined as the field progresses. In summary, the core purpose of this paper is to improve the research quality and reliability in the field of non-targeted metabolomics by developing and promoting best QA/QC practices.
